Blue eyes the stopwatch for a moment. Her stare only flits up to connect with his evenly before she takes off after them. Should he be looking for it, he’ll note the flash of challenge in the red of her irises. Or rather, the acceptance of it.[break][break]

It’s a good thing that she’s in good shape despite her poorer eating habits. It’s something the fighting rings and active work on the police force have kept tip-top for her, whether she wants to admit it or not. So it’s not difficult for her to ascend the levels of the mountain, sight still trained on her poochyena.[break][break]

Bonnie seems to catch a scent and veers off toward the right.[break][break]

She follows, but all that’s found is an abandoned mountain bike. “Good. Track, find.” The canine gives it a good whiff then darts back toward the main path. [break][break]

Maybe they knew someone was coming? Why abandon the bicycle in favor of walking or running, if not for irrational, fear-driven thought?

Both of the poochyena flanking her are decked in k-9 tactical gear, the two trained as a working pair. She’s had them since before working for the PD, but Bonnie and Clyde have at least assisted her cover.[break][break]

They’re better actors than she is, probably.[break][break]

Red eyes cut to his stoutland, then back to him. Is she meant to outpace it?[break][break]

She doesn’t stop to ask this time, and instead clicks her tongue twice, then turns toward a rockier outcrop higher up the mount.[break][break]

The poochyena are trained to work together, but they surge ahead and split in a V with her at the point. Both utilizing ODOR SLEUTH to track the moving target in question.[break][break]

Her frown deepened when he laughed. It seemed like an unprompted sound. Unintended, but earnest. Which was strange considering her interaction with him up to that point. Blue’s brows pinched together, a small crease forming between them as she struggled to pin down just exactly what his game was. “Yeah, Norman Bates. Give it a rest.” All she could really think to do at that moment was to play it straight, and deliver those punchlines as seriously and flatly as she could manage.[break][break]

Not that she really felt all that lighthearted right then, or like laughing along with him. She was the one in the hot seat, after all. Blue resumed stabbing at her food in aggravation. Dissecting it more than actually eating it. Suddenly, her appetite had diminished. “Oh no, you can’t backtrack your way out of that now,” she grumbled, eyes flicking up to his then back down to her plate. “I’m not that stupid, thanks.” She didn’t believe the white lie one bit. Concern? When had they ever shown concern for something like her wellbeing since she’d turned up? Not that she’d made it easy to care about her, but they didn’t exactly respect her one way or another, did they?[break][break]

They recognized gum on the bottom of a shoe easily. The otherness of her. And that would have been the case whether she’d come in as she had now, affiliated to Rocket, or in an honest and genuine attempt to make her life better than it was. They knew she wasn’t any better than the litter that the beat cop rookies were forced to write up infraction tickets for.[break][break]

Easy to throw away as soon as she was an inconvenience.[break][break]

And obviously, she’d become that.[break][break]

“Maybe. She’s better than I am.” She thinks I’m something I’m not, was the subtext there.[break][break]

Blue tossed her fork down and leaned back in her seat again, arms folding as she fixed him with a stubborn look. “I don’t even know what your opinion is.” Her eyes cut away then. “I get into fights a lot.” That was the only answer provided.

Blue huffed, expression still petulant. “Yeah, you better.” It had to be the alcohol fueling her behavior now—making her flustered and bratty, though in a way that almost invited him to continue. It should probably have been a relief that he relented, but her eyes slowly drifted back toward him, curious.[break][break]

And he was watching her back.[break][break]

Her face flushed again, but rather than look away, her head tilted. Something in her stomach twisted nervously when he smiled at her. An honest smile. Not the ones she’d become accustomed to in the time since she’d met him. The hollow, conniving ones that teased warmth but never truly were. Funny, she felt funny.[break][break]

Like she was a soda bottle that someone had come and shook up, the contents waiting for a pressure release before rocket outward. And why was it suddenly sort of disappointing when he said probably wouldn’t remember? “You know, it’s not very nice to basically tell someone they’re forgettable,” she huffed, arms folding as her chin tipped up snootily. “‘Specially after complimenting them.”[break][break]

Who was she right now?

