While Jethro was still determined to maintain his hermit-esque lifestyle, he had found himself inexorably drawn further into the community he was now a part of. [break][break]

He had been running to town on what should have been a quick errand when he stumbled across the isolated little cemetery some ways from the main road, sitting at the end of a winding gravel trail. It was weirdly familiar, being reminiscent of similarly small rural cemeteries outside of Floccesy, and more familiar still was the sight of the haggard old man pushing a worn mower across its lawn. Jethro wouldn’t have paid him or his work any mind if he hadn’t watched the poor old bastard trip and fall forward as he barely avoided running over a short gravestone, but in that moment, Jethro felt his blood run cold as he watched the elderly man topple over. Instead of moving on to Fallarbor proper, Jethro instead found himself riding up, quicker than he thought the half-wild Rapidash could gallop, to rush to the man’s aid. [break][break]

The groundskeeper was mostly fine, as it turned out, but was shaken in a way that was specific to the old and feeble. When the man insisted on continuing his work in spite of the apparent dangers involved, Jethro found himself offering to conclude the labor in his stead. [break][break]

So that's how Jethro wound up here, hedge-trimmer in hand as he worked to tame a particularly ornery juniper bush that had outgrown its little corner of the cemetery. Wildfire grazed on some tall grasses just outside of the cemetery's border, and the scent of diesel still clung to the unseasonably hot air in the wake of the groundskeeper's departure in a rusted old pickup truck. [break][break]

Distantly, the ex-Ranger thought he caught the sound of tires rolling across crunching gravel. Maybe the groundskeeper had come back for some equipment he'd left behind? Or maybe someone else had stumbled upon Jethro to help with his newfound bit of labor. Either way, Jethro didn't bother to turn around to see who was approaching; he had a shrubbery to trim, and the heat of the midday sun only grew with each minute that passed.

It was funny how these sort of things worked out. Jethro wouldn't have thought that he'd ever see Montgomery in the driver's seat of a patrol car, but, well, here they were, taking the short drive up to his house as the storm finally began to kick off. It was a short jog up into the house and to the bathroom to grab the comb still wrapped in its new cellophane packaging. Jethro was in and out quicker than anything when he returned to where he'd left Montgomery on the wide covered porch, that, for now, was doing a good enough job at shielding the both of them from the increasingly heavy rain, [break][break]

“All yours, princess.” [break][break]

In the past, the remark would've been made with a bit more bite, but already that derision was giving way to something a little more teasing. He'd probably gone soft in his old age, Jethro realized, as he waited for the officer to finish tidying himself up.

Discussions of the horrors of poaching could wait, because in that moment, the ex-Ranger was immediately preoccupied by his recognition of the loss that so plainly weighed down the other man. Jethro watched Josh watch the caldera, and his own bitterness evolved into something more sympathetic. He slipped his hat off, an old habit he'd never quite shaken, and moved to stand near the younger man's side, [break][break]

“You're hurtin'.” [break][break]

Jethro didn't look at Josh as he spoke, instead mirroring the Gym Leader and sweeping his gaze over the buried crater, [break][break]

“You wanna talk about it, son?” [break][break]

Jethro wouldn't blame the kid if he didn't. It was easier to keep that sort of thing buried deep, but grief would eat you alive if you let it. The fact that the ex-Ranger was even here right now was a testament to that.

Even without the presence of the Comfey to spare him any injuries, Jethro was determined to do whatever it took to ensure the egg's safety. It wobbled again, a few feet above, and he grimaced with worry as he dragged himself up a nearby limb. Stiff joints screamed with familiar agony upon his ascent; it was a miserable reminder that Jethro was quite literally getting too old for this shit. [break][break]

But it was worth it when he was finally able to reach just a little higher and carefully grab the egg, cradling it close against his chest, [break][break]

“I got 'em!” Jethro called back. [break][break]

Now came the tricky part. He grumbled to himself as he took one cautious step down to the branch below, unable to properly see where his foot was landing past the egg clutched tight in his arms. That was probably his undoing, in hindsight, because the branch suddenly gave out beneath his weight with a sharp crack. [break][break]

Jethro yelped like a wounded Poochyena as he was plunged into free-fall.

The Snorlax next to him YAWNed so deeply that it almost set Jethro into a yawn of his own. But no, he had a self-imposed job to do, and there was no time to doze. [break][break]

All told, though, the Safari Zone did look rather immaculate. From what he had gathered so far, there was plenty of room for what wildlife he'd seen in passing to run around comfortably. What wild Pokemon he did see looked healthy and happy, but not bearing the particularly lux coats found in domesticated creatures. They were well and truly free from what Jethro could surmise, but that didn't do much to quell his suspicions. Especially when a shadowy figure began to drift down slowly from somewhere behind him, like a leaf caught in the breeze, [break][break]

“What the-?” [break][break]

A Yamask of unfamiliar shape used a hand to cover it's own yawning mouth as it swayed lazily down, succumbing to the effects of Buffy's unintentional attack. Jethro grumbled and fished out a Safari Ball; okay, so maybe this was technically his fault, but this place still seemed too good to be true, he thought as he captured the Yamask to get it some medical attention.

