so much work for a little handful of ice. [break][break]

she's learning to hate ice - why is it so needlessly difficult to deal with? the daggers and splinters are sharp enough to be a knife. if you aren't careful, you'll find it skewered through the palm of your hand. usually, you'd want to melt it, but watching the flames sear upon a glass surface proves that it deserves its namesake. [break][break]

what, she wonders, will happen if a pokemon or human were the victim of such harsh ice? she'll shudder at the thought, unaware that the answer may be closer than she thought it was. is there anyone who has lived to tell the tale? [break][break]

"so much trouble for a lil bit of ice.." she grumbles, sliding down closer to the body and watching as her partner picks up what fragment or samples he could. maria doesn't care much for the research but, if she could somehow carve some out, perhaps it would make for a wonderful gem. it'd be a wonderful wear for the summer seasons, perhaps. [break][break]

she lowers to the ice, a smile on her lips as a knuckle knocks upon it. "mm.. shame i can't take some home." yes, it's an absolute shame. her thoughts are interrupted with her partner's completed task, and she responds in kind with a stretch to straighten her back. the offer for hot cocoa is enough to catch her attention. [break][break]

"oh, well~.." she chuckles, pulling out the pokeball to recall the misdreavus "i could never turn down hot cocoa~"

and she makes no effort to stand her ground. the ginger-haired woman walks towards the couch with a hum, taking a quick seat with one leg crossed over the other. it's plush, and comfortable, and who is she to not indulge in someone's hospitality? [break][break]

there's a spark in her eye at the sight of a beautiful bottle, and the pop of the cork off the nozzle is just as satisfying as the drizzle of the liquid into the glass. her hands are resting in her lap as she lets out a soft hum, crystal blue eyes reflecting the cup as it's being filled with the lovely aged aroma. [break][break]

"what was that saying?" she hums, leaning forward slightly to cradle the glass between her fingers. "habit is a shirt that we wear till death?" [break][break]

her reflection is clear when she gazes into the glass, but she doesn't drink it. not quite yet. [break][break]

"and i happen to be a fan of wine, yes~" instead, she glances to his glass. when it's been filled, she raises hers towards him in a wordless cheer. "but something so valuable over simple book talk? you spoil me, nuit~" maria asks with a chuckle, the spark of amusement ignited in her eyes.[break][break]

"i haven't even gotten your name, monsieur bibliothécaire~."

her prayers have been answered![break][break]

in the opposite direction. [break][break]

it wasn't enough for her to feel watched - now she had to feel uncomfortable around a large amount of.. rocks? stones? never before has a rock garden been so unsettling. the scenery shifted from the darkness, with the chittering sounds of.. what felt like white static and noise filled her head and her eyes. now, it was ceremonious silence, and she doesn't know if this is better. [break][break]

one hell into the next. [break][break]

like the man beside her, maria watches as the bundle of spirits wisp up, and out, of the fissure in the stone. it's a pokemon she's vaguely familiar with, and the familiarity doesn't put her off any less.[break][break]

malevolence oozes from the array of purples and greens, and her lips curl into a smile to scoff. "my.." she groans, hand hovering over a poochyena's pokeball "i don't appreciate the horror novel they've put us into~.." [break][break]

hearing the swirling, intelligible wails from the spiritomb send a shiver up her spine. "what do you propose we do here, nuit?~"

maybe she should invest into some fire pokemon? when she glances down at the vulpine pokemon, she has half the mind to lean down and start playing with its ears between her fingers. she doesn't, of course - she's a refined noble lady. [break][break]

still, status won't stop her thoughts. [break][break]

the will-o-wisps decorate the otherwise muddy cave, and she makes a certain degree of effort to not sully her shoes in some rubble. unfortunately, the environment isn't kind enough to let her off filth-free. when she glances back at the man who still follows in tow, she has half the mind to double the interest. [break][break]

it's when the glint of ruby reaches the corner of her eye does the distain immediately melt away, and her lips curl into a broader smile as she stares at the vein. he took the words right out of her mouth as she scurries down along with him. [break][break]

her first reaction was to pull out a small looking glass, taking a look at the large body of.. suspiciously untouched ruby. [break][break]

"i've never seen such a pure vein~" she hums, rubbing a gloved hand along the smooth surface. she has such glee, until.. she takes a better look at the crystal, and her brows furrow. [break][break]

"... hold on."

cold, damp, and reeking of muddled browns. were it not the allure and glow of gemstones, she would be thinking twice about going into somewhere so filthy. her nose scrunches at the thought, still. [break][break]

"these gemstones better be worth it.." crystal colored eyes glance back at the man, who is still being monitored by both nickit and purrloin. [break][break]

fueled by greed, the ginger-haired woman takes the first few steps towards the darkness. "mmm... it's quite dark." to be expected of a cave, really. her eyes squint, and her fingers reach down to idly dance around the pokeballs on her belt. [break][break]

the ways of high class has spoiled her. [break][break]

but if she's learned anything, it's taste. though she loves her extravagance in red, there's a charm to coherency and whites with blue. so with a fleeting gaze over what she can see of the apartment, she lets out a hum. maria didn't mean to stick to that for so long, but the smaller joys are what keeps her going. especially lately. [break][break]

maria isn't a patient woman, so her only solace is the lack of formalities and professionalism. [break][break]

after a few moments and another playful hum, the woman clad in black and red wears a smile on ruby red lips. "business, you could say." she walks further into the room, though is mindful enough to tilt her head towards a couch before she makes herself comfortable "someone's taxes weren't quite filed right, so i needed to clear it up for them." she lies as smoothly as she breathes.

