absinthe watches as the gym leader zips up a cocoon around himself atop the massive dog. her eyes trail across the leather straps, steel zippers, and other bits and bobs, and she nods. a useful contraption. she had no idea it was even there.[break][break]

"i'm alright," she says as she looks herself over. "just a small fall."[break][break]

as soon as josh is out of the saddle, absinthe is back in, this time strapping herself to the arcanine with the cocoon as she settles her feet in the loops. her hands linger on the leathers as she checks her work over. "it is a lot like an experiment," the chemist admits in a low tone in response to josh's praise. "you have a hypothesis going into it, and sometimes it is wrong. but getting it wrong may let you get it right in the future."[break][break]

with that, absinthe squeezes her feet against braver's sides and spurs him into a steady trot once more, albeit the slightest bit faster than she had been going before. when she sees a bend in the road ahead, she anticipates the turn, leaning into her mount before they even get to the bend. with this, she deftly navigates the course with only a few hiccups, and shortly returns to the beginning of the course. when she unstraps herself from the arcanine, a smile has reached her eyes.[break][break]

"i had thought it would be harder than it was," absinthe admits as she drops down from the saddle. "it helps to learn from somebody experienced."

absinthe mulls the information over in her head. she's no physicist, but she's certainly taken more than a few classes pertaining to the subject in university. quantum weirdness can often only be explained under the guise that quantum states may diverge into an infinite number of worlds and superimpose upon each other until they are measured. an oft difficult concept to wrap one's mind around.[break][break]

absinthe crosses her arms over her chest. "not really," she returns. "theories about these things have existed for millennia. the time we have been born in gives us a chance to confirm them."[break][break]

she glances at the ice golem once more, and she tilts her head to the side.[break][break]

"have you asked its sibling?" absinthe wonders aloud. "can they speak to one another?"

absinthe stands at the edge of the damp clearing, breathing deep the stench of moss and decaying leaves heavy in the air. held aloft in tenuous rays of sunlight are deep purple particulates, gleaming beneath the gentle touch of the light. venomoth toxin, stirred into the air from its frantic flying. the thing had escaped her grasp, just as she was preparing to harvest what she needed. foolish mistake, really, to let it slip away in the chaos after the attack. but absinthe has more than enough time to rectify that now.[break][break]

the chemist crouches, tracing a finger through the dirt, and allows her eyes to drift over the patterns left behind by the venomoth’s frantic departure. the creature was wounded, that much was certain. wounded as it was, it likely can't have gone far.[break][break]

absinthe straightens and her eyes narrow as she scans the dense undergrowth. absinthe focuses in on the cacophany of noises surrounding her, parsing through bird trills and rustling undergrowth in search of the buzz of flapping wings. she wouldn’t let it get far. she couldn’t. The forest is vast, but she has traversed it countless times, knows its twists and turns like the back of her hand, for the pokemon pickings are rife here, and supplies plenty. furthermore, absinthe has something the venomoth does not—patience. a predator’s patience.[break][break]

absinthe stalks off into the undergrowth, eyes glinting. she would follow the thing until it fell, just as her ancestors did many millennia ago.

that fast, hmm?[break][break]

tempting, but not practical. impressive, at the very least. she's not here for thrills, though. she's honestly not certain her heart could take it, with how little she's been sleeping lately.[break][break]

"i had no idea," absinthe admits. "that's surprising."[break][break]

now that she knows she won't be breaking the thing, though, she feels more comfortable with picking up in speed. with a subtle squeeze of her legs, she encourages the arcanine to pick up the pace, just enough to feel the power beneath her, the raw energy that could be harnessed for her own purposes. the chemist keeps her gaze on the road ahead, her mind already racing with possibilities, calculations, and strategies.[break][break]

a bend approaches. absinthe leans into it, using her body weight to guide the arcanine around it, but she doesn't lean far enough. the turn is too wide, and absinthe leans further to compensate, only to slip entirely from the arcanine's back and topple to ground below in a puff of sand and dirt.[break][break]

grimacing, absinthe is quick to return to her feet and brush herself off, even despite the throbbing ache in her spine. her eyes trail uselessly after the mount she had once been atop.[break][break]

"i'll have to get used to that," she mutters to herself.

that went surprisingly well. absinthe had certainly expected more of a fight from the snake pokemon, but is, of course, not complaining about the ease with which they were dispatched. satisfied with this outcome, absinthe figures it's high time to begin exploring some other vistas within the cavern. she has a small key to find, after all.[break][break]

backing out of the space, absinthe decides to investigate the left tunnel in the previous room.

