Porter’s second dive is a lot faster paced than his first. They’re not down long before something seismic shakes the water; there’s the loud, echoing sound of breaking metal-- like some long-asleep leviathan waking, unwilling, from its slumber-- and then he and Ermenesande are trying to lift a steel frame off another group of rescue divers.

“Ah-- little help here, Iehyelvi,” he pants, releasing his Dhelmise, who hooks the framework and begins to lift it. Hopefully paxton concordas can come in and help the people escape.

Porter looked out at the expanse of Sea Mauville, the way it stretched and built upon itself like a dark skeleton against the endless Pthalo sea. He swallowed, tightening his wetsuit grip on Iehyelvi’s shank.

He looked up at the fast-fading dappled sunlight as it punched against the deep-water layer and died.

“You’ve been down here, right? Do you know what we’re looking for?”

Urana spun around him, chirping with excitement.

The Palafin squeaked and dashed forward, disappearing behind a fractured glass wall.

The Scyther actually attacked them.

A high-pitched buzzing, steadily increasing in volume, was Porter’s only warning. Vanyari pulled a barrel roll and he had to crush himself down close to her back and hang on tight. The Scyther’s arm blade passed inches away from his face.

Vanyari aimed a razor wind that clipped one of the insect’s wings, and before it could right itself, Porter threw a Safari Ball.

There were a small collection of Gible rooting through the muck at the edges of the marshy terrain. Porter didn’t want to get too close and risk riling them up, since they had the numbers advantage and big mouths with sharp teeth.

“Use Razor Wind to break them up,” he said, and Vanyari did that, conjuring sharp strikes of gusty air that sent them scattering, confused.

They zeroed in on the one that went the furthest away, dropping a safari ball on it from above.

Vanyari zipped through the still-falling droplets from her diminished hurricane, as the hastily conjured stormclouds cleared and the wind died down. She lashed out her foot and caught… something, that had been sucked up in the maelstrom. Porter leaned over to see a strange, purple Qwilfish dangling from her foot-- she had it by its spineless tail, though when it saw Porter, it began to inflate. He yelped and zapped it with a Safari Ball.

A tendril of algae flicks above the water’s surface, catching Vanyari’s eye. The pigeon changes course-- so suddenly, it makes Porter squawk-- and whips the lake into a writhing hurricane, flinging the Dhelmise high into the air. Porter squawks again, scrambles to grab a Safari Ball, and lines up his throw to ping the anchor before it can splash down again.