what can she say? maria is a greedy, greedy woman. it wasn't her fault that a man signed his life over for a couple thousand dollars, but it was entirely his fault that he signed in blood. it wasn't her fault that a man was now panicking when he didn't have the tens of thousands in interest, but it was his fault that he thought his life was only worth that much. typically, she'd only work enough to line her pockets. if the gems were as valuable as this man claimed and pleaded, maybe she'll let him off the hook, and she'll leave this lovely man to take the spoils of his life. if they weren't, though, there's still the issue of money she wasn't getting. and thank god she's never actually run into the god damn dragon. if she was the one to face it back when it first appeared, she probably would have hightailed out of there. hell no. hoenn's had to deal with way too many mythical pokemon, and maria wasn't about to be one of the poor people caught in the crossfire - but since she's in rocket, she probably has no choice. [break][break]

ah, she shouldn't have come to hoenn. [break][break]

so she gazes at the ice, humming softly with a "wooow.. that.." she narrows her eyes, softly kicking at the clear surface "is way too much ice."[break][break]

there's a scoff in her words, somewhere, but it's more in amusement as the larger, primal misdreavous flutters around the glistening ice. when the trainer waves her hand, the misdreavous composes a SHADOW BALL from its lips, launching what should have been something moderately powerful right into the ice that juts out. the FLUTTERMANE's strength is enough to create cracks, and the pokemon isn't content. [break][break]

so they keep blasting SHADOW BALL at it.

and dressed in home clothing, as he should be. maria doesn't realize how overdressed she is to talk about a book, and a few other books, but that's because she didn't have the time to head home and change. so, what's a woman to do but show up looking well dressed, either way? [break][break]

"i just like to dress up~" maria replies with a hum, taking a quick stride into the apartment. she looks over her shoulder and at him as the door closes. "good thing i just so happened to be in the area, too" she chimes, and tells such a white lie - but like hell was she going to admit that she was around because of being stood up. [break][break]

how embarrassing would that be? [break][break]

so she turns her attention to the apartment, taking her shoes off and placing them upon the shoe rack not too far away from the door. it's clean, and sleek, similar to what she saw of the bookstore. colour her impressed. [break][break]

"i really didn't expect you to have such a fancy place~." she quirks a brow, taking a few steps deeper into the apartment "working at a bookstore really makes enough for this place?"

the chittering and chattering doesn't quiet down. [break][break]

in fact, she can swear that it gets louder. it's unnerving, and the flurry of colors each distinct voice has is muddled in a pool of god knows what. it's only the overpowering midnight blue that blares closer to her keeping her grounded, and sane. this is a simulation, but she didn't think she'd run into something that was ready to mentally torment them. [break][break]

so she takes a deep breath, and reaches through the darkness to hold onto the sleeve of a man's shirt - or the hem. whichever works, she doesn't care. "agreed.." she'd like to leave this place, if she could. certainly, there was a different scenario waiting for them? that's what the person manning the device told them. [break][break]

"i really, really hope that the next one isn't this.." she grumbles, narrowing her eyes to the darkness as she tries to maintain her fortified stance[break][break]

past tense, because the bastard decided to ghost and stand her up last minute. the audacity, no? here she was, dressing up a little bit nicely to have a nice date, only to get a call from him saying that something came up? if she had known, she wouldn't have worn the heels and wouldn't have worn a blouse and a nice pair of slacks. [break][break]

she's just about to call it a night and resign to sulking in her apartment, until the ping of a text from an unfamiliar number caught her attention. a few questions (and a very confused maria) later, and she smiles before clicking the phone off to walk down the roads of slateport. thank goodness she was already here - thank goodness the trip will make it worth it. [break][break]

she arrives at a high rise building, a whistle escaping her lips as she quickly pulls out her phone to tap in a message. [break][break]

i think i found the building.[break]
you live quite extravagant for someone who works at a bookstore.[break][break]

she chuckles in the elevator after she's been let in, humming while skimming over their texts a second time before the ring of the bell goes off. maria reaches the door and raises a hand to lightly knock against the wood, and her other hand holds the phone to send one more text. [break][break]

AN EX-HUSBAND

A LOVELESS MARRIAGE

Okay, before I start with this, I'll make aggressive hand waves at Nothing at All by Traceless. Now that we got that established--[break][break]

This is a wanted ad for Maria's (Ex)Husband. The "ex" is in brackets because they never actually got formally divorced. The reason for this is because Maria upped and left one day with a note that really summed up to "I'm leaving". She's been gone for about three years now. [break][break]

The husband is a Kalosian Noble of relatively high standing, and the heir to a company. On paper, he's pretty straight laced and a good guy. He and Maria met when they were young, and their marriage was already decided for them. Whether they wanted it or not, they eventually wed when Maria was twenty-four years old. They were married for a year before she ran off.[break][break]

Maria never had feelings for him, but the kicker here is that I want him to have some kind of feelings for her - although they don't necessarily have to be romantic in nature. Actually, it would be better if he is under the illusion of love. Because the two of them were forced to be so close, and they were both suffocated under expectations, it's entirely possible for him to have developed feelings for the sake of ease.[break][break]

Needless to say, he was heartbroken. He's gonna feel even more betrayed if he finds her again in Hoenn, acting as she does -- which leads me to present day. By present day, he's taken over the company and has come to Hoenn for whatever reason. I want them to meet again, and for that conditioned love to resurface just as he finally started moving on.[break][break]

Honestly I don't have any specifics other than "hurt them, put them in pain, BETRAYAL :hellmo:" but I do know that Maria has no feelings for him - save for sympathy of being raised in a similar way. It will stay this way, because she, at some point, started viewing his "love" and presence as currency being traded by their parents. She can't love a pawn.[break][break]
