Who didn't use contractions when they talked? What, was this lady a princess or something? Sol looked her up and down, she was pretty enough to be the kind he had read about - in a sense. She was no Radiant Princess which was, of course, his favorite princess story. Although, that was neither here nor there.

"You're welcome." Sol left out a quip he was going to make about common sense, but this woman was clearly earnest in her ignorance, and her adorable little Mimikyu wanted to play the game. Why be needlessly cruel?

Sol cocked his head to look past the woman, at her Pokemon as he played, a brilliant smile worthy of a magazine cover displayed on his features. "Huh? Oh, no, this is literally my first time in an arcade. Wait," Sol held up his finger while he thought, "No, yeah, this is my first time. Oh, and I'm actually a guy. I'm just really pretty is all."

"Sol. My name is Sol. Solstice Arylide, really, but only my parents call me that." Sol shrugged, why did her name sound so familiar? "I take it this is your first time, then? Your Mimikyu seems so taken with the little game."

He wished he could feign sympathy for Navy, or perhaps fake a tear for his story...but his emotions were all real. It hurt to hear, resonated too close to home. Sol grimaced, "That must have been hard for you."

Had they been closer, Sol might have offered him more. They had a lot more in common than one would think at first glance. Sol was living proof that looks can be deceiving and yet he is so frequently taught that lesson... "Believe it or not, I know that. It's me. I'm my problem. I'm the one that thinks this way. No amount of her being happy for me is going to be enough until I feel like I've earned it."

He chewed on his lip, tearing on the skin with his teeth, an old habit he tried not to partake in anymore. His eyes followed Navy's hands, but the sheriff didn't have Sol's full focus. Instead, something was itching on his mind. A singular thought that was pestering him even as Navy used silly comparisons - which did earn a smile from Sol.

"I appreciate your concern, by the way. I'm sure my family would too - pardon me," Sol retrieved his chopsticks and began trying to use them as Navy had shown to (mild) success, "I, um, I'm not sure how to say this...do I remind you of him? Is that why we're here? Because I don't - erm, never mind, forget I even asked. It was insensitive."

Sol's face was flushed tomato red and he began shoveling as much ramen down his gullet as he could. What was wrong with him? Why would he ask that? And why was he shoveling the food down his throat? It burned! A lot! He didn't let it cool down enough!

It seems they both were lost in their own worlds for a moment. Sol recognized the vacancy in Navy's eyes, he saw it in the mirror from time to time. He decided against mentioning it. They had just met, after all, and the last thing he needed was to spill all of his beans to this man.

Sol smiles at Navy's assessment of him, he had always loved being psychoanalyzed. He usually preferred it when his friends did it, he thought of it as a fun game: 'How Well Do You Know Sol?' But having the sheriff do it was almost as good.

As the older man spoke, he desperately tried to get his chopsticks to pick up more than one noodle at a time. Laughing behind his hand, Sol spoke, "It might seem that way, huh? Given how I talk sometimes." He gave up on his chopsticks, setting them down.

"Purpose. I came here for a purpose." There was melancholy to those words, something he wasn't quite saying.

Since he wanted to get something from Navy, he supposed he'd pay for it with his honesty.

"I was a sick kid," He held up a finger, "But I don't want your pity. I have enough to last me three lifetimes. Anyways, I was sick. My parents had to pay out the nose to get me the best treatment they could and they didn't get results for a really long time, so the only thing they ever got was me. And, yeah, I'm pretty great. But just being me never feels like enough."

"Ugh, word vomit. Probably a bit too much information for a stranger. Whatever, you'll live." Sol waved his hand dismissively, "So I came here. Specifically for Gods and Monsters but also to find something more. Something worth my life and all that it cost my parents to give to me."

At some point, his eyes had drifted downwards to where his hands had started fidgeting awkwardly. It was hard to be vulnerable, especially to a stranger. But it was worth it for Nihilego and whatever info Navy would give him for his honesty. "What about you? What's your damage?"

"Well, it is officially time to diversify the dream team," Sol loosed Rose from her Pokeball, "Apparently there's a war and if our research is to be conducted without incident we should be stronger. Which includes strength in numbers and all that."

