Perhaps one of the best parts of rural life was the strength that could be found within a tight-knit community. While Jethro was still something of an outsider, being new to the area and prone to his bouts of introversion, he knew the importance of making himself useful to the folks he shared this little town with. So when the need was expressed for some help on a farm a couple miles over, Jethro had volunteered himself for the job. It'd be good to get off of his own parcel of land for a bit, and besides, it sounded like a matter he was particularly qualified to assist with. [break][break]

He ambled up with his farmhands in tow, approaching who he presumed was the homeowner, and watched with some amusement as the younger man stared up into a large tree, [break][break]

“Ya lose somethin' up there?” he called, more to announce his presence than anything else.

Jethro barked a sharp, incredulous laugh. He hardly noticed the Snorlax YAWNing at his side as the ex-Ranger stowed away his new Houndoom and turned to watch the nearby Rapidash, [break][break]

“Yer shittin' me,” he insisted, eyeing the cream-colored coat of the horse nibbling at a sparse bit of foliage. The thing was probably at least fifteen hands tall, he reckoned; there was no chance in hell a Houndoom would get within spitting distance of that kind of height. [break][break]

But concerns over height quickly disappeared when he watched the Rapidash begin to sway uneasily on it's feet. It was with some frustration that Jethro realized that Buffy's unintentional attack must have made the thing drowsy. The ex-Ranger tossed a Pokeball at the Rapidash with an agitated grumble under his breath. It was another mouth to feed, but at least now the Pokemon wouldn't fall over and break it's leg up here on the isolated mountain.

Despite the lingering agitation brought on by exhaustion, Jethro had to bite back a smile at the sight of the first tottering Audino that greeted him. They were such sweet creatures, with those wide blue eyes and gentle dispositions. He waved to it casually and pushed himself off of the fence, turning and suddenly noticing a man striding up to meet him. [break][break]

It took Jethro longer than he would have liked to recall where he'd first seen the presumed homeowner that greeted him with such familiarity. The dark hair didn't ring any bells, but the vague lilt of Kalos in the man's voice did. Just where in the hell did Jethro know him from? [break][break]

When the realization finally struck him, it did so with all the force of a freight train. Thomas, the Kalosian? A ranch-hand that he had worked with back in Unova, whose presence had drawn in the gawking eyes and affections of locals who were enamored by his accent and work ethic. Jethro laughed with some disbelief as he took the man's hand to return the shake with a firm grip, [break][break]

“Well ain't you a sight for sore eyes!” Jethro exclaimed with a delight he hadn't felt in ages, “Could ask ya the same, Thomas.” [break][break]

His mood soured somewhat when he recalled just why he'd moved in the first place, and Jethro's eyes drifted to the scars across Thomas' face. It looked like the younger man had seen his own share of suffering since they'd last met, too, [break][break]

“Been better, all told, but I'm gettin' along. How 'bout you?”

Ah, the childish posturing of a Dragon not yet grown. His impetuousness was actually kinda cute, even if it meant that Jethro had come perilously close to getting sand in his eyes. The ex-Ranger dusted the grainy debris off of his clothes as the girl landed nearby. [break][break]

His eyes narrowed somewhat at her introductions and assumptions. Jethro nodded in reply, but was quick to correct her, [break][break]

“Name's Jethro. Been retired for a spell, but some things never leave ya.” [break][break]

Which was one reason why he wasn't immediately opposed to the idea of pitching in proper with the nest cleanup. There was still some sort of distant calling to the work, aching like the pains of a phantom limb, that couldn't be sated by any means outside of getting involved and helping. Jethro also couldn't ever deny a direct request for aid, a fact of life that he had long since resigned himself to, [break][break]

“Sure,” he replied, moving to release a Poke Ball from his waist. [break][break]

Jethro clicked open the capsule to reveal a Snorlax, who, with some instruction, began to carefully gather the branches that had been delicately arranged in the planter, [break][break]

“Gotta move quick, though. The homeowners' ain't gonna be none too happy once they circle back 'round.” [break][break]

Distantly, Jethro thought he caught the sound of flapping wings. He hoped it was just his imagination, because the last thing he wanted to do was get caught by a flock of pissed-off pigeons.

