Yumi quickly picked a bright yellow car and climbed into it. She singled Sen out among the crowd of riders and aimed straight for him as soon as they were free to drive around. A little kid rammed into her cousin before she could reach him, however, prompting her to laugh uncontrollably.[break][break]

"Did you really let that kid get in your way?" she cried out as she raced past Sen.[break][break]

Turning her vehicle around, Yumi aimed for Sen again, finally crashing into his car's backside. Unable to help herself, she kept giggling, her expression full of sheer delight as she played like a child.[break][break]

When the time was up, Yumi stepped out of her car, beaming. There hadn't been a decisive winner — bumper cars didn't really work that way — but she felt confident she'd hit Sen more times than he'd hit her.[break][break]

"Oh Arceus, that was fun," she said. For a moment, she forgot the tension between them and slipped her arm through his. "I'm hungry though. Should we get food and walk around a bit?"

Yumi's eyes widened at Fern's first of two reveals. "I'd read the reports, but it's so hard to believe. I only believe it because of Hitoshi. He doesn't lie to me," she said. "You and Admin Cross were actually married?"[break][break]

But it was obvious they weren't in the present timeline. Yumi's expression changed then, adopting a note of offense.[break][break]

"I can't believe I missed your wedding!" She shot Fern a sharp look, though her tipsiness softened its edge. "You better invite me to this next one! Your real one!"[break][break]

The darkening sky and her friend's sudden exclamation diverted her attention away from her lamentation. She gasped, eyes even wider, as a Pokémon descended upon their pool party. Never before had she seen anything like it, but the name…[break][break]

"Tapu Koko? Isn't that a Legendary Pokémon?" she exclaimed, incredulous gaze darting to Fern. Then understanding dawned on her. "Wait—Fern? Are you an Avatar?!"

Understanding dawned on Yumi's face when Enzo revealed that his goddaughter's father had been at the casino's grand reopening. She tried to picture the face of the man in her mind's eye, but their encounter had been so brief, she barely recalled the details.[break][break]

A small Fuecoco emerged from the tall grass nearby. Yumi nodded at her Popplio, who unleashed another SING to lull it to sleep. Once she was sure the Fire Croc Pokémon was unconscious, she tossed a Pokéball.[break][break]

Yumi turned over Enzo's words in her mind. She understood his feelings of hurt and vindictiveness; they had fueled her for the past year. But the pain lessened as time marched on, and as she began to flourish.[break][break]

She shrugged. For the first time around Enzo, she struggled to put words to her thoughts.[break][break]

"I don't know," she admitted. "A part of me wants to hate my family forever, but my cousin's here in Hoenn now. When I met him, I wanted to hate him. And I did, a little. But I also thought…"[break][break]

She paused, trying to pinpoint her true emotions.[break][break]

"I thought, 'It doesn't have to be this way between us.'"

Yumi's gaze rose to contemplate the brightly illuminated Ferris wheel. "Sounds perfect. Let's go."[break][break]

The ride had been set up on the other end of the park, so they had to trudge through thick crowds of people to reach it. On the way, upbeat music drew Yumi's attention; slowing down briefly, she glanced to the side to glimpse a performance on a stage.[break][break]

Several carnies had dressed up like Pokémon and were in the middle of a song-and-dance routine. Gathered at the front of the stage were several small children and their parents.[break][break]

But then the crowd swept her away, and she lost sight of the stage.[break][break]

The line was short at the Ferris wheel. In no time at all, the carny manning the large machine ushered Yumi and Hitoshi into a carriage. She took her seat, placing the Pikachu plushie on her lap and wrapping her arms around it to keep it steady.[break][break]

"This is fun," she said to her bodyguard, a smile on her lips. "It's been a long time since we've had a day like this, just for relaxing and having fun. It makes me miss being a kid. I felt like I had all the free time in the world, back then."

Yumi sat up a little straighter when Fern teased her with a secret, though with the alcohol in her bloodstream, she overshot and leaned hard against the table set up for their poolside picnic. Suimei yipped in surprise, wriggling in her arms.[break][break]

"Of course I do!" Yumi exclaimed, eyes gleaming over a curved grin. "Is it about work or something personal? Oh—wait, don't tell me. Did Jayden propose?"[break][break]

Not that she could see the stony-faced jayden cross doing such a thing, but she didn't know the man. According to Fern, he had a private soft side.[break][break]

An electric current coursed through the air, slight but noticeable in the way the hair on Yumi's arms started to stand on end.

"I like all sorts of ice cream. Soft serve with sprinkles is best for a beachy summer evening, though," Yumi said as she fished in her tote bag for her wallet.[break][break]

However, Nikkari was quicker, and her eyes widened slightly when she saw he'd already taken his out. The surprise transformed at once into a smile of delight.[break][break]

"You're too kind. Chocolate with the rainbow sprinkles, please."[break][break]

She received the enormous cone with both hands, exchanging it for a 'thank you' to both the cashier and Nikkari himself. Before stepping away, she grabbed several paper napkins from the counter, knowing they'd need them sooner rather than later.[break][break]

The first burst of cold sweetness was full of deliciousness and nostalgia. Yumi was a woman who appreciated finery, but soft serve with sprinkles reminded her of childhood and home.[break][break]

And eating it wouldn't be complete without ice cream dangerously close to dripping down her chin. She dabbed at it with as much elegance as one could possibly muster.[break][break]

"The fireworks are starting soon," Yumi said to Nikkari as she contemplated the next angle of attack on her cone. "Should we find a place to sit and watch?"