Thus, they had arrived at Route 123 with no purpose other than to catch a Pokémon or two...or five. It all depended on how the day turned out. With Rose's assistance he crouched down to her stature, "Hm, your little bow is loose. Let me fix it for you." He loosened the pink ribbon from the handle of her mallet before wrapping and re-tying it tighter into a bow.

"There, all ready to wreak havoc, right?" Rose responded with enthusiasm. "That's right! Wreaking havoc in style!" He combed through his cotton candy tresses, ensuring that his own, matching ribbon was in place.

"You know, I hear that battling in pairs makes it easier to catch stronger Pokémon. Let's see if we can't charm our way into a partner, Rosie."

Sol hated the nagging. He was an adult! He had been an adult for a long, long time mentally and therefore didn't need to be nagged into enjoying himself. But he was also weak to the nagging, so a trip to an arcade was in order. He had always enjoyed playing video games with his brother. Surely this would be fun! Right? Right!

Lilycove had one of the highest-rated arcades he could find, so he picked that one. It only made sense. If he was going to pay to play, he was going to pay for quality. Luna walked alongside him gracefully, her stride always presented as though she could break into ballet at any moment.

He had been in Hoenn for a little bit but had not made any human friendships - not that he needed to. Sol was rather happy with his Pokemon friendships, for the record. He felt more of a kinship with them than he did with other people sometimes.

The arcade made him feel a little out of time, perhaps because it was bright outside but dark inside. He had walked aimlessly about the thing, starting a game always gave him anxiety, he equated it to buyer's remorse. What if he didn't enjoy it? He played a few shooting games, testing his aim, but for the most part, there was nothing worthy of his time. It didn't get him going the way research did.

Just as Sol was going to leave, a rather pretty woman seemed to be struggling to get a game to work. He had seen her come in, he had a bad habit of staring at beautiful people, and had watched her Pokemon try to play the game.

Typically, he would have just walked on by and not concerned himself with a stranger, but it was her Mimikyu who was trying to play. And he couldn't let a sweet little baby like that go without playing at least one game.

Sol approached with a hand on his hip, "Seems like you're having a bit of trouble there. Have you tried uncrumpling the bill?" There was a twinge of playful condescension in his voice.

"Oh, interesting! Do you think they're predatory by nature or do you think it's out of fear that they attack?" Sol tapped his chin twice, "Lots to think about..."

Unfortunately, Sol was oblivious to the Three Days War. He was oblivious to most of the plights Hoenn was facing as a newcomer and a fairly self-involved person. He had heard mention of war here and there but didn't think much of it. Wars were always happening, weren't they? Hadn't Navy mentioned Hoenn was at war? He should probably get out of his head more and pay attention to the world around him.

"Oh, there are plenty of worse ways to go. Slow dismemberment, for one. But yeah, it wouldn't be good." He shrugged, death wasn't as scary to him as it once was, "Don't worry. We'll be okay. I'm very lucky and you've got quite an impressive partner with you. She's an Aerodactyl, right?"

He was determined to make Shirley like him. He was always impressed by fossil Pokémon and although Aurorus fit his aesthetic, his favorite fossil Pokémon had always been Lilleep and its evolution. He was unsure why.

"Why not?" Sol shrugged again, bracing himself against the cave wall as they descended, "In truth, though, I was looking for something particular. Something that I didn't find." He stopped touching the wall once he found his footing a bit more, he remembered reading about how the oils in human skin fucked with the cavern ecosystem or something.

"Hey, I'll have you know that I'm technically a citizen of Hoenn. I have an apartment here and everything...but it is in Mauville." Sol flattened out a wrinkle in his shirt with his hands, "I've always been interested in the past, I guess. What about you? Why would you agree to poke about Granite Cave?"

A ramen shop was quite the odd place for a follow-up meeting but Sol was more than happy to be there. Navy had made it sound like if this went well he could get access to the League's research - and he had always wanted to try ramen. His brother had talked about it a few times when they lived in Kanto for Sol's treatments, but they had never been able to share some whilst they lived there.

Sol tapped his chopsticks to the side of his bowl absent-mindedly. Unlike Navy, Sol favored his left hand although not for any important reason. He had just always been a lefty. He gives thought to how he'll answer Navy. What is his story? Should he tell the truth? The whole truth?

"I'm from Kalos, originally." That's a good start, he thinks. "My family and I moved around a whole lot when I was younger so I don't have too many memories of it. We're from Anistar, specifically. Still own a house there, I think. I'm not sure anymore."

