“Guess so.” Fortune favors idiots, right? Sure, that’s not how it goes, but that’s what it implies. At least to her, anyway.

Behind her back, the taller of the two crosses her fingers. The bright light of the Ice BeamThe redhead hisses as the stakes erupt. The ice beam bounces off the shield in an explosion of frost and snowflakes. The poisonous fog rolls closer. Yakuza goes so far as to try and hold his breath.

But—even if she isn’t a battler—she spots the opening. For a second, she debates on following up with another Ice Beam. But the other person’s Grimmsnarl was in the way. A lot of the badger’s attacks would be like bee stings to the detritus slug. But a fighting move could do the trick.

Madd gestured Yakuza forward with a determined expression. “Get in close and use Cross Chop!” With a bobble-headed nod, the dark type moved to close the gap.

Maybe this would wipe the smug look off the overgrown escargot’s face.

Adrenaline was high enough to make her ears ring. For some time, she stared riveted at the spot where the giant Xurkitree had been. Her chest undulated like a sea in a hurricane, each breath bad. But a voice from above brought her back to Earth. [break][break]

“What I—?” She suddenly remembered Jason’s presence. And the fact that she’d been sent here for some weird, alien computer thing. “Right. The chipboard.” With a grunt, she jerked the thing out of place. If she tore a few wires in the process, so be it. The science nerds could do their part too.

With a middle finger to the ship’s cracked windshield, she takes a hidden ladder up to the main floor.

It was time to get out of here before that 7-eyed freak showed back up.

With the fist bump complete, the Obstagoon jerks his hand back. His clawed hands open in a firework facsimile: BOOM. It’s hard to resist the shining grin. If he notices the Grimmsnarl’s confusion, he shows no signs. Instead, his crimson eyes are fixed fully on the snail.

At Fenelle’s cautionary statement, Madd lifts her shoulder in a shrug.”I figured you might want a pep talk.” Her breath escapes in a sigh. “We’re screwed either way.” She’d seen what Fiorelli and Mint could do. As the older woman steps onto the field, Madeline suddenly feels self-conscious. There’s a self-assurance in this woman that’s tough to match.

As the gas flows onto the field, the redhead frowns. There’s no way she’s getting anywhere near that stuff, and she doesn’t think Yakky should either. Her lips press into a thoughtful line. Yakuza looks to his trainer for confirmation. A calming breath heralds her order, “Ice Beam!”

Petalburg was in ruins. Genesct rampaged through the streets. A few were piled up in twisted heaps, doomsday machines waiting for garbage pick-up to resume. It’s the first time in hours that she can breathe. She’d intended to keep out of the way. To let her incompetence get her assigned to protecting some dead-end road. But things hadn’t gone to plan.

The guy next to her had gotten shot through his mask. In a panic, she’d tried her best to shove his eye and brain back in. Then, they’d asked her to put her hands up. And she figured she probably should. That it was high time she give up the masquerade. But, as one of them reached for something, she panicked. A ball opened as her Magcargo took to the field. Bullets sank into its skin as fire lit up the alley.

But the screams she hears don’t come from these guys. They’re younger and female. Was this what the bastard had felt like setting her cousin on fire? A bullet pings off a dumpster next to her. Someone shouts at her.

By the time she realized she was running, she had no idea where she was. Panicked breaths escaped her as she clung to a soot-streaked alleyway. Now, she tries to light a cigarette.

But she can’t.

Her hands are shaking too much.

They’re too wet.

A few of her Rocket friends were starting to get suspicious. At least, that’s what her paranoia told her. Lately, she’d been avoiding missions like the plague. She was doing just shitty enough to be written off the big stuff but not bad enough to draw attention.

Which was way harder than it sounded. Feigning incompetence was a carefully orchestrated dance, and she’d never actually gone to ballet. Just told her dad that she did.

So, when the Project Tower stuff dropped, the redhead quickly volunteered. This training stuff probably wouldn't actually hurt anybody. And it was easy to slip on a mask. She wore one every day.

A hand rose in greeting to her partner. Any thoughts of a verbal follow-up ended as the sign language began. Madd settled for an awkward nod. Hopefully, this doesn’t impact communication too much. As the choice is laid out before them, the redhead chews at her cheek. It was either going up against Fiorelli’s begrudging escargot or fighting the laser eyes bird.

During the pause, Yakuza moves to introduce himself to the Grimmsnarl. He offers up a beefy fist for a bump.
“Sure.” His trainer finally says with a shrug. “I can handle a slug.”

