She didn’t know a lick of information about the guy climbing into the ring, followed by his garchomp. And really, Blue didn’t care to find out just then. They were here to fight, to be a spectacle for those who craved gladiator violence. Not sit and swap chitchat.[break][break]

A quick once over, though, gave her the impression that the damage to his eye was fairly new. She could work with that.[break][break]

Pokémon versus Pokémon, trainer versus trainer. Though the people mostly came to see Pokémon brawls, fighting for herself was more her own personal style. They were just getting a little extra to what they signed up for. A little more bang for their buck.

A low click of her tongue sent Fang forward first, the lucario hurtling toward their opponent’s garchomp, fist clenched paws charging up as it came right out the gate aiming a METEOR MASH at the dragon-type. The crowd wanted a show? They would get one.[break][break]

Blue moved in tandem, moving low as Fang leapt high. First, a feint, and then a jab leveled at the man’s blind side. Hopefully he wasn’t expecting a clean fight or any sort of sportsmanship. Blue wasn’t there to offer as much. She’d been taught to fight with a dog-eat-dog tenacity, and honestly, she’d be a bit disappointed if he didn’t offer the same brutality.

Who knows how long she will be in this job. Blue certainly doesn’t. It’s not exactly what she had in mind when she agreed to join Rocket, and playing it lowkey isn’t exactly her strength (already the Fortree captain has had her evaluated by Shinra Moro.)[break][break]

But these are the orders she was given, so they are the ones she’s follows.[break][break]

She doesn’t know why Callie apparently trusts her so easily, or is so happy to have found her. It runs contrary to everything Blue has told herself in the subsequent years. Her smile is an awkward thing, head tilting. “That’s a nice thing to do.”[break][break]

And she does mean that, at least. Even if Blue feels little to no affection for the place they’d grown up. Callie had been the one good thing, and she had left.[break][break]

“Yeah, I think it’s more busy work than actual necessity,” she says with a shrug. And with a wave of her hand, her Lucario, Fang, leans up off the tree he was resting against and lopes after them.[break][break]

“Maybe needs a clean up.” Again, veritable busy work.

If they were to actually pause and talk about it, they’d find a shared trait in their lack of social friendliness. Blue was much the same, perpetually lonely while craving solitary comfort. She wasn’t the same sort of workaholic, but all the noise she used to fill the void wasn’t ever of the social, chatty variety.[break][break]

She burned hot, but it was more the sort of burn that came with a severe freeze.[break][break]

“What’s this whole fuckin’ quid pro quo Silence of the Mareep shit?” she groused, “Think you’re Hannibal Lecter or something? Sheesh.” Why did he have to make it so difficult? The whole run around was a hassle. She just wanted a pass and she’d get back to what she was doing. Which was using her clearances to get info. But that was for Blue to know.[break][break]

“Well, now I feel that way,” she huffed irritably. She thought she’d been doing a decent job at covering her tracks and playing the part. Apparently not. As his questioning turned back toward her friend Blue looked away, “I had thought she hated me. So, I don’t know.”[break][break]

Had there been good things to talk about? Blue wasn’t sure. The orphanage had come up, but she didn’t think she held the same nostalgic fondness for it that Callie apparently did. Blue stabbed at her plate instead of saying more, shoving a mess of egg and hash brown into her mouth.

She twisted, curving away from a quick jab, and that’s when she caught it, caught him— the stark, silvery white hair and sharp, icy blue in his eyes. Cold, collected interest. Blue froze, muscles and joints locking up like a startled deerling caught in the headlights of a car as cold dread eased through her system, cutting through the heat of her adrenaline.[break][break]

Caught. He found her.[break][break]

All of this in the span of a few seconds. Her voice is a hiss, though she wouldn’t be heard over the roar of the crowd, even with her ruby eyes locked in his. “Shi—“ Whether she meant to curse or say his name was anyone’s guess because time caught up and the second jab of her opponent’s quick 1-2 went unblocked.[break][break]

It wasn’t ever meant to be a clean find, so the hit caught her in the temple and static rang between her ears and there was a burst of blood in her mouth from biting her tongue. Blue reeled, staggering back from the punch before springing forward again.[break][break]

How dare he find her here. Woozy dizzy steps, she launched her full body weight at her opponent until they toppled. And then she was on them, pummeling them with quick hits, blood spray pluming up to paint her face.[break][break]

Annoyed, she ignored the mingled taunts and cheers awarded her for her victory, and slipped under the ropes of the ring to hop down and walk away. She didn’t know if he’d follow her, but Blue expected him to for some reason. The jig was up, after all.[break][break]

