Every glowing weak spot burst like bubblewrap in a child’s hands.[break][break]

He might have been about speed, but she counted every bullet down to the tee before reloading.[break][break]

In a truthfully short amount of time, the level ends. Cheers sound from behind them but Yujin almost doesn’t hear, leaning forward to peer at her metrics. Accuracy 86%?! The old version of her was aghast, but that old self didn’t even show itself on her face anymore.[break][break]

“Yes, beer! Maybe not too much though, I’m a lightweight.”[break][break]

She turned away from the cabinet, eyes flickering wistfully between the bar and the rewards counter, the former manned by an older silver fox and the latter staffed by a pimply teenager. They only needed to win three more games for a large prize, and she would not leave this island without a memento! She’d been eyeing that giant, ugly bruxish plushie for the past hour![break][break]

Yujin began pushing past the crowd without even looking at them. And to make sure she didn’t lose Navy, she’d grab his hand—followed by a low murmur nearby going, ’daaaaaaamn’.

It was true. There were a bevy of stereotypes about musicians, normally that they were poor, and/or did drugs, and/or were depressed, and/or were romantic. It was safe to say that the man wasn’t broke, but the rest were for her to discover.[break][break]

The next sequence of events started with being nudged back, her impressive pair of… cowlicks bouncing about. It ended with the giant worm being added (probably) to his already vast collection.[break][break]

“Because… you wanted me to yourself?”[break][break]

She put her hands on her hips. She wore a long and elaborate blue jacket, furred at the hood and cuffs. It was color coded against his red eyes, like nearly everything else about her.[break][break]

“Sorry, sorry! Let me try again. Because…” She looked about. After having seen the suspicious trap set by the orthworm, she was starting to notice other, conveniently close by anomalies. Like that thick wad of snow that looked like a buried evergreen, but was actually…[break][break]

Yujin tried to replicate the elite four’s throw down to the verve. I mean, might as well.[break][break]

And there went the second pokeball she’s ever tossed out, straight against the abomasnow’s backside. Brilliant flash of light and all.[break][break]

“...Because there’s something here that can’t be found elsewhere. Hopefully it’s not a lesson, Callan. You can teach me a lesson anywhere.”[break][break]

His explanation was shrouded in multiple layers of what she, who already disdained the competitions, considered to be fluff. Real battles taught lessons too.[break][break]

Yujin looked at the description of the new song with an inscrutable expression. What started as a fun afternoon in the arcade had sharpened into a potential new hobby. She would have to practice once he was gone.[break][break]

Then again, he did mention pokemon racing. Perhaps two new hobbies.[break][break]

“No, no. I never lower a difficulty! Though this one is my last I think, I’m starting to lose concentration.”[break][break]

They mowed down the unrelenting horde with impressive efficiency; these zombies were destined to die, helpless as their homogenous, 8-bit cry.[break][break]

Navy wore a soldier’s grimace. Yujin powered through with a thousand gigawatt smile.[break][break]

“On your ten. Glowing better bullet thing.” (Damage power-up.)[break][break]

She had gotten used to the nonsensical reload function and the five hearts that apparently represented her healthiness. She’d even gotten used to how the screen moved jarringly after their characters, taking outright idiotic paths through dilapidated city streets.[break][break]

Finally, a conveniently cleared intersection. A choppa. But then a rumble, a cinematic cutscene as a pilot goes 'MAYDAY, MAYDAY' while a towering hand swipes at the vehicle, and then—[break][break]

Bodies rolled up and against one another in an undulating wave like some forgotten, pleistocene monstrosity of the deep, alive and well and feasting upon the energy of Slateport.[break][break]

Yujin had already made sure to locate the exits. More importantly, she was deciding whether she was actually going to use all those ‘trendy’ zippers on her outfit.[break][break]

A shiver in the air, the rustle of a different set of vibrations, made her turn. The dude had a sleepy, delinquent look to him. In fact, he reminded her of that punk 'boyfriend' she had several years back.[break][break]

“WHAT?” was the first thing she said, needing to lean in way close to the guy who’d asked her a question. “NO, I’M HERE BECAUSE LIFE HAS NO MEANING.”[break][break]

She grinned. She didn't look like the person for whom life held no meaning. Even more so, she'd offer him a water bottle.

And for a short period of time, that dazzling dusk would cause all the riches of the earth to rise, making the gasping passengers on the pool deck the wealthiest creatures in existence—beyond what they’d already needed to attend a cruise off the coast of Lilycove.[break][break]

Yujin grumbled and shifted away from the flashing cameras, trying to get comfortable on one of the pool chairs. It was lounge city central, and even at her best attempt to ‘blend in’ all the nearby seats were taken by suspiciously good-looking scions.[break][break]

One of them, at least, was supposed to be there.[break][break]

“I don’t suppose you see something yet, darling?”[break][break]

Asked to Gunner, who had hopefully spotted something that would put Yujin out of her boredom-induced misery on this escort quest.

But maybe gossip would be good attention for Dewford's brand new representative?

"Don't worry." She brushed her hair off her shoulder. "I'll be on my best behavior. I dress up, too."

Yujin looked at him from the corner of her eye. He got a little animated in the way he described the silliest things. Games were an acceptable stand-in for real life. She was already a dark horse of Step Step Revolution, what's ne— "Oh! Is there one of those shooting zombies games? I love those! I mean—yes. Yes, I would like that."

At this rate she would perish of excitement before the day was even over. "Alright, I must actually go be productive. Give me your number, will you? So I can let you know when I'm done."
