Both men had their woes, it seemed, but there was nothing for it but to press forward. The world would still keep spinning regardless of whether or not they buckled under the weight of what it had to offer them, so what choice did they have but to persist in spite of it all? [break][break]

At least, that was Jethro's way of seeing things. He watched one of the Audino dart off and return with a bottle of water, which he gratefully accepted. Suddenly, he remembered why he'd stopped here in the first place, [break][break]

“Say, you ain't expectin' a shipment of eggs, are ya?” he asked as he dug out the note and presented it to the younger man, “'Cause I sure as shit can't make heads or tails outta this here scribblin'.” [break][break]

Though wouldn't it be a hell of a coincidence if he ended up in the right place after all, met by a reunion he hadn't expected? Jethro took a long drink from his bottle of water; Arceus certainly worked in mysterious ways.

Jethro grinned in spite of himself as he climbed onto the Samurott's back. A slightly unusual ride, maybe, but the old girl was stylish as all hell. Taking the reins with a practiced familiarity, he recalled his Snorlax and followed the gym leader with ease into the crater. [break][break]

While the younger man dealt with the Crocalor, Jethro was suddenly aware of a distant rumbling that ripped through the earth along the edge of the smoldering crater. He frowned as he steered his own steed to follow the noise of crumbling earth. There was something big coming their way, and whatever it was, it was pissed. [break][break]

Suddenly, a rocky maw burst out from the ground near Jethro and his ride, and the Onix that emerged SCREECHed angrily. The ex-Ranger glowered right back; he wasn't about to let some over-sized snake get the jump on them. [break][break]

The Samurott dodged the Onix with ease as it plowed towards them, sliding across the caldera with a dancer's grace as the Onix dove back into the molten earth. It rumbled under the ground until emerging again from somewhere on Jethro's right; again the Samurott deftly slid out of its way, far faster than the Rock-type could ever hope to be. [break][break]

Jethro grinned wolfishly as he held on during this impromptu rodeo, noting the increasing sluggishness with which the Onix moved as it sailed towards them a third time. Poor bastard was starting to wear himself out; with a flick of the wrist, Jethro tossed a Poke Ball at the rocky snake, hoping to snag it before it could finally get a hit in. [break][break]

In his periphery, he vaguely noticed the gym leader had won his own battle and the way Josh YAWNed alongside his Pokemon. Jethro tilted his head in their direction as he called out, [break][break]

“No sleepin' on the job, son. No tellin' what's gonna pop out at us next.”

Maybe Jethro could've stood to be a little more equipped to handle this venture, but hey, he had handled worse situations with less prep time back in Unova. Surely this wouldn't be all that difficult, [break][break]

“Yessir,” he replied, realizing that Buffy was ill-equipped to handle the heat of the caldera himself, “If'n ya don't mind.” [break][break]

He also couldn't help but find himself curious about what other sorts of overly large and strange companions the gym leader had at his beck and call. The Vaporeon didn't surprise Jethro, exactly, and he tipped his hat by way of introduction at the aquatic Eevee-lution.

In spite of himself, Jethro found himself laughing hoarsely at the other man's concern, [break][break]

“Yessir,” he replied easily as he handed over the egg, “Believe you me, I been hurt worse doin' dumber shit.” [break][break]

Something that came with the territory of both rural life and his former career as a Ranger. A short fall onto such a comfortable bed of flowers was nothing compared to tasks like wrangling an ornery Tauros or rescuing an injured Ursaring. [break][break]

Jethro smiled a little in spite of himself and tipped his hat, [break][break]

“Looks like that's the first'a yer chores done; what else can I do ya for?” [break][break]

There was still plenty of daylight and a lot of acreage to cover; if Willow and her farmhand still had work left to be done, Jethro had ample time to assist in whatever way he could.

Jethro nodded in acknowledgment, listening patiently to the younger man's grief. The loss of a well-loved figure would have been terrible enough even without the personal connection, but the untimely departure of a friend would certainly hurt all the more, [break][break]

“I'm sorry for yer loss,” he replied, though he frowned inwardly at his own words. [break][break]

In the throes of his own grief, all those pitiful condolences ever managed to do was piss him off. Most of the time, they were only ever spoken by folks who'd never known of that yawning heartache that came with the loss of a loved one, by people who could never fathom that particular sort of bottomless despair. [break][break]

Jethro grimaced, but was struck by some new stubborn bit of resolve. Talk was cheap; actions spoke a hell of a lot louder, [break][break]

“You want help lookin'?” [break][break]

He wasn't entirely unfamiliar with search and rescue operations, having assisted with a couple such ventures back during his Ranger-ing days. Jethro wasn't sure if there was much of anything left to find, but he'd be damned if he didn't do something to try and help.

