canem's fury has the desired effect. it seems to sink in now that the mystery man in the hole he dug himself into is hopelessly outmatched. he reaches for his togekiss, but hesitates due to the flames licking the feathery thing's body. nikola puts a hand up. "canem, enough." their arcanine obeys, stilling her body, allowing isaac to safely bridge the gap and mount his togekiss. nikola isn't sorry to see him go, though they have a sort of grim satisfaction in seeing that their intimidation tactics have worked.[break][break]

once he's gone, they look at the hole. curiosity grips them. he could be right, says a voice at the back of their head. then they shake it away, grimacing. "no. there's nothing to be found here. there's no way they failed to plunder this area." annoyed at themself for almost giving in to the stranger's fervor, they begin to kick dirt back into the hole. canem sees what they're doing and decides to help, pushing over the mound of dirt so enthusiastically she gets dirt on nikola instead. "augh-- jeez!" the massive canine pants happily, oblivious to her trainer wiping their glasses off on a clean spot on their jacket.

their expression, what little of it is visible on their face, grows hard. ...he's right, they think to themself. it's too late to turn back now. they joined forces with team rocket to chase their goal, not to save their own soul. their body is breaking down, and there's no telling how long they have until they're unable to complete the research that might heal them. it could be years, months... perhaps they're even wrong, and their health will only improve. it's impossible to say, because of what they put their body through when they were working with professor thorne.[break][break]

"...very well. i have little time to waste, so i'll be getting serious now." they find something in their pocket. it's shaped like a pokeball, but as they hold it out, it'll become evident it is nothing of the sort. altaria likely has super effective moves against terra... so let's shake things up a little. the orb begins to glow, and so does their garchomp. her physiology changes, as she becomes a fire type. i can finish his altaria off in less than three turns, no problem... just like this. terra would lose her bonus to her own dragon-type attacks, sure, but her defenses will be much stronger as a result.[break][break]

her eyes glow as the change finishes. "dragon rush!" the former dragon-type becomes a blur, rushing headlong at the altaria.

they may be starting to break through his denial, nikola observes, which only serves to strengthen it. his dusknoir goes down, and in its place comes a togekiss, a species nikola is very familiar with. it launches an aura sphere at luna, a super effective attack that sends her flying back. she gets back to her feet, but judging by how her legs shake when she takes up a fighting stance, nikola knows it's better not to push her.[break][break]

now, then... who shall deal with this fairy in front of them? just a little more of a push, and hopefully this can be over. their fingers find a ball, and they take hold of it. rather than throwing it, they hold it out in front of them, pointing it at isaac and his togekiss. they release the pokemon within, and their arcanine takes form there on the field. "raging fury!"[break][break]

canem's body blazes, as she begins to rage then and there. though her attack is aimed at the togekiss, sparks are propelled dangerously close to isaac. the arcanine's tantrum, too, throws the soil underneath her around, threatening to cave in isaac's hole in the ground, undoing everything he's already done. "face reality!" nikola snaps at him. "is this fantasy worth risking your life over!?"

there's plenty of ways to utilize a community garden space. nikola's been busy trying to crossbreed various berries, stopping by the space when they absolutely have to leave the lab or they'll go mad. of course, the fact that it's a communal space means various pokemon have access to it as well...[break][break]

which is why they're not too shocked to find a stantler eating some of their most recent project. "HEY!" they bark, waving their arms to try and shoo it away. the stantler looks at them, determines they're not a threat, and goes back to munching on their berries. nikola grabs a pokeball from their belt. "fine then! circuitio, venoshock!"[break][break]

the scolipede appears and immediately launches a poison attack at the normal type. the stantler, startled, tries to flee. nikola glares. "oh no you don't..." they throw another pokeball, this one empty. it closes around the stantler, and they adjust their glasses. "i'm sure i can find some use for you."

...ah, yes. the "rock-creature". the very same behemoth that very nearly killed nikola, more than once, in the great chasm not that long ago. as far as encounters with legendaries go, they're not sure it gets more harrowing than that. they can't say they're a fan of regirock at the present moment, but this strange man would maybe have a point, if not for the obvious.[break][break]

the thunder punch connects with luna. she grunts, the impact once again lessened by both her earlier charm and the dusknoir's burn. nikola figures it's time to be finishing this. "dark pulse." a wave of dark energy pours out from the umbreon, and she concentrates its power on the dusknoir nearby. "you're right about one thing; there may have been undiscovered plates after that battle," nikola says. "but this is team rocket territory now. do you really think they would have just left them here, uncovered?"[break][break]

they point at him. "someone else has surely been here before you, and cleaned it all out!" they announce.

that braviary has to be on its last legs, nikola figures. it's been struck twice, and this whirlwind is its last hail mary, hoping to get rid of the boost their scizor collected from baton pass. it works well enough, their scizor being flung back into its ball, something new taking its place. its been hurt, but only a bit, so it should be prepared for the next fight.[break][break]

nicholas might come to regret this decision, however, because what replaces the scizor is far larger and more fearsome... nikola's garchomp takes the stage, eyes leering down at the injured braviary. nikola touches their bracelet, but tells themself this is not the time. in a moment, yes, they may decide to put the fear of garchomp into nicholas. but right now there's something more important that needs doing. "finish it!" they yell, and their garchomp launches itself forward, slashing the braviary with a fearsome dragon claw. nikola fiddles with their glasses.[break][break]