The young Gym Leader's persistent enthusiasm would have been grating were it not so genuine. Jethro just huffed in reply to the invitation, though all told, it might prove to be a valuable resource if his new Rapidash was going to earn it's keep. He probably would've said something to that effect if it weren't for the the new sounds of distress coming from nearby. [break][break]

He followed behind as Josh rode up, only to grimace as he watched an apex predator decimate it's prey. Jethro knew it was too late to intervene even before Josh had secured the assailant; he had seen enough of the violence that Pokemon could inflict upon each other to know when a critter was too far gone, and quite frankly, the dying Rapidash was on it's way out. [break][break]

So he just pulled the brim of his hat down low as Josh moped, and scowled at the loss of life below them, [break][break]

“It's the way a'things,” he replied with a staunch bitterness, “Kill or be killed.” [break][break]

His bright eyes dimmed a little, crestfallen with a remembered bit of grief, [break][break]

“'Least Pokemon do it fer sensible reasons, like feedin' themselves. Humans are the only animals savage enough to do that sorta thing for sport.” [break][break]

Which is why he'd chosen to work for their benefit in that lifetime ago in Unova. Perhaps this was simply indicative of his misanthropic nature, but Pokemon could make for far better friends and coworkers than many people could.

The offer of assistance in repairing the fence lit another angry spark of agitation in Jethro, because he was fairly convinced that Prince Charming wouldn't be any better at helping him build the structure than Beulah had. But hell, it sounded like an earnest gesture, and Jethro was quite short-handed. So he just sighed, looking to the bear and back to the younger man, and let the tension that had begun to work its way to the hard set of his jaw dissipate, [break][break]

“Might just take ya up on that,” Jethro replied with a curt nod, “First things first; getcher bear back, 'cause her breaths just gonna get the bees all riled up.” [break][break]

Not that he was particularly experienced with bees or Pokemon that resembled them, but he had heard once that the CO2 on an exhaled breath triggered some sort of fight response, which was probably why a few members of the hive had already started to descend from the tree and swarm around the Ursaring's eagar nose. Titus bellowed once more, jeering from his spot in the peanut gallery, until Jethro shot him a scathing glare. It was enough to cow the Tauros' indignation for the moment as the bull slunk away like a scolded child.

A little sweat and grime never bothered Jethro any; he took the hand offered and replied with a firm shake of his own. But he had forgotten himself in the offering of pleasantries, it seemed. The worry etched onto the younger man's face was a reminder that he had a job to do, [break][break]

“Yessir,” he acknowledged with a nod, before turning and waving his Snorlax forward, “You mind if I take a crack at gettin' yer little'n back down?” [break][break]

He walked closer to the tree and approached the trunk with Buffy waddling up behind him. Jethro looked up again, closer and with greater scrutiny as he assessed the situation. It was hard telling if this egg was displaced by a brood parasite (Spearow in particular were prone to such tactics) or if some predatory creature had dropped a prized morsel after raiding the nearest coop. Either way, getting the egg down wouldn't be all that hard with Buffy's help; like other babies, a Pokemon's egg was more resilient than it might first appear, [break][break]

“Oh shit-” [break][break]

Perhaps it would've been more polite to wait for Greyson's reply to his offer of assistance, but Jethro suddenly noticed the egg shift in the branches that tenuously held it aloft. Eggs could be tough, but not that tough; a fall from this height was sure to break it. With a quick nod to Buffy, the Snorlax held his tremendous paws low and the ex-Ranger scrambled up, boosted by the Normal-type's incredible strength. It looked like the egg was coming down one way or another.

“Heard somethin' about 'em, 'fore I first moved to these parts. Bet they probably keep you folks at the League awful busy.” [break][break]

He arched an eyebrow in surprise as he got to witness one of the strange products of the phenomena firsthand. He shuddered to think of what a Thievul of that size could do to a coop of Farfetch'd or Ducklett, [break][break]

“Well ain't that somethin',” he murmured with some awe as he regarded the oversized fox. He took a couple of steps closer, frowning a little to himself as the gears started turning. There were all kinds of things that could go sideways when it came to your average Pokemon's health; who knew what kind of issues a creature of this size might run into? [break][break]

“You gotten him checked out? Made sure he's healthy, an' all that?”

The Safari Zone was typically the last place Jethro wanted to be; in his career as a Ranger, he'd handled many cases that involved dealing with poachers and breeders producing Pokemon to dump onto places like these. Some establishments were better run than others, sure, but most of the time the Pokemon were poorly treated and scared out of their wits. [break][break]

This place, at least, seemed a bit more on the up-and-up, and maybe that was why Jethro had decided to check it out. Maybe the Pokemon here actually were responsibly cared for and ethically acquired. Or maybe this place wasn't as sterling as it's reputation suggested. [break][break]

His brow furrowed as he departed the gates and entered the Safari Zone proper. If he caught even a whiff of corruption from this establishment, Jethro was determined to tear it down so fast that it would make the director's head spin.

Jethro frowned at Montgomery's initial dismissal of his injuries, watching a bead of blood trickle down from the cut on his face. But hell, he'd been there too, trying to walk off all manner of bruises and injuries back in his prime. Sometimes pride was just about the most important thing a man could have. [break][break]

His own stubborn pride would have to take the backseat on this one though, Jethro decided, when the awkward silence gave way to Montgomery's next few words. His brow furrowed as he looked the ex-Rocket up and down, as if he could read the other man's intentions through the debris that clung to his hair or in the folds of his crumpled hat. He sighed through his nose, his expression softening somewhat as he finally voiced his reply, [break][break]

“Fine,” Jethro conceded with finality, “At least you put yer money where yer mouth is. And besides-” [break][break]

He turned away, looking back to his little home towards the west. A loud peal of thunder rang out through the air, and the long-forgotten rain clouds that hung low above them threatened to break any minute, [break][break]

“I wouldn't mind leavin' some things back home.” [break][break]

Jethro stepped past Montgomery and inclined his head towards the house, [break][break]

“Got a comb back at the house you can use, s'long as you don't leave any chunks a'yer hair in it. Better get a move on 'fore the rain starts.”
