After Nikolaj and Camila had thrown five darts each, more of his balloons were popped compared to hers. The gangly teenager running the game congratulated Nikolaj and handed him a plush toy of a Wigglytuff.[break][break]

"I think Sasky would love this," the man said as he and his wife walked away from the stall. Tucking the stuffie under one arm, he wrapped his other arm around Camila's shoulders. "And I'll give you your consolation prize when we get home," he added, murmuring into her ear.[break][break]

The couple spent the next hour wandering through the funfair, playing more games and snacking on cheap, sugary food. Eventually, they reached the other end of the park where the Ferris wheel turned. Night had fallen, and the ride's colorful lights made a beautiful, pulsating display against the dark backdrop of the sky.[break][break]

Nikolaj and Camila climbed into the next oncoming carriage and took the seat beside each other, the former automatically resting his arm along the back of the seat to encircle the latter's shoulders.[break][break]

"Did you have fun tonight?" the man asked before placing a soft kiss on his wife's head.

A grin spread across Nikolaj's face when he looked upon the game. He used to play darts when he was younger and had gotten decent at it before his life had taken a dramatic turn. That had been over twenty years ago, but perhaps he still had some skill.[break][break]

Of course, Camila had the advantage since she possessed two eyes compared to his one. But the loss of his other eye had also happened over twenty years ago; he'd grown accustomed to the handicap a lack of depth perception brought with it. And he'd gotten good at working around it.[break][break]

"You're on," Nikolaj said to his wife, stepping up to the stall. After paying 2 PD so each of them could play, he picked up the first dart, aimed, and let it fly.[break][break]

When Camila looked about to vomit, Nikolaj scrambled to help her, holding her steady. The smell that hit him was awful, but he ignored it. His girlfriend needed him.[break][break]

"I can't sleep knowing you're hurting like this, Cami," he said, though he didn't know how else he could help her. Maybe he could sneak down into the kitchen for a glass of water.[break][break]

Then she asked for her medicine bag, a thought that hadn't occurred to him. But he didn't immediately leave her, instead helping her to stand. Once he was sure she wasn't going to collapse onto the bathroom floor again, he slowly released his grip on her and returned to the bedroom. He snatched her bag from where she always kept it and was at her side again in a few heartbeats.[break][break]

Nikolaj unzipped the bag with the full intention of helping Camila with whatever diagnosis or treatment she planned to perform on herself. "What do you need?"

Now that he was much closer to the stranger and the accompanying Pokémon, Nikolaj could see the latter for what it was: a Gholdengo. His life being what it was, he hadn't had the opportunity to familiarize himself with the Pokémon of other regions; only with the opening of the strange rifts had he started to learn what all of them were.[break][break]

"Good morning," Nikolaj greeted the other man, his tone gruff but not aggressive. "Not many people usually come all the way out here. What brings you to Oldale?"[break][break]

A huge number of tourists and League officials had flocked to the Silent Icelands from late November to mid-December, but very few had visited recently. The novelty had worn off, Nikolaj supposed.[break][break]

His Steelix turned away from the gathering, her attention suddenly arrested by an approaching Lapras. She lashed out at the Ice-type with IRON TAIL, granting her trainer a chance to throw a Pokéball at the wild Pokémon.

Movement on the far end of the path caught Nikolaj's eye, a young woman and a deer-like Pokémon. He immediately stood, putting aside the cigar in an ashtray beside the chair, and walked to the top of the porch's short set of stairs.[break][break]

Sure enough, Saskia was rushing toward him as quickly as her heavy backpack allowed. Grinning widely, Nikolaj stepped down to greet her, arms spread wide. When she collided into him, he squeezed her in a massive bear hug.[break][break]

"And you are a sight for sore eyes, dochka," he said, meaning it.[break][break]

Two weeks ago, he'd left a voicemail on his daughter's phone saying goodbye, not knowing if he would ever see her again after the end of the world. "Be good, and be safe. Your mother and I love you. And Saskia… I'm proud to be your father," he had said before hanging up.[break][break]

Against all odds, he'd made it through the perilous day to hug his child again.[break][break]

Releasing her at last, he held her at arm's length. She looked hale and whole, a relief. "How was your trip?" he asked.