"...once again, i must state that i hate unnecessary violence. this is your first warning," they state. "you're welcome to leave now. it may spare your pokemon their pain." they won't lie, though; their blood is singing in their veins, and they almost hope he refuses, so that they can unleash their special weapon on him.

they're interrupted. their mask snaps back over their face, and they recoil. they try to pull it off again, but it seems glued there. worse yet is the fact that their mind is becoming... muddied. it's a familiar sensation, one that sends them spiraling as they realize what's going on. no! no, not again! give... them... back![break][break]

it's no use. once again their precious memories go slithering away, until all they're left with is the broken identity that formed after their previous amnesia. nikola suddenly straightens up and turns back to makoto, their posture different, even their voice blithely cheerful as opposed to the playful cynicism from before. "right! what were we talking about?" catellus can't remember.[break][break]

their attention is captured by something else. they spy the research notes and immediately hurry over to them. "ooh, this looks promising..." some sort of... field notes, it seems? they're old, but still worth a look, so nikola starts paging through them voraciously.

there's somebody else here now. or maybe he was here before; nikola wasn't really paying attention, instead flipping through news reports on their phone. they glance at the newcomer, mouth curving into a frown under their mask. "they're just weedle," they say shortly. they quite like bug pokemon, in fact. if they weren't clearly swarming, they'd insist there's no problem to be found here.[break][break]

but they are swarming, which makes them pause. "hold it," they tell minjun abruptly, hands on their hips. "think this through. they're clearly coming from somewhere. there must be a hive nearby." they look around the room, to where the frightened receptionist is frozen behind the desk, between the weedle crawling around, trying to spot something out of place... it's unlikely the hive is in here, or else it would be obvious. they then look up at the ceiling. there, a hole in the wall! "it must be on the roof," they conclude. as if to prove their point, another small weedle squeezes itself through the hole, clambering down the wall.[break][break]

if there's weedle, there's bound to be beedrill. probably better not to piss them off. they pick out a pokeball and summon their shiinotic. "use stun spore on the weedle," they command. "we need to slow them down, not fight them." just like that, they're working together with minjun, whether he likes it or not.

treasure? what treasure? their lips set in a thin line as they glare down at him. the will-o-wisp hits luna, flickering flames engulfing her and leaving her skin scorched... but at that moment, her ability kicks in, and the dusknoir opposing her will feel itself become very hot, as the burn is passed to it via synchronize. it's exactly what nikola expected to happen, which is why they didn't order her to dodge. and because luna trusts her trainer, she also trusted their judgment. she knows they won't let her fall for no reason.[break][break]

"...go ahead and heal up, luna," they tell her. the umbreon shakes herself off, and takes a new stance. overhead, though the sun is still high in the sky... a moon comes out to visit, its soft light gently bathing the umbreon, healing most of her injuries. she's still burned, but she can take the punishment because she knows she can heal herself.[break][break]

nikola squats down. "and why exactly do you think there's treasure here?" they ask isaac, bewildered but curious. "a geological survey turned up nothing of note. and you think that's different now? surely you have a reason."

geminae climbs to his feet again, wobbling with the pain of it. it's at this precise moment that the braviary begins to thrash against its psychic shackles. geminae tries to hold it, but the bird breaks free, its size and power aiding it in its escape. it's clearly hellbent on revenge in some way, staring at the firagiraf like a cat that's cornered a particularly wily mouse. nikola sees in a flash how this might end, and makes a decision before the braviary's thrash can reach its target.[break][break]

"baton pass!" the firagiraf returns to its ball, and something else takes its place. the braviary's attack will instead meet a metal carapace, rather than the soft hide of the giraffe pokemon that's fled the scene. it does damage, but not nearly as much as it would have done against geminae... and with the baton pass, the speed boost is transferred as well. incisus, who's already much faster than the firagiraf by default, is now even faster.[break][break]

incisus lashes out, strking at the braviary with a slash attack, its movement a blur. the bug type which would normally be at risk fighting a flying type has grown a thick outer shell, encasing it, protecting it from danger. it's not unlike nikola themself, wrapping themself in cynicism so they don't have to be disappointed in people anymore. in a way they envy the scizor, wishing it could be that simple for them, too.

it's as they thought; he was preparing to attack if they refused to turn their back. the first attempt fails, thanks to luna's detect allowing her to move out of the way. then comes the fire punch, the dusknoir's hand wreathed in flame. luna isn't particularly fast, and they can't use detect again, but that doesn't mean they have nothing up their sleeve. "charm!" they call, before the punch lands.[break][break]

the umbreon struts her stuff, showing off to decrease the dusknoir's attack power. the blow will still hit, but it'll be greatly softened if luna's charm works. with her naturally high defenses, she should be only a little worse for wear. "important work?" nikola questions acerbically, staring down at isaac. what could possibly be important here? "you're in the middle of nowhere, digging a hole in the ground where there isn't anything to be found. i think you need a reality check, and soon." is this what they were like when they were catellus, their mind and memories poisoned by that woman and her beheeyem? it's a wonder anyone could tolerate them.
