At the mention of people dying, his expression darkened, his eyes narrowing a fraction. “I seriously don’t see what Team Rocket is hoping to accomplish with all this carnage. I’m well aware it’s world dominance or some such nonsense, but what's the point of that if they kill everyone to do that? That’s why we can’t let Team Rocket win because it definitely wouldn’t be good for everyone,” he huffed, rolling his eyes. Seriously, did the people in Team Rocket actually think things through? Or was it filled with a bunch of bumbling idiots?

The more he discovered about Team Rocket, the less he was impressed by them, and the more he wanted to put an end to their deeds. He didn’t want people to continue dying just because a group of people thought it would be okay to try and enforce their will upon others. And while he tried to steer clear of confrontation when he could, he definitely felt he wouldn’t hesitate to put them in their place if he really had to.

Pushing down his annoyance at Team Rocket and the things they had done, he moved the topic of conversation on to something else. At the question, he let out a tired sigh but addressed the question. “That’s not really the problem. It’s more about where they were placed. I have scars cutting through other scars. Old scars. Scars that are bad,” he said, his expression unreadable.

“This isn’t really the place to get into all of that, though,” he said as if suddenly aware of anyone who could be close enough to hear their conversation. He supposed he really wanted to know more; he would tell him later; he had already come this far after all. However, if he really wanted to know more, it would have to be in a more private setting.

Allowing the conversation to move on, he listened to what the older male had to say. "Yes, I heard about Kyurem; kind of surprised a pokemon could disrupt the weather pattern that much though. I mean, wasn't it always fairly hot here? Or is it simply the fact I’m from Galar that I feel that way?”

Seriously, the weather here had been a shock to his system. "Anyway, what made you decide to get into the whole gym leader stuff in the first place? I can’t say I’ve ever been interested in that kind of lifestyle myself,” he commented, thinking on how he still struggled with the idea of battling. Thanks a lot, father.

Mentally shaking himself, he let his eyes scan their surroundings, deciding he might as well make himself useful. Receiving no response, his gaze flickered briefly to the older male. Resisting the urge to sigh when he saw him distracted, he repeated the question, gaining the gym leaders attention.

As he went on to explain what they were looking for, he let his gaze wander. So far, he saw nothing of what he was saying. Then again, with the amount of people, it was kind of hard to see anything. He debated going a bit away to see if he could spot what he was talking about but didn’t really feel like losing him in the crowd.

Before he could think too much on it, Josh spotted what they had come for, and he followed after the older male. He supposed it was a good thing he was an insomniac or doing missions late in the night would be a struggle. Basically, he was used to going long hours without sleeping, to the point he wasn’t phased by pulling all-nighters. Then again, all the coffee he would drink throughout the day probably had a hand in that. He did tend to spend most of the day drinking coffee after all. In fact, he had actually brought some with him. Though if he were being honest with himself, he had brought it more for his partner than himself since he couldn’t be sure how she would fare with the possibility of an all-nighter.

Absently fiddling with the insulated thermos, he took the time to take in his surroundings. Oldale Town, a town he didn’t frequent that often, but since that was where he was needed, he had come. Now all there was to do was wait for the arrival of his partner. His superiors had told them to meet up in Oldale around sunset; of course, being himself, he had arrived early. Just to scope out the town.

Of course he hadn’t gotten any insight as to what would draw a pack of mightyena to this town, but that was okay. That wasn’t really their mission anyway. No, they were meant to defend the townspeople from the pack of mightyena and drive them back, something of which made him uncomfortable. He still struggled with the whole idea of battling, but he was trying to improve that line of thinking, which is why he had agreed to do this mission.

Thinking about someone being missing, especially a child, even if it was just for pretense was a bit weird. If he was being honest, it was a bit close to home. Though for him he supposed if he had succeeded he would’ve been considered a runaway.

Thinking this way didn’t bother him. In fact, it was actually thinking this way that he could put himself in the correct mindset. In most cases, when a kid got separated from their parents, they got scared. Thinking of kids being scared wasn’t a nice feeling, and it made him more determined to figure things out and get the fictional kid to their parents. Sure, it was just a story, but what was the point if he didn’t immerse himself in the story? He should at least play the part.

The voices around him had him looking around. Unsurprisingly, he saw nothing. That just put him on guard, and he maintained a still posture as the voices asked questions in a childlike manner.

“Didn’t realize fun had an age limit,” he said with snark. “I suppose I will have to go with a boring adult,” he said with a long drawn-out sigh. Okay, so maybe he was acting more like a moody teenager, but give him a break; he was barely out of his teenage years. Though he supposed he would probably always be a bit prickly. Following after him, he listened to what the younger male had to say. He didn’t really understand how Hoenn found itself in the messes it did, but he really wished Hoenn had left him out of it. However, just like always, he had pretty rotten luck; it was actually pretty surprising that he had been able to keep himself out of the strange happenings going on in Hoenn for as long as he had.

“Trouble does seem to just find Hoenn. If I didn’t know any better, I would think Hoenn has some kind of beacon that draws attention to it.”

Hoenn definitely wasn’t safe, and yet...

