Blue rolls her shoulders, then stretches out her back—relishing in the popping noise and the relief of tension that follows. She’s nursing a few sore spots, like a tender bruise swelling on her cheek, and there’s definitely bound to be a galaxy of violet blooming along her ribcage under her athletic gear.[break][break]

She doesn’t mind, though. She’s too busy riding the high of her string of wins from that night’s matches as she steps out into the brisk evening and heads away from the warehouse where the ring had set up temporary shop. Maybe the encouragement previously found in Antoinette Spina was exactly the boost she’d needed. Blue had looked for her in the crowd, but hadn’t seen her tonight.[break][break]

Not the type to linger, though, she put space between herself and the building, rubbing at her taped wrists. Eventually, she sent out her paired up poochyena and houndour. Who knows what, who, they’d find out here at this hour.

It had been under blond disguise that he had been watching the matches: Tuesday, known Team Rocket contact. Yet, once it was all said and done with, once his business by the ring had concluded, the disguise had been abandoned quickly enough, and out here, in the outskirts of Slateport’s lower district, it’s Martín del Mar that calmly walks with his usual Persian by his side.

Granted, he’s dressed much more casually than what he normally would, but there’s a certain comfort in the way that he walks through the lower district’s streets – perhaps a result of frequenting them or perhaps a result of sheer confidence.

Whatever the answer may be, it’s the Persian that notices blue murtagh first.

The crimson eyes of the large feline fix on her, and as if both a greeting and a way to warn his master, he lets out a low prusten. Mars looks at her then, his own eyes golden.

”Oh. You’re one of the fighters, aren’t you?”

He’s casual, but he knows the answer to the question. After all, he had seen her, and more than that, as an underboss he’s well aware of which Rocket members are counted among the regular participants.

Suddenly, she’s faced with free time now that the matches have concluded. What’s she supposed to do with that? Relax? She doesn’t really know the word. Two things seem to happen at once: a crowbat swoops down over them at random, wide, leering grin on its face. And when she looks back ahead of them, a man and his persian have crossed her path.[break][break]

Maybe his face is familiar, maybe it’s not. She’s a bit too worn out to discern just then.[break][break]

While Cassidy is distracted by bringing down the crobat—first, by TAUNTING it until it draws close enough for her to chomp down on one fluttering wing with FIRE FANG, Butch remains steadfastly at Blue’s side. He watches the Persian with equally wary eyes, a low rumbling in the back of his throat.[break][break]

Her hand falls down to rest between two cinder gray ears. For a moment, Blue looks away. Only to toss a pokeball in the direction of the crobat before the houndour makes a chew toy of it. Then her attention returns to Mars. “Yeah. And?”

There’s a certain calm to these streets at night. The same kind of streets that would be so terribly busy during the day. While most people sleep, he walks under dim lights, noticing the way some of them flicker on occasion, causing the creatures that lurk in the shadows to stir.

One of them is a stray Houndour, much like the one stands by blue murtagh. This one, however, isn’t satisfied with merely growling at Dollar; it steps closer, defensive, and as a result, the Persian growls right back at it, his ears flicking back. Only when Mars clicks his tongue does Dollar attack, emitting a WATER PULSE that drenches the flaming pup. Growling turns to whimpers soon enough, and a Luxury Ball silences them when attempting to capture the Houndour in its confines.

”Nothing.” Says Mars as if nothing had just happened, nonchalance marking both his tone and attitude. Yet, where there is nonchalance, there is also the sharpness to his golden gaze – never a man to lower his guard. ”You did well out there, that’s all.”

He keeps on walking, taking the Luxury Ball when Dollar brings it back.

In the still of the streets, she can hear herself think more clearly. This, in Blue’s book, is a distinct problem. So the distractions are welcome ones, even if she behaves as if they are inconvenient.[break][break]

When had all these Pokémon decided to crawl out of the woodwork. An incineroar lurches from the darkness to be illuminated by a nearby street lamp. Butch isn’t having any of it. The poochyena departs from his trainer’s side as Cassidy returns.[break][break]

Circling the much larger feline, he snaps and snarls. Then finally darts in under the swipe of claws to CRUNCH at its back feet so that the yowling cat is felled and topples like an old oak tree.[break][break]

Blue watches mutely, then whistles to call Butch back as she throws a pokeball out at the incineroar in his wake. She speaks as she does so, not looking over at the man. “Ah, I appreciate it.”[break][break]

It is only after a pause that her glance flicks back to him. “If that’s so, did the bets fall in your favor?”

“To each their own,” she replies with a short shrug of one shoulder. It’s not a bad stance to hold, she supposes. If you don’t bet, you can’t lose.[break][break]

Still— “Why attend at all, then?” she asks out of simple curiosity before whistling a sharp note to draw the canines back to her sides where they stand sentinel. One carries the ultra ball housing the newly caught incineroar to drop it into her open palm. A dustox flutters overhead, ignored by Blue and her duo.[break][break]

Perhaps he’s simply a glutton for violence. Or perhaps he’s running betting schemes on the side, under the radar of the ring organizers. She won’t do anything with whatever answer he provides—it will simply be filed away somewhere in the back of her mind.

There’s the question: Why attend at all, then?

It’s the obvious thing to ask, but to Mars it denotes a few simple truths. Truths like the fact that she probably has no idea who he is, and that she either suspects that he’s involved in some shady dealings or is actually clueless as to what he may have gone to the fights for. For blue murtagh’s sake, he hopes it's not the latter – she seems smart enough to understand the environment she’s working in.

”Ah…” Before he can explain, a SWEET SCENT fills the air and Dollar growls low, looking in the direction of an Amoonguss that seems to intend to attack them. Mars clicks his tongue, and when he does so, the Persian attacks, dealing with the wild pokémon.

Calmly, Mars looks around as if ensuring the Amoonguss didn’t have any company, his attention soon returning to the woman.

”I suppose that if I introduce myself it’ll make sense…” Here, in this empty street in the middle of the night, he offers a firm handshake, his gaze meeting hers. There’s something cold in his eyes of gold, and the slight smirk that tugs at his lips is as sharp as a blade. ”Underboss Del Mar.”

She is distracted by a behemoth of her own— though rather than face the aromas released by an amoonguss, it’s a krookodile that lumbers out, full of MOXIE, and looking ready to rumble.[break][break]

It probably thinks one opponent is easy pickings, but with a sharp whistle from Blue, both houndour and poochyena dart forward circling it rapidly, the circle closing tighter and together with snapping BITES.

The close quarters causes the large lizard to tumble forward, unable to twist and use much dexterity. SatisfiedX, she chances throwing out a pokeball.[break][break]
