Slateport Fashion Week. Yumi had worked hard for months to earn a coveted invitation, both through her social media influence and her fashion design classes at Slateport University. Finally, she found herself sitting just alongside the runway, shoulder-to-shoulder with other members of Hoenn's celebrity elite.[break][break]

Unfortunately, Hitoshi Inoue hadn't received an invitation. Yumi had been forced to leave him outside the venue, so she'd suggested he find something to eat while he waited for the show to conclude.[break][break]

At that moment, it had yet to start. The crowd buzzed with soft conversation as pop music played softly in the background. Yumi's dark gaze scanned the room, memorizing the faces and outfits of everyone she could manage. She herself was dressed in a strapless black dress with voluminous, off-the-shoulder sleeves, tights, and kitten heels. A bright red clutch purse matched the accent color of her shoes.[break][break]

"Some people here look like they stepped out of a clothing chain's discount outlet," Yumi grumbled, only loudly enough for those seated on either side of her to hear. She glanced sidelong at one of them, a blue-haired woman with beautiful, two-toned eyes. At least her outfit was acceptable.[break][break]

"I'm right, right?" Yumi said to her with a smirk.

It was to no one's surprise that Summer Atreides was attending Slateport Fashion Week. She was a regular amongst the rich and famous to attend the show, and she was sure to raise hell if she didn't get an invite. It was always her opportunity to see what the newest styles were, who could demonstrate the best skill.[break][break]

Who would get Summer's money next?[break][break]

However, this year, it also served a bit of a different purpose. She was in the works of opening her own clothing business, and many of these creators were the top of the top. She needed their creations in her shop for success with her target audience.[break][break]

But, so far, Summer Prescott was not all that impressed. Her neutral face expressed that much as model after model walked down the runway. With a small sigh, she waved herself with her silk fan, her glittered nails sparkling in the light.[break][break]

Summer's attention broke from the show momentarily to glance at the woman beside her. It was a fair point. She couldn't help but chuckle, a small smirk tugging at her lips.[break][break]

"You're not wrong. I can't say I'm impressed yet."

Without even trying to be discreet, Yumi scanned her neighbor's outfit with a critical eye. The woman's dress was an elegant white, contrasting Yumi's own dress of playful black.[break][break]

"Yours is beautiful, though. Timeless, classic lines. The rectangular window is a modern, mature touch," she commented, gesturing to her own chest instead of rudely pointing to the other woman's.[break][break]

Movement from the runway caught Yumi's eye, and she turned to observe the models currently strutting down it. She recognized some styles mentioned during her workshops — the up-and-coming trends that might dominate the coming season's collections.[break][break]

Leaning back toward her companion, Yumi asked, "What are you expecting or hoping to see today?"

Summer offered a smile, smoothing down some of the material of her dress as the woman analyzed it with quite the detailed eye. Though it was an outfit she liked, it wasn't a risqué piece she'd normally go for. When she was getting ready, she felt herself hold back.[break][break]

Perhaps because she was in a relationship, no matter how strained it was. And she was pregnant. Would it be unbefitting for her child to look back at his or her mother and see her showing off her breasts during her pregnancy? The thought made her determine this was a better choice.[break][break]

She'd even sent a photo to Gunner, hoping he'd have some time to react to it at some point.[break][break]

"Thank you. It's been sitting in my closet for a while now, so I thought it was time to pull it out. Yours is a lovely piece too. The sleeves hanging at the sides instead of your shoulders. Do they have something sticky to hold them in place to make sure they don't fall? I haven't seen them slip once since you've sat down."[break][break]

Summer watched a few more models trek up and down the runway. Nothing yet.[break][break]

"I want something new and fresh. I feel like everything I've seen so far has been done before, or it looks like it's cheaply done. It's not what I'm hoping for. I want a designer's style to catch my eye and say, 'this is the line you've been waiting for,'" she said, her hands waving in the air for emphasis.[break][break]

A glance to the woman. "Have you been here before? Who's style has been a favorite of yours?"

Yumi shook her head. "It's in the design of the sleeve. See how there's elastic? It hugs close to the body normally, but can stretch if I need to move my arms."[break][break]

Briefly, she showed the construction to the other woman.[break][break]

Then she turned her attention back to the runway, though she remained tuned in to listen to her companion. Yumi nodded, though the vagueness of the answer raised a flag of alarm within her.[break][break]

Who was this woman? Was she so new to the fashion scene she couldn't name a single famous label?[break][break]

"This is my first invitation," Yumi admitted, though neither her voice nor bearing showed any sign of shame for that fact. "But I am a huge fan of the House of Glaus, but I'm curious to see Primarina's upcoming collection."[break][break]

She paused to admire a particularly avant garde dress on the model passing them, then looked back at her conversation partner with open interest.[break][break]

"I'm Yumi Hasegawa, by the way." Perhaps the other woman knew of her from social media, but if not… "I own the Casino Starlight in Sootopolis."

"I think it's lovely. Do you remember where you got your outfit? I'd love to find something like that for myself. At least the style of it."[break][break]

It was rare that Summer would be impressed with someone else's outfit. Typically, others would gawk at her style and ask for her recommendations too high out of their budgets. But this woman had taste.[break][break]

"House of Glaus has an enormous standard to stand up to this year, if I do say so myself. I feel like they'll have an interesting time competing against Mystic Masquerain this year. As for Primarina... I'm interested to see the collection myself."[break][break]

The woman certainly presented with a knowledge that even certain people attending the event didn't have. Summer wondered how invested she was in this field of work.[break][break]

"Casino Starlight!" Summer exclaimed, almost causing a disruption. "My dear friend Killian owned it before you did, Miss Yumi. So you're his successor."[break][break]

Killian Decker. Summer had almost erased the moment she had wandered into that control room drunk and called the admin Killian Dicker. The memory still haunted her to this day, as did the work he put her in to make up for it.[break][break]

"Ah, my apologies. I got excited. My name is Summer Prescott. It's a pleasure to meet you, Miss Hasegawa."