“I’m not a kid.” Her nose wrinkled in distaste. And as if to prove that, she downed the rest of her drink before hailing the bartender for another round. Heat continued to simmer in her cheeks. “Keep calling me cute and sayin’ the year is better ‘cause I’m here feels an awful like bein’ chatted up..” she remarked, voice full of skepticism.[break][break]

Or maybe it was just the fact that she was so disused to it that words like that stood out like a sore thumb whenever she received them.[break][break]

“Nah, you’re sorta alright, I guess,” she replied, lips twisting coyly as she looked away toward her new, refreshed glass.

Even more so why she was so hellbent on finding out the why of it when she should’ve just ducked him and gotten out of there while she had the chance.[break][break]

She caught him following, and quickly deviated her path. Hid herself in the fringes of the crowd until she could see him emerge, looking around. It was only then that she revealed herself, hand reaching up to yank him down by the front of his shirt. There was still blood spattered across her face that she hadn’t bothered to wipe away yet.[break][break]

“What do you think you’re doing here?” she hissed, not caring if the fingers balled in his sullied it, or made his stance awkward or uncomfortable. “You’ve figured out my little secret.” Sort of. “Happy? Pleased? There you go.”[break][break]

Blue continued to glare at him for a moment longer before releasing his shirt roughly. Always careful not to make actual contact. “Dunno what you want anyway.” Not from this scummy place, not from her.

Rather than focus on the honchkrow swooping above them, Blue listens to Mars as he speaks, head tilted as the observation becomes twofold—an explanation as well as a showdown with a gengar.[break][break]

She supposes she’s not really of the standing to question his methods or choices, though it’s just curiosity that fuels her responses. “I see..” Had her old handler’s circuit been working with Rocket then, under the radar?[break][break]

Blue almost asks it— did you- do you know Lucius Cardello? but she bites her tongue before she can. It feels too exposing. Too vulnerable. He doesn’t hold swaying power over her anymore, so it does not matter.[break][break]

“That makes sense. It’s a smart maneuver.” Almost like fighting in the ring itself, a stealthy knockout punch.

She doesn’t expect her first task to come though so soon. She hasn’t tenured a resignation (or been fired,) from the Fortree PD yet. Maybe it’s a test, of sorts?[break][break]

She meets THEO BECKETT in the rolling fog, adrenaline already prickling under her skin.[break][break]

Well, yeah, she read the file. Of course she read the file, so it earns him a nod. But when he speaks again, Blue frowns. It’s not like the file provided much detail, beyond who the athlete is and why they’re important.[break][break]

“What exactly am I beginning?” she asks flatly, before tacking on a hasty, “sir?” to the end of her question.[break][break]

Is it…a simple hunt? Bloodsport? She doesn’t know.

“Okay,” she agrees simply. “Will I moved somewhere specific?” Admittedly, she’s not a huge fan of Fortree. Though the additional bit makes a kick of disappointment hit her. She’d been hoping that bit of information hadn’t quite reached the top yet.[break][break]

She does not always use non-verbal commands with her Pokémon, but these two are specifically trained for it, as are another pair of poochyena. The latter for assisting her at the police department she’s been tasked with laying low in. These two, as backup, but she loves them just the same. The only other Pokémon trainer the same is her lucario, but she often talks to Fang as if he’s another person, and not just a Pokémon that often brawls alongside her.[break][break]

Somehow, she provokes a laugh from him, and her head quirks to the side. She didn’t find her question particularly funny, but it has amused him nonetheless. “I suppose I don’t, but I wasn’t aware this circuit had Rocket affiliates.”[break][break]

It’s not accusatory, just observation.[break][break]

The haze that slips around them makes her nose wrinkle in distaste, but as Mars deals with the koffing, it gives cover for an Arbok to slither through, thinking it will be undetected.[break][break]

With a click of her tongue, her houndour CRUNCHES down on the end of its tail and yanks it back toward them like it’s a toy.

