Kaname had opened his mouth to speak but was interrupted by the sound of rustling grass and the cries of Pokémon. His hand went for a poke ball dangling from his belt, as his eyes scanned the area. If they were going to be jumped by wild Pokémon, he would be prepared for it. [break][break]

Two Pokémon rushing toward them were a Weavile and a Houndour. Two dark types, not a good matchup for the psychic types that Kaname preferred. He pulled a pokeball from his belt and pressed the sphere’s button; from the resulting streak of light appeared an Orbeetle. “Go ahead, I’ll fend off the Weavile. Use Bug Buzz.” [break][break]

The Orbeetle flared open her wings and began to vibrate them rapidly, directing the resulting sound waves at the Weavile in an attempt to frighten it off with a super effective move! [break][break]

"RUN", the word echoed in his head. So he ran, ran hard and fast with his mienfoo in tow, toward the mouth of Granite Cave. The Martial Arts Pokemon was vocalizing loudly and lightly smacking his trainer’s arms, as if to voice his displeasure at being forced to flee from a fight. If that mienfoo could talk, it would probably talk about honor and the noble pursuit of combat, the path of the warrior.[break][break]

The path of a warrior was a fool’s errand. Honor would not be the shield that kept from dying.[break][break]

Kaname ignored the fidgeting mienfoo as he entered the mouth of the cave, he had no time to admire the damp air or the refreshing coolness. No, he had to keep running; and he did. He darted through the cave and took a left. He had no time to stop and ponder his choices, he just made them on the fly. He feared that the beast would be right behind them; in fact it likely was, the chances of him outrunning a garchomp were slim to none. But he had to try, his screaming brain refused to let him slow down for fear of being eaten.[break][break]

This would not be how Kaname Fujihara died. Not today; he refused to die like this.[break][break]

His curiosity knew no bounds. Terastallization was something he’d never seen up close, so of course he was interested. The skirmish didn’t quite factor in when he asked. “Yes, sorry, let’s go…” He said sheepishly, now aware that he was currently barking up the wrong tree.[break][break]

The sudden appearance of the Beast’s Gengar followed by the Phantom Force dragging them back into the woods was… disorienting to say the least. “I- yeah, I’ve got everything.” He replied, wearily looking between his Orbeetle and Crobat. The act of teleportation was something Kaname had never experienced and it made him feel… strange. It was almost nauseating, like riding a roller coaster.[break][break]

Though he perked right up as Zev answered him about the Terastallization. “That’s interesting… I’ll have to see what reports about Terastallization exist that I can read into more thoroughly.” He mused, the thought of a new phenomena to learn about was exciting to say the least.[break][break]

“That said, I should probably make my way toward Granite Caves and join the rest of the forces, unless you have anything else for me?” He looked at the Rocket Beast, ready for his orders.

“Yeah, yeah… we’ve got to finish this.” He replied, flicking the indicator on and turning down a different street than before. “I’m taking a detour, to get us there faster.” An explanation that Kouji didn’t ask for, but necessary to keep his partner from asking questions. In truth, he was just delaying the inventible end.[break][break]

He drummed his finger against the steering wheel as they sped down the street. Were they wasting his talents with menial jobs like delivering packages or being in charge of the centrifuge? Maybe. It wasn’t something Kaname liked to think about, he preferred to just think of it as the things he had to do to climb the ladder of success. His pet project, that would blow them away, he was sure of it. “I don’t think of it quite like that, I’m just… working my up, that’s all."[break][break]

Hell. They were walking into hell blindfolded. Kouji was more right than he’d like to admit and the thought terrified him. This operation was beyond the scope of his abilities, he belonged in a lab… not the battlefield. “I’m afraid you might be right,” he murmured in reply.

His mind was racing, full of fear and possibilities. The metagross had landed a hit, sure, but if it took another couple flame charges it would likely be over. It would be better for him to end this quickly.[break][break]

He was going to speak, going to issue a command but instead his body rebelled. Waves of nausea washed over him and his head began to pound; the effects of being in such a foreign place were catching up with him. He wavered briefly, as though he was being buffeted by an unseen breeze.[break][break]

He managed to gather enough willpower to croak out a command. “Flash Cannon…”[break][break]

As watery talons found purchase against its metallic body, metagross let loose a pained grunt. That, however, wouldn’t stop it. The steel type stamped its legs into the rocky terrain and took up aim; brilliant light that was once scattered over its body coalesced into a glowing sphere that would become a shining beam aimed for the Silvally.[break][break]

It was a highly telegraphed attack but one that would hopefully have a good payoff if it connected.[break][break]

Strength. That was Kouji’s core motivation, he wanted to be strong. To be strong came with its own demands and expectations, just like smart. Being strong was more of a collar around one’s neck than being smart was, or so Kaname thought.[break][break]

“The thing you want, careful it doesn’t become a millstone around your neck.” He warned Kouji but more than that, he was also warning himself. He wasn’t like Kouji, he wasn’t chasing someone but something. It was an ideal, a delusion; it was rooted in desire. His dream was something far more toxic than chasing after the steps of an admired parent; a desire for knowledge was a treacherous thing.[break][break]