sleep drugs. it is almost too easy to answer. had absinthe not been proactive in production, she would not sleep at all. she must get high on her own supply to function most days. absinthe nods.[break][break]

absinthe's nose wrinkles. she had once thought such codependency to be romantic, too. experience has since tempered that worldview.[break][break]

"no. it isn't romantic." absinthe's eyes narrow as she watches howard. "it is suffocating."[break][break]

what absinthe would have given to have never fallen into those same compulsions. she had thought herself immune, too logical to begin seeing one man as a balm to all of her problems, but nobody is ready for that feeling when it rolls around. it took her by surprise, it dulled her teeth.[break][break]

not anymore. absinthe would rather cut off her own hand before she reached for such a relationship ever again.[break][break]

howard is bound by duty, though. a tragic existence, but howard does not have the luxury to shrug off the yoke. born as cattle, to die as cattle. pessimism yet persists in the woman's mind.[break][break]

absinthe shifts on her feet as the archeologist seems to glean something from the effigy he had just communed with. "what is?" she glances at the ice golem through its ever-present misty haze, then back to howard. "you are being vague."

absinthe narrows her eyes as the seviper hoard advances. poor things. they're probably just hungry. this desolate barren can hardly support such a large colony.[break][break]

but, in a dog eat dog world, empathy comes by the dime. only the rich can afford to be kind, and absinthe is no rich woman. she sighs as she prepares to choose her selected option, although pauses just before. if she fights head on, what will it look like? will she be using pokemon? she doesn't see any user interface indicating the pokemon team she's brought with her.[break][break]

oh well. only one way to find out. absinthe selects fight the horde head on.

absinthe’s sharp eyes catch the movement as ryker approaches, and her posture remains still, leaning against the wall as if she hadn’t noticed him at all. but she had, of course. absinthe notices everything in her domain, especially when it comes to the people who can be of use to her. the man before her is no exception.[break][break]

she meets his blunt statement with a slight, nigh imperceptible nod. "i do," she answers, voice cold, tone edged with weariness. "it’s a delicate matter. the kind that requires precision. discretion."[break][break]

she uncrosses her arms and pushes away from the wall, stepping forward just enough for the dim light of the alleyway to catch the glint of her eyes. “there’s a dealer—an old connection—who thinks he’s clever. clever enough to try and blackmail me. he’s being protected, and he’s managed to erase almost all traces of himself in the city. but i’ve got a lead. a single thread to pull.”[break][break]

absinthe’s gaze hardens, the headache behind her eyes throbbing as she recalls the details. “he frequents a dive just outside the market—the rusted hook. he’ll be there tonight, and i need you to send a message. no loose ends.”

toxic chain. a foreign word. absinthe tests the feeling of it on her tongue, then on her lips. "toxic chain."[break][break]

fascinating. another sign given to her by the universe that she has yet to see everything available to her. absinthe eye's deepen, then narrow. what she wouldn't give to get her hands on a pokemon like that. to replicate the effect without ever coming into contact with the never rot would possibly be a dream come true.[break][break]

the chemist is, of course, not the kind of woman to half-ass anything. the worst that can be done is...[break][break]

well. get poisoned, she supposes. absinthe suddenly meets yuina's gaze.[break][break]

"i am a chemist," she begins. "and i would like to study your houndoom."[break][break]

no fluff, no lede. the offer is made succinctly and summarily, placed onto neutral ground in front of them, with no further explanation. absinthe feels like she needs not explain herself. the want is apparent already: a scientist's curiosity gleams in her piercing green eyes.

absinthe's grip on the reins tighten as josh's words filtered through her mind. she has always been a woman of control, priding herself on the precision of her work, the careful manipulation of every variable in her experiments. this—riding a living, breathing creature—is an entirely different kind of control. it is one she had little experience with. in fact, she is often far more experienced with being controlled. it is something completely new.[break][break]

nontheless, the chemist takes a deep breath, steadying herself as she guides the arcanine onto the twist road behind josh. the track ahead is winding, and she can already feel the tension in her shoulders as she prepares to make her first turn. pulling gently on the reins, she tries to steer the massive beast to the right. the arcanine responds, though not without some resistance, requiring more strength than she anticipated.[break][break]

the woman is silent as she focuses on the task at hand. every once in a while, she glances at josh in an effort to gauge his reaction. it is a skill she learned from many years of doing little more than surviving: to determine the emotions of a man solely based on the crease of his brow is an art-form that absinthe has summarily mastered. as such, she seeks his gaze, in search of any indication that she is doing this wrong, so that she may correct herself, much as a lab experiment might be iterated on until it reaches perfection.[break][break]

there is, of course, always a part of her that wants to push the boundaries.[break][break]
