Ryuji had admittedly been tuckered out the hike to this place that was the precipice between life and death, but he at least had experience with limiting how he could put off exhaustion for a teeny little bit thanks to his days back home in Kanto. Nagi, on the other hand, looked about ready to just keel over. The redhead did have to wonder why they had sent him out here to a place that was well beyond the easy to traverse fields of grass and rocky walkways instead of like the flat sidewalks of the cities and towns in the region, but as long as he was making an effort, he wouldn't have an issue with the boy. They stopped at the overlook as Ryuji had started to set his things down when he heard a disturbance beyond them. His eyes widened at what lay before them, in utter disbelief.

A child was just sitting there, in the realm between realms, just sort of looking at the two. Ryuji frowned, wondering if this could have been some sort of trick by some Pokemon or benevolent force within this world that was trying to deceive them. It wouldn't be entirely impossible, but he knew better than to trust something within this place.

Nagi, on the other hand, was working off of emotions and quickly approaching the child with the coat he had been given towards the kid.

Ryuji had felt that some pang of a paternal instinct brought on by taking care of several youbger siblings, but he was also fairly logical. A child shouldn't be here unless they were dead. And this girl looked very much among the rest of the living. "Nagi, wait." He approached Nagi and held his hand on the boy's shoulder in an attempt to stop him from getting any closer. His head then spun to the girl while becoming a bit more soft and understanding.

"It's okay. What are you going out here all alone. It's not safe out here for you." The man said, unaware of the presence behind them.

From what it sounded like, the basic rate was pretty much the works. He was glad that he could be of some use to this stranger in the bar. At least drinking alone from the public eye had given him some sort of new connection across Hoenn. It always helped to have a connection that was good at shearing, be it from Pokemon or people. He took a genuine interest in the business, making a mental note to keep a hold of the business card in case he might need to refer somebody later on.

"I appreciate your help. I can barely fit in my own shower at my apartment, so bath times are pretty rare unless I can borrow the landlady's kiddy pool. Do you have your own Pokemon to practice with?"

Ryuji asked, ordering one more drink for the night. It beat continuing to be totally buzzed for the night, seeing as how he had a ride home. It was a bumpy ride and one that made frequent stops to chase things of interest, but a ride nonetheless. "And I've always wondered. How do groomers work on birds or reptiles? I don't think you can just use the same brush on fur as you can do for quills or scales, right?"

To say that this was quite the experience he hadn't been expecting would be an understatement. Ryuji would huff as he walked alongside his confidant who had been assigned for him to take care of for the duration of their time in this...wherever the hell this was. He wore his usual coat as the chilly air could make his breath known to the two of them. His crimson eyes looked over at Nagi shivering while a frown took over his face. "Stop right now. You're freezing." He helped the boy set his things down before exhaling as he took off his coat and slumped it over the younger boy. His shorter sleeves were shown, showcasing his well chiseled arms that boar a heavy amount of scars and nicks while taking some of the bags from him. "And stop talk like that. As long as I have anything to say about it, neither of us are going to be staying here for longer than is necessary. Just keep on going and we can find a place to set up camp soon." His breath was visible in the cold here, as Ryuji pushed the red bangs from his head, wiping his forehead of sweat while keep his eyes to the road above.

Before too long, the pair came across a stretch of flat land. A plateau that seemed fairly steady and free of any kind of hostile wildlife or anything. Ryuji looked to Nagi, then quickly was peering out around them, his boots stepping past the rocks and bushes. "This seems clear enough. Think we should set up here or keep on going?"

