It only took a matter of minutes for Zoë to get the sense that Ever was as awkward around people as she was. At her apology, the man simply waved her off and kept walking. Zoë didn't mind traveling in silence, so she kept her mouth closed, her eyes peeled, and her ears open.

They went a ways further when suddenly, Ever stopped and held up a hand. Zoë came to a halt and so did Devereux. She heard it as soon as her foot falls faded away. The subtle cry coming from the woods to their right. Ever took off and Zoë wasn't far behind. Devereux bounded through the brush next to her as they made their way through the forest.

It wasn't long before they came across a dark form. A pokemon with red eyes and a black mane of hair that ran down the length of its body. A mightyena. But this one had been burned by something, a large gash left in its flank, the hair singed off and the skin underneath red and swollen.

Zoë had been told to go to an abandoned pool house that day to partner with a ranger she'd never met before. She wasn't too bothered by it. Alright, maybe she was a bit nervous. But she always was when meeting new people. She wore a pair of black skinny jeans and an oversize hoodie with the words Kiss my Absol as she approached the building. She saw before much of anything else that there was a man there, sprawled on the sidewalk with a camera in front of his face.

Before Zoë could really react, whirlipede came barreling towards, stopping just short of ramming into her legs. It stared up at Zoë with narrowed eyes, seemingly analyzing her. Devereux, Zoë's absol, was at her side. His haunches raised at the unexpected appearance of the other pokemon and his upper lip curled slightly.

Its trainer was quick to sit up then. He called out to the whirlipede and greeted her all in one sentence. Zoë looked up with wide eyes, but pressed her lips closed and nodded once. "Yeah. That's me."

Zoë stepped forward as the other ranger held out his hand. She shook it firmly. "Zoë Crow. Nice to meet you too." She looked around, dropping her hand and shoving both into her pockets. Devereux sat at her side and began licking his paw in a feline manner. Her eyes settled on the pool house beind them. Some of the windows were boarded up, others were broken. It looked dark inside, but Zoë could have sworn she saw something move. "We're here for an infestation, right?" she asked Audric.

Zoë watched as Dizzy, Zachary's Delphox, approached Devereux. The absol stared at the pokemon from the corner of his eye, but made no move in response. Even so, Zoë heard the slight huff the pokemon made under his breath as Dizzy sniffed the white fur on his head. Zoë's eyes narrowed as Zachary smiled at her. She wasn't sure why, but she felt as if the boy was being genuine. He really was happy that she'd offered to go with him into the temple. She was so used to being shunned, but here was someone who obviously wanted her company.

Zoë gave Zachary a tentative smile in response. She stepped aside to let Dizzy through with his torch. She let Zachary go first, following with Devereux close behind her. As they walked, she saw the carvings and paintings on the walls. People and pokemon, all in various arrays of colors and forms. Zoë's eyes flitted from one image to another curiously, the light from Dizzy's torch flickering over the walls eerily.

Zoë faced forward once more, her eyes on Zachary's back. He was young, that was obvious. She wondered how old he really was though? It wasn't that odd for a kid to be out alone with his pokemon. Hell, plenty of kids traveled the region in the same way. But to be out at night? Trying to explore a temple like this?

"Did you say you were looking for treasure?" she asked.

Zoë couldn't help but huff at Ever's response. She had known they were going to help with things at Lavaridge. What she was wondering was why they were so far from the city and where they were going exactly. Zoë refrained from rolling her eyes and instead nodded her thanks when Ever slowed his pace so she could keep up with ease. Devereux continued walking next to her, staring straight ahead without taking notice of either ranger accompanying him.

"Yes, I know that." she said. "Are we just...searching for a pokemon to help then?" Zoë wasn't technically a new ranger. At least, not an inexperienced one. But still, this was the kind of mission she was usually assigned. And to be honest...she was a bit lost without a more direct objective to accomplish. She held the handkerchief to her face and turned her gaze to Ever. "I'm sorry. I'm not usually so..." Angry? Irritated? Confused?

Devereux huffed, as if agreeing with her. Zoë shot the absol a glare.