He tries not to give home too much of his thoughts. It always makes him melancholic.

"My mom is an astronomer, she's got, like, an obsession with celestial bodies. Hence the name Solstice. My dad was a businessman. He traded in all sorts of things, I think, we didn't talk about his job much. My older brother was a professional battler for a time. Used to host unofficial tournaments and stuff." Sol's sentence had trailed off and he had stopped looking at Navy directly, he was looking past him if anything, lost in what he had been saying.

Obliviousness had led him into Granite Cave the first time. He had been searching for something precious, something for which he almost lost his life. Obsession had brought him there this time, alongside Howard Slayte. He may have been the luckiest man on the planet given his chance encounter with Navy and more importantly: Nihilego.

He had dreamt of the ethereal creature every night since he laid eyes on her, he had to purchase a separate notebook just to write down his musings and theories on it as well as the other Ultra Beasts he had begun looking into.

"Hm? Oh, right. You got it, boss." Sol snapped, giving his companion the finger guns. It was an awkward moment and the minute Howard was no longer looking at him, Sol looked down at his hands in utter frustration. Why couldn't he be a normal, regular person?

"We don't need to worry about a horde of Gible, I've got plenty of Fairy-types on me. What we should be worried about are the Nihilego." For someone who said they should be worried, Sol seemed rather eager to see the glass jellyfish again. "Murals will be interesting. I appreciate you accompanying me! It will be nice to have another expert alongside me."

Sol, for the record, was not dressed in cave-delving gear. He looked ready for a day at the mall, maybe a grocery run, but a damp cave? No. He wasn't even wearing pants! Just shorts. Although, that was just his style. He'd rather die than be caught dead wearing something that wasn't stylish.

"I get that a lot. Usually it's not meant as a compliment. But it's never bothered me," Sol smiled innocently, "I'm just surprised you can keep up." At Navy's dismissal of his request, Sol's face faltered. Just when things were getting somewhere - oh, wait! Nevermind! False alarm! Stall the puppy-dog eyes.

Sol gasped with pre-excitement, it seemed like Navy was going to let him get a look at the League files. He wondered what else they had in there. He had always dreamed of getting access to the research of geniuses and finding something they overlooked leading him to being recognized as the greatest scientific mind of his generation.

"Team Rocket, huh? I think I would have faired much better against one of them. I know I look delicate, but there's a ruthlessness to me that you wouldn't believe." Another sweet smile. "Although, perhaps in practicality I wouldn't have the guts. It would all just depend, I suppose."

Sol listened intently to Navy, notebook and pen at the ready. "When they're young? It looked so foreign that I can hardly believe it grows. But it is a living creature, so, of course that was a given." He tapped his pen to his lips, making a thoughtful noise before scribbling in his journal, "So I was right! It is a neurotoxin! Devastating news that they can't be touched, though. I had theories..."

Sol clicked his pen, sheathing the tip, before tucking it and his notebook away. There was no way he was going to be able to take this thing with the sheriff standing right there and given that Navy was also a gym leader, fighting him for it wasn't going to be an option. Which left Sol utterly hopeless.

His face contorted into one of deep, difficult thought - until Navy spoke again.

"Hungry, yeah, I guess so." In truth, Sol didn't have much of an appetite, but being friends with a gym leader would certainly be helpful in the future, "WAIT! What? Really! I am absolutely starving! This would LITERALLY make my life!"

"What were you in the mood for? I will eat anything!"

Praise! Oh, how he lived for it! If the wretched blood in his veins had not come alive from the Nihilego, then encouragement from this man certainly would have done the trick. Unfortunately, his ramblings had all but drowned out the stranger's praise, his own mind was far more interesting.

Sol's fist clenched as Rose made impact, battling made his head rush! The swimming feeling delighted him beyond reason, like he could feel his insides! Wait, what was wrong with him? That was a weird reaction, right? No time for concern! The dragon had been tamed! Which meant Nihilego could be inspected!

He approached the corpse of the otherworldly creature, Rose followed alongside him, helping him kneel down next to it. He slapped at his person, feeling around for his notebook and pen. He found them, fumbled getting them out of his skirt pocket, and opened his notebook with haste.

