Flippers and Clippers was a daft name, Yumi thought as she stepped through the front door of the Pokémon grooming salon, her Purrloin cradled in her arms. Perching her designer sunglasses atop her head, she gave the parlor's interior a quick sweep with violet eyes. Brightly lit, clean, tidy — it would suffice.[break][break]

She quickly crossed the room to stand before the man who'd greeted her. Like most other citizens in Slateport City — no, in Hoenn — he did not stand out to her at all. For that matter, neither did the other employee, who hovered nearby, watching them.[break][break]

Inwardly, Yumi sighed, appalled by the dismal state of everything.[break][break]

"Yumi Hasegawa," she said instead, by way of introduction. The sharpness of her tone suggested a woman used to making demands, not conversation. "I have an appointment at 3:30 for my Purrloin, Itazura."[break][break]

The Pokémon in question meowed mildly, though his gaze assessed the stranger with a keen criticality.

Upon the man's entrance, Yumi automatically assumed he was the proprietor. Her sharp gaze conducted a brief review of his appearance, noting that his clothing was tailored exactly to his figure and that his accessories — shoes, belt, tie, watch — were all of fine make. Satisfied, she set her initial opinion of him higher than average on her personal scale.[break][break]

"I'm selling," the woman replied, rummaging in her bag for a small jewelry box, its surface covered in a rich, dark red velvet. Manicured fingers painted with nail polish of a slightly brighter red pried open the box, revealing a pair of earrings. They were identical, each one sporting a large blue sapphire surrounded by smaller diamonds in an elegant pattern.[break][break]

Yumi had debated long and hard about selling this particular pair of earrings. She had received them as a gift from her grandfather on her eighteenth birthday. He had declared her a woman then, and women deserved diamonds. And a part of Yumi, sentimental fool that she was, was loath to let go of such a precious gift from the man who had doted on her when her own parents had not.[break][break]

But she needed the money. Badly. And each earring alone cost at least 20,000 PD.

Ugh, don't talk to me about regrets. Only guilty people have regrets. But if I did die right now, I'd be fucking pissed I wouldn't get the chance to give my family the big middle finger by being more successful than they ever expected. Whatever. If I die, I'll come back as a Froslass to haunt their asses.
SURVEY #2: "What's your favorite article of clothing or accessory, or what do you wear the most often?"

Ohhhh Arceus, don't get me started. Want me to list them all by brand? Or by season? By category? Nevermind, let me just share my fashion account on Instagram with you.

Hmm, you know, I'd like an Ultra Beast of my own. I'd definitely try to capture one. Or whatever it takes to own one.

I don't have any loved ones. I thought I did, but nope, they showed me exactly what they thought about me. They can rot in all the hells for all I care. Now, a beloved Pokémon is a different story. I'd be so pissed.

Shopping, obviously. Reading fashion magazines. I love browsing runway looks online. Fashion is just so important. People think it's vain to be interested in clothes, but one thing no one likes to admit is they'll judge the shit out of you depending on what you wear. First impressions are everything. If you look like a slob, you're probably a slob in another area of your life. And if that hurts your feelings, that's your problem, not mine.
SURVEY #6: "What do you find attractive? What kind of physical attributes, personality traits, or other features of a person stand out to you?"

Tall, dark, and handsome, obviously. They have to be as attractive as me. A good sense of style is a must, too. I can't be seen on the arm of an unkempt disaster. Be real.

Anywhere with glam and alcohol.

I really enjoy the way the chrysanthemums in my family's courtyard smelled. It reminds me of being a kid again. But nothing beats my favorite perfume: amber, a hint of warm musk, saffron, myrrh, with some almond and cardamom in there too. And lotus.

The trick with perfume is that a woman shouldn't switch between different kinds. Pick one and wear it forever. It will remind people of you, like a statement.

Ummm, because they're Pokémon? I own them because I want to.

When Yumi had received the summons to attend the Team Rocket summit in Sootopolis, she had not known what to expect. But lowest on that list was to see , of all people, standing on the steps of the plaza alongside other high-ranking Rocket administration. Yumi had not had an opportunity immediately after the meeting to speak with the redhead, but that was not going to stop her.[break][break]

Reaching out to the Beast afterward had not been difficult to do at all; in fact, high-ranking Rockets were surprisingly available. Yumi and Lex arranged to meet in the submarine docked at Sootopolis, which is exactly where the former headed on that warm September day.[break][break]

Suffice to say, the courtyard where they had agreed to meet was nothing like Yumi had ever seen before. Whatever technology and Pokémon abilities were required to engineer such a location within a submarine were beyond her. She merely stood at the courtyard's entrance, wide eyes soaking in the astounding beauty of the place.[break][break]

It reminded her of the courtyard at home, which was exactly where she and Lex had first met, all those years ago.[break][break]

Yumi proceeded onto the green, sweeping her violet gaze across the space in search of her old, old friend.

