Yumi followed Oriel to the seating area, glad for their nearness, as she had no desire to remain standing at the top of a stairwell if they were to continue their conversation. She lowered herself onto a couch with all the grace of a queen resuming her throne.[break][break]

The woman waited, patient, while Oriel studied her. She could almost see the gears turning in his mind. When he finally voiced his thoughts, her brows rose into her forehead in pleasant surprise.[break][break]

"I didn't expect mystery, but maybe I just don't know any good books in that genre," she said. "Dark stories, though… They definitely interest me."[break][break]

The Seviper smile returned, making its home on her face once more.[break][break]

That one word was all she needed to utter. She knew he would do as she bid while she approached the white-haired woman. The simulation. Despite knowing this, the woman seemed so real.[break][break]

"We can kill her next time. I want to see what happens if we join them instead," Yumi explained to Hitoshi. "We may learn something important about the enemy."

Yumi had spent many days after the operation at the Ancient Tomb contemplating Hitoshi Inoue's words. Twenty years. She did not know how the events he described could be real unless a Legendary Pokémon like Celebi had used its powers, she concluded. And if she was going to send Hitoshi into uncharted territory against them, she had to understand what they were up against.[break][break]

'They', because she and Hitoshi were a team, bound to each other in ways words could not express.[break][break]

So Yumi had reached out to Head Scientist Naomi Sato to request an exploration of the new RKS simulation. She recalled the woman from Casino Starlight's grand reopening, though her behavior hadn't matched with what Yumi had imagined of a Head Scientist. The Nomi who met her on the appointed day, however, looked every inch a professional. Yumi could appreciate that.[break][break]

What surprised her, however, was the arrival of a third party. Parker walked in with all her usual swagger, only to stop dead upon seeing Yumi's arched eyebrow. A cold satisfaction gripped the Johtonian then. She lifted her chin, haughty as ever.[break][break]

"Parker," was all she said in acknowledgement, not bothering to hide the iciness in her voice.[break][break]

The simulation felt so real that Yumi had to blink several times. Even the shade of the ruin was cool against her skin. "Fascinating," she murmured, unable to help herself. Only then did the noise begin, a jarring and unearthly sound.[break][break]

Pointedly ignoring Parker's comment, Yumi stepped toward the tunnel entrance. "In that case, Miss Sato, I'd like to see what's deeper in the cave, too," she said. "This is my first time, after all."[break][break]

Yumi's face shifted, the contortion of her features taking on a note of confusion.[break][break]

"What the fuck? What do you mean, why'd I ask you out?" she exclaimed, her voice pitching higher in bewilderment. "Are you fucking kidding me, Parker? You seriously don't know?"[break][break]

She scoffed, more affronted than she'd felt in a long time. Yumi was not a woman who made friends easily. Though she could see sleeping with Parker had encouraged a sort of puppy love, Yumi had hoped the line of friendship had not been muddled too badly.[break][break]

She'd been wrong, it seemed.[break][break]

Yumi pointed an accusing finger at Parker. "Don't follow me. I'm going home. And I don't want to see you again until you get some sense between your ears."[break][break]

Ultimatum declared, she stalked off across the street to look for Hitoshi Inoue and catch a Corviknight taxi back to her apartment.

Yumi did not see nikkari hect again until the message came to her from L'Amphitryon that a gentleman had ordered the Salon le Mesnil 1976. She had long returned from walking the floor and was engaged in a long conversation with her casino manager about upcoming changes to regulatory requirements. The option to walk away and have a luxurious dinner with a handsome man was a siren song in comparison.[break][break]

As Yumi made her way to the fifth floor, the member of staff who had waited on Nikkari murmured the total count of his winnings into her ear. Her eyebrows raised in surprise but quickly smoothed away as a smile curled her lips.[break][break]

At L'Amphitryon, she slid into the chair opposite Nikkari at his table for two.[break][break]

"I heard you had an exciting evening," Yumi said as she spread her napkin over her lap. "Did you enjoy yourself?"[break][break]

She would not hope or assume. When it came to her largest investment to date, both emotionally and financially, she wanted to hear whatever genuine critique or praise a man of his refined taste might give.

