Derek was born in Galar as the son of a successful businessman. He grew up the youngest of 5 children, and from a young age had violent tendencies. His parents and oldest siblings were distant figures to him, and his adroit use of violence made even the household workers keep him at a distance. He reacted to almost all conflict with escalation, and often enough would take things too far and hurt other children, only worsening his isolation at home. Derek developed a ‘Might Makes Right’ mentality, and would often enforce his own desires over other children, including his older sister. When his parents finally had time to remember they had Derek, he was entering his teen years and they were horrified to find such a violent, thuggish young man amongst their children.

Their response to Derek’s beliefs in that the strong rule, and the weak obey, lead them to sending him to a strict boarding school in a country called Paldea, well-known for ironing out similar behavioral issues in young children. Being as it was also a school for training, his parents gave him a young Axew, the child of two of their own pokemon. Less than a week after reaching the school, he traded the clingy baby dragon to another student in exchange for a pair of Charcadet brothers. He made the trade because he had watched the other student try to bond with them, but fail due to the fire types being extremely aggressive. Within the month, the three were thick as thieves and he began to train them in earnest. Derek and his Charcadets began to make a name for themselves for their skills on the battlefield, and he developed a small cadre of students who trained with him regularly.

The teachers, while concerned that the brutality of Derek’s pokemon didn’t seem to be abating, still took him constantly being surrounded by the other students as a sign that he was calming down and told his parents that the program was working. Unfortunately, what the principal didn’t know was that Derek had formed the students in his training group into a small gang, and were often beating up other students and local youths and stealing money and items from them. They managed to keep things quiet for almost 3 years, before Derek went home to see his family when he turned 16. While there, one of his older brothers, Paul, was playfully pushing him around, and it led to Derek furiously challenging Paul to a double battle. Everyone thought it was going to be a simple battle, with Derek doing well enough to make Paul back off. What none of them expected was for Derek’s pokemon, now a Armarouge and Ceruledge, to brutalize Paul’s Ludicolo and Swellow to the point they had to be rushed to an emergency care Pokemon Center. Derek’s parents tried to scold him, only to find out the hard way that Derek didn’t care about their words. He left home the next day.

Derek would spend the next 3 years in and out of the system on small charges, mostly living his life learning whatever interested him and taking his pokemon to fight to their heart’s content, while continuing his education through online programs. He gained a small amount of fame as a pit fighter, pitching pokemon he was training into illegal fights to the death. He didn’t develop any particularly deep bonds with any pokemon outside of his starters, and found it easy to leave corpses behind him. He also left a few human bodies in his wake, either from would-be thieves or people trying to get out of paying him his earnings. One day, while waiting for his turn in the pit, police busted in to arrest everyone at the arena. Derek managed to escape, but was positively ID’d by the police as he fled. Realizing that the Galarian police weren’t going to just forget his face, Derek waited until nightfall one day and killed the officer that ID’d him, before fleeing the country on the first ship that would take him. When he arrived at Hoenn, he quickly fell back into old habits and ended up joining Team Rocket.
