rosemary’s heart skips a beat as she hears the approaching footsteps, her mind racing with all of the consequences that could arise from this moment. when the woman speaks, her tone is unexpectedly calm and disarming, but the mention of lovelace catches rosemary off guard.[break][break]

rosemary’s eyes widen slightly as she takes in the sight of the woman before her—a face she struggles to recognize, accompanied by a mightyena that exudes an air of quiet strength. for a moment, rosemary is at a loss for words, her usual composure shaken by the sudden appearance of such a lady.[break][break]

"no, i—" she begins, her voice tinged with embarrassment. "i don't. not really, at least." she runs a hand through her hair, trying to regain some semblance of calm. "i didn’t expect this to happen, and i don’t have the tools with me either. it’s… been a long day."[break][break]

her gaze shifts to the tire, then back to calliope. "i’d be grateful for any help you can offer," she admits, her voice softening as she tries to push down the rising anxiety about the contents of her trunk. “i think i have a tire somewhere back here.”[break][break]

the woman pops the trunk of the car. within lies around ten military-grade rifles, all gleaming in black chrome in the dying sunlight, exquisitely constructed, almost perfect to the untrained eye. rosemary hopes that she can hide the quiet panic written across her face by adjusting a few straps on the floor of the trunk in search of the tire she’s certain is around there… somewhere.

as the conversation returns to the topic of plants, rosemary's smile brightens considerably, finally back on solid ground. seeds may not agree with ameena, but nowadays, rosemary often finds them to be her only true companions.[break][break]

"a rowap is no problem. we've got a few that should be just right," she says, gesturing towards a section of the nursery where the plants in question were thriving. just as she's about to move to go pick a suitable one for the woman, the next question gives rosemary considerable pause, if only to quell the sudden excitement that lurches up through her throat like a monster.[break][break]

"terrariums are really great if you love the look plants bring to a space but don't feel confident with taking care of them," rosemary chirps, turning fully back to ameena. "once you seal it, you never have to open it up again, not even to water it. the terrarium creates a little micro-climate that allows them to water themselves once you introduce some water when building it."[break][break]

she tilts her head slightly, her eyes drifting to the now-empty space where the terrarium had been. "if you're interested, i could help you put one together. something simple but elegant, maybe with a mix of succulents or ferns? they’re quite forgiving."

rosemary is lucky that she's made a fool of herself in front of somebody kind enough to offer a hand instead of a fist. the shopkeep watches with rapt attention as the once torn skin of her fingertip is knit together by divine touch, wrought upon her by the customer's lucario. a tall woman with a worn face and eyes with such intensity that rosemary's stomach ends up doing a front flip inside of her. she averts her eyes and swallows thickly.[break][break]

"thank you for the help," she manages, directed both towards the lucario, who is now assisting in cleanup, and the unknown customer. rosemary quickly busies herself with a broom and a dustpan in search of ridding herself of her failure's evidence, and the glass makes soft sounds against the store's linoleum floor tiles as she sweeps it all into the dustpan.[break][break]

rosemary moves to dispose the remains of the terrarium into the trash, but ameena's observation gives her pause.[break][break]

she runs her bottom lip beneath her teeth, an unconscious habit brought to life by mention of the war. it is her whole reason for being in hoenn. unrest breeds business. people come and go. their love raises castles, like sootopolis, and it razes cities to the ground, like petalburg. for everu war, there are hawkers on the sidelines. shame blooms like a wretched flower in rosemary's chest as she dumps the glass shards in her dustpan into a trash bin. she had thought the nursery could help her escape thoughts of such conflict, and yet it still finds her.[break][break]

"i guess so," rosemary murmurs as she turns back to ameena, forcing a smile to her face kicking and screaming. "i am glad people still care about shops like these in such times."[break][break]

rosemary's head tilts, her idle fingertips play with the hem of her apron. "were you looking for something specific?"

as the sun begins its descent, rosemary meticulously arranges the final crates into the trunk of her car. the journey from the factory had been uneventful, but she could finally see the end in sight - a peaceful evening at home. however, as she turns onto a serene side street, her car suddenly jolts and the familiar thump-thump-thump of a flat tire echoes through the quiet air.[break][break]

a wave of despair washes over her as she pulls off to the side of the winding road, lamenting her misfortune. with a heavy heart, she steps out of the car to survey the damage, already aware of what she would discover - a fully deflated tire and a long road ahead.[break][break]

with a quick look over her shoulder, she feels the thumping of her heart in her chest. the trunk holds an arsenal of guns and tools, each carefully arranged in crates. although it is all purely for business purposes, she dreads the risk of someone misinterpreting the situation if they pull over to offer assistance.[break][break]

even worse, she doesn’t have the tools to even begin thinking about changing the tire. burying her face in her waiting hands, rosemary groans aloud. just her luck!