Yumi smirked, haughty and proud. She preened like a Quaquaval. "I made it. It's my final piece for the Advanced Sewing workshop I just finished."[break][break]

She nodded along as the woman shared her own thoughts and expectations, though she kept her eyes on the models walking the runway. Every so often, she made a mental note of the designer and line, prepared to look them up later once the show had ended.[break][break]

"I am," Yumi confirmed at the mention of her casino's previous owner. She had never met Killian Decker, but that hadn't mattered. Money was money.[break][break]

Her eyes did light up, however, when the woman introduced herself.[break][break]

"The Summer Corleone? My, I should be honored." The black-haired woman's voice was saccharine in its sweetness. "I've read about your recent achievements as CEO. You're an inspiration, you know? For women everywhere."[break][break]

Yumi fanned herself with the pamphlet for the show.[break][break]

"I hope to rival your success one day."

"So are you a student, then? It's quite impressive. Dare I say, I would absolutely hire you myself." It was, in a way, a soft offer at a job. She didn't know if the woman was done with her schooling or not, but her talent would be an asset for her company.[break][break]

She did not quite expect the reaction she received as she introduced herself to Yumi. The drippingly sweet tone and the light in her eyes would normally boost Summer's ego.[break][break]

There was a feeling of disgust when she thought about her past. Merrick Prescott came to mind. Summer was successful, yes, but would she be as successful in her own right without her father's help in the past?[break][break]

Instead, she offered a kind, bright smile, extending her manicured hand for her to shake should she choose to. "I hope you do. I would love the competition. Not to mention, I'd love another woman to be my number one contender in the business world. It would show those scoundrels their place."[break][break]

Summer laughed softly to herself, crossing one leg over the other daintily. "What do you want to do in fashion, Yumi?"

"You flatter me. Surely your personal stylist is doing amazing work already, though," Yumi said, indicating Summer's dress. And what other reason would the CEO of Lion Heart Trading Company wish to hire a fashionista? "But if you're going to fire them, well…"[break][break]

Yumi smirked, then grasped Summer's outstretched hand. But the gesture was less of a shake and more of a brief clasp. Born and raised with Johtonian traditions, the black-haired woman was not a fan of the Western handshake. It was far too masculine for her taste.[break][break]

"I will strive not to let you down, Miss Corleone," Yumi said with a light laugh, though in truth, she was not going to succeed for anyone's sake but her own. "With you in trade and me in fashion, we will undoubtedly have the world at our feet."[break][break]

A pretty comment. She knew the truth would be far more complicated, especially with men like FERNANDO SILPH at the helm of the region's economic powerhouses.[break][break]

"I'm interested in starting my own fashion line," Yumi answered honestly. She raised a manicured hand to the models strutting down the runway. "Between the glamor of haute couture and the stability of ready-to-wear pieces, I'd design my own collections and sell them through retail shops. I've already contacted a few boutiques in the Upper District."[break][break]

With a student's portfolio, of course. Yumi was still far from producing and selling clothing, as the process of designing her first collection would take some time. But Summer did not need to know that.

"My own stylist is practically useless. I hardly ever use one myself unless it's for an enormous event. I'd rather choose my own outfits and do my own makeup or hair. I know what I like, and the ones I've used have failed to see that vision."[break][break]

Truth be told, Summer would rarely ever give them a chance. A simple preview of an outfit or a look would send her into a fit, and then she'd find herself down one more person in her party.[break][break]

Oh, well. The world was painful. She couldn't do anything about it.[break][break]

"You show promise, though. I'd love to give you the opportunity to work with me. Why don't I give you my card? Reach out when you have a chance," Summer said, reaching into her handbag and extending a elegantly printed business card.[break][break]

What was the point of employing a personal stylist for "enormous events" if one did not like their work enough to use them for more minor ones? That seemed odd to Yumi. And if Summer was so particular that she would learn how to do everything herself — not just clothing but hair and makeup — then what was her real reason for offering the position to Yumi?[break][break]

The black-haired woman scanned the business card with dark eyes that revealed nothing of her thoughts. Her smile never wavered as she stowed it away into her clutch purse. "I'll certainly think on it, Miss Corleone," she said.[break][break]

Between friends, Summer's question about shops would have been innocent. But considering the context and the cutthroat nature of fashion, Yumi considered her words carefully.[break][break]

"Oh, just little boutiques here and there. When it comes to this business, you have to cast a wide net. Thankfully, the quality in this city's fashion district is quite high. The competition is, too. It's quite exhilarating."

Summer hoped she truly did consider. If Yumi Hasegawa worked with her, not for her, she could imagine that they might become an unstoppable duo. She had business expertise, and Yumi had schooling in fashion. It would be much better for her business-wise to hire someone with that experience rather than run a shop on her opinions and buying out clothes alone.[break][break]

Not to mention, they'd have competitors with personal designers as well.[break][break]

"I understand. I wish you the best of luck on hearing back. Do keep me in mind, though," she added with a wink.[break][break]

"Do you have any pictures of your work? I'd love to see more of it after the show."
