As it turned out, the stranger had a vile personality to boot. Yumi rolled her eyes, unfazed by the vitriol thrown her way. She was above such small-time pettiness.[break][break]

"Let's go, Shinpi," she said to her shiny Eevee, turning to leave. "We don't need to spend any more time in this bitch's presence. I'll get you better treats than whatever she fed you."[break][break]

The Eevee mewed, wagging her tail, and started after her mistress.

Yumi tilted her head at Danny, trying to imagine this man—who she did not know too well—madly in love with someone else. She wondered, too, what this girl had been like.[break][break]

Quietly, she noted his use of the past tense.[break][break]

"What was her name?" Yumi asked, idly, in between mouthfuls of dinner. "What happened to her?"[break][break]

There were only a few options, made slightly more varied by virtue of being members of Team Rocket. Death was one, defection another.[break][break]

The squawking grew louder. Frowning, Yumi opened the Pokéball containing her Scream Tail and ordered it to investigate. It waddled off into the darkness.[break][break]

She shook her head at Danny's question. "I can't say I have. I've had crushes, sure. I almost had one on my bodyguard when we were kids, actually."[break][break]

Yumi laughed, the sound underscored with a certain fondness.[break][break]

"But love like what you felt? I don't think it's for me. I don't think I'm meant to have it." She said this without a hint of sadness in her voice, but she turned her face away from Danny anyway, not trusting her eyes to betray her.[break][break]

Yumi arched an eyebrow when the other woman did not answer. She did not stand out at all, and Yumi didn't recognize her from Team Rocket's member database, either.[break][break]

The guilt in the stranger's face suggested some earlier ill intent, however, and suspicion rose in Yumi the longer the silence went on.[break][break]

"Well? Are you going to say anything, or are you just going to gawk? Staring is rude, you know."[break][break]

thread summary:
Yumi and her cousin, , check out the Magnificient Funtasia together. Despite the antagonism that exists between them, fueled by the rivalry instilled in them since childhood, they enjoy the park's rides and attractions. Sen tries to talk about his conflicting feelings for Yumi, and she challenges him to break free from the chains placed on them by their parents.
why is it important?:
Yumi is a complicated character who tries to exude an aura of security, confidence, and fearlessness. But she is a very emotional person, caught between the love she had for her family—a love that lingers despite the ways they have hurt her—and her long-lasting grudges and pettiness.

Sen embodies this point of conflict. As someone who always lived in Yumi's shadow, he exulted when she was knocked low and kicked out of their family's estate. But then he too found himself hitting rock bottom, and with nowhere else to turn, he sought her out.

Yumi's treatment of Sen is an external representation of her internal, warring state. She insults him while spending time with him, then tries to persuade him to see from her perspective, only to give up and grow distant when he doesn't answer the way she wants.

In a way, she is just as emotionally manipulative and hypocritical as the rest of her family. And this is all learned behavior, chains she herself struggles to recognize, let alone break, let alone ask someone else—a victim like herself—to break. But this is just the start of Yumi and Sen's story, and I look forward to seeing where it goes.

Yumi watched Sen's face, trying to ascertain what he was thinking as he mumbled his responses around mouthfuls of carnival snacks. Though his words agreed with hers, she heard the reluctance in his tone.[break][break]

In the end, a single conversation was not enough to break free from the lessons ingrained into them since birth. Even she, who had been headstrong to start, struggled at times to escape the shadow of her family. Their expectation for perfection.[break][break]

And in some ways, she still wore chains she did not know existed.[break][break]

But Yumi's arrogance made her blind, and that blindness made her narrow. She exhaled loudly at Sen's answer, then turned away, looking for something else to entertain her.[break][break]

"I said what I wanted to say. Now, since we're here, let's go watch that show while we finish eating."[break][break]

Without waiting, she grabbed his wrist and dragged him to a nearby stage, where a crowd had gathered in front of a clown and his Mr. Mime.[break][break]

She watched the performance and stuffed her face with the soft pretzel until there was none left, until she was laughing with the rest of her audience, and with Sen, too.[break][break]

And for the rest of the night, she forced herself to forget the home she'd never be able to return to, and the child who had lived there.

Electricity-based powers made sense, considering the legends surrounding Tapu Koko's typing and abilities. "I want to see!" Yumi exclaimed, excitement stealing into her expression as she grinned at Fern.[break][break]

And then she paused, her dark eyes flickering to the pool. Her friend dangled one leg carelessly over the cement edge of it, their foot submerged in the clear, blue water.[break][break]

"After the picnic," Yumi decided, scooting back to her side of the table. "When we're all dry and a safe distance from any water."[break][break]

She uncorked a bottle of champagne, then poured it into three glasses: one for her, one for Fern, and one for Tapu Koko.[break][break]

"Come and eat with us!" she said to the Legendary Pokémon, gesturing with a hand while stretching out the glass intended for her newest guest. "We have plenty of food."

