DAMIEN RUSSO didn't know how to let go.[break][break]

He'd been that way all his life. [break][break]

It was why he still loved Frank Caffey, even through all the bullshit. But that love was a painful thing now, tainted by time and circumstance and Frank's own damning decisions.[break][break]

Fucking ROCKET. Damien was still struggling to process that this was all truly real. It felt so final. So suffocatingly terminal.[break][break]

Frank would probably never get to see his kids again, and even if he did, he'd be putting them at risk. He'd never get to have a safe career, where he could grow old and die peacefully. [break][break]

Now it was only violence ahead of him. And the thought of Frank hurting made Damien's heart crumple in on itself. [break][break]

He was scared. So, so scared. [break][break]

"Yeah," He replied softly, tiredly, unable to look Frank Caffey in the eye. He'd be able to find his own way home. For now, Damien needed space and more time to think things through.[break][break]

Damien let out a breath he didn't know he'd been holding once the truck's tires met the road again. [break][break]

Right. They were working. He needed to keep things smoothed over until the job was done. Besides, the mood had shifted now — boiled over into an awkward, tired mess. Less angry, more sulking pain.[break][break]

"I don't want to fight anymore, Frank." It was back to looking out the window, talking to reflections. Better that than to engage fully.[break][break]

"You knew I didn't want you to join Rocket and you did it anyway. How else am I supposed to feel?"[break][break]

It hurt that Frank Caffey had lied. And yeah, a lie of omission was still a lie in DAMIEN RUSSO's book. And that sure as fuck was pathetic to him. [break][break]

Chest heaving from his outburst, DAMIEN RUSSO immediately felt a pang of regret as his word vomit registered in his mind after the fact. [break][break]

"Wha—" Damien stuttered then, momentarily confused as the van began to slow to a stop. "What are you doing?"[break][break]

There was panic in his voice now. The anger ebbed into bone-chilling concern. They were in this shit together, not in either of their apartments where this conversation should have happened, but on ROCKET business. What the fuck was he thinking?[break][break]

"We can't stop, Frank. We'll be late and it'll be our asses on the line."[break][break]

Silence was Frank Caffey's response. He didn't even look over.[break][break]

"I don't know what that freak Cillian Quinn told you, but screwing up a job is how you end up dead."[break][break]

More silence. Eventually, Damien took the hint and Frank asked if he was done. God, how fucking demeaning. It felt like he was being admonished by a disappointed teacher or some shit.[break][break]

"...yeah, sure. All done. Now can we get back on the road?"

When Aris van der Veld had informed DAMIEN RUSSO about the mandatory attire tonight, he'd almost laughed in his new boss' face. Almost. If it had been Zev Harcourt he definitely would have done it, but the fucker up and became some eldritch horror creature and left his bar behind, so now Damien was a little more tempered in his behavior. Mostly.[break][break]

He had mouths to feed back home, after all. He couldn't risk losing another job.[break][break]

But fuuuuuck if it wasn't hard to rein himself in when every rich bitch in here was getting on his last goddamn nerve. They were lucky half his face was hidden behind one of their shitty masks. Hair pulled back, too, to make himself look at least a little more formal.[break][break]

"These snooty ass fuckers..." He mumbled under his breath as he walked the room, platter of drinks in one hand for their guests to take at their leisure.[break][break]

But then when one lady literally snapped her fingers at him and ordered him over like some dog from the field? Probably the birthday hag based on her entitled-as-fuck attitude? [break][break]

Damien paused mid-step. Craned his neck her way, squinted his eyes through the mask, and... mentally said fuck it, this dumb broad deserved the ass chewing she was about to get.[break][break]

"Listen, lady..." He began, his tone way too biting for a lowly waiter.

