Covering his ears, he watched Shalin use Earth Power on the grounded Iron Moths, effectively knocking them all out of commission. Even with his ears covered, it was still a bit loud and he had to resist the urge to wince. If it had been loud even with his ears covered, he could imagine that it had been unbearable for Shalin.

"I'm surprised you're not deaf," he told the green-haired woman before continuing. "Anyway, I would say we succeeded in protecting Hoenn, so we should probably head back now," he pointed out as he turned to go back the way they had come from.[break]

She did have a point. Team Rocket wasn't exactly known for mercy. Chances were they would just kill a Pokémon before it could escape. Though there was a chance that the Lycanroc had given as good as she had got and had proven too much of a challenge for a Team Rocket grunt and had therefore been able to escape.

Once the Lycanroc was all healed up, he got up from his crouched position. "Hopefully whoever had their back to the wall when taking on the Lycanroc. I don't take kindly to anyone who thinks it's okay to hurt Pokémon. Pokémon do so much for us," he said, his expression darkening momentarily.

"Anyway, we should continue on," he said as he started walking. He had barely taken two steps when the Lycanroc moved to intercept. Gazing at the Lycanroc, he resisted the urge to sigh. While he had nothing against Lycanroc, he had never considered suddenly running into one and it wanting to join him.

"I suppose you want to join my team," he said, holding out an empty Pokéball to the canine Pokémon and touching the button against it, causing it to be sucked into the Pokéball.

”Albeit a strange-looking one. A paradox Pokémon that resembles a Cyclizar, I'm assuming," he told the older male over the comms. Hopefully, it would be a Pokémon that would keep its distance. While he wasn't a bad battler, quite adept actually, he wasn't the biggest fan of battling. He didn't like the risk of injuring a Pokémon, especially when it was their duty to protect them.

Keeping an eye on their surroundings, he noticed when Razz turned his Pokémon around to go the other way. Guiding Rook to do the same, he wheeled the great metal bird around so he was heading in the same direction as the older male.

Since they were airborne, he didn't feel the earthquake. However, he did notice what happened below. ”Are you okay down there?" he asked over the comms, his attention focused on the man and his Pokémon down below.

That sounded like quite a problem. A psychic type getting so close to a person probably wasn't the best idea. Unless, of course, it was a type the Pokémon was weak against. And sure, poison type Pokémon were weak against psychic types, but they were easily able to poison their opponents.

"That's okay, I might have to switch out Celestia for a bit. It's a pity I don't have any water Pokémon that knows surf and could help us out," he said, a small sigh escaping him. While it was true that he had acquired some water types, they all only knew moves that could hit one opponent at a time.

In response to the question, he frowned. "Hmm, it's a bit unorthodox, but let's see if I can get it to work in our favor," he said as he returned Celestia to her Pokéball before letting Volt out of his Pokéball. "Do you think you could get in the midst of those Pokémon and discharge enough electricity to knock them to the ground?"

As an answer, Volt simply charged forward before discharging electricity all around him in order to bring the Iron Moths to the ground.

"I'm a rookie ranger, so I don't think it would be good to focus on one type. It could leave me in a bad spot if I run into someone who uses a type they're weak to. As for being a gym leader, no interest. I don't like battling unless I absolutely have to. It's definitely not something I'm going to go out of my way to do," he said with a shake of his head.

He was well aware that his fellow ranger, Josh Devlin, was a gym leader. He didn't know how he did it. And it wasn't just the battling that turned him off from the idea. It was the whole concept of having people working under him that was a turn-off. He had enough trouble looking after himself; he didn't need to worry about other people. Not that he still didn't. He was too much of a protector type to turn a blind eye to someone who needed help.

"Hmmm, no. I could've done with you getting teleported everywhere," he said simply, not paying much attention to the obvious chewing out that Dizzy was giving her trainer.

Reaching the outside of the cave, he looked around before turning his attention to the younger man. "That would be a good idea," he agreed.

Having his suspicions about the Abra coming back, he didn't react when it suddenly teleported behind Zachary. It was clear from Zachary's and Dizzy's reactions that they weren't expecting it.

Watching the interaction between Abra and Zachary, he suddenly remembered the Jinx he had caught. Taking the Pokéball containing the Pokémon from his pocket, he held it out towards Zachary. "A shiny Jinx. I caught it when we were looking for you, but I don't have much use for a Jinx, so you can have it."

Only after he took it would he release Rook, his Corviknight, from his Pokéball. "Well, I'll be on my way now. I promised my grandparents I would spend some time with them," he said, swinging himself into the saddle on Rook's back before taking to the skies.[break] zachary stellar

As the battle started, he remained alert, his eyes darting over the opposing Pokémon as they advanced. With the Helping Hand courtesy of Midori, he barely looked away from the opposing Pokémon to give Iron Leaves a curt nod. As a rule, it wasn't good to take your eyes off your opponent, so he was sure Midori would understand.

He was about to issue his own order when the Iron Moths sent a sludge wave towards them. His eyes widened briefly, and he quickly tugged on Celestia's reins to cause her to dodge the worst of the sludge wave. Wincing slightly as Celestia used Agility to help with dodging the worst of it, while he barely reacted to any of the sludge hitting him, Celestia let out a pained cry.

"Are you okay, Celestia?" he asked, and after getting confirmation that she was okay, he was relieved.

Realizing he needed to give some serious orders, he resisted the urge to sigh. "Celestia, use Psycho Cut," he told the Galarian Rapidash.

