Her Popplio, eager to play, swam in swift circles around the other woman's Wishiwashi. The little sea lion barked to entice the fish into a game of chase.[break][break]

Yumi ignored her Pokémon and leaned over for a better look at the Corsola. As she did, movement beneath the waves caught her eye: a Toxapex joined by three Mareanie. Its brood, perhaps. The Brutal Star Pokémon stalked toward the Corsola, moving slowly but with clear intent.[break][break]

The black-haired woman pointed at the Toxapex and Mareanie. "Looks like we might witness something nasty soon. Don't those eat Corsola?" she asked the woman riding the Corviknight.

The man in front of her was not the Hitoshi that Yumi knew. Her Hitoshi was fearless to the point of recklessness. He believed he could protect her from anything.[break][break]

The man in her apartment looked and sounded like her Hitoshi, but the events of the day had irrevocably changed him — events she did not understand. Twenty years, he had said. Yumi's thoughts wandered to the Legendary Pokémon called Celebi. Had that creature intervened somehow?[break][break]

"We can and we will," she said at length, her voice soft, as if she were speaking with a child. "The world is full of greed and evil. We knew that in Johto, and we knew that coming here. Perhaps here, the stakes are higher, but we can't let that stop us."[break][break]

Then she pulled Hitoshi into a hug. They had hugged once before, when he'd tried to comfort her on the day her family had kicked her out. She embraced him now to pay him back for all the support he'd given her over the years.[break][break]

But despite the gesture, Yumi spoke next with the quiet, commanding presence of a woman who expected loyalty until the end. "I need you to trust me."

Yumi grew still at the sight of Hitoshi's tears. She couldn't remember a time when he'd cried in front of her.[break][break]

Another person might have felt disgusted to see a weeping servant, but she understood Hitoshi better than anyone else. She knew the words he'd spoken weren't some deception or exaggeration. He was incapable of such things around her.[break][break]

Instead of scolding him, she reached out and grasped his hands with hers. Applying a firm but gentle pressure, she hoped it would comfort him.[break][break]

"I believe you," Yumi said softly.[break][break]

Even if it seemed too fantastical to wrap her head around, she had to believe Hitoshi. After all, no one else believed in her as much as he did.[break][break]

She let go of his hands. "We have to stay here," she said, her tone more firm this time. "And we knew this place was dangerous when we arrived. We agreed to become stronger, didn't we?"

When Yumi woke up that morning, she knew Team Rocket had plans to mobilize at the Ancient Tomb on Route 120. She had read the emails and heard the chatter. And she'd chosen to stay home, knowing battle was not her forte.[break][break]

But Hitoshi Inoue had gone to fight, to bring glory to her name and increase their reputation in the crime syndicate. She'd given him her blessing when he departed that morning, expecting to hear back from him after evening.[break][break]

In true Hitoshi fashion, he walked right through her front door. His waterlogged clothing, frayed and torn from what she'd assumed was the fight, dripped onto the welcome mat.[break][break]

"Welcome back," Yumi said with a smile, looking up from the couch where she sat reading. Then her nose crinkled slightly at the sight of him. "We really need to get you a Pokémon that can teleport."[break][break]

As she spoke, she put down her book and rose to fetch a towel so he could dry himself off. Without servants, she had to do almost everything by herself — a fact that still irked her even though she'd gotten used to it.[break][break]

"How did it go?" she asked as she returned, towel in hand. She hadn't noticed yet the change in his demeanor.

A brief investigation following Casino Starlight's grand reopening party revealed to Yumi the bookstore owned by one oriel novikov. She had met him and his companion during dinner, not expecting either one to intrigue her as they had.[break][break]

Their shallow answers reminded her of the way some people in the business spoke, and she had a mind to dig more deeply — to satisfy her curiosity, if nothing else.[break][break]

The bell on the front door chimed as she entered the shop. A beautiful arrangement of books on shelves greeted her, followed shortly by the enticing aroma of coffee and the soft music from speakers. Then a man's voice hailed her. Taking a few more steps into the shop, she craned her neck for a better look at him.[break][break]

"Just the man I wanted to see," Yumi remarked, her lips twisting into a smirk. But conversing across two different floors was for people without elegance or poise. She quickly found the stairs leading up to the loft.[break][break]

"Oriel, right?" she said as she neared him, just in case she was wrong. "From Casino Starlight?"[break][break]

A part of her grew annoyed at the intrusion, but she let go of that emotion almost immediately. The ocean was big enough for two of them, after all.[break][break]

She listened as Enzo described his trip to Lumiose. It amused her to imagine him as the type to push another man's buttons and get creative in the interrogation chamber. The man she knew was different — composed, calculating — but she knew well that people never had only one side to them.[break][break]

"So was his method more successful, in the end? Or did you win your game?" she asked.[break][break]

A Gallade sauntered into view, head swiveling for a good look at the two humans and their Pokémon companions. After her Popplio put him to sleep with SING, she threw another Pokéball.

Yumi loved summertime. Goldenrod City was close enough to the seaside that she spent every summer of her childhood playing in the ocean. The increasing demands made of her as she grew up did nothing to change that habit, and even now, in Hoenn, she seized every opportunity to enjoy a swim.[break][break]

On this day, she sat atop her Sharpedo as the shark floated at the water's surface. While she held on with both hands, she dipped her feet in the water, letting its coolness fight off the heat of the sun overhead. A few feet away, her Popplio jumped and played in the waves.[break][break]

"Don't wander too far, Suimei," Yumi called after the small Pokémon.[break][break]

But she wasn't paying attention. The sight of several wild Pokémon caught her eye, their forms crowding together in the water. The Popplio barked with excitement and pointed a flipper at them.[break][break]

Yumi squinted for a better look. "What are those?" she wondered aloud. "They look like… Corsola, maybe?"
