But honestly, to hell with this. As long as he had Wren, the other two could do whatever they wanted. If she wanted to skip merrily into the clutches of the Volcanion, which were far from pleasant he recalled, that was on her.

"What?" He couldn't help the impatience in his tone as Wren offered to back them up. "No, Wren we need to go." Of course, leave it to the other man to put his life unnecessarily on the line. Letting Salandit loose, the lizard plopped down beside Winston and let loose a large belch of POISON GAS separating them from the volcanion, giving luka chêne no path to make it back towards the tower.

Part of Levy felt a little... guilty? Like he was leading Wren on to a dead-end path. If this was any other world, maybe he'd be less of a coward because he knew that Wren made him feel some kind of way. Yet that always made him feel nervous and jumpy, as if Wren were even capable of hurting him. The other boy couldn't hurt a cutiefly, clearly. But he also didn't want to be the one to hurt Wren, because unlike the other, he actually could hurt a cutiefly. He would feel bad, but that was the way of the world.

Not that he'd admit to that, of course. For now, wasn't it good enough just to be friends? Admittedly, he latched onto the idea a little forcefully. It was a gentle and sweet thing, this friendship. He craved that comfort like a starving man craved for food.

"No, don't. You don't need to be. Trust me." So much for not leading him on to hurt though. Maybe he'd address it at some point, this obvious point of contention. Wren deserved to know the truth, didn't he?

That question provoked a thought and it probably wasn't what the other was thinking when he asked. Though he didn't blame Wren just because his life was a mess. "Sometimes... not all the time, but..." He shrugged at that, not really sure how to explain it. Had this been years ago, back when he was under the "care" of his mother, that answer would be very different. The need to hide and run away was almost constant. Hide or get hurt.

He forced himself to brighten up despite the dreary thought. "Yeah, they got great pancakes. And milkshakes." An odd combination, but he was a little odd. The diner in question was a little shabby, a little dingy, a little tacky. He liked it anyways. And, of course, he order pancakes and a chocolate shake.

Makeup tutorial. He suppressed the urge to sigh and whine over what had to be the dumbest assignment he'd ever been subjected to. The last thing he wanted to do was make an enemy out of the other man. Maybe Mint took this seriously, but Levy sure didn't. He had never seen the point in makeup and he'd spent years on the outskirts of other people's attention. He was a fly on the wall, a barely noteworthy orphan. What did he need makeup and espionage training for?

"Yeah," He didn't quite hide his lacking enthusiasm though. He wasn't perfect, after all. He looked down at the chattering zigzagoon, hands tucked into his pockets before forcing himself to relax a little. "Yes, sir." A little overtly formal, maybe. He didn't really know how to read this guy yet, which was a shame. "Okay, where do we start then?"

"Still, don't like hurting you, dummy." He smiled, teasing the other. It was nice— how soft they could be when they put all the struggles they'd endured aside. It wasn't a matter of guilt or blame. It wasn't advantage or disadvantage or repercussion for actions. This just felt... well it was like the clearest expression of love, innocent and passionate. Wasn't that good enough?

Levy knew he could be negative and a little bitter. Wren made him better, of course, but he didn't want that to bleed into their relationship anymore. Wounds from the past shouldn't have the ability to affect his future, right? This was a choice that he was making and he'd never regret that. He silenced the little voices in the back of his head. They didn't matter, only this did.

As gently as he could, he pushed Wren until the other was laid back against the bed and he was hovered over him. His hands pushed at the fabric of the other's shirt, shifting it upwards until pale skin was revealed to him. His mouth traced down the delicate curve of Wren's throat and his hands traveled over skin. "Is this okay?" He asked, a little nervous.

An easy job could easily turn sour, he realized that by this point. It certainly had in the past for him. Admittedly, he still felt out of practice in things. It wasn't always natural doing the things that Rocket required and he had pressure from both sides to do what was needed. It made it easier though to have someone obviously more schooled in it at his side.