Zoë truly didn't mean to be rude. It wasn't her nature to be mean, it was just that...well, the boy had caught her by surprise. She hadn't been expecting for anyone else to be there at night. She'd wanted a bit of solitude, if she were being honest. But she'd been interrupted. Was that his fault? No, not at all. But she'd treated him like it had been, and that was wrong of her. She watched him deflate a bit as he responded.

Zoë sighed and shook her head, looking away from the boy and back out toward the view off the side of the mountain. "No...I'm sorry." She had to apologize. She wasn't in the habit of not taking responsibility for things that were most definitely her fault. Her gaze flickered back to him as he rubbed the back of his neck almost shyly. She pressed her lips together, not necessarily deep in thought, but definitely reconsidering how she'd first seen him. It was entirely possible he was like her. Not good with people, no, not just that. Bad with people. Socially inept and uneducated.

Zoë nodded, shifting on her feet to face him fully. "I'm Zoë. Zoë Crow." She gestured to her absol. "And this is Devereux."

In the wake of Zachary's delphox's noises, Devereux remained silent, simply staring at the other pokemon without a hint of emotion. It was really nothing unusual.

Zachary spoke and Zoë almost smiled. Almost. Instead, she bit her lip to refrain from laughing and stepped towards the boy. "Yes. I'm here on assignment. I'm trying to find something for a museum here in Hoenn." Zoë stared at him, her eyes calculating. "It's dangerous to roam around at night, you know. Especially in a temple like this." She half turned, her eyes still on him. "If you would rather not go alone, I don't mind going in together."

She said it matter-of-factly. As if it were the most logical thing in the world, which in her mind, it was.

Zoë lacked a lot of traits that she might have liked to have. She excelled in few areas, but in those areas, she was almost second to none. One of these was her sense of justice. She could still remember being a child, having someone in a position of power, someone older, wiser, do something horrible or unkind. Those were the days when Zoë was often told to stay quiet. That she shouldn't speak unless spoken to. It was still one of the greatest wrongs of her life. Something she couldn't - or perhaps simply something she wouldn't let go of. She wasn't usually the forgiving kind. But that was even less true when it came to silencing the innocent and the weak in the wake of injustice.

The Calryx needed a story. Zoë knew she would always wonder what might have happened if she didn't give one. So it was under that tree, the sun slanting between the leaves and branches overhead, that Zoë began to speak. She sat down cross legged, making herself comfortable as she began.

The fundamental crux of justice in balance. Tip the scales too far in one direction, and injustice is created. Zoë bit her lip gently and placed her palms on her knees. My mother once told me that there was a little girl who was shunned by all the other children. She lived in a tiny town by the sea and had no one in her life. She was so very lonely...she truly couldn't imagine a more miserable existence.

But there, by the sea each evening at sunset, a dratini would come to the shore and greet her at the docks. Maybe it was fate the first time they met. Maybe it was coincidence and meant nothing. Only this couldn't be true, because it did mean something. To this girl, it meant everything. She could hardly believe it when the dratini came back, night after night. But come back she did. And each time, the two grew closer, reaching a breaking point. Tipping the scales.

One day... Zoë shifted on the ground, clearing her throat. She could feel the emotion swelling in her chest, but she didn't want to act on it in any way or make it known to the Calryx. One day, the girl was followed by the other children to the docks. They saw her, and they saw the dratini. They called her names. They pushed her down. They forced sand into her mouth and she rolled over and spit it out while they laughed above her.

The dratini didn't like seeing her friend being treated this way. She lashed out at the children with a pulse of water. They all fell down on the wooden planks, but one - just one - fell into the water below. It was true that he almost drowned. It was true that the dratini was blamed, no matter how much the little girl tried to speak. She tried to say it was her own fault. She tried to take the blame.

The little girl came back to the beach the next night, but the dratini never came. She came again, and again, but her friend was never there.

Zoë fell silent. She realized that it wasn't the best story. It wasn't even that compelling. But at least she'd drawn from personal experience. No matter how hard she'd tried, her voice had shaken slightly close to the end. At the very least, the Calryx seemed pleased with her offering.