“Keep chasing them, Kouji. Eventually you’ll truly catch up to them and then supersede them. Hang in there.” He offered earnest encouragement as he climbed back into his seat and started the vehicle once more. Being encouraging was the least he could do for Kouji; especially because he would likely never really understand him. More understanding would happen with time or it wouldn’t, and either result was fine with Kaname. Their compatibility was enough to work together on missions and that was what really mattered to him.[break][break]

It wasn’t that Kaname didn’t want to understand though, it’s that he just wouldn’t be able to. Their circumstances, their lives, even their reasons were so vastly different that it would be like piecing together a puzzle blindfolded; it was possible, it would just take time.[break][break]

“In university I studied Pokemon biology and genetics, mostly. I learned about other things, of course. However, in Rocket I mostly assist others in their research, menial lab work. I’ve got some pet projects I’m working on, but they’re not that interesting.”[break][break]

He put the van in drive and off the pair went.

Route 117 was a verdant path between Mauville City and Verdanturf Town. Ponds and flowers everywhere, the perfect place to hunt pokemon. That’s why Kaname had joined Kouji, the scientist needed to build and refine a pokemon team worthy of battle. He’d spent days after that night licking his wounds and refining a strategy, now he just needed to locate and catch pokemon to test his theory.[break][break]

His mind wasn’t racing today, not like it was in Dewford town. The calming presence of nature helped; it was restorative even. There was no pressure, no missions, and no life or death scenarios to play out. Just two people trying to catch some pokemon.[break][break]

“There is something I want to try, but it’ll have to wait until I’ve assembled all my pieces.” He was being vague, in part because he wanted Kouji to be part of his little experiment. “But thanks for having me,” he added, as he followed Kouji into the tall grass. The two of them together would surely draw something out.[break][break]

Kaname turned the key and pulled it from the ignition, sighing as he did so. All they had to do was drop off their cargo, so why did he suddenly feel so anxious again? He opened his door and slid out onto the pavement, doing his best to suppress the feeling of worry bubbling back up inside him. He walked around the back of the van, stepping quickly to catch up with Kouji, who’d already taken possession of their cargo.[break][break]

Did he have a dream? An odd question, but one Kaname would entertain. “Of course. I want to research and make discoveries. I want to finish my research and I can’t do that anywhere else but here.” He sounded serious, melancholic as he spoke. He wanted nothing more than to be in a lab, working for the sake of discovery; for his own sake, even. It would take time, but he would claw his way to the top and secure the funding necessary.[break][break]

“I think everyone here has a dream… just some dreams are their second choice.” An observation on the reality that not everyone was willing to chase what they wanted. They settled for something less, something safe. Kaname and Kouji were not those kinds of people; they wanted more, needed more.[break][break]

“What about you? What are you chasing?”[break][break]

“There's somebody everywhere, too. Sometimes being under the radar is worthwhile.” That was that as far as Kaname was concerned. Kouji was likely to learn that attention was not a good thing in their line of work. In their world, the one you don’t see coming is the victor. [break][break]

It wasn’t like Kaname wanted to hide in the shadows and play scientist all day, he just knew what comes of unwanted attention. The more he pondered on it, on his desire for seclusion, the closer he edged toward his desire for control. Seclusion, to him, was another form of control. An armor he could wear.[break][break]

After all, people cannot hurt you if they cannot find and know you.[break][break]

He shook his head, rattling the precarious thoughts out of his mind and redirected himself to the task at hand. They had two more deliveries to make and then they were through, for a little bit anyway. If everything went according to plan, they might even get some acknowledgement from their superiors. A job well done deserved some manner of acknowledgement and reward, right?[break][break]

Kaname slowed the vehicle down and began peering at house numbers as he drove. “Right, we can do that. They’re close enough together we just pop to one and then the other.” It was simple enough, and left them the chance to defend themselves if they were ambushed. “There we are…,” he murmured, slowing the vehicle down to park along the curb in front of a modest looking property.

There is a sense of relief as the literal weight of another being falls from Kaname and he can sit up once again. That relief momentarily turns to fear and terror, seeing Medea in the arms of the Gallade. The fear abates as she is sat down next to him and healing dew washes over them both. This Gallade is nothing like his trainer, he is honorable, kind… chivalric even. The man who commands him is the opposite; wild, untamed… monstrous.[break][break]

The dew is cooling, soothing his battered arms and face as he stands. The mienfoo bounds to his side, striking up a fighting stance. “Fuck you,” he grumbled. There was a fire ignited in his heart; he wanted to jump on top of the other man and beat him the way he was beaten. There would be no turning the other cheek today.[break][break]

However, there would be no opportunity for that though, as a pokemon burst from his ball. A dragon that stood at least a head over Kaname, covered in rough scales and spines, and scythes for arms. It was a monster, just like its master.[break][break]

“Run”, the man says. The man’s concern was overwhelming, the fear he felt was all-consuming. So, Kaname grabbed his mienfoo and ran, ran hard and fast into the caves and away from the monster that had been unleashed.

