Solstice stood with a pocket-journal open, eyes squinted from the dim light emitted by his cheap headlamp. He was desperately trying to read it to no avail. When had his eyesight become so poor in the dark? He used to read by dim light all the time! He had basically been trained for this - everybody knows that when you strain your eyesight to read in the dark you're strengthening it and definitely not making your eyesight worse from all the unnecessary strain.

Rose obliged her trainer, taking her mallet to another rock. After a few little love-taps from the Tinkatuff, the boulder shattered. Solstice approached and dropped to his knees on the wet stone floor. He placed the journal back into the pocket of his jacket, sifting through the smashed stone. "Wh-where is it? Those little crystals are supposed to pop up in caves JUST like this one!"

Rose looked at him, then placed one of her hands on him. Sol looked to her, his expression softened, "Don't worry, Rose, we'll find 'em."

With a little difficulty and Rose's help, Sol stood up. He nodded his thanks to his partner before looking at his surroundings...how deep in the cave was he? How long had he been in here? Where was the exit? He looked quickly down the cavern, first to his left, then to his right. Anxiety settled in his stomach, not again!

"HELLO? CAN ANYONE HEAR ME?" Sol shouted into the void, Rose looked up at him confusedly, "Hm? Oh, that's just in case anyone is close by and knows where the exit is. We don't want to start walking and find ourselves even deeper in Granite Cave now, do we?"

Rose nodded her approval and Sol smiled, "We give it thirty minutes for someone to walk by, and if that doesn't work out, then we pick a direction and start walking. How does that sound?"

This cave on the edge of everywhere and nowhere is not for the faint of heart. When he calls out into the darkness of far tunnels, there is an answer. What responds is not a concerned human or another hapless cave delver.[break][break]
Something roars. It is the deep, primal roar of a species that was ancient when the world was young. Dust rumbles in the cave. Steps patter through the darkness, one after another. Something else raises a cry. That cry is cut short by the sound of teeth ripping into tendons. Whatever beast has made this cave its home has claimed a new victim.[break][break]
A Garchomp lumbers into view. Judging by the markings on its fins, the Garchomp is female. She sniffs at the air, looks at the newcomer. A hint of fresh blood implies that it has just consumed something, had a meal. The meal affords Sol a moment where instincts are replaced by curiosity.[break][break]
This she-dragon looks at him. Golden eyes take in every detail. Young, just barely old enough to be allowed to make foolish mistakes. Fresh, a good meal. She turns her attention to the Pokemon at his side. Rose is all but dismissed. Her eyes are for Sol.[break][break]
Muscles quiver. It begins to move forward. One slow step, approaching the human. It moves like it owns this place, and that anything existing within this domain does so because she allows them to do so.[break][break]
And to think, this beast is one of the guardians, meant to keep people like Sol safe from the real horrors lurking within the cave. Somewhere far away, footsteps beat against granite and loose dirt. Rapid human footsteps, Tauros leather boots. Another human is coming.[break][break]
But the she-dragon is closer.

Willful ignorance allowed him to ignore the guttural roar of whatever beast shared the darkness with him, but it would not allow him to dismiss the death mewl of whatever creature had become prey. A shiver ran up his spine turning his blood to ice in his veins. Rose gripped his leg with her free, non-mallet-wielding hand.

Typically, in a scenario like this, he would comfort his frightened friend, but the very real danger of the lurker in the dark rendered him unable. The persistent panicked pumping of his pathetic heart drowned out the lumbering steps of what approached. His eyes shifted, leering into the abyss desperately trying to make out the form of the creature.

There was a dryness in his mouth as the dragon came into view. His mind raced with a thousand unthinkable thoughts. The red tint to her teeth brought forth visions of his death: quick but agonizing. What did he know of Garchomp? His mind was failing him. They were large - obviously. They were also incredibly fast and strong. He did not know much about them as a species.