A Luxury Ball, huh? A little rich for Jethro's blood, he thought with some consideration as the Ursaring was recalled, but just about everything about the other man was. Especially that smile, almost unnerving in how charming it was, [break][break]

“I'll startcha off easy,” Jethro replied, gently taking the nails from the now at ease Beulah and handing them to the other man, “Just hold onta these for me, and pass me one when I ask for it.” [break][break]

With that, Jethro moved back to kneel low by the fence, propping up a fallen panel on a bent knee and taking a nail from the stranger. As he hammered the board in place, he suddenly spoke up, [break][break]

“What's yer name, boy?” [break][break]

The question came out more suspicious than he had intended, his voice low and rough with wary caution. Maybe he ought to ease up a little; the other man had offered to help him, after all, [break][break]

“Mine's Jethro. Just moved ta these parts.”

Maybe he'd died, Jethro thought, when he suddenly felt himself float light on the breeze for just a moment. Maybe he'd snapped his neck on the way down and landed himself in Elysium, his fall cushioned by a bed of asphodel. There were a lot worse ways for him to go, in the grand scheme of things. [break][break]

But as it turned out, Jethro had not actually perished on his trip down from the tree, and his fall had instead been broken by the Comfey's FLOWER SHIELD. He blinked abruptly and suddenly felt rather stupid, [break][break]

“M'fine!” he barked back, sharper than he intended. [break][break]

Jethro looked down to find the egg was still perfectly intact in his arms. He held it aloft just a little, enough to make sure the younger man could see that the little one was just fine, [break][break]

“So's yer egg.” [break][break]

With a little awkward shimmying, Jethro maneuvered himself off of the artificially created bed of flowers and presented his prize to his companion. Sugar cautiously ambled forward from her spot on the sidelines to gently pick off a couple of petals that still clung to the back of her trainer's shirt.

i don't believe in an interventionist god, but i know, darling, that you do.

While Jethro was still determined to maintain his hermit-esque lifestyle, he had found himself inexorably drawn further into the community he was now a part of. [break][break]

He had been running to town on what should have been a quick errand when he stumbled across the isolated little cemetery some ways from the main road, sitting at the end of a winding gravel trail. It was weirdly familiar, being reminiscent of similarly small rural cemeteries outside of Floccesy, and more familiar still was the sight of the haggard old man pushing a worn mower across its lawn. Jethro wouldn’t have paid him or his work any mind if he hadn’t watched the poor old bastard trip and fall forward as he barely avoided running over a short gravestone, but in that moment, Jethro felt his blood run cold as he watched the elderly man topple over. Instead of moving on to Fallarbor proper, Jethro instead found himself riding up, quicker than he thought the half-wild Rapidash could gallop, to rush to the man’s aid. [break][break]

The groundskeeper was mostly fine, as it turned out, but was shaken in a way that was specific to the old and feeble. When the man insisted on continuing his work in spite of the apparent dangers involved, Jethro found himself offering to conclude the labor in his stead. [break][break]

So that's how Jethro wound up here, hedge-trimmer in hand as he worked to tame a particularly ornery juniper bush that had outgrown its little corner of the cemetery. Wildfire grazed on some tall grasses just outside of the cemetery's border, and the scent of diesel still clung to the unseasonably hot air in the wake of the groundskeeper's departure in a rusted old pickup truck. [break][break]

Distantly, the ex-Ranger thought he caught the sound of tires rolling across crunching gravel. Maybe the groundskeeper had come back for some equipment he'd left behind? Or maybe someone else had stumbled upon Jethro to help with his newfound bit of labor. Either way, Jethro didn't bother to turn around to see who was approaching; he had a shrubbery to trim, and the heat of the midday sun only grew with each minute that passed.

