Yumi dropped the camera into the other woman's hands. "Here you go, then," she said, not bothering to disguise the aloof disdain in her voice. "Don't get it lost on the way back."[break][break]

Turning to her Pokémon, she recalled them into their Pokéballs, then started to walk away.

Yumi's expression of skepticism conveyed her thoughts more openly than any spoken words. She considered the woman seated in front of her and the Croconaw floating in the water.[break][break]

"We'll go together," she decided at length, cradling the camera to her chest. "Kyoufu, bring us to shore."[break][break]

At first, nothing happened. Then a surge of water lifted Yumi, the other woman, and their Pokémon toward the beach, summoned by the half-submerged Sharpedo. The full form of the menacing shark only appeared once he beached onto the sand, startling children and adults alike.[break][break]

Yumi slid off her Pokémon's back with nonchalant grace. "Where are the owners of this camera?" she asked the brunette as she scanned the beach with her dark gaze.

Unfortunately for Yumi, Kiba's nose was not going to help her navigate the House of Mirrors. In order for the dog to follow a scent, he needed to familiarize himself with a specific scent. But in that carnival attraction, there were simply too many, all slathered on top of each other. The Stoutland barked mournfully at Yumi, unable to help.[break][break]

With a sigh, the woman gave the maze her best shot. But even with her cleverness and keen observation, she took several wrong turns before finally making it out of the building. Sen was already there, waiting.[break][break]

Yumi scoffed. "Fine, you win."[break][break]

She didn't link arms with him again. Instead, she strode off toward the next attraction, trying to find something else that could secure her an easy victory. Finally, her gaze settled upon a large sign with a small queue beneath it.[break][break]

"Let's ride the bumper cars," she suggested to Sen, pointing at the nearby ride.

Yumi contemplated the various souvenirs for sale at the Joyland pop-up booth. None of them appealed to her sense of aesthetic, but at least they seemed well-made, between the fine quality of the materials and the brightness of the colors.[break][break]

She thought about buying one, but the sense of someone approaching prompted her to glance over her shoulder instead. Her expression brightened at once, recognition entering her eyes.[break][break]

"Oh! There you are," she said as her lips twisted into her trademark amused smirk.[break][break]

THEO BECKETT might remember it, though the last time they had seen each other was when Yumi was much younger. As a representative of Team Rocket, he'd visited the Hasegawa estate a few times to conduct business with her grandfather.[break][break]

But they had never spoken at length, not even during the first year of her stay in Hoenn. Perhaps he was simply too busy with the demands and responsibilities of an underboss. So when he'd reached out to reconnect at the carnival, she'd been very surprised indeed.[break][break]

None of it showed on Yumi's face at that moment, however. She stepped away from the souvenir booth to greet him properly, extending a hand for him to shake. "It's been a long time, Mr. Beckett. How have you been?"

Unlike Mei, who had gone exploring with her friends, Yumi had traveled with Rocket upper brass.[break][break]

A cotton candy booth caught the Johtonian's attention. She steered her companion toward it and purchased a large stick of the confection.[break][break]

"Dating someone?" Yumi echoed, unlinking arms with Mei so she could tear off a chunk of cotton candy.[break][break]

For some reason, she couldn't imagine the beautiful escort dating the types of men and women who frequented her place of business. "A client?" she asked anyway.[break][break]

While the cotton candy melted on her tongue, Yumi offered the stick to Mei, silently communicating that she could eat some, too.

The other woman was barely making any progress through the water. Yumi noticed the Croconaw nearby and paused, confused. If the woman had a Water-type Pokémon, she simply should have held onto it and asked it to guide her through the water. Did she not know how to swim?[break][break]

"Kyoufu, swim over, please," Yumi said to her Sharpedo. The shark obliged, traversing through the water with predatory ease. Suimei the Popplio swam ahead, yipping and sniffing with curiosity at the unfamiliar Croconaw.[break][break]

Once Kyoufu drew alongside the other woman's surfboard, Yumi held out the camera but did not hand it over yet. She raised an eyebrow at the board.[break][break]

"I'd give this to you, but something tells me you'd just drop it again with how you're using that thing."