His brain finally processed a useful thought: he knew generally about dragon types!

"Rose, get back in your ball." He held a pink decorated Pokeball out, "Now."

He ignored her weak protest, ushering her into the safety of her capsule. Depending on the size of her last meal, there was a very real chance he was on the menu. He knew Garchomp had large appetites, as did most larger active Pokemon.

The hastened rise and fall of his chest served only to demonstrate and exacerbate his panicked state of mind. He was a genius, damn it all! Why could he not think of a strategy here? Logic and reason were failing him (as was hope).

Sol took a shaky breath, he wasn't sure if his vision had gone blurry or if his brain had rendered the world out of focus to prepare him for his demise. He couldn't run, he couldn't hide. His Pokemon were all in the safety of their Pokeballs where they might be safe should the Garchomp swallow him whole - if Pokeballs held up against stomach acid.

"P-please, I can't die like this. I have a lot to live for...well, not really. But I'd l-like to stay alive anyways," He held up his hands defensively. What else could he do? Oh, what he wouldn't give for another more pathetic prey to run by. Or even another hapless traveler to throw to the wolves while he made his escape.

Garchomp’s eyes tinge sad, listening to the human’s words. They make her pause once more. Golden eyes bear into this errant human’s soul, judging them as only a Pokemon can. She grows stock still, standing up straight. Anyone familiar with the taxonomy of their kind would recognize it as a sign she is readying herself for a fight.[break][break]
She lunges. For a dragon her size, she moves with astounding speed. She turns into a deep blue blur. Her fangs sink into something behind Sol. An unearthly howl accompanies the dark cave being washed in light.[break][break]
Caught in her jaws is a creature from another dimension. The nihilego tries to protest. A Garchomp’s fangs are powerful enough to break solid stone, as the tunnels beneath Granite Cave prove. Her fangs sink slowly into the intruder. Nihilego howls, giving the Garchomp a gentle caress.[break][break]
“Watch out!” Sol is pulled away, smoke hiding him. A Pokemon guides him and his to safety. A man in a dark brown hat stands ready, gunmetal eyes looking past Sol. They focus on the Nihilego, soon crushed by Garchomp’s fangs.[break][break]
Sol is embraced by a Greninja, the tiniest example of his kind that most will ever see. He is much smaller than an average specimen, more a large Frogadier than a true fully evolved Greninja. Scars line him. An eyepatch covers one eye, dark as the skin burned black by Groudon’s heat.[break][break]
“Miss, this cave is dangerous.” The tall cowboy says, ignorant of Sol’s gender. “Pokemon from another world come through here.” His eyes behold evidence of a Nihilego, one of many that try to float up from a midnight sea. There is no reason for him to hide that truth from Sol.[break][break]
“…shit.” He curses as the Garchomp turns to face them once more. Her pupils are wide, a purple sore on her shoulder. With its last breath, the Nihilego caressed her. It spurs her to advance upon them once more.[break][break]
“Can you stand?” He asks, both Greninja and trainer moving to interpose themselves between Sol and the dragon.

All time seemed to come to a standstill in the moment his eyes met those of his would-be predator. There was not time enough for him to register his body's every panicked reaction. Nor was there enough time for him to logistically register that She was preparing to attack - but in his heart, in his primal soul, he knew she was coming.

She lunged. He ducked. With his eyes squeezed shut, he could hear her jaws clench. He didn't feel her teeth sink into his flesh...were her fangs truly so sharp? Something pulls him from danger and, through the deduction that his torso and legs had stayed connected, confirms that he had not been a little snack for the land-shark.

He braved a look, a familiar Pokemon held him steady. He recognized it as a Greninja, a Pokemon that was native to his home region of Kalos, albeit a very small and shiny one. This normally would have intrigued him - he had a vast many theories about the genetics of shiny Pokemon. But there was a far more intriguing presence in the cave: Nihilego.

