As it happened, Mantine Surfing? Was really rough on the back. Which was unfortunate for her, because Mitsuru's back was already rough at the best of times. Still, she managed to walk away from her horribly botched attempt at the surprisingly complex Magikarp Splash, so that was a plus! Kind of. Maybe. Y'know. Kind of.

So, she decided to take a break for now. She could come back to that once her lumbar didn't feel like it might snap at any moment. So, while waiting for that impossibility to come true, she decided to further indulge the beachy festivities and do a little Clamperl Diving!

Which wasn't really that great on the back, either. But apparently, the pearls that you could fish up were worth a pretty penny. How could she not at least give it a try?

"Okay. Okay! Here goes nothing..."

And thus, she dove for Clamperl.

Okay! Summer! Summertime! Summertime fun! Fun in the summertime! It was time to go outside into the summer and have a fun time! On the beach! In a swimsuit! In public! The intensely judgemental and cruel public! In summer in a swimsuit in public time! Summer...!

...In hindsight, it made a lot of sense why it had taken her this long to actually go to the beach. But, hey, she was here now! Mitsuru was here, afeared, and ready to Mantine Surf! Preferably, on a very calm and friendly Mantine, over some very small and safe waves. Surely then, the intensely unflinchingly judgemental and needlessly excessively cruel public wouldn't so much as bat an eye at her!

So, before she knew it, she boarded her Mantine of choice (Bubbles, Male, Gentle Nature), and set off to catch her first wave. But, what trick to start with?

"Hm... The Magikarp Splash? That sounds easy enough... Okay! Let's go, Bubbles! Magikarp Splash!"

Taking her glass into her hands, Mitsuru held it as though her life depended on it. Knowing how fancy this place was, their "normal" glass of red wine was probably several times more than she'd pay for a full bottle. And considering the state of her finances? She might as well have been holding a chalice of liquid gold.

All that is to say, she didn't even so much as lift it an inch off the countertop. In her mind, that seemed the most sensible thing to do. After all, what if she spilled it? No, she'd already put herself in the red, the last thing she wanted was to waste it. Not to mention, if she ended up embarrassing herself in front of high society, she might as well curl up into a ball and die right then and there...

...Speaking of embarrassing herself.

"E-ehehe... Well, it's not that complicated, I guess." Mitsuru shrunk a little, doing her best to avoid eye contact as her brain worked overtime to string words together. "I just, um, y'know, I... I wanted to thank you."

With a wounded gurgle, a shatter of light, and a wet thump, the Walking Wake topples backward. Soon after that, it begins to sink, the added weight of the salt crystals enough to drag it down to the depths below. Before long, it's disappeared completely beneath the deep blue waters. Mitsuru would've believed it was an illusion, a hallucination of her fear-addled mind, were it not for the all-too-real flames that burnt that poor Leafeon...

Where did it even come from? Why was it even here? When searching for answers, her eyes were inevitably drawn back to the crystalline tree at the centre of it all. Something about it made her feel uneasy. Despite her curiosity, she didn't dare get close to it. Just looking at it was enough to make a chill run down her spine.

Still, she pulled out her phone and snapped a few pictures of the thing, if only for posterity's sake.

But they couldn't stay long. The water levels were rising, and the Entei was getting further and further away. So, the only way was forward, past the dissipating wall of Tera Crystals and further into the winding cave.

"Yeah... Yeah! Let's hurry before-- EEEeeeeep...?"

Without warning, Mitsuru was lifted off her feet, and for a single second, she truly believed that the Walking Wake had came back to get its revenge upon her. However, as she was lowered onto the solid and stable shoulders of her trusted Garganacl, her shriek of terror turned to a prolonged sigh. W-well, at least she wouldn't have to walk anymore? Which was good! But.

"Seimei? Please warn me when you're going to pick up next time..."

The golem only offered a low rumble in respond, before beginning to walk.

Okay. Okay! Things might have been a little muddled at the start, and they may have gotten a little confused in the middle, but it seemed like they were finally straightening it out! This was progress. Not fantastic progress, but still progress.

