Yumi stood back and watched patiently as Hitoshi prepared for the suikawari. She bit back a giggle as Lapras teased his master, not once but three times. Still, her lips quirked upward in an amused smirk.[break][break]

"I think your new friend likes to play," she said to Hitoshi once he'd ripped the blindfold off. "I can't say I blame him."[break][break]

Dropping her shoes onto the sand, she stepped forward and extended a hand for the blindfold and stick. "My turn."[break][break]

Once she tied the cloth around her eyes, she lifted it to peek up at the Lapras. "Go easy on me, hmm? I'm not as good as Hitoshi," she said with a laugh. Then she lowered the strip of fabric into position and adjusted her grip on the stick.[break][break]

"Here goes!" Yumi swung. Compared to the practiced, precise arcs of Hitoshi's attempts, she might as well have been waving a pool noodle. A satisfied smack filled the air as the impact jolted her hand and arms.[break][break]

"Ha!" she exclaimed, pulling off the blindfold. Unfortunately, her strength was so weak, she hadn't even made a dent in the watermelon's rind. Her beaming smile quickly fell into a pouty frown.

Just as the woman in the red dress (Naomi Sato) explained that no, she wasn't being bothered, fern delaney appeared out of the crowd and sidled up to the man that had been on the receiving end of Yumi's suspicion.[break][break]

At the intimate way Fern spoke with him, Yumi realized he must be jayden cross. Fern had mentioned Jayden a few times to her as the man they were dating, so the woman relaxed and offered her friend a smile and a wave when their gazes met.[break][break]

It was then that parker jones exited the bathroom. Her eyes went wide with panic as they darted between her and the crown-clad woman — Nomi, the Head Scientist.[break][break]

Yumi arched an eyebrow at Parker. "No, we've just met. I was only complimenting Miss Sato on her outfit."[break][break]

Without warning, Nomi excused herself to get a drink and fled with a rapidity that belied her earlier insistence nothing was bothering her. Yumi watched her go, confused, before turning her glare upon the pink-haired woman who she thought had been her friend.[break][break]

But it had been weeks since they'd last spoken, and Yumi was beginning to think of Parker as nothing more than a coward.[break][break]

"Enjoy your night," she said with a sharpness that only complemented her Seviper-like smile. Then she departed in a sweep of lavender and emerald.[break][break]

After taking the elevator to the fourth floor, Yumi entered the Empoleon Room with a throng of other guests. She did not recognize anyone among them, so she sat herself down at one of the half-moon tables.[break][break]

"I'll have the roast Farfetch'd," she said, catching a passing waiter on the arm.

Yumi Hasegawa is inviting one and all to a glamorous costume party at Casino Starlight, inspired by A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM. Costumes themed after faeries and the feywild are encouraged. Bring your Fairy and Dark-type Pokémon with you, too! Come for dinner and a show, music and dancing, and of course, gambling![break][break]

THIS EVENT TAKES PLACE BEFORE GOODBYE GALAR

DINNER AND A SHOW

Time passes, an ephemeral delight, as friends reconnect over glasses of champagne and strangers meet around gambling tables. However, before too long, a man's jovial voice announces over the PA system:[break][break]

"Your attention please, dearest guests. The best chefs in the region have been hard at work in our kitchens, and have declared that dinner is now ready to be served. Please make your way to the Empoleon Room on the fourth floor if you wish to partake in the finest dining Casino Starlight has to offer."[break][break]

Elevators chime as some guests make their way to the fourth floor; others choose to ascend the magnificent stairs. Helpful staff guide you into the largest and most lavish ballroom of the casino, where numerous half-moon tables have been set up facing a grand stage at the far wall.[break][break]

The tables are adorned with ivory tablecloths and immaculate place settings. Tealight candles flicker within small glass holders. Menus printed on luxurious paper present the choice of entrees for this evening:[break][break]

Grilled Miltank steak (grade A5) with a wasabi soy dipping sauce, served with steamed white rice and a salad of radish greens
Roasted Farfetch'd breast in a brown citrus sauce, served with roasted white asparagus, mashed sweet potato, and sliced oran berry
Fried Magikarp cheeks and steamed Shellder in a salsa verde sauce, served with fresh farmhouse bread

Once all the guests have taken their seats, the lights dim and a spotlight shines upon the stage. From darkened doorways, a troupe of dancers flit like shadows into place. A haunting song fills the air, and before your eyes, the dancers unfurl into motion.[break][break]

Slowly at first, like the petals of a flower blooming in moonlight. Their movements are bewitching and hypnotic, their costumes evoking creatures of myth and folklore. As music fills the room with terrifying, powerful notes, the dance quickens, transporting the guests to a midnight bacchanalia deep in a fae-touched wood.[break][break]

With the last notes of the song, the spell comes to an end. The performers bow to applause, then get in position for their next dance. Quietly and unobtrusively, waiters take orders from those seated at tables. Glasses are kept filled with water and wine.[break][break]