Solstice wriggled free from the Greninja's grasp, oh what he wouldn't give to get his hands on the beautiful beast's body.

"Hm? Oh, I know it is. That's why I'm here." His voice trembled as he spoke, but he was finding himself. He didn't bother correcting the sheriff, nor would his voice give the man cause for correction - although now would be an odd time to do so anyway. "That wasn't what I came here for, but it certainly will be what I return for."

He gestured to the Nihilego, ignorant of the change in the Garchomp's demeanor. His mind was racing again. This creature was beautiful, ethereal. It had solidified itself as his new obsession in an instant.

"Huh?" Sol's head snapped to Navy, "Uh, yeah. Sorry..."

Sol stood, and he grasped Luna's Pokeball, "I can help - somewhat. My Pokemon are strong...but probably not strong enough for this. I know fairy types make dragons agitated, should I?"

Such little creatures give the land-dragon pause. The dark Greninja stands as stalwart guardian for those behind him. A kunai formed out of water sits in his hand, yet unused.[break][break]
She sniffs the air, this she-dragon. Her golden eyes settle on Sol. Her twisted mind tells her that the new human is an interloper, a threat to the cave. Even with her mate’s tamer at Sol’s side, there is enough casus belli for aggression. She takes another step forward while the humans talk.[break][break]
“She’s one of mine.” The bearded man doesn’t dwell on Sol’s admission of intrusion. Matters of human law matter little in a battle to survive. “Been poisoned by that thing.” A curt nod to the shattered body of the Nihilego settles the question of which thing he’s referring to.[break][break]
“Gotta weaken her, get her back in her ball, and get out.” Rummaging through his pack, he pulls out an ultra ball. “If we throw her in now, she’s liable to break out again.” Another step. She’s almost upon the small one.[break][break]
“Hattori, go!” Hattori looses his kunai, an ice beam freezing the water mid-air. It strikes, sending the she-dragon back a few steps. She shrieks.[break][break]
“Fairies, yeah. Ice, too. If you got anything that can help her clock out, it’d be much appreciated.” His voice carries a quiet urgency. Whatever comes next, Sol and the stranger’s continued survival depend upon one another in these next few moments.

Sol cocked his head - this predator that was about to devour him belonged to this man? Wait, in hindsight, maybe she was just after the Nihilego and he was just in the way? He took a deep breath, the damp cave air filling him, trying to return to a semblance of calm.

"Yours? Well, she's rather pretty - that aside, though, I'm quite curious of what that THING is. You seem familiar?" Sol stretched his throwing arm, pulling it across his chest with his right hand until his shoulder popped, "I am just DYING to get a hold of it. I mean - it can poison things with just a touch? And the poison doesn't work the same as a standard Pokémon's poison, like, that's just incredible! Extraordinary, even!"

His chest rose and fall, excitement had blinded him to the danger he was ACTIVELY facing. What would the poison do to a person if it touched them? Would humans react the same? What was this creature's origin?

Navy's command to Hattori halted Sol's rampant, raging train of thought. "Oh, an impressive use of tactics," Sol spoke under his breath, "I don't know if I have anything like that up my sleeve."

He used his empty hand to grab Luna's Pokeball before releasing both her and Rose from their capsules. Rose tapped the ground with her mallet as Luna gave a pirouette - behaviors taught by Sol to impress any possible onlookers whenever his Pokémon were put into play.

"Impressive as always, ladies, but we're in a life or death situation." His Pokémon gave a curt nod, "Luna use Hypnosis. Rose, Play Rough and try and stay out of the other Pokémon's way. Wait! Rose, you go first. No need to bash the beast awake."

His Pokémon respond in affirmation. Rose, sluggish due to the weight of her mallet, charges forward at the Garchomp. Swinging her hammer arm with ferocity, she intends to make contact. Luna emits a psionic force with a graceful bow, forcing thoughts of sweet slumber into the Pokémon's mind.

