A slow day in all of its glory.[break][break]

Just like always, there had always been the occasional patron strewn throughout the interior of the store, claiming their respective seats and lingering to read whatever books they’d purchased or picked for perusal, alike. Compared to other days, however, the trail of activity found itself dwindling, leaving those within—staff and visitors, alike—savoring a quiet spell amidst the aromas of the specialty cafe located upon the premises, alongside the gentle melodies that accompanied the place through the speakers.[break][break]

While some of the staff tended to other parts of the storefront, a certain, ashen haired man found himself maintaining the lofts located just above the entryway. A small cart of books remained by his side as he gently ran his finger along the spines of those aligned before him, murmuring softly before finding the space between titles he’d been looking for. With a finger left to mark its place, he quickly reached towards the cart to pluck a tome from its contents before placing it where he’d initial marked.[break]break]

He’d barely been able to turn his attention to another shelf before noting the gentle chime of the front door below. With a small hum, he took a short lived stride towards the railings protecting the edge of the floor.[break][break]

”Welcome~!” had been his simple greeting, paired with a smile nothing short of welcoming as he eyed the lobby beneath him. ”If you need help, let us know~!”

A brief investigation following Casino Starlight's grand reopening party revealed to Yumi the bookstore owned by one oriel novikov. She had met him and his companion during dinner, not expecting either one to intrigue her as they had.[break][break]

Their shallow answers reminded her of the way some people in the business spoke, and she had a mind to dig more deeply — to satisfy her curiosity, if nothing else.[break][break]

The bell on the front door chimed as she entered the shop. A beautiful arrangement of books on shelves greeted her, followed shortly by the enticing aroma of coffee and the soft music from speakers. Then a man's voice hailed her. Taking a few more steps into the shop, she craned her neck for a better look at him.[break][break]

"Just the man I wanted to see," Yumi remarked, her lips twisting into a smirk. But conversing across two different floors was for people without elegance or poise. She quickly found the stairs leading up to the loft.[break][break]

"Oriel, right?" she said as she neared him, just in case she was wrong. "From Casino Starlight?"[break][break]

Of course, she expected him to remember her.

Although he’d intended to return to the shelves as swiftly as he’d called his greeting, he found himself faltering upon his feet while barely beginning to turn away. The sight came before the voice at first, but regardless, hues of a navy-touched slate remained upon the newest visitor to his establishment as she made herself known.[break][break]

”Oh, Miss Hasegawa~!” he called back, his brows raising as an intrigued toothiness had interwoven itself into the smile he’d worn. ”You’re right on the money, yes— the one and only~.”[break][break]

For only a moment’s worth of time, he watched as she walked her way along the lobby’s space, guiding herself to the steps leading up to where he stood. With the cart he’d been tending to swiftly becoming a secondary note, he embarked upon a brisk—albeit short lived—stride towards where the steps met the loft proper.[break][break]

”I’ll admit— I’m surprised you actually took the time to drop by~,” he mused, offering a hand out to her as she neared the topmost steps of the staircase. ”How’ve you and the casino been since the party?”

Yumi took the proffered hand and gave Oriel a firm handshake. "Business at the casino has been booming since the grand reopening. All of the rave reviews from the party have done wonders promoting the casino to the rest of Hoenn."[break][break]

Her Seviper smile did not waver, and her dark eyes remained locked with his.[break][break]

"It was all thanks to the patronage of our lovely guests."[break][break]

At last, she turned her attention to the bookshelves that surrounded them. Her gaze slid over the spines, reading unfamiliar titles.[break][break]

"I admit, I'm not much of a reader. At least of fiction," she added as an afterthought. "I read plenty of news and nonfiction to keep up with the goings-on of the region, the important people involved, that sort of thing."[break][break]

She raised her eyebrow at Oriel.[break][break]

"But I am curious if there is anything you could recommend to a woman like me."

