It's a tension in his jaw, she decides. A hairline fracture along an otherwise solid stretch of ground, caused by a fault line deep beneath the earth. They say Kyle's really dead.[break][break]
"Brother," she returns the greeting, ever Hoenn's shining diamond of propriety.[break][break]
It's a hot day for spring, and she feels the sweat pooling under the thick curtain of midnight hair that cascades down her back. She shifts, looping her purse over her shoulder, freeing her hands.[break][break]
"I was indisposed." The weight of the ankle brace presses against her, leaving ridges in the flesh where it bites at her skin. "A minor incident."[break][break]
She does not tell him not to worry about her. She knows he won't.[break][break]
"And anyway, they wouldn't let anyone near you that first week. Said you were still...unstable."

Fletcher stopped walking, and Delilah nearly crashed right into him. Catching herself against his arm, she blushed slightly at the unexpected contact.[break][break]
She followed his gaze, staring up at the ruined painting with open fascination. Thick dark hair cascaded over one shoulder as she cocked her head in contemplation.[break][break]
"Looks like a little girl," she decided, squinting. "Is that a...tiara? Maybe she was a princess."[break][break]
Fletcher's question echoed through the grand hallway, and the touch of genuine interest in his tone of voice wasn't lost on Delilah. It was jarring to hear him sound interested in his surroundings for once, but it was also...nice. A minor victory in the war against apathy.[break][break]
"I think...it may have been some sort of castle?"[break][break]
The League called this rift the Mechanical Kingdom, didn't they? Though it was a chaotic mess of a realm, she could see the resemblance to a vast estate. Had there been a royal family, then?[break][break]
"Let's keep moving," she suggested, limping past him towards what appeared to be some sort of elevator shaft. Moxie and Millie padded forward, sniffing the air expectently. "Maybe there are more clues on other floors."

Fletcher Hyland's chiseled features came to mind, then: brow permanently furrowed, bags under dark eyes, days-old stubble shadowing his jawline. There had always been something rather enigmatic about him - and about the vague nature of the threat on her life - but he seemed earnest enough in his dedication to her wellbeing. In fact, when he wasn't around, she felt unsettled, like she'd misplaced something important.[break][break]
"No, it's just..." Long mascara-laden eyelashes fluttered, and she gazed up at Gunner with sudden conviction. "If it were, say, Team Rocket, who wanted to harm me...the HBIC would be notified, yes?"[break][break]
Both of her brothers had dealt with the organization in the past. Would her life being in danger warrant equal scrutiny? Her lips pursed at the thought. They'd always been the League's darlings, even if she had the general public's devotion.

"I do need to pay him another visit," she admitted. The last time she'd spoken with Matias, it had been immediately after her arrival in Hoenn - which was, she realized, months ago now. Had so much time really passed?[break][break]
"Tell me about your family," she urged, when John abruptly changed the subject, focusing once more on himself. "Are any of them...?"[break][break]

She flashed Fletcher Hyland a wry smile. Releasing Moxie and Millie, she allowed the Espeon and Umbreon to flank her as they descended further into the mechanical kingdom. Moxie nudged Millie affectionately with his nose before taking up position. A little added protection couldn't hurt, after all; and besides, the two of them were always a comfort to Delilah.[break][break]
She strained her ears to try and identify any music in-between the groaning and grinding of gears. Last time, an ethereal music-box tune had captivated her; only after did she consider that it might have been a method of hypnosis. To what end, she had no idea. This place seemed to have a mind of its own, but whether it had a purpose...that was yet to be seen.[break][break]
Her ankle, still wrapped in a light brace, twinged with a dull pain when she walked on it, but her mobility had vastly improved since the initial injury. Fletcher had been loath to let her come back here so soon, but she'd talked him into it.[break][break]
She'd made a mess of things last time, and she wanted to prove that she could handle herself...that she was fit to explore these rifts like the many other prominent Hoenn personalities that had already made their way through them countless times.[break][break]
"You take the lead," she deferred to Fletcher.

Delilah finished tapping out a message to her assistant, snapped her phone closed, then slid it into her purse. She sighed, looking up at the HBIC Headquarters with a weary gaze.[break][break]
She'd been avoiding this.[break][break]
For no good reason, she chastised herself.[break][break]
This was a threat to her life, not some minor administrative inconvenience. The longer she delayed this, the more likely it became that Fletcher Hyland would be overrun in his efforts to keep her safe. She knew one man wasn't capable of protecting someone from an entire contingent of Rockets, should they come for her. Besides, it put him in an awkward position for his superiors to have trusted him with what was most certainly classified information, only to have her constantly nagging him about it.[break][break]
She'd take her questions to a higher authority, and get this settled once and for all.[break][break]