Yumi's chest swelled with pride at the compliment. She wasn't that great of a cook, not really, but she had learned a little from the past year living with . Yumi could make basic meals, enough for her own survival, and heat up meal kits.[break][break]

"A girl?" she echoed, her eyebrows rising into her forehead with surprise. Then her smile turned into an amused smirk, and she scooted closer to Danny, as if a co-conspirator to a secret.[break][break]

"Were you in love with her? Or was she your sister or something?" had joined Team Rocket's Hoenn branch because of Yumi, but she was neither of those things to him.[break][break]

A sudden squawking filled the air, cutting through the peaceful evening like a knife.

The promise of food overrode the gluttonous Eevee's survival instinct. She padded over to the stranger and took a tentative bite of the snack.[break][break]

As soon as she chomped down on it, she started to dart backward, intending to eat with the safety of some distance from the girl.[break][break]

"There you are!" Yumi exclaimed when she saw Shinpi. Her eyes fell upon the stranger then, narrowing at the unfamiliar face. "And what do you think you're doing?"[break][break]

It was entirely possible the girl was friendly, but suspicion of others' motivations had been beaten into Yumi since she was a child.

Yumi rounded a corner, expecting to see her Pokémon just a few feet away but finding nothing but an empty, cavernous corridor of stone. Anxiety started to rise within her as she swept her dark gaze around the area, seeking answers the tunnel would not give her.[break][break]

"Shinpi? Shinpi!" she called out, her pace quickening as she continued down the dark space. "Where did you go?"[break][break]

Finally, she turned another corner and saw her Eevee. The Pokémon's ears were perked up as she regarded the stranger kneeling a short distance away.[break][break]

Unfamiliarity bred caution; Shinpi tilted her head at the woman but did not approach.

Rusturf Tunnel was the quickest route between Verdanturf Town and Rustboro City, but that did not make it a particularly enjoyable experience for Yumi. Inside, the tunnel was dark and dirty, with wild Pokémon likely to attack at any time.[break][break]

Still, she had places to be and people to see. Her shiny Eevee was helping her navigate the route, too. The small Pokémon scouted ahead, using DETECT to ensure the coast was clear for her new mistress.[break][break]

"Don't wander too far off, Shinpi," Yumi called out to the Pokémon. "I can't follow you if I can't see you."

A gaggle of children ran by them, laughing and screaming about some carnival ride. Remembering they were in public, she lowered her arms to her sides.[break][break]

A shiver ran through Yumi at the caress of the cool breeze. She hadn't brought a sweater, not thinking she would need one. But she didn't comment on it, instead smiling at Nikkari's offer.[break][break]

"I'd love that," she said, standing.[break][break]

Itazura, immune to the noise of fireworks, remained out of his Pokéball. He stood to the side, ever vigilant, as Yumi helped her companion shake out and fold up the blanket. She let Nikkari hold onto it.[break][break]

"Thank you for the company today," she said as she led the way to her hotel. Though she walked at an unhurried pace, she did wrap her arms around herself, trying to ward off the chill without complaint. "I had a lot of fun."

"That's not really an answer, you know," Yumi said, frowning at Danny as he hunched over the dirt. She didn't know how skilled he was at gardening. From where she sat, he could either be a genius or totally inept.[break][break]

Still, Yumi set to work chopping up the Sand Radish as he recommended. At least she could use a knife and heat up the meal kits on the portable gas stove they'd brought.[break][break]

The sky darkened as the sun set. A breeze brought a chill to the camp, and Yumi swapped out her Bewear for her Braixen to start a fire for warmth.[break][break]

"Dinner's ready," she said as she portioned out the meal into two camping bowls, adding equal amounts of radish to both of them. "Get it while it's hot."[break][break]

The first bite was surprisingly delicious and warming. She eagerly tucked in, savoring the spicy-sweet flavor of the meat and vegetables covered in sauce.[break][break]

"So, have you been working for Team Rocket long?" Yumi asked her companion, seeking to drive back any uncomfortable silence with conversation.[break][break]

As Yumi picked up the Warden Safari Ball now containing the Pikachu, a rustle in the tall grass caught her attention. A pale Eevee stepped out, uttering a soft mew of curiosity.[break][break]

Before Yumi could command her Phione, Tenteki swooped toward the wild Pokémon and used SUPERSONIC again. Clearly, it understood its role during their walk and no longer needed orders.[break][break]

A pleased smile spread across Yumi's face. What a successful outing! So many Pokémon obtained, and all of them rare.[break][break]

She threw her final Warden Safari Ball at the confused Eevee.