Nikkari's familiar voice abruptly brought Yumi out of her private musings. She looked up with a start before an amused smile spread across her face. Her Liepard, on the other hand, stepped toward the man for a tentative sniff.[break][break]

"Mr. Hect, what a pleasant surprise," she said, meaning it. Rarely did she encounter casino patrons or business partners in casual settings; she likened it to crossing paths with a professor outside of the classroom.[break][break]

But Nikkari, at least, was one whose company she'd enjoyed so much, she didn't mind this chance meeting.[break][break]

"Not exactly. I did take the day off but spent my time in the shopping district." She'd already dropped off her bags at her hotel room, a swanky five-star establishment right on the beachfront. "It's relaxing for me after working so hard."[break][break]

Was Yumi materialistic? Yes. Did she care if people judged her for it? Absolutely not.[break][break]

"Are you here for the festival?" she asked Nikkari in turn. Since he asked her about it, surely that was his reason.

The girl gasped with surprise at the sudden catch, then laughed with delight. "I got one!" she exclaimed, beaming, chest puffing with pride. Immediately, she showed it off to the other children nearby.[break][break]

Yumi chuckled softly. She saw the way Hitoshi guided the Magikarp into the child's net to help her out. Pointing it out would deflate the girl's sense of accomplishment, so she said to the kid, "You did a great job!"[break][break]

Turning to the pool full of fish, Yumi took her turn. She swept the net through the water with slow movements, trying not to spook any Magikarp.[break][break]

"I don't know, this is pretty tough," she said after a minute of trying and failing.[break][break]

Still, she wasn't ready to give up. A large, golden fish swam closer, oblivious to the net in her hand. Carefully, Yumi angled the net behind it, then quickly scooped it up with a turn of her wrist. Alarmed at her own success, she stood, holding the net's handle with both hands.[break][break]

He always exuded an "uncle" vibe, and now she had a better understanding of why. Being the godfather of a young girl would do that to a man.[break][break]

"I'll visit more often," Yumi promised after a moment. Her smile widened. "I want to meet them."[break][break]

At the mention of a falling out, however, she grew pensive once more. The recent arrival of her cousin Sen Hasegawa had touched the still-tender wound her family had gouged into her last summer.[break][break]

She'd been wondering if it was possible to fix whatever existed between her and Sen — let alone between her and the rest of her family — or if the poison that seemed to dwell in all of them would just continue to drive them farther apart.[break][break]

"Did you expect to make amends with him eventually, when you first fell apart?" Yumi asked, aware of the personal nature of the question yet not caring if she overstepped. Such was her nature.

Yumi scowled at the shady man who'd approached her, ready to snap at him if need be — but of course, there was no need, not with Hitoshi around. Her dog's bark was enough to send the creep away.[break][break]

Crouching down, Yumi turned her attention to the Magikarp game. The fish were faster than she'd expected; even Hitoshi had not caught one yet.[break][break]

"Thank you," she murmured to him. No matter how many times he protected her, she never failed to express her gratitude. He knew how to do his job, and he did it well. It was more than enough to earn her praise.[break][break]

On Yumi's other side, a little girl sighed dramatically, frustrated that she hadn't caught a fish yet.

Yumi walked along Lilycove's beach, the cool water of the surf splashing around her bare feet and ankles. In one hand, she carried her sandals; in another, a woven tote purse. A cool breeze teased her long hair, worn down around her shoulders. At her side, her Liepard padded silently across the sand.[break][break]

It was rare for Yumi to be alone, but her bodyguard was away on Rocket business, and for once, she had nothing to oversee for the casino. So she had taken the day off, doing some shopping at Lilycove's famous department store before enjoying a luxurious dinner alone at her favorite Johtonian restaurant.[break][break]

And afterward, the beautiful sunset called her to walk along the beach. At the late hour, most tourists had departed the sand, allowing Yumi a measure of solitude.[break][break]

Little did she know, however, she would soon run into an unexpected, but not unpleasant, companion.

Unexpected movement along the shoreline caught Yumi's eye. A woman paddled out from the beach using a surfboard, her Croconaw at her side — which would not have been unusual save for the expression on the woman's face.[break][break]

She looked uncertain, perhaps even frightened. That was not the face a surfer typically made when heading out.[break][break]

Not only that, but she did not appear to be heading for deeper waters to catch the large waves. Her slow pace suggested a different purpose.[break][break]

"Are you looking for this?" Yumi called out to the woman, holding up the camera.