the rays of the afternoon sun dance through the large windows of the tree nursery, enveloping the rows of potted plants and blooming flowers in a soft, golden glow. today, rosemary had made up her mind to conquer the towering stack of old boxes tucked away in the back room - a treasure trove brimming with neglected tools, outdated supplies, and a handful of curious trinkets she had been meaning to sift through for what seemed like an eternity.[break][break]

gently, she sweeps a stray lock of petal pink hair behind her ear, the weight of the task ahead already weighing heavily on her confidence. summoning all her courage, she lifts a heavy box, awkwardly cradling it in her arms as she navigates through the nursery’s cramped hallways and aisles.[break][break]

as she approaches the front of the nursery, the box begins to slip from her grasp. "no, no, no—" she mutters, trying to adjust her hold, but it is too late. the box tumbles from her hands, and she winces as she hears the unmistakable sound of glass shattering.[break][break]

rosemary humbly descends to the ground, her heart heavy with sorrow as she gazes upon the fragments of a once magnificent terrarium scattered along the floor. her fingers quiver as she begins the daunting task of picking up the shattered pieces, cursing herself for her recklessness. as she is engrossed in her penitent duties, a gentle chime resonates throughout the room, announcing the arrival of an unexpected visitor.[break][break]

she looks up, cheeks flushed with embarrassment, ready to explain the mess. "i’m so sorry," she calls out, "i’ll be with you in just a moment…"[break][break]

her finger slips too close to a shard, and pain blossoms in her palm as the glass cuts her. “ow!” she chirps as blood drips to the floor.

the tree nursery is quiet as the sun begins to dip below the horizon, casting long shadows between the rows of carefully tended plants. rosemary—rose to most—moves through the small, cozy space with practiced ease, her hands dirty from a day spent among the greenery. she hums softly to herself, the melody mingling with the rustle of leaves as she methodically waters the last of the seedlings.[break][break]

the scent of fresh soil and blooming flowers fill the air, a stark contrast to the cold, metallic smell that often clung to her clothes after a day at the factory. here, she feels at peace. here, she could almost forget the weight of her father’s expectations and the looming task of sealing deals with men whose intentions she didn’t want to ponder too deeply.[break][break]

she glances at the clock on the wall—a simple, round thing with a ticking second hand that always seemed to move too slowly—and realizes it is about time to close up. the nursery was supposed to have closed an hour ago, but she’d lingered, as she often did, not wanting to return to her empty apartment and the stack of paperwork waiting for her. nonetheless, it is a duty she must complete. her only resistance is a small, tiny sigh as she begins to busy herself with the closing checklist.[break][break]

as the woman is replacing a terracotta pot on a high shelf, the bell over the door's soft chime interrupts the quiet, and she startles without meaning to, losing grip of the pot. it shatters onto the floor with a loud, clangorous sound, and rosemary frowns at the shards crowded around her boots. this must be the third time in a month she's broken a planter. her boss will kill her.[break][break]

even worse, nobody is supposed to be in the shop. it's nearly an hour past closing. who could possibly be lingering at this hour?[break][break]

rosemary fumbles for a nearby broom, her figure obscured by rows of shelves lined with gardening materials. "i'm so sorry, but we're closed for the evening. if you could come back tomorrow, i'd be happy to help you then!" she calls towards the stranger, too focused on cleaning up the broken planter to bother glancing at the visitor.

most people call her rose, because her full name is too long to say in casual conversation, and though it bothers her, rosemary says nothing. she considers her existence to be a love letter to her late mother. rosemary learned to make guns from a very small age, and her father agrees that she's very good at it. a good shot, too. the kind of girl you parade around, asking her to do party tricks. hit the apple. hit the can.

rosemary likes gardening. when she isn't perfecting the barrel of a revolver, she is pulling up weeds and composting. rosemary is afraid to tell her father that she likes it more than making guns. whenever he calls, she has to bite her tongue to keep from mentioning that she secretly works at a tree nursery on the weekends.

rosemary needs to make money for the business. with war comes money. so long as she can bear the tragedy, she can make the connections her father wants her to. not the league. he wants to back rocket. who is rosemary to complain?