Of course, guests may return to the casino at any time, should the itch to gamble the night away prove impossible to ignore.[break][break]

"What are you talking about?" was all Yumi could blurt out when Xenon failed to describe her Pokémon by their species. But she understood that the other woman's Pokémon were, perhaps, too large for the building or too unsuitable for a pair of cybersecurity specialists.[break][break]

"You couldn't have brought something more appropriate?" Yumi hissed, incredulous.[break][break]

In the conference room, Kibin's AXE KICK crashed through the pile of computers. Thankfully, one of Xenon's Pokémon was useful at that moment; the Scolipede's exoskeleton shielded the women from harm.[break][break]

However, the DISCHARGE crashed into Yumi's Lilligant, sending the Pokémon stumbling backward into her Bug-type ally.[break][break]

"Kibin!" the black-haired woman cried out, though she had not needed to worry. The Lilligant seemed fine, if a little shaken.[break][break]

Still, Yumi was not about to let the Porygon2 cause more damage — to them or to the building. Opening another Pokéball, she released her Gothitelle. "Kuroyuri, use HYPNOSIS on that Porygon2. Quickly!"[break][break]

The Astral Body Pokémon obeyed, casting the spell from behind the safety of the Scolipede's huge bulk.

The way Hitoshi described his new friend made Yumi think he was speaking about another member of Team Rocket. She didn't mind if he made friends, but the thought of an outsider participating in their nostalgia made her mouth screw up as if she'd eaten something sour.[break][break]

"Oh, I see."[break][break]

All that apprehension melted away as soon as she saw the old Lapras waiting in the surf. Yumi laughed with delight. She took off her expensive heels and held them in one hand by the straps before making her way across the beach toward the Pokémon.[break][break]

"Hello!" she exclaimed, giggling. "So you're Hitoshi's new friend? Please take good care of him for me." She bowed playfully, a slight hinge of her hip. Yumi never bowed.[break][break]

Turning to her bodyguard, she listened to him explain the variation in their yearly tradition.[break][break]

"A piñata?" She thought she understood what he meant, but in truth, she hadn't ever seen one before. "You go first, then. I want to see what I'm supposed to do."

Turning away from the craps table, Yumi flashed a beaming smile at vincenzo de luca. She had hoped her former employer and mentor would attend, and his choice of costume did not disappoint her.[break][break]

"I'm so glad you could make it," she said, briefly taking his arm. It was contact she had not allowed herself when she was still in his employment, but they were business partners now. "Thank you so much, Mr. de Luca."[break][break]

She gave a gracious nod back to Kosei Kiryu, who appeared to be Enzo's date. And then she was off to mingle more, barely hearing mint frost's approach. A dextrous hand swiped a champagne glass from one of the bar stations as she went.[break][break]

So crowded was the casino floor that Yumi almost collided with a young woman with pink hair near the bathrooms (Naomi Sato). The guest was wearing such a gorgeous ensemble that Yumi could not help but compliment her.[break][break]

"My, what a beautiful costume. The color brings out your eyes," she said matter-of-factly, her fashion designer's mind kicking into analytical gear. "Are you enjoying the grand reopening, miss?"[break][break]

Yumi lifted her gaze and locked eyes with a strange man (jayden cross) who was staring after the pink-haired woman, confusion plastered over his face.[break][break]

"Or is someone bothering you?" Yumi asked, her tone taking on the hard edge women's voices adopted when defending other women.

The paperwork. Of course. Yumi's smile fell into a serious expression, though the fire in her eyes did not diminish. "You're right, I mustn't get ahead of myself. I need to check if Team Rocket owns the building now that Underboss Decker is gone."[break][break]

She was not certain if the criminal organization would be open to a negotiation on the cost of the building considering her ties with them. Enzo's offer to assist with that aspect was a generous one, but she needed time for calculations. How quickly could she repay such a debt?[break][break]

Yumi took a few steps toward the door back to the staircase. "Allow me a few days to do some research and start a conversation with Rocket. I'll find out how much they are willing to sell for, then contact you. How does that sound?"[break][break]

It occurred to her how strange it was to talk with Enzo as a peer. No longer would she view him as her employer but as a business contact.[break][break]

The thought brought a smile back to her lips. She had ascended.

Yumi accepted Xenon's answer about her Gengar with a cool nod, even if she had no idea who Master Koga was. She easily took the lead as well, considering she'd been raised for leadership.[break][break]

However, she did raise an eyebrow at Xenon's mention of her other Pokémon. "What else did you bring with you?" she asked, curious. "You might need to use one of them if we find our Porygon2."[break][break]

At the door to the office that supposedly held the Pokémon they needed, Yumi nodded again at Xenon's instruction. "Blue instead of red, red instead of blue," she echoed, determined to finish the job quickly so she could go home.[break][break]

She seized the handle of the door and pushed it open. Inside was a conference room, complete with a long table and multiple chairs. A projector screen had been pulled down against one wall; it displayed what looked like a computer's desktop.[break][break]

And there, in the center of the room, was the strangely colored Porygon2.[break][break]

"Grab it, Kibin!" Yumi ordered. Her Hisuian Lilligant sprang into action, launching another AXE KICK at the Virtual Pokémon.