It was funny how these sort of things worked out. Jethro wouldn't have thought that he'd ever see Montgomery in the driver's seat of a patrol car, but, well, here they were, taking the short drive up to his house as the storm finally began to kick off. It was a short jog up into the house and to the bathroom to grab the comb still wrapped in its new cellophane packaging. Jethro was in and out quicker than anything when he returned to where he'd left Montgomery on the wide covered porch, that, for now, was doing a good enough job at shielding the both of them from the increasingly heavy rain, [break][break]

“All yours, princess.” [break][break]

In the past, the remark would've been made with a bit more bite, but already that derision was giving way to something a little more teasing. He'd probably gone soft in his old age, Jethro realized, as he waited for the officer to finish tidying himself up.

Discussions of the horrors of poaching could wait, because in that moment, the ex-Ranger was immediately preoccupied by his recognition of the loss that so plainly weighed down the other man. Jethro watched Josh watch the caldera, and his own bitterness evolved into something more sympathetic. He slipped his hat off, an old habit he'd never quite shaken, and moved to stand near the younger man's side, [break][break]

“You're hurtin'.” [break][break]

Jethro didn't look at Josh as he spoke, instead mirroring the Gym Leader and sweeping his gaze over the buried crater, [break][break]

“You wanna talk about it, son?” [break][break]

Jethro wouldn't blame the kid if he didn't. It was easier to keep that sort of thing buried deep, but grief would eat you alive if you let it. The fact that the ex-Ranger was even here right now was a testament to that.

Even without the presence of the Comfey to spare him any injuries, Jethro was determined to do whatever it took to ensure the egg's safety. It wobbled again, a few feet above, and he grimaced with worry as he dragged himself up a nearby limb. Stiff joints screamed with familiar agony upon his ascent; it was a miserable reminder that Jethro was quite literally getting too old for this shit. [break][break]

But it was worth it when he was finally able to reach just a little higher and carefully grab the egg, cradling it close against his chest, [break][break]

“I got 'em!” Jethro called back. [break][break]

Now came the tricky part. He grumbled to himself as he took one cautious step down to the branch below, unable to properly see where his foot was landing past the egg clutched tight in his arms. That was probably his undoing, in hindsight, because the branch suddenly gave out beneath his weight with a sharp crack. [break][break]

Jethro yelped like a wounded Poochyena as he was plunged into free-fall.

The Snorlax next to him YAWNed so deeply that it almost set Jethro into a yawn of his own. But no, he had a self-imposed job to do, and there was no time to doze. [break][break]

All told, though, the Safari Zone did look rather immaculate. From what he had gathered so far, there was plenty of room for what wildlife he'd seen in passing to run around comfortably. What wild Pokemon he did see looked healthy and happy, but not bearing the particularly lux coats found in domesticated creatures. They were well and truly free from what Jethro could surmise, but that didn't do much to quell his suspicions. Especially when a shadowy figure began to drift down slowly from somewhere behind him, like a leaf caught in the breeze, [break][break]

“What the-?” [break][break]

A Yamask of unfamiliar shape used a hand to cover it's own yawning mouth as it swayed lazily down, succumbing to the effects of Buffy's unintentional attack. Jethro grumbled and fished out a Safari Ball; okay, so maybe this was technically his fault, but this place still seemed too good to be true, he thought as he captured the Yamask to get it some medical attention.

The young Gym Leader's persistent enthusiasm would have been grating were it not so genuine. Jethro just huffed in reply to the invitation, though all told, it might prove to be a valuable resource if his new Rapidash was going to earn it's keep. He probably would've said something to that effect if it weren't for the the new sounds of distress coming from nearby. [break][break]

He followed behind as Josh rode up, only to grimace as he watched an apex predator decimate it's prey. Jethro knew it was too late to intervene even before Josh had secured the assailant; he had seen enough of the violence that Pokemon could inflict upon each other to know when a critter was too far gone, and quite frankly, the dying Rapidash was on it's way out. [break][break]

So he just pulled the brim of his hat down low as Josh moped, and scowled at the loss of life below them, [break][break]

“It's the way a'things,” he replied with a staunch bitterness, “Kill or be killed.” [break][break]

His bright eyes dimmed a little, crestfallen with a remembered bit of grief, [break][break]

“'Least Pokemon do it fer sensible reasons, like feedin' themselves. Humans are the only animals savage enough to do that sorta thing for sport.” [break][break]

Which is why he'd chosen to work for their benefit in that lifetime ago in Unova. Perhaps this was simply indicative of his misanthropic nature, but Pokemon could make for far better friends and coworkers than many people could.