Why had Frank Caffey insisted they take a trip to the beach? And not even Salteport's beach, which was only a quick bus ride away. No, this was some remote strip in the middle of bumfuck nowhere.[break][break]

"Fuck this." DAMIEN RUSSO groaned from where he sat near the shoreline, flicking his hand into a half-formed sand sculpture he'd been piddling with, causing the quasi-form of a ZORUA to crumble before his eyes.[break][break]

"Fuck that." He continued, swatting at the numerous bugs that buzzed around his head. Unfortunately, the giant, flopping sun hat protecting his pale skin was little help in keeping insects at bay.[break][break]

"Fuck everything about this." With a laborious sigh the grunt threw his hands in the air and fell back with a distinct thud! into the sand behind him.[break][break]

Right on cue, because of course he wasn't annoyed enough already, a giant PALOSSAND emerged from the ground below, looking pissed as hell. Great.[break][break]

"Boo, get that pile of fucking sand out of my face." Damien ordered, sending his HAUNTER out without even bothering to sit upright.[break][break]

The removal of Frank Caffey’s hand was a calculated blow. With it came a wave of pain that tightened Damien’s chest even more, threatening to send him over the edge. [break][break]

Fuck, he hated himself for missing the feeling of Frank’s touch. Hated how dependent he felt on the other man. [break][break]

That feeling of pain and fear only worsened when he heard Frank’s tone shift — but something else started to rise up, too.[break][break]

Anger. Indignation. Outrage.[break][break]

All DAMIEN RUSSO had ever fucking done was grow up. So much quicker than any child should ever have to.[break][break]

“What do you mean? You could have taken care of me literally any other way!” If he truly cared about his feelings he’d have found another way. Anything other than ROCKET.[break][break]

But when Damien heard the word hypocrite leave Frank Caffey’s lips, he felt something snap inside of him. All the anger he’d been trying to temper this entire time suddenly welled up into his throat, coating his words in vitriol.[break][break]

Damien was damn sure looking at him now.[break][break]

“FUCK you, Frank! I didn’t have a choice! How else was I gonna make enough money to feed and clothe everyone, huh?!”[break][break]

He needed to stop. The conversation was spiraling out of control.[break][break]

“But you fucking did! You HAD a choice, Frank, and you chose fucking wrong!” [break][break]

“All that education. All that time working for your fancy ass company and starting your own business. And for what? Just so you could stoop as low as me?”[break][break]

Whatever his strategic plan may have been, all Frank Caffey's touch did was cause DAMIEN RUSSO to flinch and turn his head further away to the right, his focus lasered on the dark nightscape moving outside the passenger window.[break][break]

Damien didn't push his hand away. Didn't spat or hiss for Frank to keep to himself. Instead, he simply didn't acknowledge the gesture. Pretended, as best he could, that the situation they found themselves in wasn't actually real.[break][break]

He stewed in his denial for a long while. Soft, familiar jazz faded in and out as he inwardly processed the anger and betrayal and all the other bullshit that came with Frank Caffey joining ROCKET.[break][break]

How long had it been? Could Frank still back out somehow? Maybe if he begged, said it was a short-sighted mistake? Would Cillian Quinn ever even consider releasing someone once he had his fangs sunk into them?[break][break]

Fuck.[break][break]

If he looked over, Frank might be able to see Damien's face, misty-eyed and dour, reflected in the window as he finally spoke up and asked,[break][break]

"Why?"

Damien reached a hand toward the center dash, attempting to turn on the radio in an effort to tune out the fucking bastard beside him.

Of course that had probably been a lie, too. It had to be a front for some ROCKET bullshit. It was so obvious now. Why else would Frank bother with such a low level job like that? No wonder he’d seemed so disproportionately enthusiastic at the time.[break][break]

What a fool Damien had been, smiling and celebrating with his friend, when in reality Frank was doing illegal shit behind his back. He’d promised… and yet.[break][break]

All Frank Caffey seemed to do lately was lie.[break][break]

“I don’t want to fucking talk about this right now.” Damien hissed lowly, his focus still on the passing buildings outside the window.[break][break]

He couldn’t even look at Frank. Doing so would probably just set him off.[break][break]

In the back of the truck, the sound of something slamming against metal punctuated the silence between the two men.

DAMIEN RUSSO recognized the man’s voice before anything else. It was a sound that sent shooting pains through his chest, made his mind suddenly fraught with innumerable thoughts and conflicting feelings.[break][break]

Shock, confusion, anger. His eyes smoldered briefly with a fury that Frank Caffey should recognize as unimaginable hurt and betrayal.[break][break]

This tidal wave of cascading emotions happened within a second or two. Enough time for recognition and acceptance of the situation. [break][break]

Soon, anger gave way to... nothing. The light left DAMIEN RUSSO’s eyes. His face turned away to stare out the windshield.[break][break]

“Just drive, Frank.”
