A gentle voice and a soft touch; how long had it been since either had been a part of Jethro's life? He should have pulled away, should have insisted that he was fine, that he could take care of it, because that's the sort of thing he had gotten good at. [break][break]

But being cared for was a luxury Jethro Haig had not experienced in quite some time. Gruff anger melted like sugar in the face of such kindness, and he felt a soothing calm even before the HEAL PULSE settled over him. Jethro looked back up to the younger man kneeling at his side, and suddenly felt a little out of his depth, [break][break]

“I-” [break][break]

He stopped, swallowing hard against the lump forming in his throat, [break][break]

“Thank you. You didn't hafta do all that, I...” [break][break]

No, no, you're losing it, Jethro. Get it together, and stop making goo-goo eyes at the city slicker just because he patched you up. [break][break]

Jethro rose to his feet and inspected the now-healed thumb, [break][break]

“I'd say you've more than made up fer the fence.”

Montgomery's displeasure did not go unnoticed. After tolerating as much of the other man's belly-aching as he could, Jethro looked back up from his work hacking at a shrub, [break][break]

“Quit yer bitchin'!” he barked sharply, “If yer gonna gripe about it the whole fuckin' time, then maybe you best be on your way.” [break][break]

Jethro stopped and sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose as his eyes drifted to the headstones around them. He frowned as his agitation was replaced by a new wave of melancholy, [break][break]

“'Sides, it's disrespectful.” [break][break]

The silver band on his left hand felt a little heavier, somehow, if only for just a moment.

Jethro stifled the urge to audibly groan when he recognized the voice that called out to him. He turned, holding out the hedge-trimmer with wary caution, and eyed the familiar cop striding up to him, [break][break]

“Trimmin' this fuckin' shrub, the hell's it look like?” [break][break]

He could help but glower at the other man, until he deflated somewhat with a long sigh. It was too damn hot to be getting this worked up, and besides, hadn't Montgomery insisted that he was trying to turn over a new leaf when last they met? Maybe Jethro would test the limits of the man's newfound benevolence; he stopped to wipe the sweat from his brow before continuing, [break][break]

“Ran inta the groundskeeper when he had a nasty fall, so I offered ta finish some'a the work for 'im.” [break][break]

He jutted his head towards a rake leaning next to a nearby tree at a particularly lonely corner of the lot, [break][break]

“I don't suppose you could spare a moment ta help me wrap this shit up, 'less you got a Litten ta rescue out of a tree, or some shit.” [break][break]

Though there was a solid chance that the now-cop really did have more important work to tend to, Jethro was also desperate to quickly wrap up the laborous task he had signed himself up for. Good will or no, he was starting to sweat like a whore in church, and the sooner he got home to cool off, the better.

“Alright, I'll bite,” he chuckled, fully embracing this new line of inquiry, “'Sides, could probably learn a thing or two from an' old-timer like me.” [break][break]

Stowing the Poke Ball away, he stopped and turned to Josh proper, [break][break]

“Used ta work outta Floccesy, in Unova. Been workin' with livestock most'a my life, so anytime someone had a Tauros that done broke the fence or had a Thievul snoopin' round a coop, I'd be there.” [break][break]

Of course, it was rarely ever that simple, [break][break]

“'Course, you'd also have yer usual criminal shittery to deal with, too. Poachers, traffickers, those sorta punks.” [break][break]

“Did that ol' song an' dance fer the better part of twenty years. Seen all kinds'a shit in my day. Though, suppose you prob'bly have too, considerin' the sorta nonsense that happens 'round these parts.” [break][break]

Which reminded him that he had a lanky little Houndoom back at his own farm that needed to be put through his paces. Nash was sweet, if a little jumpy, but Jethro was sure that the Fire-type would shape up to be an excellent addition to his team with a little patience and training. Maybe he ought to bring him by Thomas' place if he found himself out in these parts again. [break][break]

But, that was neither here nor there, especially when the mention of Bertha came up, [break][break]

“She sure is.” [break][break]

And Jethro could respect the hell out of her; a staunch, no nonsense, salt-of-the-earth woman after his own heart, [break][break]

“Hell, she loaded up half'a these eggs herself.” [break][break]

He gestured back to the eggs loaded on his Tauros' harness, [break][break]

The lingering gaze and the slight flush to the younger man's face weren't entirely lost on Jethro. He quirked an eyebrow with some curiosity as the man he now knew as Barnaby handed him the next nail, [break][break]

“Pleased ta make yer acquaintance, Mister Finch.” [break][break]

And that lilt of Kalos on his tongue didn't escape Jethro's notice either, but that potential line of inquiry never stood a chance against the question now posed to him. Curiosity quickly soured to bitterness, and Jethro made sure he returned his attention back to the final nail he was hammering as he formulated his response, [break][break]

“Ain't got no family.” [break][break]

His brow furrowed as he struck the head of the final nail with more force than was necessary, [break][break]

“Just me an' the critters. I keep ta myself, most days-” [break][break]

Maybe he shouldn't have revealed his very intentional solitude to someone who could've very well been casing the place for nefarious ends, but hell if Jethro cared what happened to himself anymore. Besides, Jethro found he didn't have time to worry about the consequences of running his mouth when his hammer slipped off-course and slammed right into the side of his thumb, [break][break]

“Fuckin' shit-!” [break][break]

He quickly pulled the injured hand back with a wince and a sharp exhale. Good fucking Arceus, did that shit hurt.