But just because they were over the hump, that didn't mean the questions were getting any easier to answer.

"Ah, well, that's..." Lady Crane began, before quickly trailing off. It was probably best to just keep the information to the essentials. It's not like Yuina had much use for the complete history of the religious practices of the Brass Tower monks, did she? "...I can't speak for everyone and everything, but from my understanding, reincarnation isn't so much a black or white thing, as it is shades of grey."

She paused for a moment to take a sip of her tea, before continuing.

"It's based on your karma. If you were good in a past life, you're reborn into a better one, while if you were bad in your past life, you're reborn into a worse one. Of course, it's, um, a little controversial of a theory, but that's the gist of it, anyway."

Mitsuru allowed herself to be dragged out of the way. What else was she supposed to do? She was so terrified that she could barely even think, let alone refuse. All she knew was that her feet were moving away from the monster in front of her, and that was good enough for her.

Leave it to them. That's all she needed to do! Just run away. Get out of here. Let the qualified professionals handle it. Leave them to fight this horribly powerful thing that might kill them but that was fine because it wasn't really her job to fight it so she just needed to get out and leave it to them and oh Arceus she was such a coward but it was fine because this wasn't her problem because they told her it wasn't so--

The sounds of screaming and growling and a Leafeon being cooked by flames only made her racing mind run faster. Yet no matter how badly her mind wanted to flee, her legs would only carry her wherever she was pulled. So terrified, yet too afraid. Just like back in the Great Chasm. Just like back in Johto.

The Walking Wake, furious, opened its maw wide...

...And a blocky hand reached up to clamp it shut.

"S-Seimei?"

Sure enough, the Garganacl dragged itself up, using the unsinking Paradox Pokemon as an anchor with which to climb. Then, it unleashed a Salt Cure. White crystals spread from its finger and across the false Suicune, digging into its scales and drying it both inside and out.

"Seimei!"

Seeing her Pokemon return to the fight helped to calm her unsteady heart, if only for a moment. Was it still bad? Yes. But maybe, just maybe, it wasn't as bad as it seemed...?

As weird as it was to say, this little side tunnel was surprising calm. At least, compared to the mess happening back in the last cavern, anyway. It gave Mitsuru time to sit up, breathe, and recover from the shock of her sudden fall. She wasn't relaxed, but this? This was as close to relaxing as she'd find here.

Though, if she had known what would happen next, she might've been a little more urgent. As soon as the other guard caught up with them, Tera Crystals shot up like bamboo shoots, shining spears that stabbed into the ceiling and quickly sealed their exit. She wished she could be surprised, but honestly? This seemed about on-par for how her day was going. Maybe even a little better, though not by much. At least the barrier didn't end up impaling her?

But, well, here she was. Stuck in a cave with two (admittedly very nice) strangers. Maybe if she was lucky, they'd get rescued before the hunger started to kick in? Because Mitsuru really didn't like the idea of being eaten. N-not that she thought they were cannibals or anything, mind! It was just, y'know... If they WERE going to eat somebody, it would probably be her, because... Y'know...

...There was another way out?

"Thank HECK!" Mitsuru jumped to her feet, making it about halfway to standing before having to awkwardly struggle and scrabble up the wall to her full height. Yet even that inelegant display wasn't able to wake the wind out of her sails! "Let's hurry and get out of here, girls!"

Yep. That was them. The ladies. The girls. The "sisters". They were like Destiny's Child, or TLC, or the female half of the cast of F.R.I.E.N.D.S! Together, they were unstoppable! And together, they'd--

--All of a sudden, an unpleasantly wet yet undeniably familiar growl rang out in the dark.

"AAAAaaaahem. Ahem... Ah, em, hello?"

As the flashlight shone upon the blue scales and piercing eyes, she couldn't help but flinch. But while Aurelie made a wise retreat, Mitsuru managed to suppress that instinct and stand her ground.

"Walking Wake? I-is that you?"