Yumi did indeed have pictures — a few photos taken with her phone of her work on some models her classes provided. However, if she was going to treat her exchange with Summer as business instead of pleasure, she wanted to send the high quality photos taken by a professional photographer.[break][break]

"I can email you my portfolio," she said to Summer. "After I get back home from the show, of course. They're on my laptop."[break][break]

With that said, Yumi turned her attention back to the runway. The show was almost halfway over at that point, and she hadn't yet seen anything truly stunning.[break][break]

But perhaps the best was being saved for last. Leaning back in her chair, she fanned herself with her pamphlet and watched with growing anticipation.

The woman stared at her employer, stunned. Her heart burst with a storm of emotions: gratitude, joy, pride.[break][break]

Gratitude for Enzo, because he saw something in her that no one else had, prompting him to hire her and take her under his wing. Joy and pride of a woman who'd worked hard to make a name for herself in an unfamiliar region.[break][break]

"Are you serious? Me?" Yumi breathed, her smirk having melted into a rare, beaming smile.[break][break]

Even though Sen probably deserved whatever filthy, cockroach-infested apartment he'd managed to acquire, Yumi detested the idea of anyone in her family living anywhere less than luxurious.[break][break]

"You'll not sully the Hasegawa name by living in a shithole," she decided. "Your salary should allow you to move out and find somewhere nicer, even if it has to be in the Lower District. Let me know when you're ready to move out and I'll help."[break][break]

More like her Pokémon would help with the moving while she oversaw the whole process.[break][break]

Sen was unable to give compliments without putting down the other person (and himself) in the same breath. Yumi was used it. What she hadn't expected, however, was her immediate reaction to his words, "So what did it matter?"[break][break]

Yes, she tended to land on her feet and keep running. She could figure out how to make a name for herself without their family's support. But that didn't mean being kicked out of her own home hadn't hurt. That didn't mean she hadn't cried herself to sleep for several nights in a row at first, half-furious, half-depressed.[break][break]

And not even her cousin, who regular knew the disappoint of their elders, had shown her empathy.[break][break]

"You should leave now, Sen," Yumi said abruptly, no longer willing to entertain his presence in her new home. In her voice simmered fury. "I'll see you tomorrow."

Despite Sen's acceptance of her offer, Yumi did not smile.[break][break]

"Okay. You start tomorrow. Meet me at the casino so you can get a tour and you can tell me what you need to work. I'm in the middle of the hiring process for other positions, so if you need people to help with IT, let me know."[break][break]

She reached down and resumed petting her Delcatty behind the ears. Offering the job to Sen was a risk, one she would watch closely. But if he was good at one thing — if she could depend on him for one thing — it was the tech-y stuff.[break][break]

"Where are you staying?" Yumi asked. She should have kicked him out, as he was overstaying his welcome, but a part of her wanted to know.[break][break]

The part of her that missed having a family.

"Blood would have been a great reason if our blood hadn't turned on me," Yumi shot back with great acidity. "Blood has shown me exactly how much I should value it."[break][break]

On the other hand, none of the people who'd helped her since her exile were blood relatives: Hitoshi Inoue, Mei Liu, vincenzo de luca, even Cillian Quinn and BARNABY FINCH. From them, she'd learned that loyalty was earned, not promised.[break][break]

But Sen's suggestion was not one she could dismiss in its entirety. He was right. While she didn't wish to hand him the reins of her personal social media presence, there was another way he could help her.[break][break]

"There is something, actually," Yumi said, taking out her phone and opening the mobile browser. "I've taken over ownership of a casino in Sootopolis, Casino Starlight. And I need someone to maintain its website and handle any IT issues."[break][break]

She turned her phone around to show him the website.[break][break]

"It's a job, not a favor. You'll earn a paycheck and get benefits. Health insurance. But you have to actually work, otherwise I'll fire you." She leaned back, withdrawing her phone into her lap. "What do you say?"

Yumi hurried after Xenon, coming to a halt when the other woman backpedaled out of a larger room and slammed the doors shut. Yumi barely had time to register Xenon's before they were running again — in the complete opposite direction.[break][break]

A loud bang from behind them caused Yumi to glance over her shoulder. Xenon's Gengar had been thrown into a wall as a swarm of Porygon burst through the doors. The buildup of energy in front of them warned her of a coming attack.[break][break]

Thinking quickly, Yumi tried to grab Xenon's arm to drag her into a quiet side room. Should she allow herself to be dragged inside, Yumi would shut the door behind them just before the Porygon's moves fired. The walls and door shook with the impact.[break][break]

"Is your Gengar going to be okay?" Yumi asked Xenon, breathless from running more than she ever had in her life.