Sootopolis' casino was exactly the sort of place where Yumi thrived. Though all manner of citizenry flowed through the doors to spend their money, the posh décor and expensive alcohol were exactly the young woman's tastes. She herself graced the venue in a black corset top and burgundy suit pants, the jacket half of the ensemble thrown stylishly over her shoulders. Her left hand cradled a gin and tonic.[break][break]

Yumi would have worn a dress, but she was not at the casino for pleasure. With so many hands preparing for the upcoming operations at Littleroot, Mt. Pyre, and the meteoroid, she'd been selected to help with casino duty that evening. That meant keeping an eye on the patrons. Her Seviper, coiled at her feet, would ensure any belligerent customers would think twice before causing a scene.[break][break]

They were not alone, however. Partnered with Yumi that night was , a man who seemed close to her age. She had spotted Fern among the crowd at the summit a couple months ago, the one led by , but hadn't had a chance to meet him properly. Not that Yumi actively sought him out; if she hadn't heard of him by then, he must be a nobody, she assumed.[break][break]

"Are you having anything to drink?" she asked Fern. Though they were on duty, a drink here and there certainly wouldn't hurt. Frankly, Yumi didn't give a fuck if someone scolded her for it or not.

On a more brisk than usual day in November, Yumi traveled the short distance from Slateport City to its northerly neighbor, Mauville, for very specific business. Taking a taxi, she arrived at a very peculiar shop within the indoor city that stood out like a sore thumb amid the more modern architecture surrounding it. Fraser's Fine Goods, said the sign.[break][break]

Yumi hesitated before entering. She had never been inside an antique shop and had no idea what to expect; moreover, she did not know what sort of man the owner was. Her roommate had described him as a 'dreamboat' but offered no other hints. Considering the sort of men Mei spent her time with, Yumi wondered what, exactly, constituted a 'dreamboat' in the other woman's mind.[break][break]

Absently, Yumi twirled the golden ring around her left index finger. Designed for a woman's hand, it nevertheless bore a wide, flat face engraved with her family's crest: a stylized chrysanthemum in full bloom, surrounded by a solid, circular border. Then she gave a small exhale and walked through the front door.[break][break]

"Hello?" she called out, her eyes sweeping what she could see of the interior, seeking the proprietor of the store.

Yumi's inspiration comes primarily from organized crime tropes such as Yakuza, Mafia Princess, and Daddy's Little Villain. Because such crime families are usually steeped in tradition and have certain expectations of their sons and daughters, her concept revolves around breaking those traditions and expectations, resulting in the tropes I Have No Son and Silver Spoon Troublemaker. She is also, deep at her core, a Rich Bitch.

MOTIVATIONS


POWER: Yumi was raised under the belief that she would assume leadership of her family one day. Though she is no longer involved in their operations or has access to their wealth, she aims to attain power and influence via some others means — whatever it takes.

INDEPENDENCE: With power comes the ability to do whatever she wants, regardless of what other people want or think. More than anything, Yumi desires the freedom to decide her own future. She's not above making deals and working with others to achieve her goals, but at the end of the day, she needs to believe she has a choice.

WEALTH: Since Yumi no longer has access to the millions of dollars set aside for her by her parents, she will do anything to get the money she needs to maintain her high maintenance, luxurious lifestyle. If that means having to run errands for Team Rocket, then so be it.

Yumi's family kicked her out and cut off her funds after she refused to obey them. They thought she would flounder on her own, but she is out to prove them wrong. The eldest daughter of the ancient, wealthy, and influential Hasegawa crime family, Yumi grew up a rich brat with access to everything she wanted. From her doting grandfather — the family patriarch — and her strict parents, she learned what it meant to have power and how to wield it. Yumi believed she was being groomed to assume leadership of the family one day.[break][break]

Unfortunately, politics took a different turn. Eager to establish a strong alliance with a powerful business partner, Yumi's father offered her hand in marriage to the much older man. Upon learning the news, Yumi lashed out verbally and threw a tantrum. How dare her father make these decisions without her consultation or consent? She was an adult; she could decide her own fate.[break][break]

When Yumi's parents refused to break off the betrothal, she begged her beloved grandfather to intervene. The words he spoke to her shocked her to her core:[break][break]

"Just do as you're told."[break][break]

Enraged, Yumi threatened to sabotage the business deal if the marriage proceeded. As punishment for her behavior, her parents kicked her out of the house and sent her to Hoenn so she could "sort herself out." They said she could only return once she had "learned her lesson," cutting off her funds and leaving her to flounder.[break][break]

They thought Yumi would crawl on her hands and knees back to them, meek and obedient.[break][break]

They were wrong.