”I’d imagine so, honestly,” the man chuckled, warmly returning the shake and hold before parting his hand from hers. It lifted without missing a beat, instead gesturing towards the number of unoccupied seats and couches strewn throughout the loft before he embarked upon a brisk stride towards them. ”It really was a sight to behold, and an event to enjoy— I’d be shocked if it hadn’t helped with promoting the place~...”[break][break]

Spoken so leisurely, albeit with a touch of skeptical interest all the while as hues of a faded navy met those of a bolder, deeper differentiation, laced only with the selfsame sharpness that seemed to intertwine itself between and beneath welcoming words and smiles, alike. Far be it for him to shun an interaction—especially one prompted by one so eager to go out of her way to visit on a whim—but from their initial meeting, there had been a sort of gravitas that he couldn’t help but be drawn into.[break][break]

From the way she’d gazed upon him to the smile upon her lips; the unknown spark within her eyes to the affable front that she exhibited so naturally. Whether from personal experience or otherwise, it seemed all too familiar.[break][break]

(Like a huntswoman to prey, in a way~.)

And far be it for him to allow himself to become the latter.[break][break]

So he merely continued along as prompted, and when posed with the query before him, had given her nothing short of a flash of surprise and intrigue, alike, while giving thought to her musings. A hum escaped him as he sat himself down atop one of the seats around them, leaning back with a casual comfort while propping a leg upon his knee.[break][break]

”Recommendations for you, hm…?”[break][break]

He eyed her for a while longer, placing his hands within his lap as a brief quiet enveloped him. An idle, albeit faltered smile of thought remained upon his lips before it broadened once more.[break][break]

”...I feel as though you’d enjoy a good mystery for some reason~,” he started before long, his eyes never straying from hers all the while. ”Dark romance, maybe— if not just something in darker nature, altogether~. Tales that tell more than meets the eye.”

Yumi followed Oriel to the seating area, glad for their nearness, as she had no desire to remain standing at the top of a stairwell if they were to continue their conversation. She lowered herself onto a couch with all the grace of a queen resuming her throne.[break][break]

The woman waited, patient, while Oriel studied her. She could almost see the gears turning in his mind. When he finally voiced his thoughts, her brows rose into her forehead in pleasant surprise.[break][break]

"I didn't expect mystery, but maybe I just don't know any good books in that genre," she said. "Dark stories, though… They definitely interest me."[break][break]

The Seviper smile returned, making its home on her face once more.[break][break]

"Perhaps one with a female protagonist, hmm? A past shrouded in mystery and legend, a double life and dark secrets, a dream of wanting more than she currently has. Oh, but—"[break][break]

Yumi raised a finger, as if to object with herself.[break][break]

"If it were a book with a male lead, what do you think would be most exciting?"

Whether or not his hunches were correct or otherwise had simply been things that remained to be seen, waiting to be either confirmed or rejected by the woman sitting before him. As she sat before him and spoke her part in turn with all the regality befitting of a higher class, he merely remained leaned against his own seat within a calm manner. Cool. Attentive.[break][break]

Because after all, for as deeply as a Seviper’s fangs had been so deeply forged within its own venoms, a Zangoose had always prevailed within its immunities to the toxins it had to offer.[break][break]

”A dream of wanting more than she has~... Sounds equally as selfish as it does ambitious, if you ask me,” he hummed, raising a brow of his own.[break][break]

He eyed her for a while longer before leaning to one side, resting an arm against his seat as his jaw found purchase against the ridges of his knuckles.[break][break]

”Far be it for me to think gender matters in a protagonist, but...”[break][break]

He thought for a little while longer, a calculating and idling touch within his eyes as he narrowed them towards her. Tapping his thumb against his cheek, he lingered upon the thought before the smile he wore faltered into a smirk; its former sense of welcoming instead replaced by a subtle aloofness.[break][break]

”...Vengeance,” had been his simple, single-worded response at first. More silence followed—thoughtfully so, seemingly—before he continued on, adding, ”Something about…chasing someone down— someone that wronged him. …Taking power back. Righting wrongs~.”[break][break]

He tilted his head further against his hand.[break][break]

(Making them regret everything they’d ever done.)

Yumi arched an eyebrow again, this time in challenge. "Is there something wrong with selfishness and ambition? I think they're only natural."[break][break]

But there was no hint of offense taken in her words. Instead, she listened to Oriel voice his thoughts. Her expression took on a hint of eagerness and excitement as she anticipated how he might describe himself to her.[break][break]

"Vengeance," Yumi repeated slowly, tasting the word, turning it over on her tongue like a rare and precious treat. She leaned back into the couch, one hand resting on her thigh, the other placed casually on a cushion in Oriel's direction.[break][break]

"You're right. Gender doesn't really matter," she continued, noting the slight change in his expression. "Vengeance is an exciting story regardless of male or female. Taking back power and righting wrongs are universal wants. I can respect a protagonist who seeks them out."[break][break]

She fell silent as she considered Oriel, calculating the best angle of approach. After all, she knew nothing about him; she couldn't trust him with an offer for a job until she understood his exact capabilities.[break][break]

Until she knew she could trust him.[break][break]

"What if there were two lead characters? And what if they found they shared a common goal, and over time, worked together to achieve it?"