He would much rather take whatever Hoenn had to throw at him than deal with his father. Some might find that line of thinking crazy. And for the most part, they were right. There was something about dealing with his father that made him feel worse. Perhaps it was because a father was someone he was supposed to trust. Well, whatever it was, he would rather deal with whatever Hoenn had in store.

Surprises had never been something he cared about. However, he would let the kid have his way. “Wouldn’t want to ruin the surprise,” he agreed, not really knowing what else to say.

Eventually they would come to some doors that were physically opened by a Pokémon, and he would be led into a room. After giving the room a cursory glance, he would move over to the sofa and sit down. Getting comfortable was the hardest part since he had to force himself to relax, but it wasn’t long until they could get started.

Doing as he was told he would close his eyes and allow himself to be taken forever to slumber land.

Upon opening his eyes, he would find himself in a dark forest. A quick scan of his surroundings would reveal that the trees blocked the sky, and yet there was an eerie light from within the woods.

His attention was pulled away from his surroundings when the younger male spoke. While not overly common, there were still people who leaned more towards using swords and bows than guns. Pushing aside such thoughts, he would listen to the gym leader continue setting the scene.

Well, he was reckless, often having little regard for his own well-being. Even though Hideo would have no way of knowing that about him, it was still kind of amusing, not that he really showed it. Capable or not, it would still be considered reckless to just walk headlong into a dangerous situation, though it wasn’t like he just threw himself into a tight spot for the heck of it; usually it was done to protect someone else.

That was definitely not an explanation he was expecting. Though he wasn’t exactly sure what he was expecting in a way of explanation. Maybe some kind of prank. No, she didn’t really seem to be the type for that, not unless she didn’t realize it was being done for a prank then. Still, he found the idea of him being hot to anyone laughable, but then again, he had a very poor opinion of his self-image.

“I’m not attractive,” he stated, uncomfortable with the idea of using hot in the same context of referring to himself, even if it was a form of denial. Seriously, the whole idea of him being hot was ludicrous.

Before more could be said on the matter, she started to show him the pictures she had taken. He had admitted they were good. As a photographer himself, he had an eye for detail, which was surprising since he clearly didn’t see himself clearly. Getting hung up on things like his scars, or more like the reason he had received them.

“They’re good; usually pictures of me come out poorly,” he commented, looking away. It was so weird seeing pictures of himself turn out to do well. "Anyway, where’d you learn to take pictures like that? The person that greeted him was only a boy. The fact a kid had so much responsibility rubbed him the wrong way for some reason. Oh no wait, he knew why it bothered him. It was practically the same as being forced to grow up quickly, something he could only relate to so well.

Feel free to simply call me Ever,” he said, not bothering much with a greeting of his own but considering his more abrasive attitude that wasn’t too surprising. There was also the fact that conversing with others just wasn’t his strong point. Also not really surprising.

Following after the other, he wasn’t expecting much in the way of conversation; after all, he didn’t think holding a conversation with someone like him. Still, despite not really expecting conversation due to always remaining on guard, he wasn’t caught off guard when the gym leader spoke up once more.

The question gave him pause, and he debated the best way to answer. In the end, he decided to just tell the truth the best way he could. Not that he would even consider the option of lying to the kid, even if he wouldn’t go into too much detail.

“With everything that has been going on, I’ve decided it’s best to be prepared for all sorts of scenarios. Of course he didn’t know those people. Something he was quite thankful for. He had enough on his plate, knowing his father. Unfortunately, it seemed his father still had those people beat though when it came to ruining lives. Not that he would tell this guy as much.

The sight of a slowking definitely surprised him. He hadn’t really been expecting to come across such a Pokémon. It was definitely a Pokémon that held his interest, even if it wasn’t the kind of Pokémon he normally goes for. In the long run, if he could find a way for a Pokémon to help with his ranger duties, he was happy.

Releasing his Flygon from her pokeball just in case he slowly made his way closer. The Slowking seemed to notice them about as quickly as they noticed her and immediately tried to douse them both with water using the Water Gun, something Gaia didn’t take kindly to.

The partial dragon type immediately retaliated with Dragon Breath paralyzing the Slowking. Seeing this as his chance, he would immediately take out a pokeball and lob it at the dual type.

So far he hadn’t found anything of much interest. Don’t get him wrong, he loved Pokémon, but like most people, he did have his preferences when it came to catching them. It did have the downside of making him feel slightly guilty to pass over Pokemon, but he knew enough that things would be much worse if it was just left to collect dust on a PC somewhere.

Seeing a Corpish in the distance, he made sure it was too far to notice him before continuing on his way. So far he hadn’t had much luck in finding what he wanted, but he supposed he should’ve brought a camera or something so he would at least have pictures.

He had never been too fond of swimming, hating the way his clothes clung to him when they were wet. There was also the fact the clothes were more likely to irritate his scars when they were wet, due to sticking to his skin. However, he had to admit that swimming was good exercise, not to mention that it would be good to keep up his skills in swimming in case he ended up needing them.

As he swam, he would come across an Azumarill. Halting, he waited to see if the Azumarill would notice him. When it didn't, he was relieved and moved on once he was sure the Azumarill was too preoccupied with something to hear him; the last thing he wanted was to have to defend himself against a Pokémon attack. The last thing he wanted was to have to drive off a Pokémon just because they had attacked him.
