kasper is smart enough to listen when they're told to look away. that and the lights combined with the way tempest's smile is all sharp only makes them sure that they don't want to see this, actually. it's not that it really helps- even when they look away, they can still hear it.

there's a sickening, wet crunch from where the man is, and even with tempest's snarled order, kasper can hear him half-coughing and half-gagging. his question seems like it should have been snarled out, too, but with the injury he's dealt it lacks the weight that it really should.

"because," kasper starts, without really looking up. they refuse to look up- they can see him out of the corner of their eye, anyway, face covered in his own blood- "you just got your nose broken."

they don't know if tempest is really paying attention, or if this is something to actually test them, but their words hang for a second as they try to force the waver out of their voice. it doesn't work, not really, but they're continuing anyway, driven by some need to prove themself or at least do something here so they'll have contributed in the eyes of rocket as a whole.

"and we'd have no problem doing worse." it's all bark (at least on their end), and they know it, and this league officer probably knows it. but it's something.

kasper can't tell, but the exhaustion that pulls at them tells them it's probably later than what they were hoping for. which isn't saying much- usually when they worked opening shifts, they went to bad old-person levels of early.

the league officer also doesn't seem that intimidated by kasper. the rocket beast with them is a whole different story, but, to be fair, one of them knows what he's doing (probably) and also isn't nineteen years old.

it only feels right for them to glance over as they try- very hard- to stifle a yawn. "so. what's the plan?" if tempest wants to be intimidating, they can try, but...that's probably a better job for their pokemon instead of them, and they're not sure how often pokemon are allowed in interrogation rooms.

It's hard to tell the time of day in a windowless interrogation room, but the way your eyes ache with weary exhaustion tells you that it must be late into the evening. [break][break]

Hours have passed since you first brought in the League official handcuffed across the table from you. [break][break]

From what you've been told, the man is privy to many of the League's confidential military plans. Locations of bases and weapons caches, names of prominent leadership, access to private communication networks - he knows more than his unassuming appearance lets on. [break][break]

It's up to the two of you to extract as much information as you can.

joining mint means a lot of things- partially that their words earn them a smile from ameena, and also that the part of their brain that takes note of that is quicklly overshadowed by the part of their brain that goes holy shit at the beast's digital expression changing.

"they'd be able to do the weird like...expression? thing?" it's partially to try to distract themself from not picking apart the mask, and partially directed to ameena- she probably knows more about it- but the curiosity is there. they'll have to ask for sure later.

the options are cut down into smaller groups, and, this time, kasper does know one of the people in charge of a group. Tempest Quinn seems cool, from what kasper's seen of him, and their past experiences from training with him leave them a little less intimidated.

until he releases his dogs, anyway. that's more than enough to stop them from perking up too much.

"i know temp. he was actually one of the first people i trained with." as they watch the scene, though, they wince a little at the way the poor grunt is losing. "not like...this sort of training, though. it was just a pokemon battle."

the threat of being maimed by dogs aside, kasper feels a little more confident knowing there's two people they've trained with before, now. it makes joining the crowd a bit closer to the fight easier.

with everything going on, kasper was (this time) not unused to the idea of training, and this was no different. neither was training with ameena, even if the groups in front of them were more or less strangers to kasper. they knew of them, somewhat, but their knowledge of both of them started and stopped at their names and their ranks within rocket. everything else about them was new to kasper.

ameena’s involvement is a relief in more ways than one- partially because kasper does like her, and partially because with what she knows, she’s making sure they won’t be going into this completely blind. a glance between the groups doesn’t tell them too much- just that zev seems much more intimidating than mint, and they’d probably die of fright if they had to train with him even in a simulation.

mint not only looks closer to their age, but also like he wouldn’t tear them apart. maybe. hopefully.

they hum, hoping it seems more like they’re indecisive and less like they’ve already made up their mind. “maybe the other one?” they nod towards mint and his group before they’re turning a grin towards the woman with them. “who knows- maybe you’ll learn something new, too, if you don’t know them.”

if anyone asked kasper what they’d rather be doing, they’d probably say something along the lines of literally anything but this. they don’t even mind dealing with technology, in theory, but in practice it’s a whole different story. especially when dealing with technology meant making sure something worked, and everyone was in for a world of pain if they messed something up, somehow.

they kind of didn’t like who they were working with, either. she was one of those sorts that they were pretty sure everyone at their job would hate within five minutes, but for now they bite their tongue. if only because they’re pretty sure they have to.

kasper, admittedly, wasn’t prepared for anything war-related. it was hard to be, when they hadn’t dealt with anything like this before, but at least they fit in well with the group, if only because all of them were also grunts and totally out of their comfort zone.

the grunt they've been assigned to work on this with doesn't seem to be any more nervous than the rest of them, which wasn't saying much, but. they'd take what they could get.

"not at all. let's do this." as much as they want to not do this, they're pretty sure it's much too late to back out now. "does mossdeep sound good to you?" since it's their hometown, they know it a bit better, and they're not about to pass up the chance to have some sort of comfort through this.