It had been a fairly late day at the office for Ryuji, who had been more than busy with his usual past time of being busy drinking in a bar or taking a brisk walk to get his mind off of things. This would be one of the latter scenarios, although the idea of an afternoon drink certainly did seem all the more enticing. He chuckled, taking a pokeball off of his belt and calling out an Arcanine, the canine letting out a pleased bark as they'd take a small walk together. Ace seemed to be handling the transition to Hoenn better than Ryuji had thought he would. With the other Pokemon on his team finding homes in less evenntful places, he did fear for how his two that chose to remain would be doing. Maybe it was that older brother side of him or him just being a worrywort. But regardless, the Kanto man did had worry for his team. This walk brought them to the beach as Ace would be able to race around and get some energy used up. The large Arcanine was running around at fast speed, panting all the way as Ryuji watched. The man would watch him before seeing another woman a few feet away just wandering. And then Ace barreling towards her. He cursed silently and began to hurry over. "Ace! AAAAACE!"

By the time Gisela would hear the man running towards her shouting, it was too late. Ace was near her, saying hello in his usual fashion: trying to lick her in greeting while his tail swayed back and forth. Ryuji eventually was able to catch up and would smiled apologetically at the woman. "I'm so sorry! It's been a while since he's been able to run around for a bit." He cleared his throat before his soft tone would switch to a more commanding one. "Ace. Heel!" Like clockwork, the Arcanine would sit down and peer up at the two humans. Ryuji went back to the girl and her Tinkaton with a bow of his head. "Ace is overexcitable, as you can tell."

Ryui gently took the business card in his hands, thumb tracing the surfaced while his crimson eyes would glaze over at the name of Abigail's business and flicking it between each finger. A small thing he had picked up from slower days back at the office. Hearing that the girl did have prior experience with grooming Arcanines did install the upmost respect from the redhead, as he'd stop and offer an enthusiastic grin. "I'm sure you two will get along great. Just watch out for his paws. He's an Arcanine that thinks he's a Yamper." Ryuji crossed his arms underneath his chest while leaning to his right as the festivities outside seemed to be ever present from the events inside of the bar. "What are your rates like? Do groomers have rates or prices? I've always wondered that. Usually most of our Growlithe force was cared for by the staff in the barracks."

Ryuji let out another chuckle at the comment of the countryside. He was reminded of the many summers spent with friends in the city and going out in the fields with his siblings for the afternoon because they couldn't really afford much else. It was a way to have fun and for the younger ones to burn off some energy. "They are. I miss it at times. Just remembering what life used to be like before becoming so busy all the time..." They were bittersweet memories but memories all the same. He exhaled, maybe look away for a moment to compose himself again as a twinge of regret came over him. But not in front of a stranger he met three minutes ago. It wasn't her problem, or anyone else's really.

What did help take him away was Abigail talking about her business. A Pokemon groomer, hm? "I could see the clientele that would be very interested." he said, "Those Pokemon Contest competitors would be top dollar for a groomer. And outside of that, a lot of Pokemon could use one at times. Hell, I could probably use a touch up myself." Ryuji smirked and eyed the pokeball on his belt. Maybe he could help somehow? Ace did need some comfort, and who knows? Perhaps she'd have a knack for it.

"If you'd like to practice, I have an Arcanine that could use a trim pretty soon. I'd pay you, of course. His name's Ace. We've been partners since I was a cadet in Kanto. He might look a bit gruff, but he's a big softie once you get to know him."

"Abigail. A cute name." She seemed to be doing pretty okay for herself, and Ryuji didn't exactly see her stressing herself to death over a break up thankfully. His eyes relaxed a little as he pushed his hands off of the glass and returned them to the counter with a satisfied huff. "I've heard Unova is lovely, especially in the summer. I wanted to go there one day for a vacation, but never got the chance when I was younger. Now, I might as well be married to my desk." he chuckled to himself, his right hand combing through the ponytail in which his hair trailed off in. It did feel good, as he loved feeling somebody playing with it. "I'm from Kanto myself. I don't think a countryside boy like me could have ever gotten used to the cities over there, hm?" He smirked, finding amusement in the irony of his raising versus his actual job.

But Abigail wanted to start business of her own. He leaned forward, striking up an interest in what type of storefront the girl might have had in mind. "But now that this world ending calamity has come and gone, what kind of business are you thinking of getting into?"

