Howl felt a sick flip-flopping of relief and regret in their stomach because hoo boy that could’ve gone badly. “Yeah, don’t mention it,” they say, voice a little warbly. They watched Josh get mounted and ran as far forward as they could to get out of the line of fire.

No matter how many times they saw it, Howl would never get tired of seeing Sequera fight. She hadn’t singlehandedly gotten them out of the Kanto occupation as a Frogadier on luck. She was a whirling, twisting, flipping dervish, dodging out of the way of the Sylveon’s reaching ribbons with back springs, hand-stands, and tucks, like her body was made out of liquid. Unfortunately, all the evasiveness left little time for her to actually strike.

The Moonblast caught Howl’s attention and they turned to check on Josh-- and good thing they did, because he looked like he wasn’t doing so hot. The heavy, pounding steps of the Drapion echoed the pulse in Howl’s ears. “Sequera, help Josh!” they ordered, and the Greninja jumped over to do so, taking up a defensive position just in front of Josh’s Manectric.

Howl tossed their final Pokeball yelling “Malarkey, Bonemerang!” and their Cubone slid forward with a brutal toss of his bone; it went spinning out, taking out one Drapion at the-- the ankle? Did they even have those-- sending it falling right onto its face with a sound like a ton of bricks; the other tried to climb over its fallen equivalent only to get smacked hard by the Bonemerang’s return in the back of the head, causing it to flinch.

Never one to be left out, Blais crawled closer to the Drapion, before lifting his larval head and releasing a gross sounding, bug buzz burp, making the second Drapion recoil and stumble backwards, holding its pained head.

Howl relaxed a bit at the stranger’s admission of being okay. They turned a slow circle, looking up at the oilslick sheen of the dome around them. “Solid?” they ask, their voice warbling in the static and energy in the air. “That means-- we’re trapped? We can’t get out?”

They tried to hide the pinched tone of panic that was hiking in their voice.

Luckily, their new companion, Josh, offers them a distraction by means of an introduction-- a long one, with, honestly, more info than was needed. It was a brief respite bceause halfway through, the world decided to erupt. Howl buckled, hands over their ears, eyes clenched tight against the brightness. When they peeked out again, they saw a large, pink feline, stalking just a few feet away.

“What the--,”

Sequera struck a tense pose next to them, her eyes focused on the Sylveon pinning Josh. With shaky fingers, Howl slowly reached for their belt, popping Blais’ ball off.

“I go left, you go right?” they whispered to their Greninja; her chin dropped half a centimeter in acknowledgement.

They burst into motion, Sequera backflipping over Howl’s head and firing off a hydro pump downwards into the prowling Sylveon’s face; Howl sidearm pitched Blais’ pokeball at the Sylveon pinning Josh. The Larvesta erupted in a ball of flame, slamming into the large cat with a flame charge and sending it flying off of Josh and skidding in the dirt, a smoldering burn on its chest.

It’s like watching a shadow-- one minute he’s there, the next minute he’s over there, and then he’s over there, like he leaped through space without touching the ground. He pauses, just briefly, to let a screaming child and a parent in hot pursuit crash across his path, before continuing on again. Holy shit, how does he do it?

Howl is not quite so lucky. They get punched by a teenager who dove over a Poptart stand, then stumble backwards and trip over a container of disinfectant wipes that all the wipes have been ripped out of. They land hard on their ass and wince, then push to their feet, gritting their teeth and clenching their basket.

They catch up just in time to hear Tam telling them to address him as just Tam and Howl blinks. “Uh. Yes, si-- I mean, Tam.”

The aisle they’re aiming for is nearly picked clean. Howl looks at the lady with literal towers of cans in her cart, looking like she was setting up the Barad-dûr and Orthanc of nonperishables.

“Excuse me, ma’am,” Howl tries, “do you think we could have just a can or two?”
[break][break]
“No!” she shrieks, jerking her cart away and sending the piles of cans clattering to the ground. It takes all the fight in Howl’s body to not drop to the floor and fight with her over them.

She gathers a handful up in her arms and spits:

“If you weren’t smart enough to plan ahead, then doom on you!”

Howl had been standing at the edge of a bridge spanning a channel of deep, dark water when they caught the reflection of the dome in the lake. Like a soap bubble or an oil spill, it was a refraction of rainbow light; only then, looking up in confusion, did they realize the sound of the ambience around them hand changed, muffled and distorted, like a dream.

Strange lightning, disconnected from clouds or ground, zapped sideways near them, and they stumbled back, not quite panicking, but not quite alright, either. It felt like a trip, like they were young and their mom had been slipping ketamine into their mac and cheese again; their hand shook slightly as they called out Sequera for a confidence boost.

“What the heck is going on?” they asked their-- normally quite on top of things-- Greninja, who took a long look at the distortion around them, and shrugged. “Great, super helpful, thank you.”

