while no ranger, dane is a decent enough trainer, able to hold his own even against sturdy league officers back in johto. he doesn't expect anna to know this, obviously, so he doesn't fault her for being worried.[break][break]

they don't talk about it much as he doesn't share unless asked, but the fairchilds were responsible for tending to the cemeteries in mahogany as well as the one at the lake of rage up north. for that reason, dane has always been comfortable around death.[break][break]

he slumps down into a chair, swiveling to look at her until the back hits the desk to rattle the fake computer on it.[break][break]

suits him? he may be a single and relatively eligible bachelor but he doesn't want to be exuding that aura. he thinks he doesn't, but if a place like this suits him then maybe he does.[break][break]

the nature of grunt work requires him to always be available, so acclimating has proven difficult with how erratic his schedule has been. he could be needed in rustboro one day only to be moved to sootopolis the next. hoenn's transportation infrastructure is impressive, to say the least.[break][break]

but, finally, he finds time to look at apartments with his cousin. their third viewing so far is a small but cozy corner room on the sixth floor of mauville hills.[break][break]

"it's nice."[break][break]

he glances around.[break][break]

"but i'm not too sure about the decor."[break][break]

it feels far too much like a bachelor pad.[break][break]

after turning a corner, they slow, their pace now more comfortable than urgent as they walk through what appears to be bodies laid out on the ground, each overrun by black crystals. though familiar with death, the sight is still enough to make his heart sink.[break][break]

"yes, once." though he's not sure if that's enough to qualify him to keep them both alive. he knows, deep down, that he'd save himself should it come down to it, but he keeps that to himself for obvious reasons.[break][break]

immediately after dane turns, another voice calls out to them from the darkness.[break][break]

"you're trusting that guy to make sure you don't die? ha! you're doomed."[break][break]

out steps a clear MEGALOPOLAN, though they lack the distinct crazed features of the rest.[break][break]
