Before the Dragonair could collide with the ground, it suddenly lurched away, swooping upwards, but the force of the wind carried by it's passing was enough to send Jethro's hat flying. It was then that the older man noticed a rider on the dragon's back, and he scowled at the recklessness of whoever this wannabe ace pilot was. [break][break]

Any remaining bit of tension left his body as he watched the dragon and rider return again, sweeping past as they made way for their descent. Jethro grumbled curses to himself as he turned to go grab his hat from where it had landed close to the nearby treeline. A pair of dark eyes peered out from a bush near where it lay; Jethro just scowled and used the accessory to wave away the curious Krokorok that lurked there, [break][break]

“You always ride like a jackass, or is this a special occasion?” Jethro leered back at the younger man that greeted him, “Could hurt someone, pullin' shit like that. Ol' Buffy an' I coulda got turned inta paste.” [break][break]

He thumbed back at the Snorlax lingering close by, but if the Pokemon had thought himself to be in any sort of peril, any such fears had long since vanished as he cheerfully waved at the other trainer and his Dragonair.

“What in the Sam Hill ...?” [break][break]

The Zigzagoon that had been trying to creep up on Jethro bolted back into the woods, having noticed the streak of purple rocketing across the sky around the same time that the ex-Ranger had. He watched with some curiosity as the luminous comet began to descend, but Jethro's eyes widened in horror when he realized it was descending in his general direction. [break][break]

With a flick of the wrist, Jethro's farmhand was at his side, and the two waited like men staring down a firing squad as the comet came crashing down, [break][break]

“Buffy, get ready,” the Snorlax's trainer cautioned, brow furrowing as he pulled the brim of his hat down to shield his eyes from the sun. [break][break]

There was a... scream? But maybe that was just the rushing winds of what now appeared to be a serpentine body that drew closer to the ground at impossible speeds. Jethro watched, and waited, and while he was sure he wasn't in the direct line of fire of the falling Pokemon's collision course, he wasn't sure what else to expect when it landed.

Perhaps that was all Jethro needed to see; there was conviction and resolve behind those dark eyes that he'd never seen before. Something real, something fierce; maybe the little shit wasn't just blowing smoke up his ass after all. But that didn't mean he was going to let Monty off the hook that easily, he decided as as the cop turned his back to Jethro to walk towards the shrine. Someone still had to keep the bastard in line, and maybe that someone would have to be him. [break][break]

He followed at some distance as Montgomery neared the shrine and looked it over. It had definitely seen better days for certain; even if the former landowner didn't leave this bit of acreage to rot, Jethro was certain that the shrine had been abandoned long before then, [break][break]

“Nope, just this ol' thang and a buncha briars grownin' up all over the place,” he replied coolly, “Don't think there's more'a them out here, and I ain't seen any critters shackin' up nearby. Ain't nothin's paid any mind to this little shrine in years.” [break][break]

Maybe it was some sort of family or household place of worship, he wondered idly. Or maybe whatever thing the former residents worshiped had abandoned this place long ago. That fit his recollections of the fickle and violent gods he was so familiar with back home.

He had almost reached the outskirts of Oldale when Jethro saw something large rooting through a shiny cylindrical trashcan, not far from the end of a winding driveway that snaked it's way into the woods. He frowned; dumb bastards needed to get a lid lock to prevent this sort of thing from happening, [break][break]

“Getchyer head outta there, dumbass,” he chided the ursine shape rooting around for treasures and tasty morsels. [break][break]

The Bewear jolted with surprise and slipped out of the trash can, losing it's balance as it staggered back and fell flat on it's ass. Jethro couldn't help but laugh at that, even as the Bewear stared up at him with frightened eyes, [break][break]

“Y'alright honey?” Jethro asked soothingly as he cautiously approached the Pokemon. The Bewear didn't move, a red flag in and of itself. [break][break]