A commotion from somewhere above them drew their attention. Without speaking, Howl clambered into Sequera’s back, and she cleared several ridges in a single bound, clasping the mountainside and jumping up again until they found the source of the noise-- another human, and a saddled Manectric.

“Are you okay?” Howl asked, descending from Sequera’s back as she dropped into a crouch. More lightning, and the hair on the back of their neck stood on edge. “Do you know what’s going on here?”

“So, you don’t believe in ghosts, huh?” Howl asked, tone conversational, as they turned to press deeper into the house, taking careful footsteps and judging the strength of the floorboards beneath their feet.

One cracks a bit, and they step to the side with a grimace. “Ugh, houses are the worst. Big buildings, like hospitals and factories, are slightly better. Built to last, you know.” As long as you’re careful on the higher floors.

It’s like walking a fine line between their past and their present, allowing the knowledge from a childhood spent suffering in places like this to leak through while trapping all the bad and trauma erstwhile. It felt good.

Contrary to @bobby’s internal mantra, Howl’s is a song, a dirge of elation. It’s evident in the snap of the gloves over their hands, the whistle on their lips, the swinging of the trash stabby stick as they made their way across the sands.

Sure, it was just after the first weekend of summer and the crowds had made a bigger mess than Howl thought humanly possible, but the sun was shining, the weather was warm, and they weren’t being forced to volunteer on behalf of the organized criminal state.

Howl-- and Bobby-- are amongst a handful of quote-unquote volunteers that set about de-trashifying the beach. It’s roughly an even mixture of inmates and low-level Rangers on shit duty. And impossible to discern who is who.

Howl watches Bobby stab through a mostly full can of beer. “Nice,” they say, an attempt at making conversation, “that one was juicy.”

“That, mostly,” Howl says, grasping onto that tendril of thought and riding it out like a pro-wakeboarder. This person was going to be their boss. He didn’t need to know the whole sob-story-weirdly-chaotic-childhood-gender-nonconformity-hullabaloo that Howl was currently shooting the wave through. “Mostly… being out of Kanto, yeah.” It was not a great place, all personal things aside.

Howl’s file must’ve looked a mess. There was quite a large cult following behind their mother’s TV shows, plural, and the ones Howl had been in as a child were some of her most popular. Which meant there was a cult following behind Howl, too.

Howl wondered what their name was listed as in Lars’ file.

“Uh, I mean,” Howl shrugged, thumbs twiddling in their lap as though they’d been put on the hot seat, “why not Hoenn?” Tickets were cheap-- must’ve been the meteor thing. Immigration here was also significantly easier than other places-- maybe the Rocket connections? Maybe, again, the meteor thing?

“It’s, like. Just crazy enough here that I can have a purpose without, maybe, also, dying?” It was hard to summarize that sentiment in words but there it was. “Immediately,” they amended, remembering the meteor thing.

Howl is that cadet that was volunteered to go to the Pokemart with Tam to get food for the Pokemon at Ranger HQ. Or, rather, the cadet that was thrown to the wolves-- here they are now, with slavering jaw and gnashing teeth. Oh, wait, that’s not wolves, that’s two white ladies fighting over a bottle of CoffeeMate.

Tam-- their new buddy Tam, the good ol’ Tam-tam, Tameroon, Tampani drum, Tampax pearl-- didn’t seem at all phased by the noise and light and crush of disorderly bodies. Howl swallowed, and bent down to grab a plastic basket that had been discarded on the floor, hurrying to catch up with Tam.

“Shouldn’t we--,” they started, then swallowed the words. “Aren’t we--,” they tried again, “like, the authorities? Shouldn’t we… interfere? Sir?”

Not that he was, like, way up the chain of command, but he was definitely a higher rank than Howl.

Howl makes a face, lips pressing into a thin line. They don’t really think anyone should be applauding Blais’ scorched-earth policy, but, hey. Points for positivity?

“He’s just kind of an ass, sometimes,” Howl says, ruffling the fur on Blais’ larval head affectionately. “I wish he could do a good job without being an ass, though.”

Blais twiddles his little front feeties in a returned gesture of fondness.

“I’m glad your shoulder is okay,” but Howl looks up to realize that the stranger has moved on to find out what their Corvisquire’s are all up in arms about. They’re about to beat a hasty and awkward retreat when Fenris leans back and gestures them on.

“Oh… yeah, okay,” Howl scoops up Blais again and hurries after, catching up just in time to watch the corvids make short work of the Gallade. “Nice catch," Howl says, about to further comment on the teamwork and strategy when they feel Blais getting hot under their arm again. They drop him with a hiss as he flame wheels into a Nincada that had been watching them from the cave ceiling, dropping the little bug to the ground in a blackened, smoking, twitching mess.

“God damn it, Blais,” Howl hisses, collecting the downed Nincada in a Pokeball. “Please stop being a menace to the cave fauna.” Or at least give them a second to introduce themselves.

Blais just twiddles his feeties, gloating.
