it's the knowledge that none of this was real. [break][break]

it's the only thing that keeps her composed, and keeps her from probably freaking out in the darkness. the simulation certainly wouldn't hurt them, but it doesn't make the scene any less unsettling. [break][break]

like him, the sounds and echoes of undiscernible cries unsettle her. they pull her, yes, and alluring as it is, she can only barely keep herself grounded to the simulated reality long enough to properly focus in on what she's been hearing. [break][break]

but all she can hear is static. [break][break]

it's so disgusting, and it sends a chill up her spine. it's the same feeling of a limb falling asleep, but.. visible. her hands raise to lightly hold her arms, her brows furrowing as she gazes into the gaping darkness. "i hear it, and i hate it." she squints, and one hand raises to gently rub her eyes.[break][break]

her lips of peach curl into another smile at his tone, and at the bag containing the book. ah, it takes everything in her to not express the giddiness that comes from the excitement of being able to read something new. part of her thinks it's a shame that she drove out here, because if she took the bus, she could immediately start reading it. maybe she'll drop by the restaurant to give it a good read next time, over a good meal. [break][break]

"i sound so clingy if you put it that way." the book is still held carefully between her fingers, but she takes a moment to place it back down against the shelf before tugging a card out from her wallet. maria gives the reader a quick tap, watching for that momentary beep. when it rings, she hums softly and tucks it right back in. [break][break]

her lips curl into a broader smile, and her hand quickly swaps over to pulling out a scratchpad out, with a pen between the fingers. "i'd love to see your collection~" she chimes. the cap is pulled off between her teeth, and she smoothly scribbles down her number, and a (fake) name over it. [break][break]

when it's finished, she slides the piece of paper on the counter. the same, warm smile on her lips as she tilts her head.

well, that makes things much easier. [break][break]

she'll grow used to the cold, no matter how her complaints will ring. her eyes pass the flag that marks the ice cemetery and, though she isn't one for being respectful in general, she knows better than to cause a fuss when they pass by a resting spot. think of it as that last bit of her that holds a sliver of respect for others. [break][break]

maria tries to keep up the pace, and she's grateful at least one of them came in prepared, and is more used to the cold. her fluttermane is large enough for her locks of hair(?) to lead a way, and she's grateful that it isn't snow storming. [break][break]

he asks something, and she has to pause to remember. asides from what she was wearing already - a scarf, warm jacket, warm boots and gloves - she doesn't have anything else. perhaps she was just being dramatic. [break][break]

"i'll be fine." she sighs, reluctantly still. her eyes glaze over the glass, and the distorted reflections of herself as they pass. "but are we almost there?" [break][break]

she'll bring out her litten to warm her up, later.

maria only knows that she's happy enough that someone shares her taste in literature. for the time being, she will live in blissful ignorance. [break][break]

said ignorance being the reason she can smile at this, and why she's so eager to continue talking about the novels and books she's read over the past little while. despite the initial meeting and impressions, he's quite cultured, isn't he? "well, this is a pleasant surprise." the ginger woman hums, eyeing down at the few novels lined up on the shelves. [break][break]

lo and behold, she finds a familiar cover on display - she imagines that they do this on purpose. "ah, this one~" she chimes, reaching a hand over to pick it up with a soft smile to her lips. "i had a copy that i read cover to cover, but i think it's been lost under a stack of books.." she always enjoyed the smaller titles and exploring the self published books, after all - and there was enough of those to fill an entire library. [break][break]

but it's not enough that he has all of this; no. he means to tell her that there are more books, and hearing this? she can't be expected to maintain the sparkle in her eyes, as the greed of fiction literature is a strong gremlin. "really?" crystal blue eyes glow all the same.[break][break]

it's a shame that her only response is a hum. it's of disagreement, but he can take it as he will. if it makes him feel better about himself, then yes, perhaps she's a little needy for attention, and maybe maria is a little needy for the eyes of a man whose coyness reaches her before hers can leave a dent. "do you happen to carry books by him, too?" maria asks, with a failed attempt to cover the curious spark in her gaze.

it took a little while, but she's recovered. [break][break]

she thinks. [break][break]

in the same way she's come up with a nickname, it looks as though he's come up with something endearing to call her, too - and she'll take it as a compliment (neverminding that the part of her that hasn't recovered has the urge to deck a man in his coy, arrogant, audacious face). [break][break]

she follows him to the counter and register, gently placing the book on the countertop before reaching into the bag sitting against her hip to rummage for her wallet. "oh, i think it's plenty necessary." she retorts, fingers dancing along other items before finding the little black case. [break][break]

"the book i took out isn't exactly sold in many other bookstores, you see." it's a shame, she thinks, because she oh so enjoys reading books written by damien orlov. she's tried, and could only ever.. rarely find them. perhaps she's looking in the wrong places, or perhaps she's just unlucky. [break][break]

"you call it needy," she takes this moment to lean forwards against the counter, elbows resting against the surface as she rests her cheek against the base of her palm, and curled fingers, with a smile. "i call it efficient~." [break][break]

and she definitely has no other intentions. nope.

she's a fan of continuous teasing - when she's ready for it. [break][break]

he just keeps coming at her, with the same, coy smile on his lips. just who does he think he is? just because he's managed to get her face slightly red, she's realized, he's thoroughly enjoying her suffering, and her misery. is this what it feels like to be on the other side? [break][break]

"i-i..!" she starts, and stutters, which isn't so much convincing "am..!" her voice wavers, slightly, just as she's starting to lower it again when she realizes how loud her response was getting. "not.. flushed~." [break][break]

yet the maintained hue on her ears will tell a different story. [break][break]

but it won't stop her from narrowing her eyes and furrowing her brows, giving the man another glance as the hue of midnight blue settles on her ears again. a quick clear of her throat, and she's recovered - somewhat, if you only look at her once. [break][break]

"not today." though she grumbles, her eyes will certainly continue to wander as they please - albeit subtly. she thinks briefly of what to say, and what comes to mind prompts a quick chuckle. "though maybe i could give you a call?" she tilts her head, making a slight gesture with her thumb and pinky, though subtly. "if you're going to actually help me with the books~"

one quick movement. [break][break]

and one quick save is all it takes to put the air back into her lungs, just as she lets out a soft sigh of relief as she tries to adjust the glasses against the ridge of her nose. maria is left blankly staring up at the books that lined above her, feeling the knuckles of her hand resting on her lower back while glancing to the hand that's firmly held on the arm reached up for the book. [break][break]

maria's quick to adjust herself, and so quick to catch onto the hue of embarrassment on her cheeks and her ears. so when she's stable, she raises a free hand to gently touch the tip of her ear. the touch turns into a soft pinch, and the soft pinch turns into a frustrated grunt from her. [break][break]

her? blushing? no, he just caught her off guard! it was utterly humiliating that she'd be a klutz - especially after she's put on such a bravado front. "i--" she starts, the frustration welling up, until she pauses her words. yes, a deep breath in and a breath out will soothe her nerves. she was caught off guard, that was all. [break][break]

she recovers as quickly as she stumbles, giving a sparing glance to the invitation. with a sigh of faux exasperation, she gently places her fingers to the palm of his hand, and walks down the steps, properly. [break][break]

"are you always this quick to tease?" she asks, lifting her hand from his once she's firmly placed her feet on the floor once again.

ice would be cold; who knew? not her, not when she was struggling to keep herself nice and warm. lord, she never really liked the slightly colder winters of kalos in the first place - but the icy chills are on a whole other level. if it were up to her, she'd roll herself up in a nice, warm blanket and enjoy some hot cocoa. [break][break]
