Eventually, the stream wound away in a different direction than the path. The woods opened up to fields and rolling hills—picturesque, but offering little in the way of shade. Yumi was inwardly grateful for her parasol as she and Tenteki meandered up a hillside.[break][break]

Suddenly, a Pikachu hopped across their path, startled by the sight of the trainer and her Pokémon. His fur was darker than normal, a more golden hue than the pale yellow of other Pikachu.[break][break]

Yumi's eyes widened. "Tenteki, you know what to do," she said.[break][break]

Her Phione chirped and launched another SUPERSONIC at the wild Pokémon. As soon as she saw the confusion on the Pikachu's face, Yumi threw a Warden Safari Ball.

Yumi stood in the center of the campsite she and DANNY HALL had chosen, directing her Bewear as the Pokémon unpacked their equipment. Under her supervision, Koguma had pitched two tents and was now setting up the kitchen area.[break][break]

When she was satisfied with the arrangement, Yumi reached into her bag and pulled out some provisions they had brought. A few were ready-to-eat meal kits (just heat them up!), but some items were raw ingredients like the strange-looking Sand Radish.[break][break]

"Do you know how to cook, Danny?" the woman asked her companion. "Because I don't."[break][break]

Farther down the stream, where it widened and deepened, Yumi caught sight of one of the ugliest Pokémon she had ever seen: a purple Feebas. She almost walked right by the fish before remembering its species evolved into one of the most beautiful Pokémon, Milotic.[break][break]

"Go on, use SUPERSONIC on that one, too," she said to her Phione.[break][break]

Tenteki flew over to the Feebas and blasted it with jarring sound waves. The wild Pokémon flopped around, confused. Yumi tossed a Warden Safari Ball to capture it.[break][break]

"Bring that back with you, Tenteki," she requested from the safety of the bank.

Yumi's eyes widened at Fern's confirmation. Of all the news they could have shared with her, this one was most expected. A mixture of pride and envy flashed through her, but she was sober enough to hide it behind a courteous smile as she moved to Fern's side of their picnic table.[break][break]

"It's a pleasure to meet you," she told Tapu Koko. "I'm Yumi, Fern's friend."[break][break]

She turned back to Fern, her smile taking on an edge of controversy.[break][break]

The path led to a babbling stream, wide enough that Yumi could not cross by foot, but narrow and shallow enough that she could easily see the bottom of the creek. A single Mudkip with unique coloration splashed in the center, enjoying a moment of relaxation.[break][break]

Tenteki drew near to play with the Mudkip, summoning an AQUA RING. Yumi watched the two Pokémon, a feeling of contentment washing over her. The sun was bright, the day was warm, the forest provided cool shade, and two Water Pokémon were enjoying each other's company. What more could a woman ask for?[break][break]

Unfortunately, they couldn't linger. Yumi called for her Phione, who returned to her side after waving goodbye to the Mudkip. Then they were off, continuing down the path.

She knew how casual she must have sounded, speaking of war and apocalypses with such an understatement. But she had not witnessed them herself firsthand, nor suffered as the others had in the dream of Galar.[break][break]

"I've made a number of friends and business connections since arriving, too."[break][break]

Yumi paused then, realizing a busy man such as THEO BECKETT might not have full awareness of her story. "I assume you already heard a thing or two from my family as to why I'm here at all."[break][break]

Or perhaps not. Just because her family worked with Team Rocket did not mean an underboss of the crime syndicate all the way in Hoenn knew about her exile.

Yumi picked up the Warden Safari Ball and tucked it into her purse. "Excellent job," she said to Tenteki, who spun in place as if dancing with delight.[break][break]

The woman laughed at the endearing display, then beckoned for the Pokémon to follow her. Continuing their leisurely pace, they strolled down a bend in the shaded path before coming upon a small clearing.[break][break]

A group of Torchic pecked at the ground, searching for food. As Tenteki drew near, they looked up in alarm before fleeing. One of them gleamed in the light, her feathers brighter than usual.[break][break]

Disappointed that the Torchic didn't want to play, Tenteki returned to Yumi's side as the woman continued through the clearing.

Before long, a shiny Treecko hopped down to one of the lower branches of the trees nearby. Yumi studied it for a moment, and it watched her in turn.[break][break]

Then she nodded to Tenteki. "SUPERSONIC," she ordered.[break][break]

The Phione emitted a blast of sound waves at the Treecko. It winced and wobbled, then fell from its perch to the ground, dazed. Yumi took the chance to throw a Warden Safari Ball.

Despite living in Hoenn for over a year, Yumi had not set foot at the Safari Zone until that afternoon. Dressed in comfortable but fashionable walking attire, she applied generous sunscreen before her arrival and, after paying for her warden ticket, opened a parasol to block the sun's rays.[break][break]

The Pokémon she chose to accompany her was her latest acquisition, who had come to her at Lilycove Beach after she'd watched the fireworks with nikkari hect. The Phione had been frightened by the loud explosions, and Yumi, feeling sorry for it and admiring its cuteness, had brought it home.[break][break]

Thankfully, Tenteki seemed much more spirited that day at the Safari Zone. The small Pokémon flew in circles around Yumi, excited by the new sights and smells of its surroundings.[break][break]

"All right, all right," she said with a laugh as it started down the trail without her. "Slow down! We're here for a pleasant walk. You can take your time looking at everything."[break][break]

Tenteki trilled happily and fell back to her side.

Yumi shook her head. The sentiment was one she reminded herself of daily. "No, definitely not."[break][break]

She picked at an imaginary speck of dust on her dress. "Diplomacy is my preference, too. I was raised—trained, really—to have skill in negotiations. And I studied communications and marketing at university."[break][break]

Without warning, a sharp whistle filled the air as the first firework rocketed into the heavens. It reached its peak and exploded, lighting up the night sky with a pyrotechnic blossom of color and light. Another followed it, then another.[break][break]

Yumi uttered a soft 'oooh', a wide smile on her lips as she beheld the display.