It was but the crack of morning sunlight that Ryuji would arise for another day in Hoenn. After a very brief morning run, shower and some breakfast, he would begin his walk towards his first day at the private investigations business that a dark haired man known as Nikita Sokolov had hired him as an assistant. He'd get dressed in his finest clothing and then head on over to the building in question. He walked with purpose, eager to begin his first real job related to the job he had from before coming to this region. Of course, there was some sort of worry about what the future working here would hold but Hoenn seemed to be much less stressful compared to Kanto in the latter days. The door was locked as he tapped the door once to be let in by a charming Intelleon. As the door opened, he'd flash a smile. "Good morning. I'm Ryuji." After being let inside, the Kanto man would quickly get comfortable and sit down at an undisclosed desk that seemed to house materials. He had beaten Nikita here by some margin and looked around at the workplace. A bit messy, but maybe a few things could be rearranged…

The rest of the morning had come and gone in the blink of an eye. By the time that Nikita had checked in, everything had been either cleaned, organized and made. Ryuji had been sipping a cup of coffee while taking a break from his cleaning habits. The pair of feet roaming through the door made his eyes glance up at the figure walking in. He rose to his feet and bowed his head in greeting to his employer. "Good morning, sir. I hope the walk here wasn't too troublesome." He knew just why so many people might have been swarming around Nikita, and for good reason. He was a legend around these parts and perfect for any reporter to get a story out of. Ryuji did know that one of the very clearly written agreements between them involved never divulging anything to the press. He had no plans of doing so, having practiced such etiquette in the past. The long haired assistant would raise his cup of coffee again to take a long sip as Nikita asked him about a case that he had felt comfortable with in dealing.

"I believe I do. This should be good for a first assignment." Ryuji handed a file to the older man. Upon opening it, the contents revealed a request for investigation of fake currency with money created by a Meowth. "Local businesses have reported an influx in the amount of counterfeit bills being passed around. So we should be able to find who's behind all of it and put a stop to them, right?"

Ryuji put a finger on his chin at her response. "Budew Wine, hm? I've heard of it before. It's a bit crazy to be out in the snow chasing legends." The private investigator said before promptly giving a smirk as he'd slid down to her level and begin to just carefully dig around the snow as if he had been currently been with the woman from the start. His breath rang cold in the air while the red locks of hair bounced around as he dug into the snow. "So let's go dig in the snow, chasing legends together. I'm Ryuji, and this is Ace." The Arcanine let out a deep, elated woof in response, his massive paws eagerly digging into the ground below.

"It looks like he's just as eager as you two are."

Ryujin's foot gently tapped the wall underneath the bar as he mused with the woman's response. He had always been particular about drinks. It came with the combination of working as a bartender and being a perfectionist. While he could be anal about the drinks and mixtures that were made, only a fool would pass up a good drink, even if it was lacking in how it could be improved. But hey, alcohol was meant to be enjoyed with people, not taken for oneself while they complained for hours on end. The conversation appeared to have gotten off on the right foot as the crimson locked man leaned on the counter while facing the blonde.

Ah, relationships. The dread of many a heart. But something bad must have happened for it to be the start of the year and to break it off so suddenly. "Mm. Sorry to hear it." Ryuji said while his finger idly traced around the rim of the glass, "I can't imagine what you're thinking and going through right now, but just a word of advice: Don't blame yourself. Sometimes it just doesn't work out the way we think it will. It will get better as the days go by." Maybe it was just he needed to hear that part himself, or it was a cry for help that slipped through his lips, but Ryuji added in that last part and would watch her in silence. She looked up at him while he seemed a tad concerned for her, though not enough to intrude on her personal mental bubble.

She jokingly flirted with him as he exhaled with a small chuckle. "Likewise. But I can settle for being a stranger with good conversation for now." The man sat up and would part the red bangs from his face, crimson eyes filled with warmth beaming at the woman. "Speaking of which, I'm Ryujin. It's a pleasure to meet you." He took a moment to finish off the last of his drink, enjoying what sliver of pulp remained before pushing the glass away from him. Ryu knew his limits and wasn't one for getting anything past a little buzz except in those exceedingly rare cases. Once finished, his hands rested on the counter while he devoted his attention to the other woman in full.