"Glass-like appearance, tentacle-like appendages, an oddly bulbous shaped...head? This thing is practically see-through and yet..." Sol grumbled to himself as he scribbled in his journal, "Given the apparent change of behavior in the Garchomp, the poison it deals in is a neurotoxin. And then there's an opening of sorts to the flared-bit...what could that be for?"

Sol turned back to face Navy, "You said you were the Gym Leader here...which means you have access to League knowledge, yeah? Care to let a stranger get a look at the info on this thing? Oh, and is it safe to touch when it's dead? Or is it going to get, what I assume is, neurotoxin on me?"

Was he glancing past the fact that this man was a sheriff? Yes. Was he blatantly ignoring that he was likely trespassing? For sure. But there were pressing matters.

"Nihilego...a pretty name." He turned his attention back to the fallen creature before him, "So pretty."

[break][break]
"Oh, my name is Solstice. Solstice Arylide." He offered his hand out to Rose, who helped him up from his kneeling position. He opened his mouth to speak and looked down at his clothes, "Sometimes I forget how hard it is to tell given my face and my voice...and the skirt, but I'm actually a guy! But don't bother calling me Mister, Sol is better...And I have never been cave-diving in my life. I haven't done much of anything to be honest."

He thought for a moment, "I did ALMOST fall into a quarry during my research, once. But I didn't. Which is good. Now that I think about it, I have a bad habit of getting into danger. Sorry, I'm rambling. The Nihilego. What do you know about it? I've never seen one so up close...and frankly forgot about them for a while. I was pre-occupied and whatnot."

He paused again, holding his hands out in front of him as though trying to make time stop, "Sorry, manners, thank you for saving me. Twice...it seems."

Sol cocked his head - this predator that was about to devour him belonged to this man? Wait, in hindsight, maybe she was just after the Nihilego and he was just in the way? He took a deep breath, the damp cave air filling him, trying to return to a semblance of calm.

"Yours? Well, she's rather pretty - that aside, though, I'm quite curious of what that THING is. You seem familiar?" Sol stretched his throwing arm, pulling it across his chest with his right hand until his shoulder popped, "I am just DYING to get a hold of it. I mean - it can poison things with just a touch? And the poison doesn't work the same as a standard Pokémon's poison, like, that's just incredible! Extraordinary, even!"

His chest rose and fall, excitement had blinded him to the danger he was ACTIVELY facing. What would the poison do to a person if it touched them? Would humans react the same? What was this creature's origin?

Navy's command to Hattori halted Sol's rampant, raging train of thought. "Oh, an impressive use of tactics," Sol spoke under his breath, "I don't know if I have anything like that up my sleeve."

He used his empty hand to grab Luna's Pokeball before releasing both her and Rose from their capsules. Rose tapped the ground with her mallet as Luna gave a pirouette - behaviors taught by Sol to impress any possible onlookers whenever his Pokémon were put into play.

"Impressive as always, ladies, but we're in a life or death situation." His Pokémon gave a curt nod, "Luna use Hypnosis. Rose, Play Rough and try and stay out of the other Pokémon's way. Wait! Rose, you go first. No need to bash the beast awake."

His Pokémon respond in affirmation. Rose, sluggish due to the weight of her mallet, charges forward at the Garchomp. Swinging her hammer arm with ferocity, she intends to make contact. Luna emits a psionic force with a graceful bow, forcing thoughts of sweet slumber into the Pokémon's mind.

"Hopefully we don't get in your way, uh, what was your name?" He paused, "Is now a bad time to ask that?"

All time seemed to come to a standstill in the moment his eyes met those of his would-be predator. There was not time enough for him to register his body's every panicked reaction. Nor was there enough time for him to logistically register that She was preparing to attack - but in his heart, in his primal soul, he knew she was coming.

She lunged. He ducked. With his eyes squeezed shut, he could hear her jaws clench. He didn't feel her teeth sink into his flesh...were her fangs truly so sharp? Something pulls him from danger and, through the deduction that his torso and legs had stayed connected, confirms that he had not been a little snack for the land-shark.

He braved a look, a familiar Pokemon held him steady. He recognized it as a Greninja, a Pokemon that was native to his home region of Kalos, albeit a very small and shiny one. This normally would have intrigued him - he had a vast many theories about the genetics of shiny Pokemon. But there was a far more intriguing presence in the cave: Nihilego.

Solstice wriggled free from the Greninja's grasp, oh what he wouldn't give to get his hands on the beautiful beast's body.