Jethro thought that surely by this point in his life he was immune to the effects of flattery, but he found himself sorely mistaken as he tugged the brim of his hat low to hide his eyes, [break][break]

“Ain't nothin',” he insisted dismissively, “Used ta pull shit like that on the daily when I worked with my ol' pardner, back when I was a Ranger.” [break][break]

But hell, he hadn't mentioned the old Sawsbuck to anyone in a year or more, and Jethro wouldn't have the chance to continue reminiscing when the earth rumbled beneath them under the weight of a powerful STOMP. Jethro cursed for a moment until he looked up at the surly mare causing the commotion. She was a beauty, that was for sure, and Josh was already well on the way to handling her when a low cackling from behind caught Jethro's ear. [break][break]

A Krookodile grinned toothily as it lunged forward, jaws snapping to try and BITE at the Samurott Jethro rode upon. Lousy opportunistic bastards; were it not for the speed of the Water-type he rode upon, the ex-Ranger was certain that the Ground-type would've gotten a clean hit on them, but instead the crocodile just managed to sail forward, flinging spittle and clacking its teeth in their wake, and dove face-first into the caldera soil beneath them. [break][break]

The thing seemed to get... stuck? Maybe, just for a moment, as it tried to claw its way through dirt far thicker than the sands such Pokemon normally slid through with ease. Jethro couldn't help but loose a hoarse bark of laughter at the flailing legs and thick tail, and he tossed a Poke Ball at the Krookodile before it could properly submerge itself for a counter-attack.

Both men had their woes, it seemed, but there was nothing for it but to press forward. The world would still keep spinning regardless of whether or not they buckled under the weight of what it had to offer them, so what choice did they have but to persist in spite of it all? [break][break]

At least, that was Jethro's way of seeing things. He watched one of the Audino dart off and return with a bottle of water, which he gratefully accepted. Suddenly, he remembered why he'd stopped here in the first place, [break][break]

“Say, you ain't expectin' a shipment of eggs, are ya?” he asked as he dug out the note and presented it to the younger man, “'Cause I sure as shit can't make heads or tails outta this here scribblin'.” [break][break]

Though wouldn't it be a hell of a coincidence if he ended up in the right place after all, met by a reunion he hadn't expected? Jethro took a long drink from his bottle of water; Arceus certainly worked in mysterious ways.

Jethro grinned in spite of himself as he climbed onto the Samurott's back. A slightly unusual ride, maybe, but the old girl was stylish as all hell. Taking the reins with a practiced familiarity, he recalled his Snorlax and followed the gym leader with ease into the crater. [break][break]

While the younger man dealt with the Crocalor, Jethro was suddenly aware of a distant rumbling that ripped through the earth along the edge of the smoldering crater. He frowned as he steered his own steed to follow the noise of crumbling earth. There was something big coming their way, and whatever it was, it was pissed. [break][break]

Suddenly, a rocky maw burst out from the ground near Jethro and his ride, and the Onix that emerged SCREECHed angrily. The ex-Ranger glowered right back; he wasn't about to let some over-sized snake get the jump on them. [break][break]

The Samurott dodged the Onix with ease as it plowed towards them, sliding across the caldera with a dancer's grace as the Onix dove back into the molten earth. It rumbled under the ground until emerging again from somewhere on Jethro's right; again the Samurott deftly slid out of its way, far faster than the Rock-type could ever hope to be. [break][break]

Jethro grinned wolfishly as he held on during this impromptu rodeo, noting the increasing sluggishness with which the Onix moved as it sailed towards them a third time. Poor bastard was starting to wear himself out; with a flick of the wrist, Jethro tossed a Poke Ball at the rocky snake, hoping to snag it before it could finally get a hit in. [break][break]

In his periphery, he vaguely noticed the gym leader had won his own battle and the way Josh YAWNed alongside his Pokemon. Jethro tilted his head in their direction as he called out, [break][break]

“No sleepin' on the job, son. No tellin' what's gonna pop out at us next.”

There was still plenty of daylight and a lot of acreage to cover; if Willow and her farmhand still had work left to be done, Jethro had ample time to assist in whatever way he could.

Jethro nodded in acknowledgment, listening patiently to the younger man's grief. The loss of a well-loved figure would have been terrible enough even without the personal connection, but the untimely departure of a friend would certainly hurt all the more, [break][break]

“I'm sorry for yer loss,” he replied, though he frowned inwardly at his own words. [break][break]

In the throes of his own grief, all those pitiful condolences ever managed to do was piss him off. Most of the time, they were only ever spoken by folks who'd never known of that yawning heartache that came with the loss of a loved one, by people who could never fathom that particular sort of bottomless despair. [break][break]

Jethro grimaced, but was struck by some new stubborn bit of resolve. Talk was cheap; actions spoke a hell of a lot louder, [break][break]

“You want help lookin'?” [break][break]

He wasn't entirely unfamiliar with search and rescue operations, having assisted with a couple such ventures back during his Ranger-ing days. Jethro wasn't sure if there was much of anything left to find, but he'd be damned if he didn't do something to try and help.

A Luxury Ball, huh? A little rich for Jethro's blood, he thought with some consideration as the Ursaring was recalled, but just about everything about the other man was. Especially that smile, almost unnerving in how charming it was, [break][break]

“I'll startcha off easy,” Jethro replied, gently taking the nails from the now at ease Beulah and handing them to the other man, “Just hold onta these for me, and pass me one when I ask for it.” [break][break]

With that, Jethro moved back to kneel low by the fence, propping up a fallen panel on a bent knee and taking a nail from the stranger. As he hammered the board in place, he suddenly spoke up, [break][break]

“What's yer name, boy?” [break][break]

The question came out more suspicious than he had intended, his voice low and rough with wary caution. Maybe he ought to ease up a little; the other man had offered to help him, after all, [break][break]

“Mine's Jethro. Just moved ta these parts.”
