Yumi arrived at one of several art studios owned by Slateport University's Arts and Architecture Department. A handful of which were dedicated to its Fashion Program, which offered fashion design workshops spanning three months. The cost had not been insignificant, but neither was it exorbitant; a couple hundred PD, at most. Whatever the price, Yumi thought it was worth it.[break][break]

She made her way to her usual seat, at a high table with stools, carrying her tote bag and a cardboard cup holder with two iced coffees nestled inside.[break][break]

"Hey," she said to her partner, one Leif Logan. The workshop had required its participants to pair up, and she and Leif had ended up together. Yumi handed him one of the iced coffees. "We're gonna need these."[break][break]

That day, the last day of the workshop, they had three hours to complete their project, a haute couture dress inspired by the winter season. However, depending on what they still needed to accomplish, they might have to remain for longer. Their project, hanging unfinished on a mannequin, waited for them by the back wall of the studio.[break][break]

From her tote bag, Yumi removed her sketchbook and started flipping through the pages. "What's left to do today?"

Leif didn't often feel nervous when it came to fashion, yet every piece of fabric felt wrong in his hands. It might have been humorous under other circumstances, in a self-degrading way, that the great Leif Logan was struggling from inferiority complex. How laughable. He knew plenty of people that would get a kick out of such news.

"Thanks," He said, a touch quietly as he stared at the unfinished dress. The ribbing in the upper bodice was the best in the class, in his modest opinion. He might have even chanced saying theirs was the best, but he knew his opinion was ultimately biased. "This seems flimsy, does it need inner-lining or am I being picky?" He angled his pencil at the silhouette of the gown, specifically the lower half, which probably could use added strength. Then, he sipped at the ice coffee, surprised to find that it actually met his rather picky standards. "This is good."

Leif didn't play well with others, he was a hoarder of his fashion. However, admittedly, Yumi Hasegawa wasn't terrible to work with. That, or maybe his recent tragedies had made him less picky by necessity. He couldn't afford to be a total asshole about it all.

Yumi walked over to their unfinished project and tugged at the lower bodice, testing the give of the fabric. It felt too thin and loose between her fingers, like it could give way if the wearer moved too much or too suddenly.[break][break]

"We should line it," she agreed, beginning to unpin the bodice from the skirts. Thank Arceus they hadn't sewn the two halves together yet. "Polyester will give it strength, unless you want to turn it into a corset top at the eleventh hour."[break][break]

That would transform the dress' softer, more delicate silhouette into something bolder, changing the entire feeling of the piece. Yumi did not mind, but Leif might.[break][break]

She brought the dress to their work table and started sorting through a box of fabric already waiting there. "Keep in mind that if we only line it, we won't have to use as much fabric."[break][break]

If they chose to add a corset, they would have to sort through bolts to pull fabric, make a pattern, and spend a good deal of time running bones through at least a dozen casings.

He nodded as she agreed, sipping at his coffee. At least Yumi Hasegawa wasn't hard to work with, though he knew himself to be quite the diva in the past. Not that he'd necessarily changed, he'd just been painstakingly humbled recently and wasn't yet confident enough to show his ass in this regard.

"Not sure if that's necessary, but I'm down if you are." Leif was definitely extra enough to give the bodice a corset fit and yet experience had taught him that extra was not necessarily more. Admittedly, he would have taken control of this, but he felt the distinct need to seek opinion in a way he hadn't before. It was a little annoying for him now, as he wasn't quiet on his own opinions.

As she worked on lining the lower half of the dress, he worked on stitching that would go later on into the decorations on the top. It was elegant embroidery that he found he liked the more he looked at it. "So, how long have you been into fashion?" He might as well attempt to make friends while he was in Hoenn, right?

At Leif's question, Yumi thought back on her childhood, trying to find the exact moment she had fallen in love with clothing and fashion.[break][break]

"I can't really remember," she eventually admitted. "I always admired my mother's outfits — she was always so put-together, so elegant."[break][break]

No matter how Yumi felt about her mother since the incident that drove her to leave home, Mrs. Hasegawa had forever been the epitome of a refined, high class lady in her daughter's eyes.[break][break]

"When I was a little girl, she would often bring me shopping with her, and she'd tell me all about why she chose certain clothes over others. She never followed trends but stuck to classic, timeless pieces."[break][break]

Yumi took a long drink of her coffee, savoring the sugary sweetness of the drink.[break][break]

"What about you?" she asked Leif, though she did not look up at him, instead continuing to focus her attention on her work.