Following her order, Celestia unleashed a Psycho Cut upon one of the Iron Moths, knocking it out in one hit.

"I don't suppose Midori knows any moves that can hit multiple opponents?" he inquired before continuing. "Celestia does know Dazzling Gleam..."

Today, he had nothing to do. He hated those days, hated days where he had nothing to do but be alone with his thoughts. On those days, he always tried to make a list of things he could do.

Maybe he could go take pictures. That was always fun. But his last project had just been finished, and just taking pictures for the sake of it seemed wrong somehow.

If that was out, perhaps he could see about catching more Pokémon. Having more Pokémon to choose from would be nice. There was also the plus of it being something to occupy his time.

Mind made up, he set out, deciding to take the time to bond with Sonic Boom, his Yanmega. He released her from her Pokéball. Like a few others among his Pokémon, she was bigger than average, making it relatively easier for someone his height to ride her.

Making his way to Rustboro City, he dismounted and decided to continue the rest of the way on foot. Yanmega flew a bit ahead of him, but he wasn't worried. He knew she wouldn't go too far out of his line of sight.

Even so, he almost ran right into her when he caught up with her sooner than he would've expected. The reason being that she had come to a complete stop.

He was just about to scold her for the unexpected stop when a voice called out to them. The voice immediately put him on edge, and his expression became somewhat guarded as he stepped out into the open.

While the trainers were going through the introductions, the two Pokémon were doing their own thing. Nyx, being pretty laidback, would allow Sylv's ribbons to touch her.

Upon hearing the question, he shook his head. "Aw, no. I usually don't like working in places where I'm not at risk of getting wet," he said at last, resisting the urge to tug at his shirt at the thought.

"A map is good, it means we won't have to trek all over. As for anything weird, hmmm, no, but the clogging could be due to poison sludge," they said absently as they looked over the map that Lutgarde had brought, as well as the notes she had made.

Her handwriting was a bit hard to read in some places and easy to read in others. Due to the multiple letters he had sent his grandparents before coming to live with him, he immediately identified the clear writing as calligraphy. His own choice of writing fell between calligraphy or cursive, depending on the mood he was in. That, in writing in such fashions, had set him even further apart from his father.

"Most of my Pokémon are fairly new, with the exception being Rook and Volt, my Zebstrika. I caught Volt three years ago after first arriving in Hoenn. The other Pokémon I've caught within the last year," he explained to the older male when it was mentioned that the Emolga was a new Pokémon.

Upon hearing the story behind the Emolga, he frowned. Couldn't Team Rocket just give it a rest? Why must they make everyone's lives miserable? It seriously made his blood boil how callous Team Rocket was. Just like it made his blood boil thinking about who could've been heartless enough to hurt Rook when he had first found him.

As a lover of Pokémon, he hated when stuff happened to them. "It's always a shame when that kind of stuff happens. Rook, for instance, was injured when I first found him. I had to nurse him back to health. I'm still unsure if the injuries were due to him having a trainer before me or if something else was the cause," he admitted.

When asked if he was ready, he nodded. "Yes, I'm ready. Unless the passengers are tardy or early, we should get there just in time to meet up with them," he explained as he moved to get in the driver's seat of the carriage.[break] Remiel Calcifet

Fighting, he usually hated it. It left a bad taste in his mouth. However, if there was one thing he didn't tolerate, it was harming Pokémon or innocents. These people had done so, and he would make sure they thought twice about doing it again, without resorting to killing them.

Josh's voice broke through the chaos of battle, but he barely acknowledged the command before returning his focus to the fight. "Push through, we need to clear a path to an exit. Don't engage in battle unless you absolutely have to in order to clear a path," he told the Galarian Rapidash as he swung himself onto her saddle.

With her orders and her trainer on her back, Celestia charged forward, knocking aside the rockets who weren't smart enough to get out of her way. Some of them tried to send out their Pokémon to stop them, but they were easily blasted away with Dazzling Gleam. Soon, any Pokémon that stood in their way was down for the count.

Jumping off Celestia before she came to a stop, he told her to continue ahead while he double-checked to see if their way out was really secure. The last thing he would want was for Josh to run into any ambushes they had missed during their first run-through in securing their way out.

To ensure his safety, he allowed Volt out of his Pokéball and did one last check to make sure the way out was secure. After dealing with a few stragglers, he confirmed that the way out was secure before letting Josh know as much over the communication channel the rangers shared and making his way back to Celestia.[break] Josh Devlin

"I guess, it still feels in a way like keeping them prisoners. I mean we can let them out, but it's our decision whether or not we let them out of their Pokéballs," he said with a small shrug. In a way, he knew what that was like. His father had proved that if he really wanted to, he could keep him confined in their home. He was pretty sure he hadn't done so because he didn't want to deal with questions pertaining to him.

Pushing thoughts of his father away, he decided to just focus on the task at hand. At the mention of catching the bug Pokémon and releasing them back into the wild, he nodded his consent. As long as he wasn't expected to keep any of them and they were going to be released back into the wild, he was fine with that.

Grabbing a few Pokéballs, he threw them at a few other Volt had managed to paralyze, causing them to be sucked into the Pokéballs. Between the two of them, catching the bug Pokémon wouldn't take long, and soon enough, it was just the two of them left in his home alongside their Pokémon.

"Are you sure you're okay to release them by yourself?" he asked. He really should clean up his home from where the bug Pokémon had knocked stuff over, but if she needed the help, he would postpone doing it in order to assist.
