a dock nestled at the edge of mossdeep had become a place of suspicion. rumors of criminal activity. they were true, and despite the damage that had been done there by kyogre’s waves, traffic had practically tripled.[break][break]

the office on the dock was a mess, like much of the rest of hoenn following the war. ink bled through maps and charts, shipping manifests and bribery logs, even in their places of safe keeping.[break][break]

desmond paced around the room, wondering where to start. maybe it was best to just leave it for someone else and pretend he hadn’t seen it.[break][break]

”what would cyrus do…” perhaps shut down, he thought at first. then he sighed, realizing, ”cyrus wouldn’t have left homework at the office. shit.”[break][break]

on his way out the door for air, his phone rang. twice, as his eyes landed on someone unfamiliar not far from him.[break][break]

he picked up the phone, ”this is evan.”[break][break]

it was a very short call.[break][break]

there was not enough salt in the air to ward off the evil in those ruins. few things made desmond stop for long and feel his own fragile existence in such a way. he should have worn a mask, he thought. he didn’t leave, however, even though he hadn’t really meant to be there at all.[break][break]

a voice drew him out of his own head, and he looked up from a dusty iv bag with a sober expression at the stranger calling him over. there was something in charge about the no-nonsense question and gesturing, but desmond couldn’t immediately identify him from any photos he’d seen of the higher-ups.[break][break]

he walked closer.[break][break]

“saffron city,” he said. and though he figured this no-nonsense stranger probably wasn't looking for questions from him, he didn't refrain from asking, “you?”[break][break][break]

no mai tais, but desmond still smirked like the cat who got the cream. “fine. coffee it is.”[break][break]

he wondered what sort of horror stories cyrus could be referring to. thieves would be foolish to target him, though perhaps it was merely the negligence of others that concerned such a careful and organized individual as he was.[break][break]

metal winked in the light, and desmond glimpsed the locket again as it was pocketed with a quickness that could not go ignored.[break][break]

”good to be in control,” he teased about the movers. cyrus was smart for it though, really.[break][break]

homework was then quickly forgotten as he focused on the far more interesting item in the doctor’s lab coat.[break][break]

”so sentimental. was i not supposed to see that?” he stared at cyrus, having already taken note of all the markers of his fluster. twitching fingers, tense posture.[break][break]

after a second, he averted the pressure of his gaze, letting him off the hook with a couple steps from his bubble.[break][break]

”relax. i’m just messing with you. i won’t pry.”[break][break][break]

the business in slateport desmond had told Cyrus Halbrook about hadn’t been a lie. there was a new supply chain to settle into, and in hoenn’s hub of business were plenty of hands to shake. it stretched into the evenings, after which the rest of the night called to him.[break][break]

gravity was a sleek bar, and though it did not have the fast and electric energy of the clubs he’d been frequenting that week, it was a nice change of pace.[break][break]

he hadn’t been there long when a pretty rose haired woman caught his eye. however, it was not in the space next to her that desmond placed himself. that spot was left for someone less patient, and too drunk to know that a gaze across the room could be a far more powerful opener.[break][break]

instead, he lingered at the end of the bar, positioned squarely in her line of sight. with a smile, he took a sip from his gimlet, before subtly raising it to the pleasant sight of her.[break][break]

“perfect. i have business there anyways.” from the sound of things, slateport was the place to be, with bustling nightlife and all the noise cyrus could ever hope to shy away from. ”let’s leave early. we can get mai tais before you have to be boring.”[break][break]

desmond pulled himself off the couch then, wandering over and peering down at the assortment of things the doctor had been lugging around. he noted an odd item or two – in particular, something that looked like a locket. what was in it? suddenly, his curiosity was almost too much to handle.[break][break]

but on second thought, no. he didn’t care. his gaze averted casually.[break][break]

“is that your homework?”[break][break]

unfortunately for cyrus, team rocket didn’t care about what made people comfortable. his furniture was enough to prove that much.[break][break]

”a little. it’s been a blast, actually. hoennians really know how to party. something about living at the edge of oblivion, i think.”[break][break]

desmond paused, looking down as aurora appeared next to him. a majestic creature, though he preferred a little space between them. lightly, he stroked her fur, hoping he would not be wearing any on his way out. [break][break]

”and i’m guessing you haven't.” his gaze raised to the doctor again, a ruby promise of trouble. he was almost certain cyrus had been hiding in his hole at the end of each day, dreading the rise of another in that new tropical hell.[break][break]

desmond tapped the folded-up assignment into his palm a few times as he approached, light winking off the toes of his wingtip oxfords. ”i think i know that name, actually.”[break][break]

and though he did not know the whole story, he knew at least that it was something of an unfortunate name to have. he watched caden for a moment, sizing him up and placing a mental bet.[break][break]

if he was anything like the other doctors he knew – Cyrus Halbrook for instance – desmond guessed he could get away with plenty.[break][break]

"no, not really. i just wanted to check on you, see how you were doing.” a rather sweet gesture for someone like him, but cyrus would know that for whatever inexplicable reason, he had attracted a particularly rare side of desmond.[break][break]

“i got him patty.” he squeezed his cousin’s cold shoulder under the tarp. “i got him back for you.”[break][break]

the words wavered in a whimpering sob as he hit the windshield wipers. it rained hard that night, and his tears made it only more difficult to navigate a dark road.[break][break]

”remember paldea? remember the pink flamigos, and those little umbrellas in the margaritas? what the fuck, pat. what the fuck!”[break][break]

he swerved and yelped as the car jumped, spitting mud and rocks before he righted it with a lurch of his heart. ”holy shit.”[break][break]

eventually, after what had felt like the longest drive of his young life, desmond parked on a dock with several vessels tied up. got out, looked around, and then began dragging the stiff body of fifteen-year-old patrick sloane towards his uncle’s motorboat.[break][break][break]

time dragged by at the pace of an elder slugma. he’d been there fifteen minutes, but wandering through empty rooms and scrolling on his phone was quickly boring.[break][break]

relief came at the crack of the door, and he closed his eyes and sighed, ”finally,” before leaving the bedroom.[break][break]

cyrus’s face was well worth the wait. desmond’s hand went up to cover his own lips, miming him before it fell away with a smirk. ”cute.”[break][break]

ambling a few paces, he gazed through the space he’d already thoroughly investigated. “i’m surprised to see you too, but i guess this is your apartment.”[break][break]

with a turn back to cyrus, he smiled, as if it wasn’t odd that he’d broken in somehow. as if the inclination to do such a thing was simply part of his charm.[break][break]

”nice place.”[break][break][break]