“Huh?? I’m not making her up!” Blue cried, immediately more indignant and dramatic than need be, heightened by the flustered feeling already brewing. “She was just here with me and had to go meet up with someone else…” An explanation that sooo didn’t help her case, but it was the truth![break][break]

Blue frowned, unable to quell the stupid heat that brightened her face, her mind fixated on how he’d reached out and poked her hairbun without her instinctively flinching away, even if it wasn’t direct contact. “Well…no, you don’t. But…” she huffed, rose eyes darting away as she pouted. “Impossible not to think that,” she echoed quietly, mostly to herself. Really? Her? Coming from Shinra of all people, which meant he…thought that about her? To an extent.[break][break]

The chemical reaction that caused inside her was confusing. Like she was suddenly hyper-fixated on each and every thing he said next, like the slow lift on a roller coaster before the sudden, gut-twisting drop. Blue had never been on one, but that’s what she expected it felt like.[break][break]

Even more strange—why was she so hopeful for more?[break][break]

“What? No, I don’t- I’ve never…” she stared hard at him, trying to reel back in the embarrassment and the floundering that he was so good at pulling out of her. “No date. You’re not interrupting.” She grumbled wordlessly then into her glass, trying to drink faster so maybe she’d black this mortification out her brain.[break][break]

“Well, like I said, it was a suggestion. Not because I’m merry or some dumb shit like that,” her eyes cut away, unable to look at him evenly just then, “feel kind of weird for it, actually. Add it to your little psych notebook.” Her bottom lip puffed, and she knew she was being petulant in her embarrassment, but Blue didn’t care.[break][break]

“Holidays are just an excuse to be fake,” she added after a beat. It wasn’t wholly true, maybe. Should her New Year’s resolution be to improve her negativistic thinking? It seemed like an impossible task.
A futile effort.[break][break]

His words cut through her line of thinking and her gaze snapped back to him, mouth agape for a moment. “Are…are you still chatting me up?” She looked away again, before he could catch the full effect of a fleeting smile, small and bashful, tugging at her lips. “No, don’t disagree…guess I could have run into…worse.”

“Oh. I see, that’s okay.” People who want to get in her head, he means. She doesn’t want people there. No thank you. She’s content to shut herself away.[break][break]

It’s a good measure, though. It shows the care for those in the organization, and a show of good camaraderie. But maybe that’s all it is too— a show. A means to glean information for ulterior motives. She’s not so trusting in confidentiality. Never has been.[break][break]

She resonates with the gremlin nature of the sableye that crawls out, and Fang pummels it with an unnecessarily powerful meteor mash before she contains it in a pokeball.[break][break]

“That fast? Why?” she asks, frowning as she looks over at him. “Shouldn’t I have time to consider?” Though, what does she really have to lose? “Will I still be doing this as a front?” She tugs at her officer uniform in reference.

Blue isn’t sure— she’s never done this before, really. Apart from that one spontaneous night out with @antoinette after a round of brawling. This is different, though. This is a planned hangout. And she doesn’t really do those—probably because apart from CALLISTA MOON, she’s never really had friends. Before or after their shared childhood. (Can Shinra Moro be called a friend? She’s not sure yet. But there’s a few different question marks that hang over his name in her mind and she’s too sober to start poking at those.)[break][break]

So flustered at the mere concept of looking nice and going out on New Years Eve for drinks, Blue had suggested the first place to
come to mind— Howling at the Moon.[break][break]

It’s a personal favorite and an immediate go to when she needs a drink after a rough fight. But why on earth did she suggest the place for lowkey Rocket dealings to a cop? Even more so when she is supposed to be playing cop. So now she’s both hot under the collar because of that, and because of how strange she feels to be dressed nicely for once, with her hair done. It was a feat just to brush it properly.[break][break]

She avoids the suggested sazerac for now, and sticks to a pale ale, looking across the table at her old friend where they’ve managed to find a seat in the crowded bar. “What do you talk about on these sorts of things?” It’s an honest question.