A few days later, Yumi arrived at the old house. Though she had never seen photos of @griselda's old house before, she thought it fitting for the woman she'd come to know.[break][break]

She had, of course, looked up the address on a few real estate apps before visiting. Yumi knew the low price tag was because of the unsolved double homicide in the house's history, but everything else looked fine in the photographs. Old and in need of repair, but serviceable.[break][break]

The front gate swung open with a high-pitched creak. Yumi's heels clicked against the stone path leading up to the main entrance. Her Seviper slithered at her side, silent, red eyes vigilant.[break][break]

She knocked on the door, but she doubted Griselda could hear it. The house was big enough to be considered a mansion in some circles. But Yumi did not have her friend's number in her phone; she couldn't send a text to declare her arrival.[break][break]

"Be on your best behavior, Gesshoku," she warned her Pokémon, whose only reply was the flicker of a forked tongue.

Cutting out the distributor was one thing Yumi had been adamant on. She hated middle men, and anyway, her high standards required her to work only with people she trusted. Thankfully, she trusted vincenzo de luca, who trusted his contacts. Casino Starlight would not have been nearly so well-stocked with rare vintages if it hadn't been for her mentor's vast network.[break][break]

Yumi took note of Nikkari's temperance. Many casino patrons indulged in drink while gambling, but his restraint suggested a cooler head.[break][break]

"Of course. I wish you luck in your games, Mr. Hect," she said, preparing to withdraw. She knew better than to linger overlong. "And if the cards hold you in their favor tonight, perhaps you'll allow me to join you in a toast to your success."[break][break]

Because Yumi herself had never indulged in such an exceptional yield, not even when she'd celebrated her eighteenth birthday with her family. She knew better than to spend that kind of money on herself, too.[break][break]

But if she could convince a guest to spend the money? Surely he would not refuse her a glass after she so graciously offered him the opportunity to try it.[break][break]

As she stepped away from the bar, Yumi left Nikkari with a lingering smile, her eyes sparkling with amusement.

"You did," Yumi said, pleased that he'd noticed. Her smile reflected her delight as she took in Nikkari with a greater appreciation. Most guests did not possess the wealth or knowledge to recognize when such a rare and precious option was available for them to partake.[break][break]

"We partner with select vineyards and source directly from them. Our in-house sommelier tests the samples before making any purchase."[break][break]

Her eyes flickered to the staff member waiting on Nikkari, but she addressed him with her next words.[break][break]

"Would you like a glass of it when you've finished your bordeaux?"

It was not a name familiar to Yumi. Even though Casino Starlight reopened only a month ago, she thought she knew the name of every person who could afford the VIP area. But this name was unfamiliar, a foreign shape on her tongue as she repeated it to herself.[break][break]

She strode into the private room, her dark eyes a laser sighting her target. The man of the hour sat at the bar, laptop at one hand, a glass of wine in another. His angular face was an uncharted landscape to discover and memorize.[break][break]

Yumi slowed her pace, buying some time to observe him from afar. The tailored suit fit his body well. What accessories he wore struck her as classic and muted, not the gaudy screaming of new money.[break][break]

A honeyed smile curled the woman's lips. Already, this stranger had earned points in her book. But appearances and wealth were only half the battle. Was he as intelligent and well-mannered as he looked?[break][break]

There was only one way to find out.[break][break]

The clicking of her heels announced her approach.[break][break]

"Good evening, Mr. Hect," Yumi said as she sidled up to the bar next to him. Her eyes never left his face, affording him privacy for whatever was on his laptop screen. "Welcome to Casino Starlight."[break][break]

She held out her hand with its manicured nails, dark with red polish. "I'm Yumi Hasegawa. It's a pleasure to have you as my guest tonight."

Yumi felt the tension ease from Hitoshi's body as she held him. The trembling vanished. There. He was all right again, reassured by the hand of his master.[break][break]

She smiled at his vow. Deep down, she was still unsure what this whole "twenty years gone" business and what it truly entailed, but finding out could wait. For now, she could just sit with him, like old times.[break][break]

She pulled out her phone with one hand, gesturing toward the hallway with another. Down the corridor were hers and Mei's bedrooms, as well as the bathroom they shared.[break][break]
