There were fewer things more refreshing than some coffee on a crisp spring day. Jethro decided he had found himself a little bit of heaven as he nursed a steaming paper cup just outside of Mt. Chimney's base station. [break][break]

The mountains weren't his usual stomping grounds, but he was starting to understand the appeal as his eyes trailed from the infinite blue above to the tops of the lush green conifers that dotted the landscape. It was pretty, real pretty, but would probably be more appealing were it not for the threat of the active volcano looming above it all. Maybe it wasn't all bad, though; it was as fickle as any other force of nature. You either learned to live in recognition of that, or you learned to live in denial, like so many city-slickers did in their cramped metropolises. [break][break]

His head turned sharply to the left when he heard a twig snap nearby; someone or something was approaching. Jethro's thoughtful expression morphed into a dour glare of suspicion as he waited for whoever it was to make themselves known.

Jethro looked down at the handwritten instructions, then back up again at the large sign of a smiling Audino that looked too damn cheerful for it's own good. He was starting to get the sinking feeling that he'd traveled to the wrong homestead. [break][break]

It had been obnoxious enough when old McGillicutty from just across the holler had roped him into this egg delivery business, but Jethro couldn't deny that he desperately needed a favor in return. There were fences that needed fixing, soil that needed tilling, and Jethro was only one man, so when McGillicutty had promised to loan his boys to give him a hand with sprucing up his little parcel of land, Jethro couldn't refuse. [break][break]

But now that he was here, staring at the chick-scratch directions that the old coot had written down for him, Jethro was starting to become aware of some discrepancies. What he thought said Duvet Ranch was starting to look a little more like Dubois Ranch. Maybe he'd passed a place like on the way over? And he thought these eggs were supposed to be heading to a local daycare, not a privately owned property. [break][break]

Jethro sighed with agitation as the bull next to him lowed impatiently, saddlebags full of eggs resting across the Tauros' back. The old ex-Ranger leaned against some nearby fencing and glowered; alright, so he'd probably have to hit the road again soon, but Jethro was damned if he was hitting the old dusty trail again before he got a chance to rest his tired feet. Maybe if he moved out quickly enough, the homeowner wouldn't realize there was a stranger loitering on their property.

Littleroot Town had been one of the first places Jethro had considered settling in when he decided to pull up roots, but there were a couple of reasons he'd opted not to. [break][break]

In his research, he had come to know Hoenn as a home to all manner of oddities, but this place was host to several of them. There were rumors of a mechanical kingdom that was housed beneath the soil, and he'd seen news coverage of the icy wasteland that neighbored the place to the north. It was a little too much for Jethro's taste; were he a younger man, the call of adventure would have drawn him in like a Cutiefly to a bug zapper, but now it all seemed like it was more trouble than it was worth. [break][break]

But that wasn't the only reason, of course. He'd passed through town to talk to a man about a Mudsdale, and the simple comfort of the rural town was far closer to home than he might have first guessed. A little diner he stopped at fried their taters differently than his favorite spot back home, but the biscuits and gravy were better than he'd expected. The friendly faces he passed were unfamiliar in their features but welcoming all the same, an echo of the hospitality he'd become so acquainted with. The place was foreign to him, but in some ways, it was like he'd never left Floccesy. [break][break]

Which is why he couldn't linger in this place too long. He gnawed at the toothpick jutting out of the corner his mouth with agitation as he stomped up the path toward Oldale. The last thing he needed was to be reminded of the things he'd lost back on a continent a thousand miles away, god damn it. The sooner he got out of these parts, the better.

Jethro's patience was already worn thin by the time he saw the patrol car make it's way up the long winding path to his house. What little patience he had left frayed into nothing as he watched the bastard take his sweet time moseying on up to where Jethro waited for him, arms folded across his chest, [break][break]

“'Bout god damn time you showed up-” [break][break]

Oh no; oh hell no. He'd known there was something familiar about the drawl in the other man's voice, but he'd only come to recognize it a half-second after the “officer” had, [break][break]

“Monty, you scum-suckin' sack a' shit, what in the hell are you doin' out here?” Jethro fumed, “Ya get tired of snatchin' purses and poachin' critters back home?” [break][break]

But wait, he had introduced himself as “Officer James”, hadn't he? Indignation gave way to disbelief; Jethro couldn't help but let out a hoarse chuckle when the realization struck him, [break][break]

“And what the hell do ya mean, 'officer'? Don't tell me yer pullin' a fast one on the locals out here. Do they even know who the hell you are?” [break][break]

His right hand moved back to his side and fingered the Poke Ball there. He'd squared off against this degenerate plenty in the past, and was confident that he could send the lousy bastard packing with a little help from his 'farmhand'. The only thing staying his hand was a vague curiosity, and a bit of smugness that came with calling a man on his bluff.

