Kara grinned and moved to call back Blue, but Josh was quick and in rapid succession sent out his own Greninja and called for an attack. With a sharp whistle, she offered her own idea. If Blue was going down...

In a flash, the little guy met the kick head-on, using her speed to strike back in the same motion with a quick attack. They both knew it wasn't going to do much, but the trainer wanted to keep her momentum up and the Pokémon wasn't taking a loss without offering something back in return.

Of course, as low as the small frog was, the kick was plenty to send it rolling along the ground as soon as it made contact, Kara wincing the whole time.

"You did great, Blue," she soothed as she tapped the Poké ball on her side to call her friend home. Glancing across the field, she tried to meet Josh's gaze with a grin. She knew she didn't have long before she had to choose her next friend to battle, but she was going to take a quick beat for a breather. "This is fun," she admitted, "And you get to do this every day?"

The saddle felt comfortable and the teen had no trouble getting on. Once mounted, she gave some gentle scratches to the Pyroar's neck as she smiled at it kindly. Despite feeling confident astride the Pokémon, she couldn't actually remember riding before. Not that that was too surprising.

With a shrug, she offered, "I'm going to say no experience." Last thing she wanted was for Nala to take off and suddenly she couldn't ride and fell off after saying she knew what she was doing. Better to find out she did know what she was doing after saying she didn't. "And yeah, I met Navy in Petalburg woods. He's really nice. Suggested I go meet you if I wanted to try the gym challenge."

As she watched everything progress, Kara grinned. She was honestly getting into the silly little game, even if she didn't really understand what was going on. These options at least provided a clearer way to go and she considered her own friends.

Gubli was a ground Pokémon and he had moves she was certain could handle the fire, but it might do more damage, too. Blue was a water-type, but water pulse was maybe a bit too focused to handle this...

Leaving the fires wasn't an option since they could hurt people, so she needed to pick. With a smile, she poked the custom field again and entered: "Use Gubli and Blue together to put out the fires without causing too much damage to the nearby area." The little Froakie might be too focused to put out a lot of fires, but she could certainly help keep back some of the blowing sand and dirt.

Kara gave a sharp whistle to alert the children. Once their attention was drawn to the pair of teen girls and their plethora of Pokémon, she waved them over. As they ran over to see all the newly arrived monsters, she turned to Opal.

"Eos is adorable. Reminds me of my Rair. But you know... bigger." Now that the little Ralts was out and she could compare, she was certain they were from the same line. Which meant Rair would look like that one day and that was exciting.

Once the kids were over, she had to turn her own attention to the three of them. For the first time, they seemed to look at her with something approaching respect and she really did feel stupid she hadn't pulled out her friends earlier to show them.

"Okay kids, this is Opal," the girl said as she motioned at her new friend. "And these are my Pokémon friends." Another nod towards the six little babies toddling around at her feet. "You can play with them for a bit but you have to be nice to them. If you're not, I'll have to put them back in their Poké balls. Okay?"

The little girl nodded instantly while the boys seemed to weigh their options. From her experience, Kara knew they were bullies, so they probably did want to bother her more. Unfortunately, even they had to realize she really could take the Pokémon away in an instance. With reluctant nods, and quiet, "Yes, Miss Kara"s she stepped back, giving them a chance to run up and start interacting.

With a grin, she glanced over to Opal and offered her another wink.

Kara had noooooooooo idea what a Raikou was, but computer Josh sure seemed happy about it. Happy enough he left two of his own Pokémon behind. Which was pretty mean in the teen's opinion. There wasn't really a good reason to leave your friends behind.

Which, she supposed, sort of included her but she didn't know if computer Josh counted.

Glancing at the options provided, she frowned a bit. None of them were very good. There was an option to do something else, but she couldn't think of anything. At least not at this point in the... whatever this was. Hiding wasn't an option, either, and she didn't have a Pokémon big enough to take her. So she needed to use Josh's but she didn't want to leave the others behind.

With a grin, she poked the fourth option and typed in: "Chase down Josh with all the Pokémon he left behind."

The words made the girl give a little jump as she seemed to come to her senses. The tableau in front of her was weird, but if she was honest it was mostly the surprise of running into someone that was shocking. It had been a couple of days since she met Navy, and since then, and returning to the forest, she hadn't seen another soul.