"Hopefully we don't get in your way, uh, what was your name?" He paused, "Is now a bad time to ask that?"

Sol’s excitement brings a smile to the stranger’s face. It doesn’t reach his eyes. Those remain weary, focused on the battle. Concern mingles with weariness. There’ll be time to discuss, protect, and advise when the battle’s done.[break][break]
“Got a good head on you.” He comments, independent of Sol’s many questions. “Most people would lose their cool, even with some girls like yours backing you up.”[break][break]
Three on one proves a powerful, potent combination. Hattori seems used to working with other Pokemon. Keeping his ear open, he hears Sol’s commands. Plans for them. Works them into his own. Shooting past the Garchomp on a wave of water, he lets the younger Pokemon take the lead. One with her mallet, the other with the hypnosis.[break][break]
An ice beam, more direct this time, takes her in the back. Cold seeps in, reminds the she-dragon that it is winter. Were it not for her contact with humans, she would be asleep, hibernating until spring’s thaw. Golden eyes follow hypnotic patterns, lulling her into sleep.[break][break]
“Navy.” Sol’s accompaniment says, taking a few steps forward. He does not fear the dragon. Respects them, yes, but he doesn’t fear them. They can sniff fear. No tamer worth their salt can allow that scent to take root.[break][break]
His Garchomp disappears in a brilliant flash of red. She sits in her pokeball. A moment of struggle gives way to a click, confirming the completion of a lock sequence. Freezing ice, sleep, and poison prove too potent for the dragon.[break][break]
“Dewford’s gym leader and its sheriff. It’s my job to make sure people don’t die in here. Rocket likes to sneak in sometimes.” He does not seem to take Sol for a Rocket, although they’re recruiting every day. A curt not turns his attention towards the fallen angel.[break][break]
“That thing’s called a Nihilego. Surprised you don't remember them from the Ultra Beast war, a few years back.” A war he himself sat out. “…what’s your name, Miss? You go cave diving a lot?”

Praise! Oh, how he lived for it! If the wretched blood in his veins had not come alive from the Nihilego, then encouragement from this man certainly would have done the trick. Unfortunately, his ramblings had all but drowned out the stranger's praise, his own mind was far more interesting.

Sol's fist clenched as Rose made impact, battling made his head rush! The swimming feeling delighted him beyond reason, like he could feel his insides! Wait, what was wrong with him? That was a weird reaction, right? No time for concern! The dragon had been tamed! Which meant Nihilego could be inspected!

He approached the corpse of the otherworldly creature, Rose followed alongside him, helping him kneel down next to it. He slapped at his person, feeling around for his notebook and pen. He found them, fumbled getting them out of his skirt pocket, and opened his notebook with haste.

"Glass-like appearance, tentacle-like appendages, an oddly bulbous shaped...head? This thing is practically see-through and yet..." Sol grumbled to himself as he scribbled in his journal, "Given the apparent change of behavior in the Garchomp, the poison it deals in is a neurotoxin. And then there's an opening of sorts to the flared-bit...what could that be for?"

Sol turned back to face Navy, "You said you were the Gym Leader here...which means you have access to League knowledge, yeah? Care to let a stranger get a look at the info on this thing? Oh, and is it safe to touch when it's dead? Or is it going to get, what I assume is, neurotoxin on me?"

Was he glancing past the fact that this man was a sheriff? Yes. Was he blatantly ignoring that he was likely trespassing? For sure. But there were pressing matters.

"Nihilego...a pretty name." He turned his attention back to the fallen creature before him, "So pretty."

"Oh, my name is Solstice. Solstice Arylide." He offered his hand out to Rose, who helped him up from his kneeling position. He opened his mouth to speak and looked down at his clothes, "Sometimes I forget how hard it is to tell given my face and my voice...and the skirt, but I'm actually a guy! But don't bother calling me Mister, Sol is better...And I have never been cave-diving in my life. I haven't done much of anything to be honest."