At least the bug couldn’t fly.

That stuff was annoying.

She figured knowing it was the guy she came to see would have the opposite effect. That she’d sigh in relief and the pounding in her chest would drop to a hum. But, if anything, things got worse. That relieved noise clogged her throat like a tub’s stopper, refusing to go up or down. A hand rose in silent greeting as the redhead offered a stilted nod.

She waited a moment to see who was joining him. Madd was surprised when nobody did. Is this guy stupid?

Though not much shorter than Ollie, she didn’t feel like it. Defensively, she crossed her arms across her chest. Behind the mask, she forced on her best tough-guy expression. Which wasn’t actually visible. Still, maybe part of that distrust came across. Don’t act like this shit is going to be free, Stuff like this always comes at a cost. Probably want her to sell out her friends out like some snake.

Still, that warmth seemed pretty authentic. She didn’t see anything shift in his eyes. And, no one jumped out the bushes with sniper rifles. “Yeah.” The woman admitted with a nod. “That’s me.”

With a final glance at the bushes—as if she would see Cillian Quinn hiding there—the ginger followed Ollie. Her thick boots leave imprints in the loose dirt around them. “Sure.” A backward thumb jerked toward her Obstagoon. “You mind the muscle tagging along?”

The Harm of a Plant [Navy]

The redhead sighs. “There goes my guess.” Orange eyes bounce from its dark belly to its steel frame. Not steel or dragon type, huh? Her hands curl into fists as she peers up irritably at the thing. “Nature really likes screwing with us, huh?” That was why there were ghosts that stole kids and dog's with breath hot enough to curse you.

Ping! Tink! The rocks hit against the dragon’s exoskeleton; the sound reminds her of rain on a metal roof. It definitely doesn’t sound devastating. Still,if she squints, Madd figures she can make out a few dents. “Good job, Yak-Attack.” The badger turns to grin at her and almost stumbles into one of the pits he made. “Just try not to take the rocks out from under us next time.” At least the badger has the decency to seem embarrassed.

Still, the rocks give the dragon something to bite while her companion decides to do a—uh—something. A sudden burst of pink caught her attention. “I know men like their toys, but is this really the time for—” The words a magical girl sequence’ go unsaid as the Aegislash transforms. The cross-blade twists into a butterfly. A fairy-type, then? Up goes a copper brow. “I thought you said it wasn’t a dragon?”

Then, her and Yakuza find themselves in the figurative spotlight (because Aegislash is a literal one). Her heart plummets as the three beams come toward them. A Tri-Attack? “Yakuza!” The badger threw his trainer an incredulous look. Are you fricking kidding me!? His face said. He stopped his brief retreat as the electricity prompted his fur to stand on end. “Obstruct!”

With a nod, he jumped in front of the Aegislash. His arms crossed as a shield rose around him. “GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!” As the beam met the shield a strange energy ricocheted back. These dark, Eldritch claws swiped away the armor like a colony of drill-bit wielding mosquitoes.

“You're up, Navy!”

If she could hear his thoughts, Madd might have cracked a joke about Galar. Maybe winked and reminded him that certain parts of him disagreed. But, instead, she just laid her hand in an open palm. A secretive, surprisingly feminine smile snuck onto her face. This was worth the money either way.

Yakuza seemed nervous as Gerry climbed into the pen. He leaned away, as if expecting Gerry to come flying at him. “Stop being such a worrywart.” His trainer chided with a cheeky grin. “I doubt the old guy can do much damage these days.” But the badger’s merlot eyes just strained back to the wall of pictures behind the pen. Back then, Burt looked more like a demon than a lawn ornament.

As Gerald climbed in, the bull turned away. An ear gave a single, irritable flick as the Tauros focused on his meal. In the mirror at the bar’s back, he watched as Gerald settled into place below his ruff. “Hey! Get away from—!” The barkeeper had finally noticed the wannabe rodeo clown. There was a noise—something between a cough and a snort. “A’right then. Have it your way, B.”

It came from the Tauros. “Just don’t rough him up too bad.” The redhead paused. Her voice rose, “Hey, Gerry? I think you might want to—!”

Before Gerry had time to process those words, the Tauros had launched himself into a standing position. Then, the old bull started kicking. First, he launched himself forward and—just when Gerry’s head would be buried in fur—he jerked himself upward. “ROOOOOOS!” Madd meanwhile blinked twice.

She was frozen halfway out of her seat. “Shit.”