Don't pity the defenseless, maybe Oscar had a point in that. After all, no one had pitied him. They forced him to be strong and he accepted the price of weakness, so why should he offer anything else? "Yeah suppose you're right. Though, admittedly, it doesn't feel like it's getting easier." Maybe he'd regret admitting to that in front of a beast. "Yeah, I'm ready."

"Well that's what makes you good, you don't think about it." It was natural for Wren to be like that and Levy loved him for that reason. Hell, he'd loved him since the day the little idiot decided to make him his friend. It had been through a lot of effort and not much return, but Wren had stuck by him. There was a lot that Levy should feel thankful for and he was still in the process of getting used to it all.

It felt like an skill, accepting things for what they were. A skill that Levy was untrained and clumsy at best with. As with all other things, wren was his exception and he wanted to make him realize how much he appreciated it, without being overwhelmingly sappy about it. Aka easier said than done, even if Wren liked sappy shit.

Levy saw a dewpider silently slipping through the weedy grass. Galvantula gave it a little shock and he quickly followed up with a pokeball to capture. He didn't know why he was drawn to bugs, they were weird but so was he.

Levy couldn't help but smile at that, really smile. No one had ever offered to protect him like that, even if the point had gone astray. There was no reason for Wren to protect him, after all he got himself into these situations. Maybe if he kept his mouth shut, he wouldn't get into these fights to begin with, but he couldn't. Too much pride.

"Yeah, most people." He said with a laugh. Levy wasn't really one of them, but he didn't actually think Wren was a bad boy. Wren apologized to garden plants when he accidentally stepped on them. There wasn't likely a bad bone in his body and, admittedly, that was what Levy liked about him. He cared. No one else had the kindness that Wren possessed.

"Uhhh... yeah." He felt a little guilty admitting the truth, not that it was exactly hard to swallow, considering he was quite naturally slipping out of school. The difference was that he was now taking Wren out with him. He was a shitty influence on the other for sure. Still, it was nice not to do it alone. "It's nice to have company for once though." Wren made him honest where he wanted to lie.

He squeezed the other's hand back, figuring that he was simply nervous about getting caught. Before long, they were free of school grounds. Levy sighed in relief, glad that he wasn't dragging the other into more detentions. He laughed at that. "Not really... guess I'm just used to being sneaky when I need to."

Well shit. He was caught, wasn't he? Not that it necessarily mattered. It wasn't a doctor, but rather... well.. maybe it mattered more. This was an admin after all. They'd never spoken before, but Levy made an effort to know the faces and names of people that mattered. jayden cross mattered, in Rocket at least.

Being caught by an admin was probably less ideal than even being caught by a doctor in this instance. Still, despite everything, he didn't lie. "Leaving. I can't be here." Not for any specific reason besides the fact these walls made his skin itch. They made terrible memories resurface. "But you're going to stop me, aren't you?" He scoffed lightly, pausing in his efforts.

Keeping it contained had always been a necessity, one that he couldn't afford to be careless with. The repercussions used to be more though, back then. It used to feel like a life or death choice. To be himself, open and emotional, or to hide behind a frigid wall. Yet, that wasn't necessary anymore, was it? Not with Wren at least.

"Oh sorry.." He'd forgotten the other was also not in the best of conditions. They were both worse for wear and that reminder made a spike of guilt cut through him. Yet he was almost entirely distracted from it by the other tugging him up on top of him. He could feel his entire face heat up, looking down at the other. Yet he relaxed as their foreheads touched, such a simple action and yet it silenced every trace of anxiety in his head.

"I missed you too." He breathed, a little unsteady though not out of pain this time. Hands swept across his skin — warm, soft, careful. Lips pressed earnestly against his own and he returned it with just as much want. It was a step beyond what he knew what to do. It wasn't the first time he'd ever... well, it was the only time that mattered so it might as well have been. With an anxious shiver, his own hands slipped forward, plucking at the hem of the other's shirt before his fingers slipped beneath.

Levy somewhat lacked in patience. Especially having dealt with Rocket and the curtness of those missions. This was nothing like that, it was a little absurd now to look at the comparison of it all.