Sure enough, it was a Walking Wake. Yet, as it drew closer, the murk that surrounded it was dispelled by a too-bright glow, and bared fangs made it evidently obvious that it was not her Walking Wake. That was to say, she was currently standing only a few feet away from a wild beast that likely intended to kill and eat her.

...

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!"

OH NO OH NO NO NO NO NO QUICK QUICK SEND OUT A POKEMON NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW!

And she did. As sheer terror and pure adrenaline both coursed through her, she grabbed the first Pokeball on her belt and tossed it forth. Immediately, her Gargancl burst forth, an unflinching fighter willing to stand between her and her foe. Yes. YES! This was perfect! Seimei would be able to beat this Walking Wake back, and she'd be--

SPLASH!

Unfortunately, Garganacl were very large, very heavy, and could not walk on water. No sooner than she sent forth her Pokemon did it immediately sink into the water like a stone. Now, there was nothing between predator and prey. She was completely defenceless.

Once upon a time, in the distant past, there were two samurai, a pair of brothers who sought fame and fortune. The eldest of the two was brave, boundlessly fearless but bottomlessly foolish. The youngest, meanwhile, was a spineless coward, with quick legs but a quicker mind. Together, they ventured far and wide in hopes of finding glory.

One day, while sailing upon the sea, they were caught in a terrible storm that destroyed their ship. However, when they awoke, they found themselves washed up on a strange island. There, the sun shone warmer, the wind blew cooler, and the water was crystal clear. Fruit grew on every tree and berries grew on every bush. It was a veritable paradise, a place with no wars to die in or laws to chafe against, where the brothers could live out the rest of their days in bliss.

However, as they explored this strange land, they came upon a strange sight - A beautiful maiden, clad in shining jewels and fine silks, being attacked by a monstrous octopus.

"What a fine beast!" The eldest thought. "I shall take up my sword and slay it! When I bring its body back home, they will think me a monster slayer and crown me a hero!"

"What fine luxuries!" The youngest thought. "I shall wait until the maiden is distracted and steal them! When I bring them back home, I'm sure they'll sell for a healthy sum!"

And so, they sprung into action. The eldest pulled out their blade and attacked the octopus, slicing tentacle after tentacle. Eventually, the creature panicked, and began to flee. Furious, the eldest chased after it, intent on finishing its battle. As the maiden was caught off-guard, the youngest stole all he could from her. Furious, the maiden tried to catch him, but it was no use. He ran and he ran and he ran until he made his escape.

Later that day, the two brothers met once more. The eldest has successfully slain his quarry, and the youngest had stolen a small fortune. It seemed that both of them had gotten all that they had wanted.

Yet, as the sun set and the moon rose, and as the brothers slept, the maiden would visit them once more, and her true form would be revealed - A goddess of nature, divine and powerful and spiteful beyond any other. Using her powers, she revealed their true nature, and transformed the two into insects as punishment for their misdeeds. Whether their actions were good or evil, their dirty intentions nevertheless damned them. Such was the nature of the Gods, ever fickle yet neverendingly wise...

...Or at least, that's how she remembered the legend. It'd been decades since she last heard it, but it'd always left an impression on her. So much so that even now, watching the Wimpod and the Golisopod gathering on the beach, it came to mind.

"Hm..."

A part of her started to feel uneasy. As though this innocuous gathering of bugs was some kind of bad omen sent from heaven on high. But, well... No, no, it was nothing.

Okay, so: Good news, bad news.

The good news was, she didn't get impaled by a falling stalagmite. Or, was it a stalactite? The point was, she didn't get crushed nor stabbed by a falling rock.

The bad news was, she instead ended up tumbling into a nearby tunnel. After a rather short but painfully long fall, she tripped and stumbled and fell and unceremoniously splatted against an (in)conveniently placed Tera Crystal. Only metaphorically splatted, though! Luckily, it wasn't one of those sharp clusters, because if it had been... Eeesh.

"Ow..."