”Oh, I never said there was,” he hummed. ”If anything, it’s admirable to see someone who’s selfish enough to know what’s worth chasing and taking for themselves~...”[break][break]

Her own, arched brow had been returned twofold as he chuckled, hues of slate veiling over gently as he, too, shifted back against the cushions of his seat once more. Like before, his hands moved to find one another within an embrace in the comfort of his lap, and though his gaze had been parted from hers for a brief time, he offered his utmost attention as she mused along. He nodded slightly as she spoke her parts— a reassurance to show that he, indeed, had been listening.[break][break]

At the note of her latest prompt, however, he allowed another bout of quietness to overtake him.[break][break]

A crooked sense of amusement tugged his smirk further to one side as he inhaled deeply, mulling the question over.[break][break]

”...Well, it would depend on how they develop, seeing as they both have agendas to push and secrets to keep~. In my opinion, symbiosis is equally as engaging as a raging inferno.”[break][break]

His eyes opened to gaze upon the ceilings above him at first, all while the plush of his seat proved to be a comforting cradle within his lounge.[break][break]

”If our protagonists are the same as suggested,” he went on, an idly whimsical tone caught between his words as an austere touch eagerly remained embedded within his smirk, ”then it could really go both ways, no? The male lead has vengeance in his heart and soul, and would stop at nothing to see his plans through— but for a would-be comrade in arms, would surely be willing to compromise and see eye to eye with his counterpart.”[break][break]

He tilted his head down after a few moments, sending her another, sidelong glance yet again.[break][break]

”He gives what he receives in turn. An eye for an eye; a soul for a soul— it could easily be a well-endowed partnership, should loyalty be equal, tried, and true.”[break][break]

Just like her, he eyed her with a touch of guile to his looks, narrowing his eyes in turn for a smile of challenge and prominence.[break][break]

”...So what do you think she could offer him to keep him loyal? How do you think the story could go~?”

Yumi leaned forward, resting an elbow on her knee and her chin in the palm of her hand. She considered Oriel for a silent moment, weighing his question. As someone familiar with the desire for vengeance, she thought back to her arrival in Hoenn and to the help she needed most.[break][break]

"A man seeking revenge needs resources," Yumi replied at last. "If he helps her, he will get money, extra ears and eyes to search the streets, and extra hands for dark deeds."[break][break]

She leaned back into the couch cushions.[break][break]

"The woman knows that loyalty is a two-way street. Anyone who wants to rule knows this well. And I agree about symbiosis. Raging infernos burn out. A partnership can last a lifetime."[break][break]

Yumi watched his face, gauging his reaction to her words. She herself could not help the undercurrent of mischief that came out in her own smile. Oriel was, if nothing else, an intelligent and exciting conversation partner.

Just as she seemed more than intent with doing, his gaze had also found itself upon hers—even if loosely so—before noting her in all of the regality and other means and features she’d seemingly sought fit to display before him. The touches of deviousness that dwindled upon his expression had only remained as he watched her, though upon noting the similar sense of amusement and sly confidence that blossomed upon her lips before long, a hum found its way through as he shifted slightly in favor of sitting straighter. Almost back to that same, formally put together front he’d had prior.[break]
Almost, save for the ever-persisting lingering of a subtle, yet almost playful curiosity that embedded itself within both words and guise, alike.[break][break]

”...You’re definitely right, though— speaking of resources and all else...” Once more, he leaned forward and upon his arms as they rested against his knees. His fingers found one another within a loose cradle in the space between. ”They’re definitely a solid way of garnering credibility, and credibility would ideally and naturally lead to loyalty~...”[break][break]

He snickered softly, raising a brow.[break][break]

”...And admittedly, I’d say you’ve done a fair job in engaging me enough to wanna see that loyalty and partnership happen~.”