Her gaze turned downward, staring at her feet as they walked. “That’s true. Maybe that would be good.”[break][break]

She’s so angry. Almost all of the time. Her emotional dial for any sort of feeling always seems to be turned to eleven. Using her fists helps. It’s the only way she knows.[break][break]

But she’s tired too. Exhausted.[break][break]

“Will that work, though? Or will it make me..worse?” It’s the only word she can draw. A more terrible, loathsome creature than she already is, left unchecked.[break][break]

A vulnerable conversation is not what she expected of her day, and it turns her surly, hands shoving in her pockets and feet kicking at pebbles as he scoops the happiny up. Tenderness seems odd for him.[break][break]

She can relate.[break][break]

"It...it was a suggestion from a friend!" she bleated out, cheeks darkening further still. As if she had to justify way she wasn't all schlubby like usual. The reaction bubbling up in her was foreign. Completely unknown. It had to be the sazerac. Or...or what she'd had before coming over to Howling. That was causing the heat under her skin, and the spin in her head. It wasn't him repeating himself. It wasn't.[break][break]

It wasn't because she felt she knew him better now because of her snooping, even though Shinra didn't know she'd looked into his history before turning up in Hoenn on loan from interpol. It wasn't because she felt a weird sort of kinship with where he'd come from. How it mirrored her own time as a child.[break][break]

It was just the drinking. Maybe she was the drunker one.[break][break]

"You have to be," she continued to babble indignantly, brows pinching together. "To think...that." Why would he think that she was cute? She was like a case study. She wasn't his client, and there wasn't some inhibitor. But he'd been required to evaluate her. Wasn't that enough of a deterrent. Even more than that, the general...herness? Blue wasn't a desirable person, she'd never thought so. She was never made to believe it.[break][break]

So despite that inherent want for approval and acceptance, that want for somebody to see her differently, as wantable...it felt almost frightening to consider. There'd be some ulterior motive. Some reason to use her for their gain.[break][break]

Not that she really thought Shinra was deeming her as someone he wanted anything to do with, but still. It was a little aggravating he was causing all these thoughts in her already hazy head in the first place.[break][break]

Cute.[break][break]

Her annoyance didn't linger, though (also annoying,) when he began to explain. Her gaze shifted away, down to her glass as she spun it between her palms where it rested on the bartop. "You don't really seem like the merry sort." Her dry words were followed by a short snort, amused. "That's okay, though. I'm not really, either."[break][break]

Blue gives him a sidelong glance. "Do I strike you as festive?" She'd never had any real reason to enjoy holidays. They were just there and she existed through them. She wasn't a merry-maker or overtly cheerful. But she wasn't really the sort to dump on someone else for being that way, unless they really gave her a justifiable reason to. Mostly, she just stayed home. "How do you think it'll get better, though? Before the end of the year? That's literally, like, hours away. Maybe not even that."[break][break]

She'd lost track of the exact time ages ago.

Her head tilts, “Huh, I guess you’re not wrong. Though I’m not sure what you’d think me to be better at.”[break][break]

She has a love hate relationship to the brawling rings she keeps crawling back to in the Slateport underbelly. She doesn’t want to be there, she doesn’t know where else to be.[break][break]

“I’m not sure.” It’s the most honest answer she can give. A part of her craves the andrenaline and the anger, but another part finds some solace in being far away from it. Even if she inevitably caves and returns, for a little while, she can pretend she’s other. Though she’s apparently not all too good at it, and the PD is a bit stifling.[break][break]

Her attention is not fixated on the Pokémon that wander around. She simply observes him.

A sazerac was slipped across the bar top to her waiting hands. She studied the man beside her carefully, fully expecting the coy twist of his grin, or the glint in his eyes that liked to insinuate that he was staring straight through her. Oddly enough, Blue found neither.[break][break]

Her head tilted, a soft frown slipping across her face as he lingered over his pause. “Me…” she drawled back, head swiveling in a way that indicated he should continue. In the meantime, her glass lifted to her lips to drink from it. Masking the fact that she felt a bit strange over the delay, and the way he was observing her. It felt markedly different from the normal, sly and cold glint in the sharp blue of his eyes. Must be a trick of the light. It was a bit dim in there, after all.[break][break]

The liquor slid down her throat with a mellow burn, only to nearly shoot back up in a hacking cough when Shinra finally found his words.[break][break]

