Yumi raised her eyebrow at Enzo's mention of an 'interesting' trip to Lumiose City. He asked about her own travels before she could inquire further, however, so she put a mental pin on that thought.[break][break]

"Mmm, my family made a couple of business trips to Sinnoh and we always stayed at ski lodges in the north, near Snowpoint City. My father loved skiing, see, and we don't get mountains or snow quite like Sinnoh does."[break][break]

A couple of wild Pokémon scrambled by, spooked by the volume of her voice. She watched them scatter for a moment before looking back at her mentor.[break][break]

"Galar was boring. They don't have a lot of culture there," Yumi admitted. "I did travel around on my school breaks, but there wasn't much to see."[break][break]

She shrugged, a movement that caused Suimei to wriggle in her arms.[break][break]

"Where in Sinnoh did you go? And what's this about Lumiose?" A teasing grin slowly spread across her face.

Yumi Hasegawa is inviting one and all to a glamorous costume party at Casino Starlight, inspired by A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM. Costumes themed after faeries and the feywild are encouraged. Bring your Fairy and Dark-type Pokémon with you, too! Come for dinner and a show, music and dancing, and of course, gambling![break][break]

THIS EVENT TAKES PLACE BEFORE GOODBYE GALAR

ROUNDING OFF THE NIGHT

The clock ticks on, but most guests barely notice the passing of time, so engrossed are they by all that glitters within Casino Starlight.[break][break]

Some leave once their hunger and thirst are sated by decadent food and drink. Others enjoy the fireworks to the conclusion of the show before departing. But so many remain at the gambling tables and slot machines. Money disappears as easily as hopes, as quickly as dreams.[break][break]

And like dreams, so too does the revelry eventually fade. The man's voice returns to the PA system to announce the closing hour of the casino. The last drinks are purchased, the tabs are paid, and taxis are called. Some guests pay for a night at the attached hotel; ever in safety shall they rest.[break][break]

Finally, the casino falls dark for the night. Beds fill and streets empty. Night security sets up behind screens, watchful, wary.[break][break]

Trip away; make no stay;[break]
Meet again by the break of day…[break]

Enzo kept his answer vague, yet Yumi picked up on the details hinting at his previous life. A low-level grunt certainly might have to travel far for his boss' business, whether that involved murdering people, smuggling goods, or other illicit activities.[break][break]

"Oh, you traveled? Where have you visited?" Yumi asked as a Ponyta trotted into view. She murmured a command to her Popplio. Suimei subdued the wild Pokémon with SING, giving Yumi plenty of time to throw a Pokéball.[break][break]

Turning back to the conversation, the woman said, "I traveled all over Johto as a child, and we took vacations to Alola and Sinnoh, too. And you know I lived in Galar for a time."

The rustle of tall grass indicated Pokémon nearby, but Yumi was more interested in the conversation with her mentor than whatever crossed their path. She knew nothing of Enzo's history. It had never come up in their months working together, and she'd known better than to ask.[break][break]

After all, certain transactions occasionally took place at The Nimbus, one that suggested connections as questionable as her family's back in Johto. Yumi understood and appreciated secrecy as much as any other criminal's daughter.[break][break]

She and Enzo were equals now, however. Perhaps he'd be more open to discussing it, especially in the seclusion of their walk.[break][break]

"How long ago was your last visit?" Yumi asked, tilting her head in curiosity.

Yumi's dark gaze slid between oriel novikov and MARIA LANARO-MATISSE as they spoke in turn.[break][break]

"A bookstore owner and an accountant. How quaint. Aren't you two the humble pair?" she commented, neither praising nor demeaning them.[break][break]

She rose from the table and plucked a glass of champagne from a passing tray. Raising it in farewell toward the seated couple, she said, "I shall leave you to enjoy the rest of your night."[break][break]

Yumi made her way next to the desserts, pausing for a moment to admire the results of her staff's hard work. Then she picked up a small plate and selected a brownie and a berry tart.[break][break]

With champagne flute in one hand and desserts in the other, she exited the Empoleon Room to enjoy the fireworks on the balcony.

ROUNDING OFF THE NIGHT

Dinner ends and the dancers return backstage. As staff whisk away used plates, utensils, and glasses, the man's voice from earlier came back on the PA system to say:[break][break]

"Dearest guests, it is our pleasure to introduce the Explouders Jazz and Swing Ensemble, a Sootopolian band who will set the pace for tonight's merriment. If you are feeling lively, come up on the dance floor. Otherwise, enjoy decadent desserts made by our chefs."[break][break]

Musicians gather upon the stage, dressed in dapper suits and bowties. Ceiling lights fall upon the dance floor in front of them, indicating where guests should gather if they wish to dance.[break][break]

At the opposite end of the room, staff members arrange platters and trays of desserts upon a long banquet table. All manner of scrumptious snacks are made available: bite-sized chocolate fudge brownies, mini berry tarts, round cheesecake bites, small bags of popcorn, candy bars, and more.[break][break]

"Additionally, the balcony doors on this floor have been unlocked so guests can enjoy a fireworks show to close off the night. And as always, the casino remains open for any and all interested in testing their luck."[break][break]

