The Silent Icelands — a fitting name for the desolate fields and their sobering residents, the multitude of Pokémon frozen in place without any hope for rescue. Ever since the area had turned into a wintry grave, Nikolaj skied its expanse every few days, searching for any indication of change to report back to the Ranger HQ in Oldale.[break][break]

Besides, he liked the chill. It reminded him of home.[break][break]

Nikolaj passed several of the living statues, his Steelix matching his pace. The man expected the two of them to be the only souls out on the snowy fields. But they weren't, not on that day. He spotted a figure ahead, moving steadily along the icy slopes.[break][break]

Another person might have called out to hail the other traveler. Instead, Nikolaj's Steelix did the talking, her rumbling roar announcing their presence. Her trainer powered forward with ease on his cross-country skis; in moments, both man and Pokémon were near enough to see the other party clearly.

Where some favour skiing, the banker finds that this portion of the Silent Iceland is particularly easy to traverse on a snowboard... and so does his Pokémon. The Gholdengo seems to almost shimmer under the sun, its golden body reflecting the endless snow all around it as it climbs onto its coin-covered board and follows after its trainer.

It only pauses when hearing the Steelix's rumbling roar, and Mars does as well, putting a stop to his board and turning to look at the stranger. Strangely familiar-looking stranger, but at a distance there's no telling for sure.

He raises a hand in greeting, a cordial smile illuminating his expression.

Now that he was much closer to the stranger and the accompanying Pokémon, Nikolaj could see the latter for what it was: a Gholdengo. His life being what it was, he hadn't had the opportunity to familiarize himself with the Pokémon of other regions; only with the opening of the strange rifts had he started to learn what all of them were.[break][break]

"Good morning," Nikolaj greeted the other man, his tone gruff but not aggressive. "Not many people usually come all the way out here. What brings you to Oldale?"[break][break]

A huge number of tourists and League officials had flocked to the Silent Icelands from late November to mid-December, but very few had visited recently. The novelty had worn off, Nikolaj supposed.[break][break]

His Steelix turned away from the gathering, her attention suddenly arrested by an approaching Lapras. She lashed out at the Ice-type with IRON TAIL, granting her trainer a chance to throw a Pokéball at the wild Pokémon.

"It also makes for a good place where to find rare pokémon." It doesn't take long for the Gholdengo to deal with the Ferrothorn, circling around it on its board. Mars chucks a Luxury Ball, then returning his attention to the stranger. "Are you from the area?"

Nikolaj raised an eyebrow. "I hear there's snowfall all over the archipelago now," he said anyway, "and there are steeper slopes than these."[break][break]

He immediately thought of Mt. Pyre and Mt. Chimney — or even the range up by Fallarbor.[break][break]

But he had to concede to the stranger's second point. There had been appearances of unfamiliar and rare Pokémon in the area ever since the Silent Icelands had formed. Nikolaj hadn't encountered any himself, but who knew? His luck could be better today.[break][break]

At the question, the older man nodded. "I am. I'm Kolya." Rarely did he give his full name, as it tended to be a mouthful for most Hoennians. "And you are…?"[break][break]

As famous as the Piazza Oro Grande CEO might be, Nikolaj was the sort of man who did not pay attention to most of society. He was content in his little corner of the region and minded his own business.

The name rings familiar in the same some Northern Sinnohian names often do, easily recognizing it as a diminutive. However, there's more to it. This is someone he has seen before. Files... Pictures...

Martín del Mar meets so many people on the day-to-day basis that recognition isn't immediate, but the pieces of the puzzle are soon put together, and those cogs in his mind start turning. As per usual, his suspicions are hidden behind a smile and the politeness that is expected from the CEO of POG Bank.

"Mars. Martín del Mar, if you're more for formalities." He offers a handshake with a light laugh, because Kolya doesn't seem to be that sort of person.
[break][break]
While they speak, a Lairon catches his eye in the distance, and Mars is quick to nod towards it and click his tongue, indication for his Gholdengo to go deal with the wild pokémon. Oro does so, snowboarding towards the steel beast and soon causing THUNDER to fall upon it.