Zoë stood near an entrance to the ruins of Pyre Mountain. Stars glittered overhead and she was overcome by the quiet that came with being in a public place so late at night. Devereux, her absol, sat by her leg, staring out at the land below them. They were on a cliff side essentially, giving them a fantastic view of Hoenn below and the night sky above. She knew Devereux preferred the dark and the quiet. It was his way. Zoë couldn't help but agree, having always been alone for the most part throughout her life. [break][break]
Zoë sighed as she took in the scene before her. She didn't know what she was waiting for, standing there with her hands on her hips. Maybe she expected something to happen. Or maybe for someone to stop her. Going into ancient ruins alone and without a rope (again) was likely not the best idea. She had Devereux, Scotch, and Jinx, yes. But there was a stark contrast between pokemon and people. Perhaps controversial, but also undeniable.

Zoë's head turned as the sound of footsteps penetrated the silence. Devereux didn't turn, but she could tell he was paying close attention because his fur bristled slightly at the curve of his back. Zoë saw a form come into view. A voice called out and Zoë stared for several moments as he came closer before responding.

"What? She frowned, her voice coming out slightly irritated. "What kind of question is that?
[break][break]
She didn't mean to be so confrontational. In fact, it didn't even occur to her that her words might come across that way in the moment. She was irritated with life, and so she was irritated with him. And besides that, she didn't owe him her name. Why would he assume she would just tell him who she was? He was a stranger at night on the top of Mount Pyre. There were a million better questions to ask, and yet he'd gone with that one.

Zoë turned her gaze to Elise curiously, wondering how she could be so sure about not getting lost. Maybe she was being as attentive to their surroundings as Zoë was. Either way, so long as on of them had a rope it didn't particularly matter.

She was so focused on her companion that Zoë almost missed the appearance of the two pokemon in the cave. Devereux noticed before she did, perking up and stepping forward and slightly in front of his trainer protectively. Zoë couldn't help but perk up at seeing the Froslass lingering at the edge of the cavern. She'd wanted to catch one for some time, but the opportunity hadn't presented itself before now. She was grateful when Elise focused her attention on the dewgong, leaving froslass to watch the sudden altercation with large hooded eyes.

"Devereux...." Zoë's voice didn't grow any louder than usual, but her absol seemed to hear her regardless. He bounded forward with dexterity brought its bluish claws down across the froslass' front. The ice and ghost type pokemon seemed momentarily confused at being attacked, but blinked and swooped in just as quickly, pressing its mouth to the top of Devereux's head. A flush tinged aura emanated from the action and Devereux staggered back, looking slightly dazed. Zoë ground her teeth together and snapped her fingers, hoping to get Devereux's attention.

The air was hardly breathable where they were in that moment. Zoë had held a handkerchief over her face as Devereux, her absol, walked along beside her. Jinx wasn't far behind, stepping along and looking at everything almost like a toddler. Scotch sat atop Zoë's head, looking around with his mouth slightly open as he gawked at their surroundings in obvious wonder. Having pokemon in many ways was like having children in Zoë's limited experience. She'd never had pokemon before Devereux. Even in Lavender town her mother had disliked them quite a bit and so they'd never had even one around.

Zoë jogged to catch up to Ever. "Hey!" she called out. "Where are we going?"

She'd followed her blindly, expecting for it to be clear what she had in mind as soon as they were far enough. But looking around, Zoë still wasn't sure.

Zoë wasn't a stranger to the cold. She'd found out early on that she liked the chill in the air, the freshness that came with every breath. She wore a heavy jacket and several sweaters, but no puffy coat to block her movements. Devereux, her absol, stepped silently near her side as she followed her companion through the tunnel-like entrance of the cave. The woman's mismagius was close to her front and Zoë had to be careful not to violate the pokemons space too closely. Devereux seemed fairly unimpressed with the change of scenery, occasionally emitting a yawn in response to their exploration.

Zoë was quiet for a long while as they delved deeper into the cave. It was only when it opened into a slightly larger space, large enough that she could come to Elise's side, that she finally spoke.

"I'm not too worried about getting lost," she said. "But do you have a rope just in case?" She wasn't lying. She really wasn't afraid of not being able to get back out. Already she was mapping their path in her head and keeping track of the various twists and turns they made. Only a few yards back there had been a peculiar nick in the cave wall too that she had made sure to commit to memory. These were all fairly basic survival tips, but then again, so was bringing an escape rope to a cave.