But even metaphorically splatted was still more splatted than was healthy. Peeling herself off the shimmering shards, Mitsuru immediately flumped to the floor. Despite her best efforts, it seemed her Walking Wake had slipped the leash. She could only hope it didn't cause too much trouble while she was gone. Though, seeing how much trouble it had caused while she was there? Well, she'd need a lot more than hope for that.

But she couldn't worry about that right now, because as it happened, that falling rock hadn't dodged itself.

"Um, thank you, miss." Mitsuru sat up, looking over to Aurelie Lefevre. She didn't know the woman, but there was just something inherently trustworthy about her, wasn't there? Thinking about it, it made perfect sense. After all, with those quick reflexes and selfless instincts, she was probably some kind of police officer or gym trainer. "But really, please don't worry about me! I'm fine. I've gone through much worse than this."

A fact that was as worryingly true as it was worryingly sad.

Her Walking Wake was many things. Needlessly aggressive, for one, and incredibly stubborn, for another. But while it might've been many things, "easily distracted" wasn't one of them. No, it pursued its not-brother with a singleminded determination, like a well-trained Boltund on the hunt for a fleeing Nickit. Not for lack of trying on the Leafeon's part, but alas, no amount of ducking or weaving or playing chicken with stomping feet would be enough to distract it.

Which was unfortunate, because Mitsuru would've REALLY liked for this chase to be over. Still, she followed her Paradox Pokemon as it followed the Entei that followed... Another Entei? And there were two others following it ahead of her, and two more following from behind her... What was up with the two Entei? How was that possible?? And what where either of them doing here???

Just trying to sort things out made her head hurt, and all this running was doing a number on her back, too. This was a mess. Could it get any more hectic?

Yes, they could, and as draconic energy began to pool in the jaws of her Walking Wake, they quickly would.

"No! Bad! Bad dog! Stop it! STOP IT STOP IT BAD BAD BAD!"

But no amount of heckling could sway the beast. A Dragon Pulse fired forth, trying to clip one of the two Entei and slow them down. Unfortunately, the blast didn't even come close to scraping the hound. That wasn't the reason it was unfortunate, though! No, Entei being unharmed was the silver lining! But, well, there was still a cloud, and that was all the damage to the walls and the ceiling.

"Heck!"

As chunks of rock and stone began to rain down, Mitsuru let out a yelp of stress and doubled her pace, while her Walking Wake thundered on. H-had her Pokemon just desecrated a one-of-a-kind historical site? No! Don't worry about that right now! She'd have plenty of time to worry about it later!

Just her luck... The one day she decides to pay a friendly little visit to Sootopolis, and what happens? A whole war breaks out! And of course, OF COURSE, she's stuck in the middle of it! Ugh. This sucked. This sucked! She hated this. A lot!

...She hoped nikkari hect was okay. He... He did live here, right? She definitely remembered him living here...

But! Every cloud had a silver lining, and at least if she had to be stuck anywhere, it was the Cave of Origin. The Shrine of Awakening, they called it, the place where life began. These stony walls were thick with history, deep with lore and rich with mythology. S-she wasn't sure they would make for much of a bunker, mind, but... To finally get the chance to visit them was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

If only she could convince herself to get excited about it. Instead, she was mostly busy curling up into a ball, trying not to worry about the distant booms and rumbles, and staring at nothing in particular as she prayed to Entei that she wouldn't die here--

Entei?

Mitsuru blinked. Then, she blinked again. And again, and again, and again. Yet no matter how many times her eyes fluttered open or shut, the beast remained. It was here? Really here? Then, did that mean that kyle lopez was...?

Her train of thought was derailed as a Pokeball upon her belt, damp and scratched and covered in teeth marks, began to tremble.

"Wait, wait! WaitwaitwaitWAITWAIT--"

And like a tsunami crashing down, her Walking Wake burst forth. And all the Paradox needed was one look at its brother from another time, rushing deeper into the cave, to lose what little restraint it had. And so, it rushed forward.

"No! Stop! Buddy! Slow down! Please? Pretty please?! Stop! SIT! STAY!"

And so, in a frantic attempt to calm her runaway Pokemon, Mitsuru ran after it.