Mars is utterly unfazed by this, his attention being on the man he believes to be Chernobog. If this really is him, what will Camila Volosenkova think if she finds out they've met?

"I hear the iceland has been a big adjustment for most people in the vicinity, it's a shame about all those farmlands. Have a lot of people in Oldale taken up cross-country skiing?"

In contrast, the stranger's name rang no bells for Nikolaj. Even though POG Bank had a branch in Oldale, there was no reason for him to know the name or face of its CEO. And there was no (in)famous del Mar family from the past he had left behind.[break][break]

On the other hand, the Marzán name was one he knew well. Fortunately, that name would not come up again — perhaps not ever. And certainly not during this conversation with the young Martín.[break][break]

Nikolaj gave the proffered hand a firm shake. In it, Mars would find the confident, unspoken strength of a man familiar with decades of hard labor. No idle pleasantries accompanied the gesture, however; Sinnohians, especially those with whom Nikolaj had often associated, were a stoic lot.[break][break]

Instead, he nodded at Mars' comment about the adjustment. "It has been, yes. Thankfully, we have plenty of hardy vegetables in our fields. I've heard from my farmer friends that only the most delicate of the winter crops have withered."[break][break]

As for the skiing, Nikolaj glanced down at his skis before replying, "No, not a lot. Snowshoes are easier to use and more practical for the snowfall we've had in the past."[break][break]

He had moved to Hoenn hoping to avoid more snow in his life, but that's not what the universe had planned, it seemed. "Skiing is a hobby of mine, though, like snowboarding for you."

"Ah, I'm glad to hear that. Things are bad enough as is." Granted, not nearly as bad as when they literally couldn't leave the region or import anything, but bad enough. Whatever his affiliation may be, Mars has always been of the belief that Hoenn's wellbeing is important, even if he also firmly believes that Team Rocket being in power is what the region needs.

His gaze wanders over the snow for a moment, falling upon a distant Pidgeot in a perfect swooping pose... Frozen. One of the pokémon that had become as if ice statues thanks to Kyurem, stuck in this ice that never melts.
[break][break]
"Skiing is a good hobby to have. Not very common in Hoenn, though." At least it's apparently gaining increasing popularity, judging by all these trails with slight slopes that have been marked by hobbyists at the Silent Iceland as of late, such as the one he has been following.

Speaking of which... the sight of a Weavile further downhill catches the banker's attention, and he whistles a short note to command his Gholdengo to attack. Even if it's no legend, the wild pokémon's PRESSURE is no joke, and it sure isn't enjoyable. Better to knock it out.

Soon enough, the Gholdengo returns to him, bringing along a couple of the Luxury Balls he has thrown. Mars takes them from Oro.

Nikolaj could not help but grace Mars with a thin smile at his persistent skiing comments. Perhaps they were innocuous, but Nikolaj had survived this long by regarding other people's curiosity with suspicion.[break][break]

There was a reason he lived out in the countryside, away from most of society.[break][break]

"Neither is snowboarding," the older man replied, turning the inquisitiveness back on the young stranger. "Where did you learn?"[break][break]

A Klink floated toward them, its body caught in a ceaseless cycle of turning gears. Nikolaj's Steelix made quick work of the fragile Pokémon with THUNDER FANG, allowing her trainer to capture it.

Mars had learned to snowboard only a few miles away from Snowpoint City. The Marzáns have a beautiful chalet near Lake Acuity, and even though Mars' own relationship with his grandparents is a complex one full of hatred and disdain, that is a place of which he has fond memories (not because of them, naturally).

However, when faced with Kolya's question a lie comes as smooth and easily as they always do to him, backed by a Paldean name and biographies that tell the story of how Martín del Mar grew up in the delightful south of Kalos:

"At the Glaseado Mountains, actually. This place reminds me of them with all the Paldean pokémon showing up lately."

One of which finds itself faced with a Magneton, but as per usual, this proves to be no problem for Mars' snowboarding Gholdengo. No commands need to be given when it comes to defense and retaliation, and it's after a short struggle that the Magnet Pokémon falls to Oro's PSYCHIC power.