“Sometimes I catch some'a those bike races outta Kalos,” Jethro replied casually, “It's kinda like stock car racin', but with people.” [break][break]

And the wipe outs were similarly grisly; it was just as harrowing to watch the peloton collapse because one person broke pace as it was to watch the domino effect a fender-bender could cause in the middle of lap 152. If only some of his redneck siblings understood the appeal of the sport in the same way he did. [break][break]

Jethro's thoughts turned to the Houndoom sniffing at the ground nearby. He frowned as he watched skin ripple over bony ribs as it padded close to the crater's edge - poor thing was damn near emaciated. The ex-Ranger couldn't quite tell if it was formerly domesticated and subsequently abandoned, or if it was a wild creature that had done a poor job fending for itself. Either way, his heart ached at the sight of it, so he approached cautiously and fished out a bit of jerky from his pocket, [break][break]

“Hmm, ya ain't wrong about that,” he called back as he offered the food to the dog Pokemon. Dark eyes widened with almost feverish delight as the Houndoom greedily snapped up the piece of dried meat, “'Bout bein' loyal.” [break][break]

Jethro produced a Pokeball and extended it to the Fire-type, an unspoken suggestion of 'there's more where that came from' and an offer for better pickings back at his farm. His brow furrowed with confusion as he considered the second half of the gym leader's statement, [break][break]

“How big we talkin'?”

Jethro simply nodded in reply, eyes trained on the Skarmory blitzing past on a collision course with the wild Tangrowth. The BRAVE BIRD sent the Tangrowth reeling, and a vicious HAMMER ARM from the Snorlax all but guaranteed that the wild Pokemon would be driven back. [break][break]

It was kind of a shame, though, Jethro thought as he watched the thick arm of Buffy collide with the top of the Tangrowth's head, almost bouncing against the springy vines but still driving home with enough force to hurt. The creature was probably just defending it's home, a place in which it was once revered by whatever people once lived here. To be unseated from a position of godhood and reduced to the lowly standing of a mere pest was one hell of a blow to one's ego. Jethro thought that he too would fight like hell if he was in the Grass-type's position. [break][break]

But a threat to one's body was almost always more pressing than a threat to one's pride; at least, that's what Jethro had learned to be the case for many Pokemon. With a skittering, shuffling sound, the Tangrowth retracted it's wayward vines and dashed off into the field beyond, bee-lining towards a copse of trees where it might find shelter. While the species was exceptionally resilient, Jethro doubted that it would be back any time soon. [break][break]

So he turned back to the officer, eyes narrowed as he gave the man a once-over for any obvious injuries, [break][break]

“You hurt? Got a first aid kit back at the house, if ya need it.”

The kid was a real chatterbox, but at least he was kind to his Pokemon, [break][break]

“Mauville's gym leader, huh?” Jethro replied with consideration, “Ain't spent a whole lotta time in those parts. Just passed through once or twice.” [break][break]

Because truth be told, something about the noisy din and bustle of any city was irritating at best and anxiety-inducing at worst for the farmer. Too many people on the streets and too much smog in the air; it felt like there was hardly any room to breathe, much less go about one's daily life like it was nothing in those crowded spaces. It was enough to set Jethro's teeth on edge just thinking about it. [break][break]

Or maybe that was just the presence of the ghostly Pokemon lurking just behind his right shoulder. Jethro caught the flickering flame out of the corner of his eye and turned his head to face it, [break][break]

“You lost, little lady?” [break][break]

It was odd to see the Lampent so far away from civilization; these creatures allegedly consumed the spirits of the departed, though in his time, Jethro had also found that they could get by with just a little bit of lighter fluid, too. But there was neither wayward soul nor sup of combustible liquid to be found in this place, which is perhaps why the Pokemon watched Jethro with those unreadable blue eyes, [break][break]

“C'mon sis; I'll getchu back to town.” [break][break]

He held out a Poke Ball for the lost Lampent; if nothing else, this would be a simple catch-and-release, and the little Ghost wouldn't be left to wither away in the wilderness.

