she whips her head to the direction she pointed at and sees small, floating creatures.

"oh, they're so cute. wh-"

an attack almost grazed her had it not been for her maractus' defense.

"oh, no. this is bad."

she gets up and gets off of her maractus, helping mila back to her feet while her maractus tries to defend against the next couple of barrages. a spiky shield gets set up, but even its defense doesn't stand against the unown.

it only stood long enough for them to stand.

"w-w-wait, i thought hoenn trainer's are strong," she asks. "if you're running, does that mean..."

marina was minding her own business, taking in the sights at her leisure. she had her maractus out for protection, like what she sees others do, when she finds herself out of air the next second when another person knocks the wind out of her lungs.

she falls to the ground, but not so much as to find herself injured since she did land on her maractus. an abrupt cotton guard from her pokemon's reflexes cushions their fall.

"w-what?" she asks, confused.

marina takes a moment to survey her immediate surroundings, noticing mila but not the horde chasing her. she takes the moment to be courteous amid the situation.

"are you alright?"

she was still on the ground.

she blinks at her and starts sniffing the air as well, following his lead. the scent of fire eventually reaches her nose.

"oh, fire!" she answers like she was being quizzed.

the single celebratory clap of her hands after getting the right answer slowly fades into her arms' descent to her sides when she realizes the implications of a fire in an area outside the city.

she looks at her vaporeon, and then sighs of relief. she has a fire extinguisher ready in any case.

"is that normal?" she asks.

AZ Excursion A: MMM, Mitsuru Marina Moment

a flash from a compact digital camera reflects against all crystals, blinding everyone in the cavern.

"oh, no. oh, no, i can't see. fudgesicles."

her soft voice echoes on the walls surrounding the underground lake, breaking the silence it would have otherwise had.

combined with their eyes adjusting to low visibility underground, the sudden exposure to bright lights were made extra effective. marina rubs her eyes as the camera hangs on a strap attached to her wrist.

"vaporeon, are you there?" she calls out, still rubbing her eyes.

as of right now, she wasn't anyone important, but it'll change. she agreed to be on hoenn so she can make a name for herself and be seen in a better light, and she's certain it will happen.

she hopes so.

"i'll trust in you two when we get into trouble, then!" she chirps. "i promise i won't be too much of a problem!"

"hehe, it's also part of my work anyways," she admits. "my company handles a few international trade insurances and i'm here to assess the happenings from the region."

with giant monsters and criminal organizations on the loose, it would be more surprising if her company's services weren't wanted by those outside of hoenn.

she releases her vaporeon from its ball after uriah asks about it. she scratches its ears as she drones about her pokemon.

"i'm not used to battling, but i practiced before i got here." she turns to uriah. "i think she's enough for the job."

"uriah's fine!" she argues for the sake of being polite. "but uri's a cute nickname too."

she'll stick to uriah. it sounded more like a name anyways, and it felt wrong using a nickname when they weren't even close yet.

they start to venture deeper into area zero. marina takes in the sights, eyes wandering about as they wallow in the awkwardness of silence. thankfully, uriah takes the first step to break it.

"oh, um, just sightseeing, hehe," she answers. "that's part of it, at least."

she came to hoenn for a job, after all.

"y-yeah! thank you."

that was what she was trying to imply with her question, but with him being preoccupied with something from the looks of it, she decided not to mind it.

"i'm marina, by the way," she introduces herself. "what should i call you?"

it would be weird if she ends the trip without even knowing the other person's name. it's not like it's natural for people to hang out and end the day without learning something new from each other, like their name.

"um, sir?"

a voice disturbs the man who busied himself in his phone.

marina and her vaporeon go up and approach uriah, not being entirely cautious on whether or not he was a rocket. it was the least of her worries, especially within area zero.

"do you know the way to the next station?" she asks.

she had been trying to get around on her own, but she wasn't used to terrain outside of civilization. nature was something new to her, especially to someone who grew up in a city where everything she needs was available.

it was small, more akin to a tent than an actual base, but it was considered one nevertheless.

following alex, she produces a small camera from her pockets. a click sounds, a foreign noise compared to the shouts and yells of a battle that takes place in the great chasm.

"um, i was also sent to document any places such as these, hehe," she sheepishly explains.

she got sent as part of a unovan company, and part of the job description was to assess first-hand any potential dangers that the region frequently experiences.

"i hope you don't mind."

marina mirrors his sigh, relieved that the panic in her was slowly subsiding. the moment everything slowed down was the moment she started getting control of herself once more.

she claps her hands in an attempt to remain optimistic, smiling as she watches each grunt scurry away.

"that's nice, isn't it?"

her eyes go over to the encampment. curiosity takes over, but she doesn't dare tread without alex taking the lead. confidence wasn't her biggest trait, but being careful was.

"should we check it?" she asks. "i got asked to tell everyone i meet to take precautions about abductions. maybe we can take things apart so we can stop future operations!"

a question she ponders about slips out.

"is it really that big of a problem around here?"

alex stands in front of her, basically serving as the frontline while she sits at the back. it feels wrong not to do anything, but she knows that doing something rash might make things worse.

slowly, she tries to get out and put herself there.

"a-acupressure!"

it was small steps that she's taking, but she's willing to take a part of the fight.

with its thorns, the maractus jabs the doublade. it may be steel, but a pressure point still manages to activate, forcing a boost in parameters for the pokemon.

"they're the only ones we need to deal with, right?" she asks.

marina takes out her pokemon before it was even needed, playing it safe as the situation calls for.

"right behind you!"

her maractus pops out of its ball, who marina keeps close to her person. she follows behind stone and his pokemon, eyes skirting from one source of sound to another in anxiety.

a pebble rolls by, disturbed by an incoming pokemon. in a panic, she orders her pokemon to get ready for a fight.

"c-c-cotton guard!"

a fluff of spores balloon out of the maractus, preemptively shielding its trainer before the pokemon even comes into view.

"um, i practiced a bit before i got here to hoenn."

the region was full of dangers after all. while the region appeals to those who like the mystery of the region or the excuse to fight in the name of justice, the hazards of everything were still present for anyone who steps foot on hoenn's lands.

that was what she was told before she got here though. whether it was a scare tactic or not, she was about to find out.

"i-i'll try my best though!"

she didn't take up the challenge just to fail on her expectations. she pumps herself up, though careful not to stray too far away from mister stone.