"Hm? Oh, I know it is. That's why I'm here." His voice trembled as he spoke, but he was finding himself. He didn't bother correcting the sheriff, nor would his voice give the man cause for correction - although now would be an odd time to do so anyway. "That wasn't what I came here for, but it certainly will be what I return for."

He gestured to the Nihilego, ignorant of the change in the Garchomp's demeanor. His mind was racing again. This creature was beautiful, ethereal. It had solidified itself as his new obsession in an instant.

"Huh?" Sol's head snapped to Navy, "Uh, yeah. Sorry..."

Sol stood, and he grasped Luna's Pokeball, "I can help - somewhat. My Pokemon are strong...but probably not strong enough for this. I know fairy types make dragons agitated, should I?"

Willful ignorance allowed him to ignore the guttural roar of whatever beast shared the darkness with him, but it would not allow him to dismiss the death mewl of whatever creature had become prey. A shiver ran up his spine turning his blood to ice in his veins. Rose gripped his leg with her free, non-mallet-wielding hand.

Typically, in a scenario like this, he would comfort his frightened friend, but the very real danger of the lurker in the dark rendered him unable. The persistent panicked pumping of his pathetic heart drowned out the lumbering steps of what approached. His eyes shifted, leering into the abyss desperately trying to make out the form of the creature.

There was a dryness in his mouth as the dragon came into view. His mind raced with a thousand unthinkable thoughts. The red tint to her teeth brought forth visions of his death: quick but agonizing. What did he know of Garchomp? His mind was failing him. They were large - obviously. They were also incredibly fast and strong. He did not know much about them as a species.

His brain finally processed a useful thought: he knew generally about dragon types!

"Rose, get back in your ball." He held a pink decorated Pokeball out, "Now."

He ignored her weak protest, ushering her into the safety of her capsule. Depending on the size of her last meal, there was a very real chance he was on the menu. He knew Garchomp had large appetites, as did most larger active Pokemon.

The hastened rise and fall of his chest served only to demonstrate and exacerbate his panicked state of mind. He was a genius, damn it all! Why could he not think of a strategy here? Logic and reason were failing him (as was hope).

Sol took a shaky breath, he wasn't sure if his vision had gone blurry or if his brain had rendered the world out of focus to prepare him for his demise. He couldn't run, he couldn't hide. His Pokemon were all in the safety of their Pokeballs where they might be safe should the Garchomp swallow him whole - if Pokeballs held up against stomach acid.

"P-please, I can't die like this. I have a lot to live for...well, not really. But I'd l-like to stay alive anyways," He held up his hands defensively. What else could he do? Oh, what he wouldn't give for another more pathetic prey to run by. Or even another hapless traveler to throw to the wolves while he made his escape.

Solstice stood with a pocket-journal open, eyes squinted from the dim light emitted by his cheap headlamp. He was desperately trying to read it to no avail. When had his eyesight become so poor in the dark? He used to read by dim light all the time! He had basically been trained for this - everybody knows that when you strain your eyesight to read in the dark you're strengthening it and definitely not making your eyesight worse from all the unnecessary strain.

Rose obliged her trainer, taking her mallet to another rock. After a few little love-taps from the Tinkatuff, the boulder shattered. Solstice approached and dropped to his knees on the wet stone floor. He placed the journal back into the pocket of his jacket, sifting through the smashed stone. "Wh-where is it? Those little crystals are supposed to pop up in caves JUST like this one!"

Rose looked at him, then placed one of her hands on him. Sol looked to her, his expression softened, "Don't worry, Rose, we'll find 'em."

With a little difficulty and Rose's help, Sol stood up. He nodded his thanks to his partner before looking at his surroundings...how deep in the cave was he? How long had he been in here? Where was the exit? He looked quickly down the cavern, first to his left, then to his right. Anxiety settled in his stomach, not again!

"HELLO? CAN ANYONE HEAR ME?" Sol shouted into the void, Rose looked up at him confusedly, "Hm? Oh, that's just in case anyone is close by and knows where the exit is. We don't want to start walking and find ourselves even deeper in Granite Cave now, do we?"

Rose nodded her approval and Sol smiled, "We give it thirty minutes for someone to walk by, and if that doesn't work out, then we pick a direction and start walking. How does that sound?"