Jethro frowned as he watched the sun begin to slink low over the horizon. A cool spring night wasn't anything to be afraid of in most cases, but the half-built fence and dilapidated barn offered little shelter for his livestock. [break][break]

Even that wouldn't have been too much of a concern for the farmer were it not for the large footprints he'd noticed in the wet mud of the acreage earlier in the morning. His Pokemon were capable, sure, and weren't liable to wander off, but whatever had been slinking around had been big. Too big for Jethro to rightfully ignore. He was sure that he could have the fence finished in the morning, but for tonight, he had a homestead to defend. [break][break]

So he stood on his porch with a steaming cup of coffee in hand, bright eyes trained on the long drive leading up to his house. He hoped that the help he requested for this venture would show up sooner rather than later.

Jethro suddenly looked up from the planter-turned-bird nest only to see a pair of bright yellow eyes staring back. From the rooftop above, a Gabite peered directly down at him with patient curiosity, [break][break]

“What're you lookin' at, boy?” [break][break]

Maybe the Dragon-type was waiting for the nest owners to return so he could secure himself a tasty meal? Maybe he was deciding whether or not Jethro would make a tasty meal. Dragons were simultaneously smarter and dumber than most people gave them credit for. [break][break]

It was then that Jethro noticed the young redhead collecting nests nearby, carefully working her way across the rooftop above to relocate what was, quite frankly, an alarming number of them. He raised his voice to carry his words from where he stood on the ground below, [break][break]

“Little lady, I think yer Gabite is givin' me the stink eye.”

It happened faster than Jethro could react. One moment the officer was there, and the next, he had disappeared into the brush, slipping into the darkness of the tall grasses beyond, [break][break]

“Hold on!” [break][break]

With a flick of the wrist and the click of a capsule, ol' Buffy was at Jethro's side, dutifully following after his trainer as the farmer charged into the underbrush. The moment he caught sight of a flailing arm, Jethro grabbed it, and peered beyond to see whatever was assailing the cop. [break][break]

Wide eyes poking out from dark blue vines stared back at him. The Tangrowth loomed large over the men, vines thrashing with protective agitation, looking something like the storybook pictures of wildmen the farmer had seen in his youth. Jethro should've known that this place wasn't as abandoned as it had looked, [break][break]

The Snorlax charged forward, arms raised, throwing himself into a full-force BODY SLAM against the Grass-type. If Buffy could knock out the Pokemon or get it in a grapple, maybe they could release it's hold on Officer James.

Oh great, so the young punk speeding through the skies was a champion ranked trainer. Jethro huffed a hoarse chuckle of disbelief; this kid sounded like he had his head so far up his own ass that he wouldn't be able to find it with both hands and a flashlight. He had half a mind to tell this Josh as much himself until he hear the cry of a Pokemon from nearby. [break][break]

Before Jethro had the chance to spring into action, Josh had beaten him to the punch. He watched with curiosity and concern as the gym leader rushed over to tend to the wounds of a young Litleo, and winced a little as he watched the blood spray from the wound in the cub's leg. A Super Potion was all well and good, but the kid probably needed to apply some pressure to the wound to stop the bleeding proper. At the very least, the click of the capsule was the next best thing as the Litleo was stowed away. Hopefully that'd be enough to keep the critter safe until it could get some proper medical attention. [break][break]

Jethro felt his agitation start to subside as he eyed the young gym leader. At least the kid's heart was in the right place, [break][break]

“Not bad,” he offered as he approached, “You said yer name's Josh?” [break][break]

He offered the other man a handshake, [break][break]

“Name's Jethro. I'm out of Fallarbor.”