Cute. Blue didn’t know how to describe what she felt just then— the heightened prickle of self-consciousness that she had already been feeling intensified, but there was a slight twist of pleasure to it now. Like she was pleased to have been noticed. (Maybe that wasn’t so surprising, given her deep seeded need to be seen.) But she wasn’t accustomed to the reaction being prompted by her looks.[break][break]

And from Shinra of all people. “Are your eyes working?” she asked, but it lacked bite. Instead, it came out dumbfounded. Setting her drink down, her hands lifted to her face. Her cheeks were hot. Why? Maybe she was coming down with a fever.[break][break]

Her hands remained planted on her face for a bit longer as Blue tried to will the warmth to fade. Eventually, though, one returned to her tumbler, fingers curling around the sweating glass as a regained smirk flashed at him. “How drunk are you, exactly? Should I catch up?” She scoffed.[break][break]

The remnants of her prior drinking seemed to soften of her sharper edges, mellowing her out as more alcohol padded that softening. “Uh, I like to drink here, duh? What are you doing in a rat’s nest?”

She is distracted by a behemoth of her own— though rather than face the aromas released by an amoonguss, it’s a krookodile that lumbers out, full of MOXIE, and looking ready to rumble.[break][break]

It probably thinks one opponent is easy pickings, but with a sharp whistle from Blue, both houndour and poochyena dart forward circling it rapidly, the circle closing tighter and together with snapping BITES.

The close quarters causes the large lizard to tumble forward, unable to twist and use much dexterity. SatisfiedX, she chances throwing out a pokeball.[break][break]

With the moment passed, her attention drifts tiredly back to Mars. Only to sharpen the moment he properly introduces himself. Though her formality is also a bit questionable. “Oh. Hello, sir.”[break][break]

Her head tilts, “That still did not answer my question, though.”

Uh uh. No way. Blue sidled up to the bar, sliding into the one stool that was miraculously left open– and of course it was next to that familiar build and silvery white head of hair that she’d come to be a bit more familiar with than she’d care to admit. Out of necessity, she told herself. Even that was partially a lie.[break][break]

“Are you trying to predict my movements before I make them now?” She asked dryly, elbows propping on the bartop as she waggled her hand at the bartender to pull his attention. Then her fingers laced together and Blue settled her chin in the cradle of them as she looked sideways at Shinra, brows raised.[break][break]

She didn’t mean it, of course. There was no way he would have known that she’d show up there. But it was strange– she didn’t mind seeing him tonight. Maybe it was the information she’d managed to dig up on him. Maybe it was the lazy curl of prior drinks weaving through her system at The Ritual before she’d made her way over to Howling. More her speed, though really, when she cared to drink it was usually some cheap six-pack she dragged back to her lousy excuse for an apartment.[break][break]

Sprawled out on her mattress on the floor, empty cans littering the space beside it. That was pretty pathetic.[break][break]

But tonight she actually looked sorta nice. Dressed a little more. Hair actually brushed and neatly put together after insistence from CALLISTA MOON that if they were going out, maybe it was better if she didn’t look like she’d just crawled out of some dumpster or back alley (these were Blue’s words, and not her friend’s, of course.)[break][break]

Granted, the sentiment was…accurate. She had no accomplishments, no great purpose. Why shouldn’t she look the part? Alas, she was neat and dressed nicely, and desperately needed more liquor to distract her from the awkward discomfort of it. The way she felt like an imposter in her own skin for daring to look just a little different.[break][break]

Bothering Shinra might help too. Did he not recognize her, or was he just ignoring her? “Hey, you gonna answer me, Shitra?” Or maybe she was just too lost in her own head to have heard any prior answer he might’ve provided.

She was a brawler spit up in Slateport as soon as she managed to leave Johto. One of the grimiest pennies in the city’s underbelly. Shouldn’t be any sort of use. Though—[break][break]

Her chaos is often contained and reserved for the fighting rings. She’s not totally unhinged like Richard, who turns his STEEL CLAWS on the next available target to fight and catch—this time a nickit literally minding its own business.

Still— “Why attend at all, then?” she asks out of simple curiosity before whistling a sharp note to draw the canines back to her sides where they stand sentinel. One carries the ultra ball housing the newly caught incineroar to drop it into her open palm. A dustox flutters overhead, ignored by Blue and her duo.[break][break]

Perhaps he’s simply a glutton for violence. Or perhaps he’s running betting schemes on the side, under the radar of the ring organizers. She won’t do anything with whatever answer he provides—it will simply be filed away somewhere in the back of her mind.