Strike after strike after strike finds purchase against the barrier. The flashing spots on her elytra begin to dim. Her gambit failed, the knight takes the queen with a final reap of his scythe. The blade pierced through her barrier and struck her hard. A super-effective hit was something she couldn’t withstand, not after pushing herself to her max in an attempt to pacify Roland.[break][break]

So, Medea falls to the ground with a thud. Her body beaten and her resolve broken, she slips into a quiet darkness, unconsciousness taking over her.[break][break]

Meanwhile, the onslaught against Kaname continues; fists pounding into his forearms and face. Unlike Medea, he had no barrier or hard carapace to protect him, just a fleshy body that was taking a pounding. The man was like a beast, relentless in the pursuit of slaking his rage with his fists. It was unadulterated, primal fury that crashed down onto Kaname.[break][break]

The man’s rage was infectious; like an illness that transferred with every punch, it flowed into Kaname. More he was struck, the more he wanted to strike back. He was weak though, he was not the same kind of violent or strong as the man on top of him was. No, he was like a snake pushed to its limits and ready to strike.[break][break]

Kaname’s hand shot down to his belt, fumbling for a pokeball. It felt like an eternity until he finally grasped one and managed to press the button, releasing whatever beast was inside. “Get. Him. Off!” He shouted at the materialized mienfoo who immediately put its hands together, gathering a small ball of energy and launching it at the man atop his trainer.[break][break]

After the first drop, Kaname felt confident. The combination of the first drop going well and the fact they were right on schedule gave him hope that they would succeed. On the off chance things did go south, he was certain he and Kouji could handle it themselves. After all, Kouji was good at the heavy lifting.[break][break]

The houses were passing them again as they went down the street. Kaname’s mind wasn’t riddled with anxiety like before, he was calmer; assured that it would be okay. He didn’t predict any combat or fighting, why would there be? They were two simple delivery boys, dropping off packages. There was nothing unusual about it.[break][break]

He flicked on the indicator and made a left turn. “They are close together, yes. So, we’ll definitely have to be more attentive.” He paused, considering his partner’s suggestion. “Lifting together is a good idea, but we’ll have to keep our eyes open.” Kaname was an anxious type of being, but he felt it was prudent to be observant of their surroundings; especially if the two of them were to be out in the open together.[break][break]

There was something about small towns that irked Kaname. It wasn’t that it was easier to breathe or their size, it was that you couldn’t disappear into them. The places like Ever Grande or Slateport were full of people who didn’t exist when you weren’t face to face with them. It was the anonymity, by extension, the freedom he had in cities. No one cared who he was or what he did. “You can breathe easier, sure… but everyone knows who you are in a small town. You can’t hide who you are or what you’ve done.”[break][break]

The main task was done. The Orbeetle had smashed the communications relay with a Psychic, throwing it into the ground repeatedly before finally crushing it under a telekinetic weight.[break][break]

Meanwhile, Zev’s pokemon were making an ample distraction, a glowing Hatterene throwing people, pokemon, and things around with her Brutal Swing while the Beast’s Gengar was rapidly moving around the site, smashing what he could. Kaname pulled another pokeball from his belt and pressed the button, releasing his Crobat into the air.[break][break]

“Chase off the stragglers. Get them out of here.”[break][break]

The bat pokemon complied; flying on silent wings, it dove at any remaining personnel or pokemon brave enough to try and withstand Hatterene’s Brutal Swing. With the bat pokemon diving and threatening to Bite anyone too slow to avoid it along with Hatterene’s Brutal Swing, they were sure to scare off any foolish or brave would-be heroes.[break][break]

Not that any of it mattered now. Kaname was less interested in chasing off League cadets and injured civilians and more focused on the light that had surrounded the Hatterene earlier. She was encased in something shiny, like crystal. He’d read briefly about this phenomenon, it was…[break][break]

“You’re smart, aren’t you?” He gripped the steering wheel tightly upon hearing the remark.[break][break]

Smart. The word carried so much weight that it could be crushing at times. It came with expectations and demands. Kaname wasn’t a natural born genius, his intellect was something he had to cultivate through hard work. All the mindset of a scientist, none of the natural genius to be one. That was his lot in life; he would always have to work harder and be hungrier to achieve his goals. [break][break]

None of that was going to stop him, though.[break][break]

As Kouji exited the van, he exhaled and let go of the steering wheel. He let go of the feelings that bubbled inside him and turned his focus on Kouji, who was doing the heavy lifting. Two more stops left and then all he would have to do is lay low until he got his next mission. It was simple, easy. The kind of thing that he shouldn’t get riled up doing. [break][break]

“Yeah? I hear they’re doing something similar in Unova with Swannas. Although I've never tried it, it sounds super convenient. Maybe I should…” He replied, glancing down at the van’s radio clock. They were still on schedule, good. The next two stops weren't that far apart, so they shouldn’t have any trouble completing their route on time. [break][break]

“You did good, Kouji.” A compliment to keep his morale up and to keep him on the right track. “But I prefer the big city.”[break][break]

He put his foot on the break and shifted the van into drive, turning through the cul-de-sac and heading back down the street.[break][break]
