by any normal standards, the sheer cold would allegedly be non-existent in hoenn, for it was said to be classified as a tropical region. however, with the multitude of phenomena that have cursed these lands for time immemorial, parts of the region have been plagued with what feels to be subzero environments - including where the two rangers stand at this very moment. it makes little difference to silverio, though, for he had grown accustomed to it in his younger days as a competitive battler traversing the diverse terrains that paldea had to offer.[break][break]

alas, hoenn and paldea are too widely different regions...[break][break]

the trials he had faced back in those days pale in comparison to the challenges that stood before him in hoeen since his arrival, ever growing to be a taller order by the day. another major difference being that, in those early days, he had no means of support. each day, he had battled, journeyed, and studied alone. then again, he was just a growing boy on a daunting 'treasure hunt' at that time. here in hoenn, however, in his two-plus years of service with the rangers, he has gained the support of countless peers, and it would take more than ten fingers to count them.[break][break]

suppose he can add juliana to that list...[break][break]

that is to say, depending on her assessment here today. but just as many others have invested their faith in him, he will believe that the rookie will be well on the rise to success in little to no time at all. her actions, devoid of words, leave the impression of nerves settling into her skin. understandable, to tell the truth. seeing her practically stumbling in the manner that she does triggers memories of silverio's first field expedition. it damn sure wasn't pretty to say the least, but it was the ticket he needed to propel himself on his quest to be a more reliable ranger. he can only hope that the same will hold true for juliana.[break][break]

"it's alright, you don't have to tell..."[break][break]

the sight of words written on her mobile device stuns him for but a moment. "...me...?" questions begin to brew in the senior ranger's mind. could she have lost her voice? or could she just be far too nervous to try and project herself in that way? whatever the case, he marks a mental note to traverse with utmost caution; the last thing he'd want to do is...well...anything that'd make her less comfortable what she's likely already feeling. in which case...[break][break]

"no problem. like i said, i hope that we won't have to battle anyone here, or anything for that matter, anytime soon. for now, just stay on your toes and keep your eyes open, 'kay?"[break][break]

from within the confines of balls strapped along his waist, he summons his patented canine companion, a lycanroc said to be born in the hour of dusk. "hey buddy, let's do our best to help our new friend here feel welcome, yeah?" the beast briefly greets the rookie in the form of a raised paw as if to offer a handshake, then commences slow steps along the icy trails, with his sharp nose hard at work, sniffing for clues. before long, he barks, signaling a means of discovery. "looks like he found something..."[break][break]

footprints, markings that depict claws, and light traces of blood. "they look fresh...not a good sign; whoever or whatever did this must be nearby..."

times are changing, circumstances are changing, but one thing that has not changed is silverio's diligence and eagerness to accomplish a task given - especially one of which he assigns to himself, that being the studies of hoenn's vastly altering environment and all of its natural inhabitants. but today, that very essence is endangered? by who? or what? is it an effect of the many phenomena that plague the land? with the causes becoming increasingly difficult to decipher by the day, the paldea-born ranger dares to dip his hands into the boiling melting pot of diverse contributions to hoenn's seemingly improbable salvation.[break][break]

all for the sake of its wading longevity, and to prove his worth to the league once and for all.[break][break]

suppose that silv's merits outweight his faults to this point - a stern visage in the face of many dangers that he's encountered, both in this realm and others he has ventured into via rifts in space and time, as well as his ever-evolving intellect and desire to learn. if there's one thing he may learn today, however, it may be this: how to contend with hostile oppositions all on his own. and that, inevitably, is where he finds himself to be today, dispatched onto the routes connecting to the quaint little town of oldale on account of suspicious activity being conducted.[break][break]

while cautiously traversing through tall greens in the midst of ongoing madness, with a flying scorpion-like creature sailing above to serve as a scout, silv instantly recalls a loud memory in his mind. a fellow ranger, saskia volosenkova , had once mentioned being stationed here with her dad. is she still here!? if so, then it's likely that she may be in just as much danger as the pokémon inhabiting these lands. with that in mind, the paldean takes note to try and follow up with her at some point. but for now, he must focus on defending the lives that are being threatened here.[break][break]

one thing stands out on the trails...or was it...? "hey! what are you doing there!? i'm gonna have to ask you to step away; it's not safe here!" he addresses a strangely veiled individual standing alone. their very presence raises an alarm in the ranger's mind. what's their deal...?[break][break]

it wouldn't be long before wayward duck presents itself to the duo, with its stubby hands clenched on either side of its head, as if to indicate that it's been throbbing in a great deal of pain. a horrid quack plagues their ears, and with that, silverio opts to leave the poor guy to its own devices.[break][break]

best to leave well enough alone, he thinks - no point in initiating contact with a potential hostile. although it was likely that the psyduck may pose little to no threat, silv insists that there is no room for unnecessary diversions.