Normally, Jethro would have expected a wild critter to turn tail and bolt off into the woods, or to lash out and try to fight him. But this Bewear, from it's wide and watery eyes to the particularly plush quality of it's fur, had definitely been around people. He frowned a little at the realization that this probably wasn't a wild Pokemon after all, [break][break]

“Where're yer people? Yer trainer nearby?” [break][break]

Jethro could have sworn that he saw tears start to pool at the corners of the bear's eyes. Abandoned, then. Would explain why the poor thing was rooting through trash instead of foraging as it naturally would. [break][break]

With a sigh, Jethro fished out an empty Poke Ball and carefully extended it towards the bear in offering, [break][break]

“C'mon girl, let's getchu home.”

Jethro wiped the sweat from his brow with the back of his hand as he stared at the precarious bundle of twigs poking out from the large planter in front of the Lavaridge Pokemon Center. Judging from it's shoddy construction and the dull gray feathers left behind, it was probably a Pidove's nest, or a nest belonging to it's larger kin. [break][break]

Those birds were dumber than rocks, Jethro had found over the course of his former career as a Ranger. They'd build their nests in the most obnoxious places; on top of street lights, in an open trash can, and once, stretched across a couple of low-hanging branches precariously danging above a rushing river. [break][break]

As he stared at the nest, two thoughts occurred to him, the first of which being that he really hoped that the postal workers were sending someone out to relocate it. Dumb though they may be, Pidove were still one of Arceus' creations, and it wasn't their fault that their god had given them shit for brains. The second thought was a more puzzling one; some of the feathers looked freshly molted, so surely this nest hadn't been abandoned. Where were the birds? [break][break]

Suddenly, the hairs on the back of Jethro's neck stood on end. For a moment, he was struck by the feeling that he was being watched.

There was the scent of petrichor and something floral on the air as Jethro hammered in one of the last planks for the section of fencing he was trying to rebuild. The mud-slick ground made the work a pain in the ass, but not entirely undoable as the Miltank nearby passed him another nail, [break][break]

“Thanks, sweetheart,” he murmured fondly as he quickly slotted the nail to hold between his teeth while he tried to prop up the next plank of wood. [break][break]

He really ought to get more Pokemon with opposable thumbs and the sense to use them. Beulah was a little sharper than the average head of cattle, but Lord knew that Titus couldn't do a damn thing to help with work like this. The only thing the old bull was good for was occasionally hauling a plow and sleeping in the shade, which, as it turned out, was exactly what he was doing at the moment. Jethro side-eyed him with a withering glare, but the Tauros just snorted defiantly in reply, chewing his cud without a care in the world. [break][break]

It was then that a bit of movement from somewhere beyond the bull caught Jethro's eye. He muttered a few curses, passing the nail back to Beulah as he secured his hammer to a loop on his belt, rising to stand fully as his most recent piece of heat-treated lumber fell into the muck. Cold eyes narrowed as he squinted, trying to discern just what the hell was approaching his property line. Was it a person? A Pokemon? [break][break]

As it turned out, it was both. God damn trespassers; probably one of the local kids coming to gawk at their surly new neighbor. Jethro nodded to the cow as he took large strides to approach the figure, [break][break]

“Hey!” he barked, sharp and clear through the wet spring air, “This is private property, friend.”

A cheerful cry rang out to Jethro's left. He stopped, eyes sliding to his periphery to see a Bayleef with a tottering Chikorita at it's feet grazing on some low-hanging branches. He smiled a little in spite of himself when he caught the scent of peppercorns and citrus on the wind; the aroma was a trademark of the species, he knew, but over the years Jethro had been somewhat delighted to discover that it varied a little from one individual to the next. For some, it was more earthy, and in others, it was more bright and almost acidic, but it always carried that same spiced quality that invigorated the spirit. [break][break]

It's affect was not lost on Jethro as he hastened his pace up the path. He felt more sprightly, somehow, and the newfound energy drove away his dour melancholy like the sun's light after a thunderstorm. It didn't dispel it completely, though, but few things ever did these days.