And now here one was with a bunch of Pokémon.

"Ah... yeah. Yeah, I'm okay. Arrrrre you?" Probably a silly question, Kara admitted to herself, but for all she knew someone here was in trouble. Not that her and Arua would be able to do much. So far she had learned pretty well that when it came to big Pokémon it was better to run away right now.

Which reminded her that they weren't necessarily out of the woods. Figuratively. They were, after all, definitely in Petalburg woods. Reaching down, she gathered Arua up and the little Riolu nestled into the crook of her arm with a huff.

Sniffling, the girl gave a small nod as she reached up to bump her fist against Navy's. Then, of course, it moved to her face where she used the back of her hand to wipe at her tears.

"I'm not... not sad because I lost. I just don't like seeing my friends hurt." She didn't like to lose, of course. It would have been great if they had won so the hardship Gubli went through would have been worth it. It's why she wanted to get stronger with her friends so they could all win more. It wasn't what was really important, though. Kara liked the battles and her friends did, too, but what really mattered to her was that they were together.

Standing up, she lifted Gubli with her. She wasn't going to let go of him until she got to a Pokémon Center. "But I mean it. We're definitely going to beat your gym soon. First though... we're going back to Josh. Show him what I've learned."

The Mauville Racing Grounds was certainly an interesting spot. Or a half dozen spots if we're being honest. Kara had come because she was maybe friends with Josh, but didn't know all that much about him and she wanted to learn more about what he liked. What she hadn't figured was that her phone would start giving her a weird message. Scratching her head, she picked up the phone and walked to a bench.

It wanted her to download an app?

Well, everything else had been super helpful so far, so she went ahead and did it and in a moment she had... a computer Josh? on her phone. With a shrug, she read through what it was saying and smiled. Well, she wasn't going to run inside, that was for sure. She considered checking it out herself, but that wouldn't be fun. Instead, she poked the first option: "What in the world was that?"

By the time Navy got the antidote administered, Kara's face was covered in tears. It wasn't the first time she had seen one of her friends go down, of course. She fought at Josh's gym and lost. Still, it wasn't easy and knowing if she put her foot down, she could have stopped it.

But she wanted to honor her friends' desires too.

As she felt the Gible relax in her grasp, Kara hugged him close and sniffled. "Thank you," she murmured, too happy that Gubli was going to be okay to worry about losing. Once she got to a Pokémon Center and got him healed up, she would tell him just how proud of him she was and how amazing he had done. "We're going to get stronger and then... then we're definitely going to beat you."

Even with the tears, her words rang with defiant certainty, sincere in her belief that this really was just the beginning.

"I didn't say hit her," Kara said as she grit her teeth. They had practiced this, but she didn't know if it was actually going to work. As the pulse blasted through the stadium, it cleared the storm in a heartbeat. Certain death for the dragon that waited within. The only thing was... he wasn't there. All that was present was a small burrow hole where Gubli must have dug in even as it performed the bulldoze. "I said hit her with everything!"

The words rang out triumphant as the ground rose. A furrow that moved fast beneath the earth in a straight line for Navy's side of the field and the final attack to truly finish the match. Popping out only feet in front of his foe, Gubli sprang in the air to tackle his opponent into submission.

And fell about an inch short, tumbling onto the field with a whimper as the poison finally took hold. "Gubli!" his trainer shouted as she raced across the field. "Do... do you have an antidote?" Her voice was pleading as she slid on her knees the final distance and scooped the little dragon into her arms. "Please?"

Kara frowned. If it was up to her, she would call Gubli back and run him to a Pokémon Center but...

She remembered Blue in her fight against Josh and how Green and Red held her back. They didn't want to give up, so she couldn't either. Which meant finishing this one way or another. Gubli probably didn't have much longer, so she needed to hope the next shot did it. If the Salazzle was a Fire/Poison type, then the initial attack had to have hurt her since both types were weak against ground. She got out of the storm, but that just meant...

"Sorry, Navy," Kara said as she pulled out the Gible's Poké ball but didn't use it. "They don't like me stopping them. Gubli, hit her with everything you've got!"