his self-designated personal mission to give more of his poképals some bit of extra screen time continues. today, along one of several routes plagued with disruptions, a gleamy-eyed feline joins the paldea-born ranger on a routine field survey. there'd be no room for leisure on this day, however, with war in full swing.[break][break]

luxray proceeds to scope patches of tall greens and withering leaves with its nose, tracing for scents of anything or anyone that may be deemed suspicious - the first step in the beast's regimen to becoming a viable partner while out on the fields, and for silverio, another step perhaps, towards becoming a more efficient and more dependable ranger.

never before has silverio imagined himself landing smacked dib in the midst of its crosshairs. alas, at this point in the few years in which he has traversed this region, suppose it is fair to say that being thrown headfirst into the fray was practically inevitable. regardless, there's a job to do here, that being to ensure the safety and security of hoenn's lands. easier said than done; each day, the challenges faced by the many hopeful individuals that seek to contribute to the region's salvation grow more gruesome. but even so...[break][break]

protecting the environment is a daunting task indeed.[break][break]

in retrospect, defending it is the very reason that silverio looks to continue his work with the pokémon rangers, despite recent experiences with certain colleagues that he wishes he could forget. to learn more of this land and the unthinkable phenomena that plague it is one of the more notable motives in the mind of the paldea-born ranger. after all, should these lands become undone by the impending chaos and destruction, then there would be nothing left of them for silv, or anyone, to study it. and yet...[break][break]

'...watch out for youself, too...', annalise henderson had once said to him.[break][break]

what a load of bullshit. was that truly what being a ranger is primarily about? tending to oneself? how far from the truth...? no, taking responsibility for others and their pokémon is part of the job too, is it not? in fact, had it not been for silverio's fast actions in sea mauville, it would've been possible for that captain to have sunk twenty-thousand leagues under the sea along with all of that rubble. even so, since then, questions began to sink into silv's mind...[break][break]

...does he genuinely belong here...?[break][break]

perhaps now is a better time than any to prove that he does. thus, he finds himself here, despite the losses that petalburg has suffered, in the hope of achieving some means of redemption. and yet, toxicity fills the air around him, pokémon are being forced out of there natural habitat. "what...!?" who can say what may have triggered this latest phenomenon - or who, for that matter. his sapphire eyes catch...[break][break]

"hey, you there! what do you think you're doing!? it's not safe here!" he calls out to a mysterious masked figure, with an arm shielding parts of his face. arceus help him if he were to inhale the toxins emanating from who-knows-what.[break][break]

with no means of escape, at least for now, venturing further within the sands' depths sounded to be the most viable option. despite the risks and the dangers that he and his companion have faced already to this point in time, there was still much about the rifts and other phenomena that silverio sought to learn about - and also to tell stories of, to his family back in paldea, in writing.[break][break]

only a few steps behind keiko, with mega greninja in tow, mindful of any other potential hazards that the tunnels may present to them, the road leading to a rounder confinement on a far wider scale. no other creatures in sight, but the small footprints was a clear indicator that, whatever they are, they've been here recently. "these look fresh..." the footsteps, rather. not to mention the mass of oddly-colored carcasses all laid out about the room.[break][break]

"it's like something, or someone, is trying to salvage these bodies and preserve them. for what reason? i can't even imagine..." now this? definitely something worth the effort to write home about. furthermore, a means to advance his studies, perhaps? silverio motioned to inspect one of the bodies, noting a small book protruding from its unorthodox attire. he carefully moved to grab it. a tad dusted, but legible.[break][break]

skimming through its lightly torn pages, he'd see writings that describe what could vaguely be referred to as...[break][break]

"beasts...?" like the one-foot-tall walking origami pieces he had encountered just moments ago? were there more of them...!?

as if they'd been waiting all day for a cue, the sources of the strange noises would instantly present themselves. on one end, a taller presence in the form of a ladylike bug of which keiko's slowking was pressed with the task of combating against. on silverio's side of things, a swarm of entities akin to origami projects rushdown the ranger, only for a few to be met with a fierce hydro pump from behind a few feet away, courtesy of the greninja. but just as quickly as some the folded-paper-like beings were being repelled, more of them came flooding the passage of whence he stepped in.[break][break]

soon enough, both he and his amphibian warrior were rapidly overwhelemed with a flurry of leaf blades, leaving the latter critically worse for wear. but there'd be some quick thinking on his trainer's part; from within the confines of his garment, clenched in one hand, a chained pendant glows vibrant gradial hue. "you've got this! hang in there!!" in a flash, the greninja emerges from the pile of moving paper in a revolutionary form, packed with a shuriken on his back.[break][break]

he swiftly launches an array of water shuriken at the tribe of paper monsters. then, as more of them rushed forward, their sacred swords would clash with a series of ice punches. while the ruckus ensued, silv unveils an empty pokéball from his back pocket and launches one at one of those papers in fell motion, assuming they were even classified as pokémon.[break][break]

no way out, other than to go further in!? "let's get moving then!!" the paldean sets a course away from the madness, with his mega-evolved greninja continuing his own assault to keep the alleged origami knights at bay.