The only person that he did have patience for was acting a little... odd. Not really odd, considering Wren was almost always the touchy feely sort. But maybe not in a dangerous mechanical world, considering Levy had warned him beforehand. He looked over at him, head tilted. "Are you alright?" Maybe he was simply awkward with public affection. No, that was definitely his problem. There was no maybe to it. He could feel it in his cheeks and his only means of handling awkwardness was to avoid it. "Give me a sec," He said, hand smoothing over the shorter boy's hair before stepping away, putting the space between them. A separate path led away from the group. While he had no intention to stick out in the crowd, he was still there for a job and, really, this was taking wayyy too long.

Bingo. He spied the necessary gear for the clocktower.... behind a group of inactive volcanion. That was okay, he could be quiet. He cast a glance back, hand up to keep them at bay before moving closer. His footsteps were soft, barely there. Remnants of a past he'd tried to leave behind, but it clung on instinctually. In every move, in every action, every response to a movement that was too fast. Violent exaggerations to affection. Like a scared stray dog, flinching under the motion of a hand. Yeah, he was a mess, but he was still street savvy enough to slip past the volcanion undetected to retrieve the gear.

If the music was coming from the clock tower, they'd find out. Or this was going to be a bad idea over all. Very likely the latter.

Having slipped back away from the quiet metal monsters. He twisted the gear around and plugged it into the absent space in the tower He looked back to Wren and Luka to see if that had quieted the sound, but then the clock tower rung. The sound of it made the ground vibrate. Well shit. Really, he'd seen that coming but did it anyways. That really was the story of his life, wasn't it? Then, the volcanion started clicking back to life.

Levy didn't exactly love the great outdoors, but Wren made it worth it.

He smiled at that, "Oh you do, do you?" It felt a little bizarre, after so many years being best friends. Was love supposed to come so easily? Though, the truth was he'd been in love with Wren since the day he met him and that hadn't changed. He'd simply hidden it away. Why? Because he'd been afraid. He found, that he was afraid of a great many things. All that time pretending to be unaffected by the world, all one big stupid lie.

Admittedly, Levy was quick to jealousy. Though, he didn't think it necessary out of a toxic source. He was simply afraid and he knew he was. He had to have faith that Wren would still continue to like him, and if he didn't? Well... then he'd have to be okay letting him go. That was the way things worked. He wasn't on the streets or in the suffocating space of his mother's home. This mattered to him. It was real, and it as too important to risk tearing it apart because he was insecure. "You're always so nice, you know that?" He laughed, but in a soft way. He loved that about Wren.

Wren tugged him into a quick kiss and he didn't note the venomoth that glided carelessly by.

Levy frowned at that, considering he didn't hear anything then. It had been different last time, but he'd also known there was something unnatural about the sound, almost a little too compelling in the music. "Try to ignore it," He said, specifically to Wren. Anything that pushed on Levy's feelings was usually considered negative, so he didn't trust it.

His attention was, instead, focused on the clocktower ahead of them as he neared. He could feel Wren's hand looped through his own, which stymied his insistence to get moving. This was taking too long and before much longer their presence would be noted. That was how this place worked, right? Granted, they hadn't been here before.

"Not the clocktower, there's gears missing." He noted, gesturing toward the tower's interiors, opened like a wound for all to see. It felt strangely like looking into the innards of a long-dead beast. He slipped away from Wren to get a closer look. The gear had to be close-by, right?

Then beyond the tower, he spied the volcanions. The automaton pokemon didn't seem active, but the sheer number of them was alarming. "Shit."

"No, you're okay." Sadly, he was just a jumpy person in general. It was a trait he'd learned after years of being on his own. It wasn't a habit that he found particularly easy to wean off of. It was nice though, to have a break from his own thoughts, for once.

There were probably a hundred better ways to enjoy the new year than drinking with a stranger, but he didn't want to risk her friendliness. Even if he was usually quick to disregard others as props in his own life. "Yeah... company is better than nothing at all."