He thought for a moment, "I did ALMOST fall into a quarry during my research, once. But I didn't. Which is good. Now that I think about it, I have a bad habit of getting into danger. Sorry, I'm rambling. The Nihilego. What do you know about it? I've never seen one so up close...and frankly forgot about them for a while. I was pre-occupied and whatnot."

He paused again, holding his hands out in front of him as though trying to make time stop, "Sorry, manners, thank you for saving me. Twice...it seems."

“Hmm.” Is his ambiguous answer to notion that Sol is a man. Sol’s prettier than quite a few of the women he’s met, but the sheriff keeps that to himself. Instead, he focuses on the younger man’s abject curiosity. Curiosity, he has learned, kills here. Curiosity leads to knowledge. Knowledge leads to misery.[break][break]
“You talk a lot, Sol.” In the luminescent glow of the dead Nihilego, Navy smiles. “Lot to unpack in what you have to say. Not in the business of letting strangers take a look at these things, no.” It could end there, but he is, at his core, a bleeding heart.[break][break]
“…but maybe I can for a friend. Hoenn’s at war, Sol. Don’t know you. Rocket likes to try and sneak into this cave. Could’ve ran into someone from there, if you weren’t lucky.” And, like the false shepherds most Rockets are, they would have tempted him with knowledge, coaxed him down the road to hell with all his good intentions.[break][break]
“I’ll give you the short version ‘bout how dangerous these guys are. They’re damn hard to kill, usually. My Garchomps find ‘em while they’re young, and their jaws have, uh,” a momentary pause while he searches for the right words, “a bite with enough pressure to break through their rock. Their neurotoxin’s bad business. And yeah, it’s not safe to touch ‘em after they’re dead.”[break][break]
A small pause, an exasperated sigh. Lifting his hat, he rubs at his forehead. Contemplating what to do, he makes a snap second decision.[break][break]
“…you hungry? Know plenty of good diners, up in Dewford. I’ll call up the rangers. They’ll transport the body to the local Pokemon Center. If our talk goes well, I’ll see about letting you have a look at its body – a proper one, with good equipment.”

"I get that a lot. Usually it's not meant as a compliment. But it's never bothered me," Sol smiled innocently, "I'm just surprised you can keep up." At Navy's dismissal of his request, Sol's face faltered. Just when things were getting somewhere - oh, wait! Nevermind! False alarm! Stall the puppy-dog eyes.

Sol gasped with pre-excitement, it seemed like Navy was going to let him get a look at the League files. He wondered what else they had in there. He had always dreamed of getting access to the research of geniuses and finding something they overlooked leading him to being recognized as the greatest scientific mind of his generation.

"Team Rocket, huh? I think I would have faired much better against one of them. I know I look delicate, but there's a ruthlessness to me that you wouldn't believe." Another sweet smile. "Although, perhaps in practicality I wouldn't have the guts. It would all just depend, I suppose."

Sol listened intently to Navy, notebook and pen at the ready. "When they're young? It looked so foreign that I can hardly believe it grows. But it is a living creature, so, of course that was a given." He tapped his pen to his lips, making a thoughtful noise before scribbling in his journal, "So I was right! It is a neurotoxin! Devastating news that they can't be touched, though. I had theories..."

Sol clicked his pen, sheathing the tip, before tucking it and his notebook away. There was no way he was going to be able to take this thing with the sheriff standing right there and given that Navy was also a gym leader, fighting him for it wasn't going to be an option. Which left Sol utterly hopeless.

His face contorted into one of deep, difficult thought - until Navy spoke again.

"Hungry, yeah, I guess so." In truth, Sol didn't have much of an appetite, but being friends with a gym leader would certainly be helpful in the future, "WAIT! What? Really! I am absolutely starving! This would LITERALLY make my life!"

"What were you in the mood for? I will eat anything!"