Those who wander onto the balcony find a gorgeous view of Sootopolis at night laid out before them. Tables and chairs are available for lounging, while shadowed pockets of the balcony allow for more private conversations.[break][break]

Fireworks launch into the sky, exploding in brilliant bursts of shimmering color. Some of them have been cleverly shaped to resemble Pokémon. Anyone seeking refuge from the noise can return inside, where more gambling and games await.[break][break]

"Yumi," the hostess of the event introduced herself, though oriel novikov had correctly identified her. She flashed him a proud smile. "And yes, that's right."[break][break]

Her gaze slid sideways to regard MARIA LANARO-MATISSE.[break][break]

"You know, I'd say it's because of all the tensions lately that this party has been such a success. People will look for any reason to let loose and forget their worries. One just has to give it to them."[break][break]

The performance on stage concluded, and the dancers moved into positions for the next dance. Yumi watched them briefly before turning back to her guests.[break][break]

"So, what do you two do for work?" she asked, her tone nonchalant but her dark eyes critical in their assessment. Something about Oriel's and Maria's demeanors reminded her of Sevipers in tall grass, lying in wait for prey.[break][break]

They reminded her of herself.

After eating her meal and finishing her wine, Yumi had to return to her hostess obligations. Thankfully, mingling with guests was easy. A few minutes here with one, a few minutes there with another, without any requirement on her part to remain for longer conversation.[break][break]

And so she wove between the tables, saying hello, asking how people liked their meals. She spotted a couple seated together and momentarily took a seat on the woman's other side.[break][break]

"I don't believe we've met before," she said to oriel novikov and MARIA LANARO-MATISSE. A slender hand extended to each of them in turn. "I'm pleased you could come. After all, with all the high tensions in the region lately, it's nice to relax for a night. You are enjoying yourselves, I hope?"[break][break]

A waiter stopped by, placing a plate of Miltank steak in front of Oriel. Then she turned to Maria to take her dinner order.

Yumi glanced up as a stranger approached. She smiled at his compliment. "I am glad to see you enjoying yourself," she said to jade rivers.[break][break]

Another stranger appeared at the first one's side moments later, their eyes locked upon the stage. Yumi turned her attention to the dancers as well. She nodded as Makoto Kurumi commented on their talent.[break][break]

"They're a local dance troupe from Sootopolis," she explained. "Incredibly skilled, incredibly hardworking. I really admire how their movements evoke so much emotion."[break][break]

A waiter arrived bearing her meal on a tray. The strangers left, joining a third to sit at a separate table. Yumi bid them a good evening and began her meal.

Yumi allowed herself to breathe a sigh of relief as the Porygon2 fell asleep. She remained on the far side of the Scolipede as Xenon hopped over to collect their prize. Yumi recalled her two Pokémon, pleased with their performance.[break][break]

She was about to leave upon the other woman's recommendation when the sprinkler system engaged. Water soaked through her clothes with startling speed. Makeup began running down her face.[break][break]

"You have got to be kidding me!" Yumi screeched, exasperated.[break][break]

But Xenon was already gone, striding triumphantly down the hall behind her.

The invitation to a weekend retreat at Lavaridge Town had been a welcome surprise. Yumi had worked nonstop for over a month to ensure the successful reopening of Casino Starlight, and nothing seemed more rewarding than a luxurious hot spring vacation.[break][break]

That the invitation had come from none other than her mentor and former employer vincenzo de luca was even more of a delight.[break][break]

She had grown fond of the man during the past year. Though their previous relationship had been strictly professional thanks to her employment at his hotel, the dynamic between them had changed. Ever since she'd assumed ownership of the casino, he seemed to encourage more casual exchanges between them.[break][break]

After settling into her hotel room, Yumi joined Enzo for a walk outside the town. The mountainous scenery provided a breathtaking view as they made their way down Route 112.[break][break]

"Thanks for inviting me, Mr. de Luca," she said to her companion as they strolled down a well-traveled path. She carried her Popplio, Suimei, in her arms.[break][break]

Her eyes sparkled with amusement. "A natural hot spring, a hotel in the old Hoennian style, with traditional dinners available for guests? You do know how to live it up."

Yumi knew exactly the place in Goldenrod City. They used to stop by after school on Fridays. She picked a different flavor every week — and there were so many — but dependable Hitoshi only ever picked vanilla.[break][break]

The woman took out her phone. "Let's find a good place, then. I want to try a few different flavors."[break][break]

While she thumbed through local recommendations and skimmed reviews, she listened to her bodyguard's suggestion.[break][break]

"A movie?" she echoed, glancing up at him.[break][break]

It had been years since she'd been to a movie theater. She preferred to watch Netflix dramas and movies at home, since her family's manor had an excellent entertainment center built into one of the larger rooms.[break][break]

But if they were being nostalgic for their childhood years, then why not check out the local theater?[break][break]

"That sounds fun. Let's do it." She reached for another slice of watermelon. "After we finish our snack here. We shouldn't let this go to waste."