Despite the chill that still desperately clung to the spring air, the world had begun to burst with color and life, which, in Jethro's case, meant that there was work to be done. [break][break]

With careful steps, he walked along the perimeter of his neglected little swath of farmland, taking note of every piece of rotting wood and conspicuous gap in the fence that bordered it. The previous owner had left this place in a hell of a state, but truth be told, Jethro was thankful for it; it kept the price of the land down and would keep his hands busy once he could set to work in earnest. What he was less thankful for was the sight of something strange and dilapidated in a far corner to the east, barely peaking out from a distant treeline. [break][break]

Careful to keep his boots from catching in the mud, Jethro cautiously approached, eyes narrowing with suspicion as the wooden structure came into clearer view, [break][break]

“What in the Sam Hill-?” [break][break]

It looked like a tiny house with little shutters, topped by an angular roof that was half-coated in a mix of moss and mildew. Something about it seem vaguely familiar, if only he could- [break][break]

Ah, that was it. It was a shrine, Jethro realized, not unlike the little structures back home made for fickle gods of earth and storm. He snorted a little incredulously before taking out his cell phone to make a couple of calls. Folks in these parts still cared an awful lot about the places of worship made by a dead people for their dead gods, and while Jethro couldn't say that he understood it entirely, there was no point in kicking up a fuss with his new neighbors. Maybe they'd appreciate his consideration for their customs; maybe it'd keep some of the nosier locals off of his back for a little while longer.[break][break]

After the call was routed through two or three different departments at city hall, Jethro was informed that an officer would be swinging by to check out the little structure for themselves. Something about assessing damage and dealing with any wild Pokemon that might take offense to the shrine being moved; Jethro couldn't be bothered to mind the specifics much, mostly just eager for whoever it was to show up and get out as fast as they could. [break][break]

So he waited, cold eyes narrowed as he watched the property line with a wary vigilance, fingers drumming anxiously across the surface of the Poke Ball secured to his waist. Hopefully the local Barney would get here sooner rather than later; there was still plenty of work to be done before the day was through.

INTRODUCTORY BLURB

IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL

Jethro Haig is a Unovan ex-ranger turned farmer, who relocated to Fallarbor Town in the fall of 2023. He's a surly bastard that keeps to himself, spending his days tending to what little livestock he has and researching for the next growing season. He doesn't quite particularly care for all the convoluted nonsense that keeps cropping up in these parts, but hey, the people gotta eat, and what else is a man to do but provide? The following information is what can be gleaned from a search of publicly available records, including birth certificates, financial records, obituaries, courthouse documents, and Floccesy's local newspaper.

PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE

WHAT CAN BE LOOKED UP

Jethro Obediah Haig was born January 4th, 1981
He's the oldest of six children born to Levi and Priscilla Haig, a pair of ranchers who primarily raised cattle in his hometown
His siblings include Ezekiel, Mordecai, Naomi Winchester (nee Haig), Ruth, and Thomas Haig
Was originally set to take over the family business, but he instead passed the opportunity on to his younger brother Ezekiel and became a Pokemon Ranger instead
While not a particularly famous figure, Jethro would reach the Unovan equivalent rank of Elite Ranger by the time he retired from his position
Was married to Jesse Puckett, a Floccesy local who would later run the local general store, on February 6th, 2002
The two remained together for a little over over twenty years until Jesse passed away unexpectedly in the fall of 2022
Jethro would leave the Rangers shortly after, and relocated to Hoenn in the fall of 2023

LEAGUE KNOWLEDGE

POINTS OF INTEREST FOR THE LEAGUE FACTION

Anyone with access to records housed by the Unovan branch of the Rangers would note that Jethro had a sterling record while under their employ; he was well-loved by his community and cohorts, would go to extreme lengths to ensure the safety of people and Pokemon alike, and had a particular knack for working with Pokemon commonly used in farming and agriculture
Those with access to coroner’s reports out of Virbank City would find that Jethro’s late husband was killed in a collision with a drunk driver

ROCKET KNOWLEDGE

POINTS OF INTEREST FOR TEAM ROCKET FACTION

Thomas Haig, the youngest of Jethro’s siblings, would later relocate to Kanto in a bid to join the team Rocket branch there. He primarily worked as an enforcer and as muscle during extortion operations, and was later killed by resistance fighters during the region’s takeover

PRIVATE KNOWLEDGE

PERSONAL SECRETS

Extremely anti-Rocket. Not only finds their general criminality extremely distasteful and their mistreatment of Pokemon horrific, but he feels a specific sense of betrayal at his younger brother’s affiliation with the organization.
Doesn’t actually know that Thomas Haig has long since passed, but heavily suspects as much. Half of it comes from his inherent hatred of Team Rocket, half of it is just gut instinct
Retired from the Rangers and moved from Unova due largely to the fact that he’s still mourning his husband’s passing
He’ll tell you that he didn’t pick Hoenn as his new home for any specific reason, but in truth, he greatly admires the work of the Rangers in the region, and has at times considered aiding them in their efforts
He did specifically pick Fallarbor as his new home because he wanted to get back into farming; while his family primarily handled livestock, Jethro personally aims to dabble into agriculture as well