"How long have you been in Hoenn for? I've been here for six years and it still feels like I'm on month one. Never a dull moment."

It had been an uneventful day so far, with the man taking a moment to enjoy a comforting walk in the woods with the company of his Arcanine. The fire pokemon had been fairly restless as of late, no doubt from the time they had begun to sit inside all day compared to Kanto. Ryuji did try his best to take some time for them to set aside and exercise a little. His doctor had always said it was good for his mental health, but he never really did see the benefit to it. So it came by some luck that he stumbled upon quite the sight: a girl and her Espeon out digging in the forest. Ryuji watched for a second before that hero in him would make him stop and walk over.

"Did you lose something?" The man asked in this thick Kanton accent, his long and messy ponytail bouncing behind him as he made his way over. "If you're trying to dig for something, Ace and I can help."

It was the end of the year and the beginning of a new chapter for everybody of Hoenn, yet the lonesome private investigator would exhale as the cocktail in his hands would sit idle. Ryuji's worries were ever present in the maelstrom that was his mind. The redhead let his thoughts wander about as he thought about his family. Would he ever see them again? Had they escaped Kanto? Maybe he should have escaped the call of duty that day to go with them. But at the same time, he had taken a vow to protect the population of the region. By doing so, he was putting himself before his duty. It was a cycle of thought that went on and on in his head. The same one that had kept him up at night. He exhaled, needing solace somewhere.

The woman to his right looked just as moody as he did, as he gave her a once over. She looked younger than him, or at least so he thought. Despite only being twenty six, Ryuji could pass for somebody in their late twenties. But, he just needed to get his mind off of what was stressing him out. His eyes went to their glasses, filled with the same drink that had been advertised. The Casino Starlight Special. The man's wrist stirred once as he'd take another long sip, the second glass of the night. After some silence between the two of them, he'd speak up while looking out of the nearby window.

"Kinda funny, huh?" he spoke in a soft yet amused Kanton accent. "The ending to one chapter of life, a grand celebration. Something that's celebrated with such boisterous ways…and yet we seem content with the company of a bottle of spirits." Another sip of the drink as he mused his liking of the taste. His eyebrows furrowed in thought while Ryuji set the glass down before making up his mind. "They could have shaken it a bit longer with less ice. The bitter kick flows better with a smooth aftertaste, but not if the melted ice dilutes it. But pretty good for a holiday drink."

It was an odd way to start up a conversation, but Ryui soon turned his head towards the blonde and gave a soft smile. "In less weird topics though, is everything alright? You look like something's on your mind."

RUNNING FROM THE PAST IS A LOSING GAME

IT NEVER BRINGS YOU GLORY


RYUJI is a wanderer by heart, somebody that you can count on when the going gets tough. The Kanto native, though displaced, has found his life in Hoenn to be filled with things to do, faces to memorize, and people to serve. Since being hired as part of NIKITA SOKOLOV's private investigation business as an assistant, RYUJI'S looked far more well dressed than usual. He's taken a liking to the work, even if it involves a good amount of babysitting a man twice his age.

PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE

WHAT CAN BE LOOKED UP


On his own, RYUJI'S made a bit of a name for himself in the public's eyes. Some might know him from his many stints as a bar tender across Hoenn, while more may have seen him as a waiter in the finest of cafes. Regardless, he's been around.

  • RYUJI is currently employed at NIKITA SOKOLOV'S private investigation firm as an assistant. He's usually the one to do the clerical work and manage the guest facing relations.
  • His Arcanine has a habit of barking in the middle of the night and waking up neighbors.
  • He has a crippling addiction to vanilla flavored sweets.

LEAGUE KNOWLEDGE

POINTS OF INTEREST FOR THE LEAGUE FACTION


  • RYUJI is a former member of the Kanto Police Force. Before the Rocket takeover, he was on track to become a Detective but has resigned to civilian life after his arrival in Hoenn.