Yumi nodded with the graciousness of a sage as Mei accepted her wisdom. She sat opposite her friend in the Ferris wheel's carriage, her hands folded in her lap, the picture of feminine elegance.[break][break]

A laugh spilled from her lips at the very notion of being swept off her feet by another person.[break][break]

"I doubt that will happen," Yumi said. "Handsome men are either poor or egoistic, and the kind ones are not ambitious enough or ugly. If I entertain any kind of partner, our relationship will be business first—whatever they can offer me, and whatever I can offer them."[break][break]

Her own family dynamics had crushed the notion of romance as necessary for a lasting partnership in her head. She thought, perhaps, that her parents loved each other, but she never saw them give each other affection.[break][break]

Only duty and loyalty.[break][break]

The Ferris wheel brought them higher into the sky. Yumi leaned toward one window of their carriage, gazing out at the cityscape sprawling outward before them and at the black ocean beyond it.[break][break]

"You know about the casino, of course," she said when Mei shifted the topic of conversation. "That's how I spend most of my time these days. But I'm making a few friends here and there, too."[break][break]

Whatever jealousy Jayden felt over Yumi's time spent with his partner was unknown to her. She continued to smile politely, more interested in not offending a member of their organization's upper brass.[break][break]

"I am, though if you like, I could accompany you," she said. "Is this your first visit to the Magnificent Funtasia? Interested in any game or ride in particular?"[break][break]

If Jayden wished for her company, she decided she'd let him choose their entertainment for the day, whether it was Dugtrio Ring Toss, bumper cars, or something else.[break][break]

All the attractions were the same, whether the carnival showed up in Dewford or elsewhere in the region. She had no preference toward one or another.

Hitoshi's Kartana emerged from its Pokéball while Yumi had her back turned, busy with releasing the Magikarp back into the pool. She was contemplating her prize when she heard her bodyguard's growling retort.[break][break]

Alarm ran through her, knowing that if she did not intervene now, someone might get hurt.[break][break]

Whirling around, Yumi sized up the carny. "I'm sorry, is there a problem here?" she asked, her voice as sharp as a knife's edge.[break][break]

"Of course not, ma'am, it's just—"[break][break]

"Then I don't think there's any need to bring attention to us, especially since we've paid you money to play your games."[break][break]

She picked a random prize from the wall, a plush toy of a Pikachu, and pointed.[break][break]

"Now I need you to do your job and get that for me, which I won fairly."[break][break]

The carny looked ready to argue, then visibly deflated as he sighed. He took the plush toy off the wall and handed it to Yumi without a word. She turned on her heel and stalked off.[break][break]

"What would you like to do next, Hitoshi?" she asked when they were far enough away from the Magikarp fishing game.

Nikkari's casual mention of his residence in Lilycove was of little significance to Yumi. After all, her interest in his business extended only to how he could further patron her own. Nevertheless, she tucked the information into a mental file, just in case.[break][break]

Itazura eyed the Vulpix briefly before taking in Nikkari's scent. Satisfied, the Liepard rubbed his cheek against the man's hand, purring loudly.[break][break]

Yumi smiled seeing her cat's reaction, then raised her eyes to Nikkari's face. "I'll take you up on that dinner date for another night. I ate dinner already today, but I wouldn't say 'no' to getting drinks, or maybe a sweet treat. Do you like ice cream?"[break][break]

She had spotted a frozen custard shop a block back, the kind that sold huge cones of it with sprinkles.

Yumi had not anticipated attending the Magnificent Funtasia for a second day in a row, but Dewford Town was so small there was little else to do except enjoy the beach.[break][break]

So she found herself walking through the main thoroughfare of the carnival again, recalling the previous night there with THEO BECKETT, when the call of her name drew her from her thoughts.[break][break]

Turning, she looked for the owner of the voice until her eyes settled on jayden cross. He was looking directly at her.[break][break]

Fern's partner, she remembered, and an admin of Team Rocket.[break][break]

Yumi approached him with a raised eyebrow and a slight smile on her lips. "Good afternoon," she greeted him, unsure if he had a civilian name. "I don't think we've formally met."[break][break]

She held out her hand for a shake.

Yumi's eyes widened at the vehemence of Mei's denial. "Wow, okay. Not a client. Noted," she said with a slight laugh.[break][break]

Looping arms together again, she led her friend down the main thoroughfare of the carnival. On both sides, stalls featuring games attracted children and adults alike with bright lights and loud music. A crowd had gathered around a Tauros Rodeo ride that seemed more dangerous than fun.[break][break]

Beyond them, Yumi caught sight of various rides and attractions. But the one that drew her interest the most was the beautifully lit Ferris wheel.[break][break]

Subtly, she began walking Mei toward the ride while she considered her friend's questions.[break][break]

"I don't think I've really liked someone in a long time," Yumi admitted. "I dated guys at university, and I sometimes have one-night stands, but I'm not seeking a relationship right now."[break][break]

She thought of parker jones and Callan Young.[break][break]

"But if I were and if I liked someone, I'd tell them in a clear and straightforward way, so that they can't misunderstand me."

Yumi actually laughed when she resurfaced and saw that the object in her hands was none other than a real, living Clamperl. She tapped a Pokéball against the shell so she could claim it for her collection, then placed it carefully among her belongings.[break][break]

A second Technical Machine was welcome among the pile of treasures quickly building back on the beach. Yumi set it down carefully, already thinking of how to use it.[break][break]

After a short break, she returned to the surf and her Sharpedo's side. They waded out into deeper waters, then dove again to pick out something else from the ocean's floor.[break][break]