By Arceus, she was cute. Nikolaj couldn't help the amused smile that split his face as she booped his nose with a finger. Maybe the mascot ears and matching shirts were embarrassing, but damn it, his wife was having a good time already.[break][break]

"Anywhere you want," he said as they began to meander deeper into the funfair. "The Ferris wheel's pretty and we might get good views. You want to head up there?"[break][break]

Of course, it was on the other side of the fair, so they'd pass by all manner of booths and games before reaching it. Nikolaj was content enough to walk and observe the other guests, but surely Camila would want to play something and win a prize. Maybe he could get something for her and also for Saskia. Women love plush animals, after all.

A noise from the bathroom stirred Nikolaj from his sleep. Almost immediately, he noticed that Camila's side of the bed was empty and growing cold. He sat up and looked around the small bedroom, though with how dark it was, he could barely see anything.[break][break]

Two weeks had passed since that fateful day in Littleroot Town. Nikolaj still dreamed about the events he'd witnessed: Groudon's immense power, the sinkhole, the burning buildings, Dialga, the strange man with the Unowns. He didn't consider them nightmares — they were nowhere near as bad as his other dreams — but they bothered him all the same. Exhausted him. Even after his physical wounds healed, he felt fatigued just thinking about what had occurred.[break][break]

Old age was a killer.[break][break]

There was good news, however. His little Saskia was coming home, for good this time. The last time Nikolaj had seen his daughter was during the winter holidays, then she'd rushed back to Sinnoh once more. It pained him to think she enjoyed living away from home than with her parents, but that long distance was finally coming to an end.[break][break]

Nikolaj sat in the rocking chair on the front porch of their house — Saskia's childhood home. He wore his usual clothes: a white tank top under a flannel shirt, old jeans, his trusty boots. The winter chill brought on by ultra wormhole radiation had prompted him to put a jacket on, but the cold was nothing like Sinnoh's, so he felt plenty warm.[break][break]

And he was smoking a cigar, as usual. Saskia would be used to it. Though he avoided smoking in her presence when she was still a child, the smell of tobacco always lingered on him. Car grease, old leather, and fresh coffee, too. Familiar scents of home.

The Silent Icelands — a fitting name for the desolate fields and their sobering residents, the multitude of Pokémon frozen in place without any hope for rescue. Ever since the area had turned into a wintry grave, Nikolaj skied its expanse every few days, searching for any indication of change to report back to the Ranger HQ in Oldale.[break][break]

Besides, he liked the chill. It reminded him of home.[break][break]

Nikolaj passed several of the living statues, his Steelix matching his pace. The man expected the two of them to be the only souls out on the snowy fields. But they weren't, not on that day. He spotted a figure ahead, moving steadily along the icy slopes.[break][break]

Another person might have called out to hail the other traveler. Instead, Nikolaj's Steelix did the talking, her rumbling roar announcing their presence. Her trainer powered forward with ease on his cross-country skis; in moments, both man and Pokémon were near enough to see the other party clearly.

WHAT CAN BE LOOKED UP

Nikolaj was born in Jubilife City, Sinnoh and was raised by a single father, Evgeni Volosenkov. His mother, Oxana, divorced her husband and abandoned her son when Nikolaj was only six years old.
Nikolaj dropped out of high school when he was sixteen.
When he was in his late 20s, he lost his right eye in an altercation with a street thug. He will freely admit this is what caused him to meet his wife, Camila Volosenkova.
The majority of his life in Sinnoh is unknown. However, when he was in his early thirties, he moved to Hoenn with Camila. They settled in Oldale Town, where they still live to this day.
Nikolaj and Camila have a daughter, saskia volosenkova.
Currently, Nikolaj works as the Ranger Captain of Oldale and Littleroot. He has a side gig as a handyman.

Nikolaj earned the nickname Chernobog during his time working for Sinnoh Rocket between 1985 and 1999. Known for his ruthlessness and loyalty, he rose to the rank of executive.
In 1999, Nikolaj received permission from the Sinnoh Rocket Boss at the time to retire after doing the Boss a favor. Nikolaj did not share with anyone where he would retire to.

Some of the atrocities Nikolaj committed as a member of Team Rocket include the trafficking and murder of women and children. While he has confessed all of his crimes to Camila, he keeps them a secret from everyone else in his life, including his child(ren).
Unbeknownst to Nikolaj, he has an older bastard son (mid-20s) from his relationship with an ex-girlfriend. He broke off their relationship before he knew she was pregnant.