Inside the storm, it was almost impossible to see the little dragon, but his determined roar was clear. He was going to do as he was asked and the loud BOOM signaled him slamming into the ground. Suddenly the floor beneath them rippled, sending a massive waved directly at the Salazzle to bulldoze her over.

Satisfied that Nala was alright, Kara moved back to check on the Archeops. She wasn't happy she had hurt the poor thing, but the more she looked at it, the more she thought Blue could have done a lot worse. Her scolding and the plethora of Pokémon around seemed to be doing a lot more work keeping it cowed.

Pulling out a Pokéball, the girl tapped it against the bird's head. She normally tried to get permission first, but with Josh and his group around, it felt a bit silly so she figured she would capture it and spend time with the bird later. With a smile once it was safely in the ball, she stood up and moved back to the rest.

"Sorry for the interruption," the girl said with a smile as she hopped on the saddle Nala was sporting. Even if they were going the wrong way, the 'there and back' idea meant she would still probably make it to Mauville. "So you're Josh Devlin? Navy told me about you. I was actually heading to your gym."

Kara and her friends' celebration was cutoff quickly. Blue had landed a hit perfectly and started the fight off in their favor, but she was still a little guy against a big, brutish Charizard. One that had prepared. Like lightning it struck, sending the little frog Pokémon careening several feet through the air and landing in a thud against the ground.

"BLUE!" Jumping forward, the girl started to run towards her friend only to be stopped by Red and Green who held her back. Glancing down at them, she could only look on as the poor Froakie struggled back to her feet. She looked near ready to collapse from just the single attack, but Blue stood tall. Defiant in the face of everything, she would let her power out like a torrent.

All Kara could do was trust her.

"Okay, Blue. If you're sure... take him down!" She didn't know if her friend had enough left to finish it, but as she watched, the blue frog spun up a ball of water in her hands before throwing the water pulse with all her torrential might directly at the powerful dragon before it.

Kara squealed in excitement as she watched the little guy sneak into the garden. It was hard to spot at first, with leaves covering its little yellow body. There it was, though, cute as could be. The only downside? It was making a run right for her berries. Berries that weren't even ripe.

"Wait!" the girl shouted as she jumped to her feet. She almost definitely wasn't going to make it in time, but she didn't need to. Green jumped from one of the flowering bushes nearby and landed right between the little guy and the berries.

Giving a little clap, the trainer rushed to catch up and held out a piece of fruit that had been for her lunch. "Here, try this?" It took a few minutes of cajoling, but once the Pokémon decided it wouldn't get past the Rowlet, the it slowly waddled over to the girl. Accepting the food, it grabbed it and ran back into the bushes.

For the next while as she gardened, Kara could see it poking its head out now and then, and every time she waved and went back to work.

After a couple hours she was packed up and ready to go. Green and her had finished all the chores and it was time to hit the road again. Just as they were departing, the little bug ran out to join. For a few hours it travelled with them, hanging near the girl's feet. Finally, when bedtime came, the trainer offered it a Poké ball.

Eyes lighting up, it bounced up and down as she tapped the ball on its head.

And that's how a curious, hungry Swadloon joined Kara's friends.

The teen was more than happy to let the feline Pokémon nuzzle her, returning the affection with head scritches and hugs.

"Which way is Lavaridge?" she asked, as she peered down the road. She was pretty sure from what she remembered of Michael Navidson's map that her next stop was Mauville, and the man had come riding from that direction. Which since he said Gym Leader that meant...

"Oh wait, you're J--" Her words were cut off by a shriek as a creature of feathers and scales burst from the canopy nearby, making a beeline straight for Kara and Nala. On instinct more than anything, the girl spun about to shield the Pyroar and drew a Poké ball at the same time. Tossing it into the air, she shouted, "Blue! Hit it!" just as a little Froakie materialized from inside. At once it gathered a spinning ball of water between its hands and let it fly, impacting against the creature and sending it crashing to the ground. Jumping forward, the girl caught the water Pokémon and glared at the bird-thing.

"Be nice," she scolded it. "You shouldn't try to hurt others. Okay?" She felt a bit bad, since she had just had Blue hurt it, but that was to protect Nala. Turning back towards Josh's Pokémon, she smiled brightly. "Are you okay?"
